Abstract:We present a simple and accurate method of determininy the optical constant and physical thickness of the photoactive layer in a polymer solar cell.The applicabilities of the physics models including Forouhi-Bloomer and Lorentz-Oscillator models in transmission curve fitting are compared.This method is used to calculate the optical constants and film thicknesses of poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT) /[6,6]-phenyl C_(61)-butyric acid methyl ester(PCBM) and poly[2- methoxy-5-5(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-l,4-phenylenevinylene](MEHPPV) /PCBM bulk heterojunction,The calculated transmission curves fit to the experimental ones well.The results accord with those reported in the literature and from the step profiler,and their error is less than 4%.The optical constant and the physical thickness of polymer solar cell after the optimization process including thermal annealing and adding high-boiling-point additive are studied,and the results are consistent with the voltage-current characteristics of the cell.This method is suited for bulk heterojunction films and can be used in polymer solar cell optimization and detection system.

Abstract:The optical axis sensitivity for the unit-magnification multipass system (UMS) is presented by using a general misaligned optical element transfer model. The generalized sensitivity factors SD1, SD2, ST1, and ST2 influenced by both the axial and angular misalignments of the objective mirrors in a UMS have been calculated for the first time. The Bernstein-Herzberg White Cells are used as an example, and their alignment tolerance and stability properties are found when their configurations change. The analysis in this paper is helpful for the design of other kinds of multipass gas cells (MGC) with high robustness and avoiding the violent vibration of the optical axis when the misalignment of each mirror is controlled within the tolerance range. Among the five possible perturbations sources, the misaligned factors δix,δiy,θix have more effects on the output beam’s position and the perturbed sources from δix,θix and δiy,θiy have more impacts on the output beam’s slope referred to as x-axis and y-axis, respectively. Higher reflection times mean smaller tolerance range. The results benefit the multipass cell design and the precise alignment of the mirrors within the cell with the purpose of long-term stability in measurements.

Abstract:We describe the use of a Wigner distribution function approach for exploring the problem of extending the depth of field in a hybrid imaging system. The Wigner distribution function, in connection with the phase-space curve that formulates a joint phase-space description of an optical field, is employed as a tool to display and characterize the evolving behavior of the amplitude point spread function as a wave propagating along the optical axis. It provides a comprehensive exhibition of the characteristics for the hybrid imaging system in extending the depth of field from both wave optics and geometrical optics. We use it to analyze several well-known optical designs in extending the depth of field from a new viewpoint. The relationships between this approach and the earlier ambiguity function approach are also briefly investigated. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.
A New Method Of Calculating The Diffraction Efficiency For Diffraction/Refraction Infrared Hybrid System

Abstract:In this paper, a new method of calculating the diffraction efficiency for diffraction / refraction infrared hybrid system is given. By using this method, an automatic measurement system is designed. This system covers the wavelength range of 1 similar to 3 mu m, 3 similar to 5 mu m and 8 similar to 12 mu m. We use a blackbody as the energy source, put the lens which is to be measured above a computer controlled turntable in order to gain different results in different filed of view. We also have several relay lenses to cope with long or negative focal length. We use two types of detectors to deal with wavelength range of 1 similar to 3 mu m and 3 similar to 12 mu m. Both the detector and preamplifier are assembled together so we can easily change them for different wavelength ranges. To improve the accuracy of the measurements, a new theory of measuring the main energy is developed to minimize the negative impacts of other diffraction orders and the environment. We use an adjustable slit cooperating with a two-axis stage to scan the focal point and by adjusting the width of the slit we can reduce the energy of other diffraction orders and the environment that may come into our detector. During the experiment process we can manually control the slit and two-axis stage to improve the efficiency and use our computer program to improve the accuracy. The energy modulator and lock-in amplifier also help to improve the accuracy of our system. We designed two standard lenses for the 3 similar to 5 mu m wavelength range. Both of them are made of the same material, have the same focal length of 200mm and their shape is almost the same. The only difference between them is that one of them is pure refraction piece which acts as a reference and the other one has a diffraction surface to achromatic aberration. The result fits our theory well and the possible causes of the differences are discussed. This system has a practical meaning in the quality evaluating of infrared hybrid system.
Biconic White Multipass Cell Design Based On A Skew Ray-Tracing Model

