Abstract:White Cell is a typical multiple-path absorption cell for absorption spectroscopy. For multi-path enhanced absorption application, we should make sure that the input light of the multiple-path cell can be output as much as possible to enhance absorption signal. Thus the astigmatism of the White cell should be analyzed for optimization as a key factor. In White cell, the astigmatism is difficult to be calculated as the meridian and sagittal planes of the beam would rotate with a different angle while at each reflection. In this article, the White cell is presented by defined 4x4 optical matrices as a nonsymmetrical system. The astigmatic difference would then be obtained from the eigenvalues of the partitioned matrices. The numerical computation and ray-tracing simulation results presented have proved the efficiency of this method. The astigmatism can be improved by properly choosing the distance h between the two rows of image spots on the field mirror.
Biconic White Multipass Cell Design Based On A Skew Ray-Tracing Model

Abstract:A biconic White multipass cell (bi-WMPC), designed as a compact, zero-geometrical-loss, anastigmatic optical system, capably used with an extended divergent source, is proposed. First, a skew ray-tracing model is developed for a conventional White-type multipass cell (WMPC), based on which the astigmatism is calculated, together with its sensitivity coefficients in relation to all-important optical structural parameters in various configurations. Next, a generalized bi-WMPC is designed to suppress the astigmatism, which leads to much smaller reflection spots on the field mirror compared to the conventional design. The demonstration of an optimized bi-WMPC initialized from a commercial WMPC (52 pass with a 0.8 m base length) suggests a 53 fold reduction of the wavefront error value from 79.187 lambda to 1.493 lambda, as well as the path-to-volume ratio (PVR) increase from 20.8 to 35.2 m/L. These improvements are critical for the design of a compact WMPC with a path length of tens to hundreds of meters. Presently developed skew ray-tracing models for a WMPC can also be applied to other free-form surfaces to further compensate the inherent aberrations induced by multiple off-axis reflections. Abstract:Aberration theory is a fundamental understanding of the optical aberrations and remains the best way to guide optical system design. The nodal aberration theory, which can be used to describe the aberration fields of freeform imaging systems, is limited by the small field of view (FOV) of the imaging system. In this paper, we propose a method to predict the induced aberration of Fringe Zernike terms with field-dependent footprints. The footprint of each field point is calculated in its corresponding local tangent plane of the optical surface; therefore, a more accurate prediction of the induced aberrations of Fringe Zernike terms can be achieved. Both the FOV and highly tilted architecture of freeform imaging systems are considered when calculating the footprints. Two examples are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, which we believe can provide good guidance for the design of freeform imaging systems with a relatively large FOV.

Abstract:A generalized method to accurately calculate astigmatism of the unit-magnification multipass system (UMS) is proposed. A practical coaxial optical transmission model is developed for the UMS. Astigmatism analysis is then made convenient by a 4 by 4 general transfer matrix. Astigmatism correction is significantly promoted, and hence further improvement in imaging quality can be expected. Good agreement between numerical simulations and Zemax ray tracing results verifies the effectiveness of this method. The resulted RMS spot size of this method is only 25% to 64% of other previous methods based on the golden section search for minimum astigmatism in real design cases. This method is helpful for the optical design of the UMS.

Abstract:We develop a way to estimate the approximate analytic astigmatism with a high accuracy for any unit-magnification multipass system (UMS). The coaxial optical transmission model for UMS is simplified based on the system's features. Furthermore, astigmatism is derived as a distinct form of vector addition and, thus, feasible analytic astigmatism can be obtained. The effectiveness of our method is verified by simulations for a Bernstein-Herzberg White cell. In our cases, the relative error of optimization for astigmatism correction by our method is smaller than 5 per thousand, which is only one-tenth of that by Kohn's method. Our method significantly improves the efficiency for astigmatism correction, and further benefits the optical design of a UMS.
Correction Algorithms of Pupil Aberration for Fourier Ptychographic Microscopy

Abstract:Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a newly developed imaging approach for achieving wide field and high resolution. However, image quality will degraded by the pupil aberration because of the limitation of geometrical optics. In this paper, two correction algorithms of pupil aberration combining original FPM algorithm with ptychographical iterative engine (PIE) are presented and justified. And the standard coefficients of Zernike polynomial are applied for constructing the pupil aberration in the simulation. Compared to original FPM algorithm, these algorithms add constraints to the sample and the pupil during each iteration, so that the image can be reconstructed and the pupil function can be recovered simultaneously. Furthermore, we illustrate that these algorithms can not only improve robustness, but also have faster convergence under different aberrations.
Compact Optical Multipass Matrix System Design Based on Slicer Mirrors.

