Abstract:We demonstrate a 980-nm Q-switch Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser by a multilayer molybdenum sulfide polymer composite as the broadband saturable absorber which is prepared by the chemical vapor deposition method. We achieve passively Q-switching operations at 978 nm with the pulse width of 2.7 and 0.63 μs, corresponding to the repetition rate of 212 and 221 kHz, respectively. The maximum output power is 127 mW. It is the first time that MoS 2 Q-switched Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser at 980 nm is demonstrated. The experimental results show that few-layer MoS 2 is a promising broadband saturable absorber material.

Abstract:We report on a highly efficient, compact, passively Q-switched Yb:KLu(WO4)2 laser, with few-layer MoS2 or WS2 acting as saturable absorber. A maximum output power of 2.45 W was generated at a repetition rate of 2.52 MHz, with 6.49 W of pump power absorbed in passively Q-switched operation induced by MoS2; the largest pulse energy, shortest duration, and highest peak power were, respectively, 1.27 μJ, 43 ns, and 29.5 W. With WS2 as saturable absorber, the output power attainable in stable Q-switched operation was 1.87 W, produced with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 37% and a slope efficiency of 71%. The minimum pulse duration obtained was 39 ns; while the largest pulse energy and highest peak power were 1.19 μJ and 30.5 W.

Abstract:We report an efficient high-power Yb:YCa4O(BO3)3 laser that was passively Q-switched by a few-layer WS2 saturable absorber. A maximum average output power of 4.05 W was produced at a pulse repetition rate of 606 kHz, with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 40.5% and a slope efficiency of 47%. The resulting pulse energy, duration, and peak power were 6.67 mu J, 66 ns, and 101 W, respectively. Our work demonstrates the great potential of few-layer WS2 and other 2D transition metal dichalcogenides as saturable absorbers for developing high-power, high-repetition-rate, nanosecond, pulsed solid-state lasers.

Abstract:In this paper, using the new WSe2 nanosheets as the saturable absorber (SA), a passively Q-switched (PQS) Tm:YAP laser was faultlessly realized. A 1.29-W average output power at 1988.3 nm and a 392.7-ns pulse duration were obtained with a 12.3% optical conversion efficiency, and a 11.3-mu J pulse energy and a 28.9-W peak power were gained with a 12.5-W pump power. In addition, the beam quality factors of Tm:YAP laser in X and Y directions were less than 1.2 under continuous wave (CW) and PQS mode.

Abstract:A few-layer graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) nanosheet film on an yttrium aluminum garnet substrate was fabricated and employed as saturable absorber for a passively Q-switched Ho, Pr:LiLuF4 laser at 2.95 mu m. Under an absorbed pump power of 3.89 W at a pump wavelength of 1.15 mu m, a maximum average output power of 101 mW was realized with a pulse duration of 420 ns and a repetition rate of 93 kHz. Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate a passively Q-switched Ho3+/Pr3+ co-doped fluoride fiber laser centered at 2865.7 nm using a tungsten disulfide (WS2) saturable absorber (SA) for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. A multilayer WS2 film was fabricated using the sulfidation grown method and then transferred onto an Au mirror to act as the cavity feedback and SA device in a linear cavity. Under a launched pump power of 318.5 mW, stable Q-switched pulses with an average output power of 48.4 mW were achieved with a pulse duration of 1.73 mu s and repetition rate of 131.6 kHz, resulting in a pulse energy of 0.37 mu J. Our experimental results confirm that WS2 can be an effective nonlinear modulator that is suitable for pulse generation at the 3 mu m waveband.