Abstract:A biconic White multipass cell (bi-WMPC), designed as a compact, zero-geometrical-loss, anastigmatic optical system, capably used with an extended divergent source, is proposed. First, a skew ray-tracing model is developed for a conventional White-type multipass cell (WMPC), based on which the astigmatism is calculated, together with its sensitivity coefficients in relation to all-important optical structural parameters in various configurations. Next, a generalized bi-WMPC is designed to suppress the astigmatism, which leads to much smaller reflection spots on the field mirror compared to the conventional design. The demonstration of an optimized bi-WMPC initialized from a commercial WMPC (52 pass with a 0.8 m base length) suggests a 53 fold reduction of the wavefront error value from 79.187 lambda to 1.493 lambda, as well as the path-to-volume ratio (PVR) increase from 20.8 to 35.2 m/L. These improvements are critical for the design of a compact WMPC with a path length of tens to hundreds of meters. Presently developed skew ray-tracing models for a WMPC can also be applied to other free-form surfaces to further compensate the inherent aberrations induced by multiple off-axis reflections. Abstract:White Cell is a typical multiple-path absorption cell for absorption spectroscopy. For multi-path enhanced absorption application, we should make sure that the input light of the multiple-path cell can be output as much as possible to enhance absorption signal. Thus the astigmatism of the White cell should be analyzed for optimization as a key factor. In White cell, the astigmatism is difficult to be calculated as the meridian and sagittal planes of the beam would rotate with a different angle while at each reflection. In this article, the White cell is presented by defined 4x4 optical matrices as a nonsymmetrical system. The astigmatic difference would then be obtained from the eigenvalues of the partitioned matrices. The numerical computation and ray-tracing simulation results presented have proved the efficiency of this method. The astigmatism can be improved by properly choosing the distance h between the two rows of image spots on the field mirror.

Abstract:The coupling among waveguides on different planes occurs in both transverse and vertical directions. Using the spatial multiwaveguide system, we can interconnect devices in different layers effectively. Based on the weakly coupled-mode theory, the planar waveguide coupling theory is generalized to spatial multiwaveguide system, and the coupled-mode equations of the spatial multiwaveguide system are presented. As an application example, the coupled-mode equation is applied to analyze the coupling properties in spatial three-and four-waveguide systems. The analytical expressions of light intensity distributions and coupling length in the two specific cases are given, and the three-dimensional full-vector beam propagation method is used to verify the analytical results. The analysis result shows that the spatial multiwaveguide system permits uniform and nonuniform power splitting in two orthogonal directions. These analytical formulas are useful in designing three-dimensional directional couplers, which is based on spatial multiwaveguide coupling.

Abstract:By employing Marcatili's principle, the two-dimensional spatial four-waveguide system is decomposed as two perpendicular five-layer slab waveguides independently in the cross-section of the waveguides. The analytical model that can be interpreted appropriately by variable separation method is proposed. The first order correction for deviations of the model and practical structure is done by perturbation theory. The expressions of the first and second order propagation constants, static field distributions, coupling coefficient and propagation characteristic are presented. The feasibility and accuracy of the model are demonstrated by comparing the calculation results with finite difference solving semi-vector wave equation and beam propagation method. A coarse wavelength demultiplexer based on spatial four-waveguide system, including three common wavelengths 1.31 μm, 1.49 μm, and 1.55 μm of the triplex transistor in today's fiber-to-home, is designed with the insertion loss 0.68 dB. Further optimization of the separate outputs and waveguide structure can obtain higher qualities.
Analysis of infrared radiation from optical window with graded temperature distribution

Abstract:When the outside temperature rapidly changes, there is graded temperature distribution at optical window in infrared detection systems and the detection sensitivity will be affected. It is necessary to analyze the response of detector according to the temperature distribution. In this paper the graded temperature distribution is described in optical system parameters as environment data, the radial graded temperature function using orthogonal polynomial method is created, and the temperature of any position at optical window can be calculated easily. Based on the principles of blackbody radiation, the sampling plans of wavelength and thermal radiation source surface are presented. Having imaged each surface at object space or image space, the common entrance for infrared radiation from the window is found and named as thermal pupil, then sampling at the entrance to create millions of rays. These rays are traced through the system with energy and the power spectral density is calculated. Taken an infrared optical system as an example, the radiation of its optical window with temperature of 30 degrees C and 55 degrees C +/- 5 degrees C is analyzed. As shown by the example that the radial temperature gradient will lead to nonhomogeneous noise at the image.

Abstract:A ring multi-pass optical cell which consists of three spherical mirrors to form a ring cell has been proposed to achieve a long path length in compact volumes. As with the astigmatic multi-pass optical cell, the dense beam spot pattern from the ring multi-pass optical cell more evenly fills the interior surface of the spherical mirror. The disadvantage of the astigmatic cell is that it requires extremely high-precision mirrors to ensure that the pattern will close. However, with the ring multi-pass optical cell, adjusting the inclination angle of spherical mirrors can make up for errors of the mirrors, and the self-consistent condition always can be established. The desirable patterns are based on the given base length, the inclination angle of spherical mirrors, the coupling window from the optical axis and the incident angle of the beam. In consideration of the astigmatism of the off-axis mirror, the matrix optics is employed in describing and analyzing the behaviors of the ring multi-pass optical cell. The new ring multi-pass cell presented in the paper achieves a 120 m optical path length in a volume of 717 cm3. The optical simulation based on the ABCD matrix and optical software shows the validity and the usefulness of the techniques proposed.