Abstract:High path-to-volume ratio (PVR) and low-aberration-output beams are the two main criteria to assess the performance of multipass absorption cells. However, no substantial progress has been reported for large-numerical-aperture-coupled multipass cells, which is due to the accumulated aberrations caused by a large number of off-axis reflections. Based on Chernin's design, in this study, we modified Chernin's four-objective multipass matrix cell by using slicer mirrors to eliminate alignment difficulty and decrease the system volume. A generalized design routine based on user requirements is also proposed. Based on the automatic modeling tool package (Pyzdde) connected with Zemax and boundary conditions of the parameters selection proposed, a low-aberration-output beam and a high PVR are easily obtained compared with other multipass cells schemes. In one demo design, 108 passes (5×7 matrix spots) in a base length of 300 mm are presented. The PVR and peak-to-valley value wavefront errors are 67.5 m/L and 0.92 μm, respectively. Finally, a tolerance analysis of this optical multipass system is also presented. This work may provide better broadband optical absorption cells in terms of response time and a better detection sensitivity in versatile applications.

Abstract:During this study we constructed a generalized parametric modified four-objective multipass matrix system (MMS). We used an optical system comprising four asymmetrical spherical mirrors to improve the alignment process. The use of a paraxial equation for the design of the front transfer optics yielded the initial condition for modeling our MMS. We performed a ray tracing simulation to calculate the significant aberration of the system (astigmatism). Based on the calculated meridional and sagittal focus positions, the complementary focusing mirror was easily designed to provide an output beam free of astigmatism. We have presented an example of a 108-transit multipass system (5×7 matrix arrangement) with a relatively larger numerical aperture source (xenon light source). The whole system exhibits zero theoretical geometrical loss when simulated with Zemax software. The MMS construction strategy described in this study provides an anastigmatic output beam and the generalized approach to design a controllable matrix spot pattern on the field mirrors. Asymmetrical reflective mirrors aid in aligning the whole system with high efficiency. With the generalized design strategy in terms of optics configuration and asymmetrical fabrication method in this paper, other kinds of multipass matrix system coupled with different sources and detector systems also can be achieved.

Abstract:<p>In this work, a generalized and accurate calculation model of the multi-pass cell is proposed. This novel calculation model without any errors can describe the ray's propagation、reflection and refraction in the multi-pass cell, which will be suitable for kinds of multi-pass cells, such as the plane mirror multi-pass cell, ring multi-pass cell and the traditional multi-pass cell consisted by different optical elements including spherical mirror, lens or cylindrical mirror. By the numerical calculation, it is found that the non-paraxial ray can create a set of intricate spot patterns with respect to a standard Herriot circle spot pattern from the traditional ABCD matrix. The detailed numerical calculations of the different multi-pass cells are carried out, thus the improvement of the utilization efficiency of the mirror surface and production of a longer total optical path length by non-paraxial ray in a compact volume can be verified.</p>

Abstract:The shape of the aspheric lens changes caused by machining errors, resulting in a change in the optical transfer function, which affects the image quality. At present, there is no universally recognized tolerance criterion standard for aspheric surface. To study the influence of aspheric tolerances on the optical transfer function, the tolerances of polynomial fitting are allocated on the aspheric surface, and the imaging simulation is carried out by optical imaging software. Analysis is based on a set of aspheric imaging system. The error is generated in the range of a certain PV value, and expressed as a form of Zernike polynomial, which is added to the aspheric surface as a tolerance term. Through optical software analysis, the MTF of optical system can be obtained and used as the main evaluation index. Evaluate whether the effect of the added error on the MTF of the system meets the requirements of the current PV value. Change the PV value and repeat the operation until the acceptable maximum allowable PV value is obtained. According to the actual processing technology, consider the error of various shapes, such as M type, W type, random type error. The new method will provide a certain development for the actual free surface processing technology the reference value.

Abstract:An improved formula for the division of optical power in an achromatic hybrid refractive-diffractive singlet with small field of view as diffractive optical element is used to correct both axial chromatic and spherical aberrations. A better original configuration without the significant level of spherochromatism aberration introduced by the aspheric term of diffractive optical element for correcting the spherical aberration can be obtained. The correctness and effectiveness of the formula have been proven. The formula is also useful for the design of other hybrid optical systems.

Abstract:It is known that an axicon forms an aberrated Bessel beam when the input light is incident at an oblique angle, and the aberration can be removed by adding ellipticity to the axicon. The present work shows that the approach does not recover the Bessel beam along its entire depth of field when an additional tilted optical window is present in the beam path. This situation is increasingly common in advanced applications, where the sample may reside between two glass slides, within a vacuum chamber, or in a gas-tight enclosure. An improved method is introduced in which a single phase map on a spatial light modulator is used to generate the Bessel beam and compensate for both the aberration caused by oblique incidence (equivalent to the tilted axicon) and that due to an additional tilted optical window. Beam-quality metrics are used to quantify the effectiveness of the new method. This work extends the applicability of Bessel beams to other modes of fabrication, imaging, and signal processing.

