Abstract:We report an experimental terabit coherent optical transmission system with 1.25Tb/s Nyquist PDM 64-QAM signal. This is achieved over 400km standard single-mode fiber with erbium-doped fiber amplifier only amplification. The net spectral efficiency is 9.13b/s/Hz.

Abstract:We propose a time domain structure of channel estimation for coherent optical communication systems, which employs training sequence based equalizer and is transparent to arbitrary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats. Enabled with this methodology, 1.02Tb/s polarization division multiplexed 32QAM Nyquist pulse shaping signal with a net spectral efficiency of 7.46b/s/Hz is transmitted over standard single-mode fiber link with Erbium-doped fiber amplifier only amplification. After 1190km transmission, the average bit-error rate is lower than the 20% hard-decision forward error correction threshold of 1.5 x 10(-2). The transmission distance can be extended to 1428km by employing intra-subchannel nonlinear compensation with the digital back-propagation method. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate 1.728 Tb/s (16 x 108 Gb/s) direct-detection wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission over 80 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with Nyquist 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (64-QAM) and half-cycle subcarrier modulation. Each channel carries single sideband 18 GBaud 64-QAM signal and the channel spacing is 27 GHz. Considering 20% soft-decision forward error correction and frame redundancy, a net spectral efficiency record of 3.25 b/s/Hz is achieved for 100 G single polarization direct-detection WDM transmission. Abstract:We demonstrate three-channel WDM transmission of 12.84-Tb/s/ch polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 64-QAM over 320-km SMF-28 with hybrid amplification spans. Each 10-Tb/s superchannel comprises one hundred Nyquist DWDM subchannels in 1275-GHz spectrum occupancy, yielding a spectral efficiency of 7.9 b/s/Hz. The BER of all channels after transmission over 320 km is measured smaller than 2×10-2, the third generation FEC limit.

Abstract:We report the successful transmission of 64 Tb/s capacity (640 107 Gb/s with 12.5 GHz channel spacing) over 320 km reach utilizing 8-THz of spectrum in the C+L -bands at a net spectral efficiency of 8 bit/s/Hz. Such a result is accomplished by the use of raised-cosine pulse-shaped PDM-36QAM modulation, intradyne detection, both pre- and post-transmission digital equalization, and ultra-large-area fiber. We discuss in detail the digital modulation technology and signal processing algorithms used in the experiment, including a new two-stage, blind frequency-search-based frequency-offset estimation algorithm and a more computationally efficient carrier-phase recovery algorithm.

Abstract:We have realized the first field transmission of 8 × 216.8-Gb/s Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexing (N-WDM) signals over 1750-km G.652 fiber consisting of 950-km real and 800-km lab fibers with erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-only amplification. The average loss per span is 21.6 dB. Each channel is modulated with 54.2-Gbaud (216.8-Gb/s) polarization-division-multiplexing carrier-suppressed return-to-zero quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-CSRZ-QPSK) data on a 50-GHz grid giving a record spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 b/s/Hz. Digital post filtering and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are introduced into the offline digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver to suppress noise, linear crosstalk and filtering effects. We have also investigated the co-transmission of 200 G PDM-CSRZ-QPSK and 200 G PDM 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PDM-16 QAM) signals on a 50-GHz grid, and found that PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signals have better bit-error-rate (BER) performance for both back-to-back and 700-km transmission cases. Meanwhile, PDM-16 QAM signals are subject to larger crosstalk from the neighboring Nyquist QPSK channels.

Abstract:Employing PDM-RZ-8QAM modulation, digital coherent detection and EDFA-only amplification, we demonstrate 25 GHz-spaced, 320times114Gb/s DWDM transmission through seven spans of ultra-low-loss fiber (average span length/loss of 82.8 km/14.6 dB) with a record capacity of 32Tb/s.

