Abstract:A full spectrum solar energy classification and mass utilization system is designed to conduct the experimental study of photo-thermal coupling reaction and heat collection integration. The photo-thermal coupling catalytic materials is used in this system to convert the energy of ultraviolet and partial visible bands of sunlight into chemical energy for storage. And the heat-collecting materials is used to convert the light energy of partial visible and infrared bands of sunlight into thermal energy for storage . So that the comprehensive utilization of full spectrum solar energy is realized. In this paper，the objective reaction is to decompose water to produce hydrogen by photothermal coupling，and heat collection is carried out by using heat transfer oil. The results show that when the surface temperature of the reaction material is 414℃，the yield of hydrogen is 15.65μmol/g，and the heat collection efficiency of the system is 43.61%.

Abstract:Concentrating solar power (CSP) is a mainstream of solar energy utilization, and thermionic emission is a potential way to convert concentrated solar radiation into power with a theoretical efficiency of 50–70%, surpassing both Shockley-Queisser limit and photo-thermal limit. This literature attempts to provide a comprehensive understanding of and an insight into solar thermionic energy conversion. The fundamentals of electron emission from electrodes and electron transport in vacuum gap are presented, as well as the state of the art of solar thermionic energy conversion technologies, including heat-induced thermionics and photon-enhanced thermionics. The former is driven by thermal energy, whereas the latter takes advantage of both quantum photon energy and thermal energy. Burgeoning research indicates that photon-enhanced thermionic conversion is a promising technology for concentrating solar power due to the high efficiency and simple operating mode. Now, it is important to develop novel materials and coating technologies to facilitate electron emission and reduce space charge effect in interelectrode vacuum. Structural design of thermionic converters and top–bottom configuration of solar-electricity systems are suggested for practical applications.

Abstract:A model of describing the thermal and power characteristic of solar cells in concentration was worked out, then the thermal and power characteristics in different series resistants and heat transfer coefficients were computed and analyzed. The results show that firstly the maximum electrical output power of solar cell increases sharply with the increase of the concentration ratio, then the increase become slow and there is a inflexion in the flux. The inflexion increases with the decrease of the series resistance of solar cell. The faster the heat transfer coefficient of a solar cell increases, the higher the efficient of a solar cell. The effect of heat transfer coefficient increases with the increase of the concentration ratio.

Abstract:The efficiencies of solar energy collectors are mainly limited by the light collecting ability and the performance of solar cells. In this work, a novel type of compound parabolic concentrating photovoltaic/thermal collector with microencapsulated phase change slurry was proposed to solve these problems. The designed solar collector was reduced to a 3-dimension physical model and numerically studied. Solar cells temperature, outlet temperature of the fluid, electrical, thermal and overall efficiency were simulated and analyzed to evaluate the dynamic performance of the hybrid photovoltaic/thermal collector. The comparison has been done between the microencapsulated phase change slurry and water as cooling fluid in the daytime. It was found that the thermal and electrical efficiency had both been improved due to the existence of the latent heat of microencapsulated phase change slurry. When the solar radiation was the lowest at 18:00, the thermal efficiency was the highest, 78.5% for microencapsulated phase change slurry and 71.9% for water, and the electrical efficiency was also the highest, 11.8% for microencapsulated phase change slurry and almost the same for water. And when the solar radiation reached highest at noon, the thermal efficiency for microencapsulated phase change slurry and water dropped to 58.6% and 55.3%, the electrical efficiency for microencapsulated phase change slurry and water dropped to 11.4% and 11.2%. The maximum thermal efficiency enhancement by using microencapsulated phase change slurry was 9.24% and the maximum electrical efficiency enhancement by using microencapsulated phase change slurry was 1.8%. Above all, the proposed compound parabolic concentrating photovoltaic/thermal collector with microencapsulated phase change slurry flow has potential for further development in solar energy application.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated a concentrating solar photovoltaic/thermal system that uses solar radiation in the visible and infrared ranges separately. In this system, photoelectric and photothermal conversions are achieved independently via the thermal unit and the photovoltaic (PV) module, respectively. The operation of the thermal unit is not affected by temperature limitations imposed by the PV module. The results indicate that water as the working fluid in the thermal unit directly absorbs 33% of the solar radiation. When the mass flow rate was reduced, the water temperature at the thermal unit outlet increased; however, both the temperature and the electrical efficiency of the solar cell remained constant. When the solar radiation increased from 640 to 3200 W/m(2), the concentrating photovoltaic/thermal (CPV/T) system produced high-grade heat with an only 1.4% drop in electrical efficiency. Abstract:A modified sliding-bed particle solar receiver was proposed to realize the coupling with upward concentrating system, which was a challenge for the previous designs. The newly added secondary reflection structure could not only adjust the optical path, but also preheated the particles flowing behind it. The overall principle of the receiver, the regulation mechanism of the particle layer thickness and the control and measurement method of the particle flowrate have all been described in detail. After the cold-state research on flow pattern, on-sun experiments based on a tower concentrating system were conducted to evaluate the receiver performance. Experimental results showed that the maximum outlet temperature of similar to 860 degrees C and single-pass temperature rise of similar to 510 degrees C were achieved. Under various DNI and time, the average outlet temperature ranging from similar to 535 degrees C to 782 degrees C, and positive efficiency ranging from similar to 51 % to 66 % were obtained. A concentrating-receiving coupled model was proposed to analyze the energy transfer process during the experiments, and to predict the receiver performance under higher incident power. Simulation results showed that the thermal loss rate could be reduced from 28.48 % to 13.22 % with 5 times magnification of the incident power, but the local overheating risk of the secondary reflective surface required attention.