Abstract:The design of the rigid contact lens (CL) with slope-constrained Q-type aspheres for myopia correction is presented in this paper. The spherical CL is the most common type for myopia correction, however the spherical aberration (SA) caused from the pupil dilation in dark leads to the degradation of visual acuity which cannot be corrected by spherical surface. The spherical and aspheric CLs are designed respectively based on Liou’s schematic eye model, and the criterion is the modulation transfer function (MTF) at the frequency of 100 line pair per mm, which corresponds to the normal vision of one arc-minute. After optimization, the MTF of the aspheric design is superior to that of the spherical design, because the aspheric surface corrects the SA for improving the visual acuity in dark. For avoiding the scratch caused from the contact profilometer, the aspheric surface is designed to match the measurability of the interferometer. The Q-type aspheric surface is employed to constrain the root-mean-square (rms) slope of the departure from a best-fit sphere directly, because the fringe density is limited by the interferometer. The maximum sag departure from a best-fit sphere is also controlled according to the measurability of the aspheric stitching interferometer (ASI). The inflection point is removed during optimization for measurability and appearance. In this study, the aspheric CL is successfully designed with Q-type aspheres for the measurability of the interferometer. It not only corrects the myopia but also eliminates the SA for improving the visual acuity in dark based on the schematic eye model.

Abstract:The optical axis sensitivity for the unit-magnification multipass system (UMS) is presented by using a general misaligned optical element transfer model. The generalized sensitivity factors SD1, SD2, ST1, and ST2 influenced by both the axial and angular misalignments of the objective mirrors in a UMS have been calculated for the first time. The Bernstein-Herzberg White Cells are used as an example, and their alignment tolerance and stability properties are found when their configurations change. The analysis in this paper is helpful for the design of other kinds of multipass gas cells (MGC) with high robustness and avoiding the violent vibration of the optical axis when the misalignment of each mirror is controlled within the tolerance range. Among the five possible perturbations sources, the misaligned factors δix,δiy,θix have more effects on the output beam’s position and the perturbed sources from δix,θix and δiy,θiy have more impacts on the output beam’s slope referred to as x-axis and y-axis, respectively. Higher reflection times mean smaller tolerance range. The results benefit the multipass cell design and the precise alignment of the mirrors within the cell with the purpose of long-term stability in measurements.
Optimization of Freeform Cylindrical Lens in Czerny-Turner Spectrometer System to Correct the Astigmatism by Using User Defined Error Function

Abstract:In the traditional Czerny-Turner spectrometer, the off-axis reflected light from the spherical mirror including astigmatismdue to the different focal lengths in tangential and sagittal planes. A method of using user defined surface (UDS) in CODE V to establish the freeform cylindrical lens to correct the astigmatism is proposed. By adding a freeform cylindrical lens that the curvature radius values at each positions before the CCD sensor, will achieve astigmatism correction during the broadband wavelength from 300nm to 800nm and improves system performance greatly, especially the power collection.Because of the special features of spectrometer that one object point will form multiple imaging points for the grating diffraction, a general auto optimization method offered by the software is valid. By calculating the RMS wavefront error under every worked wavelength, and get the weighted mean, one can use a user defined error function to evaluate the whole system imaging performance and optimize the freeform cylindrical lens. Dichotomization searching method is used during the parameters optimization.Result shows the performance of our Czerny- Turner spectrometer system with freeform cylindrical lens. Compared to the traditional Czerny- Turner spectrometer, the astigmatisms are well corrected and the power collection was enhanced 4.1 times..

Abstract:Using raytracing method (ZEMAX program), the reduction of SA of the whole human eye may be reduced via the combined effects of asphericity (Q) and the ratio of the front and back surface of an IOL. The overall SA for best image quality may be defined by Q* when the image position off axis is reduced to that of the paraxial. Our calculations show the following general features: (1) For a give Q value, the influence on the SA is proportional to the surface power; (2) for minimal whole eye SA, negative Q is needed in IOL; (3) for a given IOL power, the Q* is smaller when the front surface has a smaller power. All above features derived from numerical raytracing method are consistent with analytic formulas.

Abstract:This paper proposes the automatic lens-splitting optimization algorithm to correct spherical aberration by the interaction between ZEMAX and MATLAB. This method tackled the problem that classic optimization cannot add the elements automatically. A high numerical aperture collimator is considered for the test sample, and the selection of four thickness constraints (minimum center and edge of glass and air thickness constraints) is discussed. To determine the feasibility and applicability of this method, more design systems (a retro-focus objective system and a telesystem) are tested. The simulated results under the feasible thickness constraints show that the automatic lens-splitting optimization algorithm generates reasonable and realizable solutions.