Abstract:A novel folded multi-pass cell consisting of three non-coaxial mirrors (spherical mirror or plane mirror) is proposed for laser spectroscopy. Three mirrors of the folded multi-pass cell can arrange in V-shape to form a stable non-coaxial multi-pass cell. Furthermore, in order to research the stability of the multi-pass cell under off-axis mirror's astigmatism circumstance, an equivalent coaxial multi-pass cell and modified ABCD matrix model for the spot pattern of the folded multi-pass cell is proposed, by which a series of the detailed numerical calculations were implemented to analyze the optical path length of the multi-pass cell. Many spot patterns obtained with a high fill factor improve the utilization efficiency of the surface of the mirror and produce a longer total optical path length. The several typical types of folded multi-pass cells consisting of the different mirrors and base lengths were selected to demonstrate the cell's self-consistent condition and power for a longer-optical path length. Three effective optical path lengths of 49.6, 97.6 and 173.6 m were obtained, respectively.

Abstract:An analytical approach about the general type of step-index optical fiber modes and their variations is presented in this paper. The theoretical model is solved through our analytical method. With the boundary conditions, a composite equation set is established and solved. The precise results of all modes are achieved with a high-precision numerical solution. In this paper, the key modal qualities contain electromagnetic fields' distributions, the effective refractive index, and its tendencies. And the modal sensitivity is based on the partial derivative of the effective refractive index ( $\partial$ n eff / $\partial$ n i and $\partial$ n eff / $\partial$ r i ). The derivative rule of special function allows analyzing the sensitivity of modes. Furthermore, four qualitative deductions are derived during the process, including the qualitative analysis of modes and their variation, several of which are supported with previous experiments. Our work is beneficial for exploiting new fiber and researching relative fiber sensors.
Generalized Optical Design of the Multiple-Row Circular Multi-Pass Cell with Dense Spot Pattern

Abstract:We present a generalized method for designing a novel circular multi-pass cell (MPC) with multifold overall optical path length, or alternatively enlarged path-to-volume ratio in the same magnification compared to traditional version, by exploiting the vertical dimension of cavity mirrors. Multiple rows of reflection spots can be generated on arbitrary number of different horizontal planes within the cell that consists of two easy-fabricating circular spherical mirrors. Base on this method, one can arbitrarily determine the interval of reflection spots in both horizontal and vertical directions, so that almost seamless and regular distributed dense spot pattern, and consequently large path-to-volume ratio can be achieved. A series of q-preserving configurations of the multiple-row circular multi-pass cell are calculated and simulated, in which the q-parameters of probe Gaussian beams can be approximately unchanged after the whole transmission within the cells. The maximum optical path length among these simulation cases is 201.8 m within 427.2 mL volume. Furthermore, we demonstrate a practical optical setup with 21.9 m optical path length within 100.1 mL, which is the smallest volume case among the existing actual MPCs with similar overall optical path lengths.
Investigation on Sensitivity Enhancement for Optical Fiber Speckle Sensors.

Abstract:We present a detailed theoretical and experimental study on the sensitivity enhancement for multimode fiber (MMF) speckle sensor. Using mode coupling theory, we derive an expression showing that the sensitivity of the MMF speckle sensor depends on the intensity profile of the MMF modes. Particularly, we use our theory to study the influence of the spatial filtering window on the sensitivity, and the experimental results have found a good agreement with the theory. Our results suggest that the sensitivity of an MMF speckle sensor can be greatly enhanced by adjusting the size and location of the spatial filtering window. An 80-fold improvement on sensitivity was achieved in our experiment, as compared with the conventional MMF speckle sensor with the filtering window placed at the center of the speckle field.

Abstract:A general and effective method is presented to solve the eigenvalue problem of a circular multilayar dielectric waveguide. And the transmission characteristics for different kinds of fiber gratings are calculated with rigorous vector mode matching procedure. This general method is applied to a detailed investigation on the phenomenon of mode coupling between cladding-mode and core mode to that less attention is paid in the literature. Our numerical results show that the present method is simple and effective.

Abstract:In this work, a generalized and accurate calculation model of the multi-pass cell is proposed. This novel calculation model without any errors can describe the ray's propagation、reflection and refraction in the multi-pass cell, which will be suitable for kinds of multi-pass cells, such as the plane mirror multi-pass cell, ring multi-pass cell and the traditional multi-pass cell consisted by different optical elements including spherical mirror, lens or cylindrical mirror. By the numerical calculation, it is found that the non-paraxial ray can create a set of intricate spot patterns with respect to a standard Herriot circle spot pattern from the traditional ABCD matrix. The detailed numerical calculations of the different multi-pass cells are carried out, thus the improvement of the utilization efficiency of the mirror surface and production of a longer total optical path length by non-paraxial ray in a compact volume can be verified.

Abstract:The optical path difference (OPD) equations of the dual Wollaston prisms (DWP) with an adjustable air gap (AG) are derived by the wave normal tracing method, which is suitable for arbitrary incidence plane and angle. The spatial distribution of the OPD for various AG is presented. The validity of the OPD equation is verified by comparing the calculated interferograms with experimentally observed one. The performance of a novel static birefringent Fourier transform imaging spectrometer (SBFTIS) based on the DWP is investigated. The spectral resolution can be adjusted by changing the AG and the field of view can reach 10.0°, which is much larger than that predicted by our previous work. The results obtained in this article provide a theoretical basis for completely describing the optical transmission characteristic of the DWP and developing the high-performance birefringent spectral zooming imaging spectrometer.
