Abstract:A high-performance broadband polarization-independent directional coupler is designed by using asymmetric-waveguides configuration on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Through the design of cascaded directional couplers, the coupling characteristics of the light with the orthogonally polarized transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) can be manipulated, so that the coupling strength could be equivalent between TE and TM polarizations within an ultra-broadband. Couplers with 50% splitting ratio are designed and simulated for operating in the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for both polarizations. Within the 100 nm wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, the deviations of splitting ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±3.3% and ±6.2%, respectively. And within the 200 nm wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the deviations for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±9.0% and ±7.8%, respectively. The footprint of this polarization-independent directional coupler is only 21 μm × 1.6 μm.

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a polarization-insensitive 3-dB coupler by using tapered three-guide structure based on the silicon-on insulator. Owing to the symmetrical and tapered structure, the dependency on wavelength and polarization are both alleviated. The coupling length of the 3-dB coupler is about 120 μm. The measured wavelength-dependent power imbalance is less than 1.1 dB and the maximum polarization-dependent imbalance is about 1.0 dB in the wavelength region from 1520 to 1600 nm. This letter shows potential applications in polarization and wavelength division multiplexed systems.

Abstract:A high uniformity and broad bandwidth Y junction optical beam splitter is proposed and analyzed in this paper based on silicon-on-insulator platform. By replacing the uniform branch with the multimode tapered branch, the bandwidth and the power uniformity of two output ports are unproved prominently. Furthermore, the sensitivity to fabrication accuracy is reduced by widening the splitting angle. The simulation and the experimental results confirm that the bandwidth is larger than 100 nm, the power uniformity of two output ports is enhanced 4 dB, whereas the insertion loss is less than 0.6 dB and the return loss is larger than 26 dB, respectively.

Abstract:Fiber-to-chip couplers are an essential part of the interfaces to integrated photonic devices, and high coupling efficiency over a broad wavelength range is preferred for most applications. Furthermore, couplers with low polarization dependence are also of great practical significance. While tapered waveguide couplers have been applied to overcome the mode mismatch between waveguides and fibers, the inherent geometric asymmetry of high-index-contrast waveguides, especially for those with a thick core layer, leads to polarization dependence in their performance. Here a triple-tip spot size converter as an edge coupler is proposed to improve the polarization insensitivity and coupling efficiency over a broadband range for either thick or thin waveguides. For both TE and TM polarization, it is shown that our design can have below 1 dB coupling loss over a 600 nm window around 1550 nm wavelength for Si3N4 waveguides of typical core thicknesses. Meanwhile, this kind of coupler also shows better fabrication and assembly tolerance than the traditional single-tip spot size converter (inverse taper coupler). Our proposed device can be easily fabricated in simple fabrication processes compared to other designs and have good compatibility with the standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor processes.
Compact and Low-Loss 1 × 3 Polarization-Insensitive Optical Power Splitter Using Cascaded Tapered Silicon Waveguides

Abstract:In this Letter, a 1 × 3 polarization-insensitive optical power splitter based on cascaded tapered silicon waveguides is proposed and experimentally demonstrated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. By utilizing the particle swarm optimization algorithm and the finite difference time domain method, the structural parameters of the coupling regions are carefully designed to achieve polarization-insensitive property, compact size, low insertion loss, high uniformity, and broad bandwidth. The coupling length can be as short as 7.3 µm. Our measurement results show that, at 1550 nm, the insertion losses of the fabricated device operating in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) polarizations are, respectively, 0.068 dB and 0.62 dB. Within a bandwidth from 1525 to 1575 nm, the insertion loss is lower than 0.82 dB and the uniformity is less than 1 dB for the fabricated device operating in TE polarization, while the fabricated device operating in TM polarization can have an insertion loss smaller than 1.50 dB and a uniformity lower than 1 dB from 1528 to 1582 nm.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated a compact, broadband, and low-loss-mode-evolution-based 2 x 23 dB coupler on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The waveguide widths and separations of the coupler were tapered in an optimal manner using the shortcuts to the adiabaticity method. The coupler, with a similar to 70 mu m total length and 200 nm feature size, exhibited <0.3 dB measured excess loss over a broadband wavelength range from 1500 to 1600 nm. Balanced and unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometers fabricated for validation showed extinction ratios larger than 27 and 23 dB, respectively, over a 100 nm bandwidth. Broadband Polarization Beam Splitter Based on A Tapered Mismatched Directional Coupler

Abstract:We design and fabricate a broadband micro polarization beam splitter on SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator) substrate which is compatible with the 180 nm COMS process. The polarization splitter is based on mismatch coupling in which a tapered directional coupler structure with slowly varying waveguide width is used. The device is fabricated in Astar-IME silicon photonics platform. When the waveguide width of the wider port of the tapered waveguide is fixed at 550 nm, by sweeping the taper waveguide length in several waveguide width of the narrower port, the polarization splitter can realize high extinction ratios of the both polarizations in a broad wavelength range. When the waveguide width of the narrow port is 410 nm, the device can split the TE and TM polarizations in a 30 mu m length with the extinction ratios of the both polarizations more than 15 dB over a wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm. The proposed polarization beam splitter is not sensitive to the fabrication error and has large tolerance. The polarization extinction ratios are still more than 10 dB in a wavelength range of 100 nm even if the waveguide width of the taper has a 50 nm fabrication error. Due to its simple structure and high performance, we believe this micro polarization beam splitter will be widely used in photonic integrated circuit, optical signal processing, and optical communication devices.