Abstract:Nyquist pulse shaping is a promising technique for high-speed optical fiber transmission. We experimentally demonstrate the generation and transmission of a 1.76Tb/s, polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) Nyquist pulse shaping super-channel over 714km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) only amplification. The superchannel consists of 40 subcarriers tightly spaced at 6.25GHz with a spectral efficiency of 7.06b/s/Hz. The experiment is successfully enabled with the modified single carrier frequency domain estimation and equalization (SCFDE) scheme by performing training sequence based channel estimation in frequency domain and subsequent channel equalization in time domain. After 714km transmission, the bit-error-rate (BER) of all subcarriers are lower than the forward error correction limit of 3.8 x 10(-3). (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Employing raised-cosine pulse-shaped polarization- division-multiplexing (PDM) 36 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format and standard single-mode fiber (SMF-28), 16 x 107-Gb/s PDM-36QAM signals in 12.5-GHz spacing have been realized to transmit over 400 km with a hybrid erbium-doped fiber amplifier and Raman amplification. The spectral efficiency (SE) for the 100 Gb/s is up to 8 b/s/Hz. This is the longest transmission for 100 Gb/s with an SE of 8 b/s/Hz.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an eight-channel WDM coherent system with 50GHz frequency spacing which can realize the transmission of 528-Gb/s/channel probabilistically-shaped 64QAM signal over 3000km fiber in a terrestrial system. Based on the GMI and NGMI results, about 100% transmission-distance improvement can be attained after probabilistic shaping.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a hardwareand spectral-efficient large-capacity single-carrier radio-overfiber system at Q-band (33-50 GHz), employing high-level polarization-division-multiplexing 64-ary quadrature-amplitudemodulation (PDM-64QAM) modulation and heterodyne coherent detection. In our demonstrated system, up to 10-GBd (120-Gb/s) PDM-64QAM vector millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal at 37.5 GHz can be generated and delivered over 1-m wireless distance, with a bit-error ratio (BER) less than the hard-decision forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Our demonstrated system can also generate up to 16-GBd (192-Gb/s) PDM-64QAM vector mm-wave signal at 37.5 GHz, with a BER less than the soft-decision FEC threshold of 1 × 10-2. During the receiver digital signal processing, the employment of largetap decision-directed least-mean-square equalization after carrier recovery significantly improves the system performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate single-carrier PDM-64QAM modulated wireless mm-wave signal delivery.

Abstract:The Nyquist wavelength-division multiplexing technique enable a solution to achieve high spectral efficiency in long-haul transmission system. Compare to polarization division multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying, even high-level modulation scheme such as polarization division multiplexing 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation is much more sensitive to intra-channel noise and inter-channel linear crosstalk caused by Nyquist wavelength-division multiplexing. We experimentally demonstrated the generation and transmission of the 6 × 128-Gb/s Nyquist wavelength-division multiplexing sixteen quadrature amplitude modulation signal over 1200-km single-mode fiber (SMF)-28 with Erbium-doped fiber amplifier only amplification with a net SE of 7.47 b/s/Hz, which is so far, to our knowledge, the highest SE for the signal with the bit rate above 100-Gb/s using the polarization-division multiplexing 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation format. This experiment was successfully enabled by digital-signal-processing (DSP) pre-equalization of transmitter-side impairments and DSP post-equalization of the channel and receiver-side impairments. Nyquist-band is considered in the pre- equalization to enhance the tolerance of the polarization-division multiplexing 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation to the aggressive spectral shaping. The bit error rate for each of the 6 channels is smaller than the limitation of the forward-error-correction limit of 3.8 ×10-3 after 1200-km SMF-28 transmission.

Abstract:The Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexing technique (N-WDM) enables a solution to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) in long-haul transmission systems. We experimentally demonstrated the generation and transmission of the 6 × 144-Gb/s N-WDM PDM-64QAM signal over 80-km single-mode fiber SMF-28 with erbium-doped-fiber-amplifier-only amplification. It achieved a net SE of 10 bits/s/Hz assuming 20% forward error correction overhead. This experiment was successfully enabled by digital-signal-processing (DSP) pre-equalization of transmitter-side impairments and DSP post-equalization of the channel and receiver-side impairments. Nyquist-band is considered in the pre-equalization to enhance the tolerance of the PDM-64QAM to the aggressive spectral shaping. The benefit from the proposed Nyquist-band pre-equalization scheme was also experimentally demonstrated.