Abstract:Uses of solar energy both on heat energy and electricity at the same time by concentrating sunlight and tracking the maximum output power of solar cells is an efficient way, which will increase the utility of solar energy and reduce the cost. A reflective concentrator is adopted in the system to increase solar intensity on solar cells while they are cooled underneath by water. In such a way, much less solar cell area is needed to produce the same amount of electricity and hence the cell cost is greatly reduced. And hot water could be supplied at the same time. A mathematical model for a photovoltaic/thermal solar system is set up. The performance of the system is simulated. Some influences are discussed, such as the concentration ratio, flow rate of the cooling water, thermal conductivity, thickness of solar cells, tracking of maximum output power of solar cells, etc. on the thermal efficiency, electrical efficiency and temperature of solar cells. A working cycle is designed and simulated.

Thermal and Power Characteristics of Ordinary Solar Cells in Concentrating Solar Collectors

Abstract:The cooling of concentrating photovoltaic solar cell systems was investigated experimentally with water as the coolant. Ordinary solar cells were used with solar fluxes of 0.85～20 kW/m2 without cooling and with natural convection of water. The resulting power was compared to the maximum electrical output of ordinary solar cells with no concentration at a light intensity of 1 kW/m2. The optimum concentration intensity of the ordinary solar cells with no cooling was found to be 3.3 kW/m2 at which the maximum electrical output was 177.7 W/m2 which was 2.7 times that with no concentration. The optimum concentration intensity of the ordinary solar cells with cooling was 6 kW/m2 at which the maximum electrical output was 318.5 W/m2 which was 4.8 times that with no concentration. The natural convection heat exchanger can ensure that the highest temperature of the solar cells is less than 60 ℃ for intensity from 0 to 20 kW/m2.