Abstract:Edge coupler is a key component of silicon-based optoelectronic chips, which dramatically reduces the coupling loss between fibers and transmission waveguides. Here, we propose an ultralow-loss three-step silicon edge coupler based on a 130 nm CMOS process. By replacing the silicon substrate with a material with a lower refractive index than silicon oxide, the silicon leakage loss and polarization-dependent loss can be significantly improved. This structure avoids the existence of a cantilever, which enhances the mechanical strength of the edge coupler. Coupling with standard single-mode fiber, the simulation results demonstrate that the TE/TM mode has an ultralow loss of 0.63/1.08 dB at 1310 nm and 0.57/1.34 dB at 1550 nm, and the 0.5 dB bandwidth covering the entire communication band is about 400 nm. In the entire communication band, the polarization-dependent loss is less than 0.8 dB. Furthermore, we propose a taper shape design method based on mode analysis, which can be adapted for any taper to improve its compactness. Compared with the parabolic shape, the coupling loss of the edge coupler with a length of 460 μm for the TE mode is improved by 0.3 dB on average, this edge coupler provides a feasible solution for fiber-to-chip coupling and is perfectly suitable for wavelength division multiplexing applications in optical communications.

Abstract:CMOS-compatible broad-band and efficient edge couplers are presented in this paper. The couplers are based on SiON ridge waveguides and silicon inverted tapers, no requirement on partially etching in fabrication processes. The measured coupling losses of ~ 2dB are proved with the calculation results, the broad-band range of more than 100nm range.

Abstract:A design of a 1 × 2 multimode 3 dB optical power splitter using tapered couplers is proposed and investigated in this paper. As an example, a 1 × 2 splitter processing five-lowest order transverse-electric-polarized modes is designed and optimized by utilizing finite difference time domain method and particle swarm optimization algorithm. To verify the feasibility of this novel design, the optimized device is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The coupling lengths of tapered couplers are respectively 6.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 3.5 µm, 5.0 µm, 5.0 µm, 7.5 µm, 6.0 µm, 5.0 µm, and 8.0 µm. Measurement results reveal that, for the fabricated splitter, the power uniformity varies from 0.041 to 0.88 dB, the crosstalk ranges from -23.96 to -14.12 dB, and the insertion loss changes from 0.089 to 1.50 dB within a bandwidth from 1520 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:Efficient broadband coupling of light between a dielectric waveguide and a hybrid plasmonic waveguide is investigated theoretically. A plasmonic linear taper is used as a coupler which connects the two types of waveguides. Broadband coupling is realized by such a compact plasmonic taper with a length of only 0.4 microm, which achieves a coupling efficiency of 70% (1.5 dB) at the 1.55 microm telecommunication wavelength.

Abstract:A novel vertically installed planar structure with patterned ground plane had been presented in this paper. It eliminates the existing limitations of conventional vertically installed planar structure, resulting in a simple structure with less fabrication efforts. For demonstration purpose, a 3-dB hybrid coupler was designed based on the proposed improved structure. It was measured to have a good performance both in amplitude and phase from 2.5 to 5.5 GHz.

The working bandwidth can be from 1520 to 1630 nm for both TE and TM polarizations, with an excess loss less than 1 dB. The total size for the fabricated device can be as small as 50 μm, and the measurement results show good agreement with the simulations.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a low-loss fiber-to-chip vertical coupler on the silicon photonic platform by using a 3D two-photon fabrication method. Such a coupler significantly reduces insertion loss, measured to be 1 dB, and provides a wide working wavelength range for both TE and TM polarizations over the entire C-band. Moreover, a large tolerance for misalignment of the coupling fiber, up to 4.5 µm for a 1 dB loss, enables the development of relaxed alignment techniques.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a broadband silicon-based polarization beam splitter (PBS) by using cascaded tapered bent directional couplers (DCs). In our device, the TM-polarized light is efficiently cross coupled to the cross port due to the strong coupling in the DCs, while the TE-polarized light goes through the DC with weak coupling and outputs at the through port. This device can achieve a broad bandwidth performance and support O-, S-, C-, and L-band operations, with acceptable extinction ratios (ERs) and insertion losses (ILs). For both TE and TM polarizations, the simulation results show that ERs are ≥10.1 dB and ILs are ≤1.33 dB in 1280-1600 nm. In the measurement, for the TE polarization, an ER ≥10.94 dB and an IL ≤1.61 dB are obtained in 1280-1360 nm, while an ER ≥11.98 dB and an IL ≤1.39 dB are measured in 1510-1590 nm. For the TM polarization, an ER ≥12.25 dB and an IL ≤2.22 dB are obtained in 1280-1360 nm, while an ER ≥18.93 dB and an IL ≤1.22 dB are measured in 1510-1590 nm.

Abstract:A silicon-on-insulator polarization diversity scheme is proposed. Based on an asymmetrical evanescent coupler, a broadband and compact polarization splitter–rotator comprising mode conversion tapers and mode sorting asymmetric Y junctions is optimized with silicon dioxide upper cladding and a silicon nitride waveguide. The simulation results show mode conversion loss is less than 0.2 dB, and the extinction ratio is lower than − 17 d B in the wavelength range of 1.48 µ m to 1.67 µ m .

Abstract:A novel cyclic mode converter (CMC) based on tapered directional couplers using polymer material is proposed to cope with the differential mode delay and mode-dependent loss in the mode division multiplexing system. The simulation results show that the conversion loss and crosstalk of the proposed device are lower than 0.7dB and -20.47dB in the entire C+L band, respectively.