Abstract:Passive Q-switching or mode-locking by placing a saturable absorber inside the laser cavity is one of the most effective and popular techniques for pulse generation. However, most of the current saturable absorbers cannot work well in the visible spectral region, which seriously impedes the progress of passively Q-switched/mode-locked visible pulsed fibre lasers. Here, we report a kind of visible saturable absorber-two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs, e.g. WS2, MoS2, MoSe2), and successfully demonstrate compact red-light Q-switched praseodymium (Pr3+)-doped all-fibre lasers. The passive Q-switching operation at 635 nm generates stable laser pulses with similar to 200 ns pulse duration, 28.7 nJ pulse energy and repetition rate from 232 to 512 kHz. This achievement is attributed to the ultrafast saturable absorption of these layered TMDs in the visible region, as well as the compact and all-fibre laser-cavity design by coating a dielectric mirror on the fibre end facet. This work may open a new route for next-generation high-performance pulsed laser sources in the visible (even ultraviolet) range.

Under an absorbed pump power of 4.51 W, the shortest pulse duration of 571 ns was realized with an average output power of 147 mW and a repetition rate of 89.3 kHz, corresponding to a single pulse energy of 1.65 mu J and a peak power of 2.88 W. The results indicate that WSe2 is a promising candidate for application as a saturable absorber to generate mid-IR pulsed lasers at similar to 3 mu m. Abstract:We demonstrate that it is possible for a few-layer WSe2/Sapphire to act in specific high-gain solid-state lasers as both saturable absorber for passive Q-switching and as etalon mirror for output coupling. A passively Q-switched Yb:LuPO4 microchip laser formed in this manner is realized. With 11.5 W of pump power absorbed, a maximum output power of 1.8 W is produced at a pulse repetition rate of 1.2 MHz with a slope efficiency of 25%; the resulting pulse energy, duration, and peak power are, respectively, 1.5 mu J, 30 ns, and 50 W. Our work provides a simple way of making compact, reliable, high-repetition-rate pulsed microchip or miniature solid-state lasers based on 2D saturable absorbers.

Abstract:A passively switched Ho3+, Pr3+ codoped fluoride fiber laser using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) is demonstrated. Q-switching and partial mode-locking were observed with the output power produced at a slope efficiency of 24% with respect to the absorbed pump power. Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional vanadium disulfide (VS2) materials, as typical TMDs, have been successfully prepared and applied to lasers. Here, multilayer VS2 films were used as a saturable absorber (SA) in an all-solid-state visible laser. The VS2 films have a modulation depth of 34.1% and a saturation intensity of 27.5 µJ/cm2. Three wavelength passively Q-switched lasers were located at 522.7 nm, 639.4 nm, and 720.9 nm, respectively. The shortest pulse width for the three Q-switched lasers were 120 ns, 93 ns, and 108 ns. The experimental results indicate that VS2 is a promising SA material in an all-solid-state visible laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time as far as Re known, a passively Q-switched operation of a Nd:YVO4 laser in which a Cr4+:YAG crystal and a laser-diode bar are used as the saturable absorber and the pump source, respectively. Stable laser pulses as short as 28 ns with 20-mu J energy can be generated with this laser, which has the advantages of simplicity, high efficiency, and good long-term stability. Abstract:A 1.3 mu m passively Q-switched Nd:KLu(WO4)(2) laser under direct 880nm pumping is reported. Graphene on a silicon carbide is used as the saturable absorber. Stable Q-switched laser pulses are obtained at the central wavelength of 1355.3 nm. Under an absorbed pump power of 14 W, the average output power, pulse repetition rate and single pulse energy are 890mW, 135 kHz, and 6.6 mu J, respectively. Abstract:An iron-cobalt co-doped ZnSe polycrystalline (Co,Fe:ZnSe) was prepared by the thermal diffusion method, and its nonlinear optical response was characterized for the first time. Using the as-prepared Co,Fe:ZnSe as a saturable absorber (SA), the blue laser diode pumped Q-switched Pr:YLF laser at 607 nm (orange), and 639 nm (red) was successfully realized. For 607 nm, the Q-switched laser delivered the shortest pulse width of 59 ns with a repetition rate of 15 kHz. For 639 nm, the shortest pulse width and maximum repetition rate were 119 ns and 32 kHz, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the Co,Fe:ZnSe SA has a great potential for optical pulse generation in the visible region.