Abstract:Introduction: In the field of solar energy utilization, the construction of low cost and easy to process large concentrated photothermal system is a scientific problem to be solved. A linear Fresnel reflection solar concentrator is proposed in this paper. Methods: The position, tilt angle and width of the glass mirrors placed in the same plane are different to ensure that all the reflected light falls on the flat focal plane or cylindrical focal surface. According to the focusing principle of the concentrator, two experimental system platforms ware built. When a flat focal plane is used to receive radiation from the sun, the intensity distribution of focal plane light spot is uniform in theory. Results: The CCD measurement method is used to analyze the concentrated light spot under experimental conditions, and it is proved that the energy flux density on the focal plane is uniform. Placing monocrystalline silicon cells on the focal plane, the experimental results of p - v power generation voltammetry show that the power generation efficiency of monocrystalline silicon cell does not decrease due to the uniform solar energy density, which can reach 17.1%. The photothermal experiment is carried out by using one-dimensional tracking mode of sunlight. The concentrator reflects the sun's rays onto the vacuum collector tubes, heating the heat conduction oil flow in. The thermocouple measures the temperature of the heat conduction oil at the inlet and outlet of the vacuum collector tubes. The experimental photothermal conversion efficiency of this concentrator was analyzed and calculated through multiple groups of photothermal experiments, and compared with the theoretical concentrator efficiency. With two collector tubes in series, the theoretical photothermal conversion efficiency reaches 0.8 and the experimental photothermal conversion efficiency reaches about 0.74. Discussion: Because of its good concentrating performance and low cost, this type concentrator can be widely used in photothermal and photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:As photovoltaic industry has entered the fast development period with the advent of the energy crisis, concentrating photovoltaic technology has been one of the important options among renewable energy technologies. A high concentrating photovoltaic/thermal (HCPV/T) module has been experimentally studied and compared with the HCPV module. The experimental results indicate that the HCPV/T module shows better performance with 26.5% electrical efficiency and additional 49.3% thermal efficiency. Meanwhile, both of the numerical thermal and electrical models have been built to investigate the characteristics of the HCPV/T system. The temperature coefficient of photovoltaic cell efficiency is -0.054%/degrees C, and the drop in system electrical efficiency with temperature is -0.042%/degrees C. Analysis of the temperature coefficient of the system efficiency indicates that the overall efficiency is not sensitive to the coolant temperature. The results are expected to contribute to a better design and performance of HCPV/T systems, which have promising potential applications in the clean production. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This paper presents an optimized Concentrating Photovoltaic/Thermal system based on the direct absorption collection concept. In this system, working fluid water and solar cell separately utilizes solar radiation at different wavelengths to achieve photothermal conversion and photoelectric conversion. The system avoids the complicated fabrication technique in conventional CPV/T systems. The thermal unit has no temperature limitation from the PV module. As the incident solar irradiance increases from 800 W/m(2) to 3,600 W/m(2), the system can produce high grade heat, almost without sacrificing electrical efficiency (around 8.9% to 10.4%), and the total exergetic efficiency of the system increases from 12.8% to 18.4%.

Abstract:Solar energy M-CPC (Multi-section Compound Parabolic Concentrator, M-CPC) has the advantages of no tracking and static concentrating, synchronous collection of beam and diffuse radiation, simple structure and easy construction. Therefore, an integrated system based on the optimized design of M-CPC coupled with ECT (All-glass Evacuated Collector Tube, ECT) for solar photothermal conversion is constructed in present research. Moreover, the stability, reliability and applicability of the solar M-CPC system for energy capturing and photothermal conversion are verified by outdoor experiments and numerical calculations. The results show that the average heat collection efficiency of the integrated M-CPC system is 61.0%, the average output temperature of the fluid could reach 350.9K. In addition, the average relative error between the theoretical calculated value and the experimental measured value of fluid temperature rise is 5.1%, which indicates that the M-CPC system has the characteristic of low heat loss in the process of solar radiation utilization. All the above demonstrate that the M-CPC system has appropriate photothermal conversion as well as industrial manufacturing features.

Abstract:Combining the compound parabolic concentrator, phase change heat storage cores and vacuum tube solar air collector, a novel solar collector with both heat storage function and concentrating effect was proposed in this paper. Theoretical analysis and experimental investigation were used to illustrate the heat transfer principles and thermal performance of the novel collector. The results indicate that this type of collector not only increased the heat-collecting temperature and efficiency compared to the general solar collector, but also extended the heating time: the maximum output temperature could be improved by 4.5°C (110.8°C), maximum transient efficiency could be increased by 12.09% (73.09%) and heating time could be extended by approximately 3h during the day. This study can provide a reference for the future research of multi-technology integrated collectors.

Abstract:Concentrated photovoltaic/thermal (C-PV/T) systems exhibit superior output compared to common PV/T collectors. To address potential issues caused by excessive concentration of conventional parabolic concentrators and enhance the electro-thermal co-generation capability, this work proposes a low-concentrating PV/T (LC-PV/T) system that integrates two improved concentrator designs and a coolant of microencapsulated phase change material suspension (MPCMS). A numerical model is established to investigate the effects of working conditions and meteorological conditions on the optical, electrical and thermal performances. The results indicate that the improved concentrator designs effectively prevent over-concentration of sunlight while maintaining a comparable concentration ratio (CR). The electrical output increases with an increase in mass fraction, inlet mass flow rate and solar irradiance, but decreases with an increase in ambient temperature and inlet temperature. Conversely, thermal output increases with an increase in all of these parameters except for the inlet temperature. This system can achieve 17 % electrical efficiency and 72 % thermal efficiency due to the high-efficiency solar cells, optimized concentrator design, and unique MPCMS coolant. The system can produce a maximum electrical power of 4.76 kW/m 2 and a maximum thermal power of 19.53 kW/m 2 . Throughout the day, total electrical and thermal energies are approximately 4.1 kWh and 58.8 MJ.

Abstract:In this study, two dimensional parabolic collectors with tubular absorber are systematically analyzed. For more effective practical design, modifications are made in the profile of the collector, for example, truncating the reflector to a lower height, making a gap between the absorber and the reflector, maintaining a vacuum space inside the collector, and so on. By using ray tracing method, a numerical model is developed to study the performance of the modified collector. In the analysis, Beijing city is taken as one basic case; the collector orientation effect is discussed in a quantitative way. It is found that east-west orientation is best for the current collector. Seasonal collector performances are carefully simulated for different latitude conditions in this study. The results indicate that it is better to regulate the collector once in a season. The optimal collector slope angles for different periods are also identified in this study. Abstract:The application of compound parabolic concentrator (CPC) in photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) system increases the thermal and electrical energy gain, and the phase change material (PCM) helps cool down the operating temperature of cells. In this study, an open-air experiment is constructed to compare the overall performance of conventional flat photovoltaic (FPV), concentrating photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T-CPC) and concentrating photovoltaic/thermal phase change (PV/T-CPCM) system. The maximum PV backplane temperature is 69.9 °C in PV/T-CPC, 59.2 °C in PV/T-CPCM and 36.7 °C in FPV system respectively, and the PV temperature distribution non-uniformity in PV/T-CPC is 1.5 times higher than that in PV/T-CPCM system, showing the application of concentrator enhances the useful thermal energy and meanwhile the PCM effectively improves the local overheating and temperature distribution non-uniformity problem. The average thermal energy and efficiency of PV/T-CPCM are over 2462.0 kJ and 9.0% higher than those of PV/T-CPC system respectively. Besides, the electrical power/total exergy of PV/T-CPCM system are over 1.3/4 and 1.6/2 times of FPV and PV/T-CPC system respectively. Results present that the PV/T-CPCM system owns superior thermal, electrical and exergy performance among the three systems, and the application of CPC and PCM has great advantages in improving the overall performance of the PV/T unit.

Abstract:This paper presents the design optimization of a photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) system using both non-concentrated and concentrated solar radiation. The system consists of a photovoltaic (PV) module using silicon solar cell and a thermal unit based on the direct absorption collector (DAC) concept. First, the working fluid of the thermal unit absorbs the solar infrared radiation. Then, the remaining visible light is transmitted and converted into electricity by the solar cell. This arrangement prevents excessive heating of the solar cell which would otherwise negatively affects its electrical efficiency. The optical properties of the working fluid were modeled based on the damped oscillator Lorentz–Drude model satisfying the Kramers–Krönig relations. The coefficients of the model were retrieved by inverse method based on genetic algorithm, in order to (i) maximize transmission of solar radiation between 200nm and 800nm and (ii) maximize absorption in the infrared part of the spectrum from 800nm to 2000nm. The results indicate that the optimum system can effectively and separately use the visible and infrared part of solar radiation. The thermal unit absorbs 89% of the infrared radiation for photothermal conversion and transmits 84% of visible light to the solar cell for photoelectric conversion. When reducing the mass flow rate, the outflow temperature of the working fluid reaches 74°C, the temperature of the PV module remains around 31°C at a constant electrical efficiency about 9.6%. Furthermore, when the incident solar irradiance increases from 800W/m2 to 8000W/m2, the system generates 196°C working fluid with constant thermal efficiency around 40%, and the exergetic efficiency increases from 12% to 22%.
