Abstract:We propose a subspace-based blind channel estimation method for distributed multi-input single-output systems, where one side of the link constitutes a largely spaced antenna array. The proposed approach, does not necessarily require that the number of receive antennas should be no less than that of transmit antennas and reduces the computational complexity. Sufficient identifiability conditions are established for the distributed channel up to an ambiguity matrix. Simulation results demonstrate the channel estimation performance is influenced by the difference of channel delays for neighboring transmit antennas to the receive antenna, and the increase of difference can result in estimation performance improvement.

Abstract:This paper investigates a detection scheme without channel state information for wireless optical communication (WOC) systems in turbulence induced fading channel. The proposed scheme can effectively diminish the additive noise caused by background radiation and photodetector, as well as the intensity scintillation caused by turbulence. The additive noise can be mitigated significantly using the modified wavelet threshold denoising algorithm, and then, the intensity scintillation can be attenuated by exploiting the temporal correlation of the WOC channel. Moreover, to improve the performance beyond that of the maximum likelihood decision, the maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) criterion is considered. Compared with conventional blind detection algorithm, simulation results show that the proposed detection scheme can improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance about 4.38dB while the bit error rate and scintillation index (SI) are 1×10−6 and 0.02, respectively.

Abstract:This paper provides a new method of blind detection based on Generalized Maximum Likelihood Sequence Detection(GMLSD) in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output(MIMO) Free Space Optical(FSO) systems over weak,moderate and strong atmospheric turbulence channels.The detection scheme in this paper can perform sequence detection taking advantage of the spatial diversity in Equal Gain Combining(EGC) MIMO systems without using any kind of channel knowledge.Furthermore,this paper develops a fast search algorithm which is suboptimal and significantly reduces the computational complexity of sequence processing in receivers.Monte Carlo simulation results show the proposed scheme obtains the spatial diversity in MIMO systems and reaches near optimal detection performance by using medium sequence lengths over different atmospheric turbulence fading models.

Abstract:A detection algorithm based on support vector machine (SVM) is proposed for four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-1) signals in free-space laser communication. Using the power spectral density inversion method, we simulate the atmospheric phase screen. Under the assumption of Taylor frozen flow, we obtain the optical field signal of the laser carrier propagating through the atmospheric turbulent channel. After Gaussian white noises to the signal arc added at the receiving end, the PAM-4 signal is judged by the SVM detection algorithm. SVM detection algorithm is independent on the atmospheric channel. Firstly, SVM detection algorithm groups the received signal data, trains the learning and adjusts the parameters through cross validation of each packet data. Secondly, the optimal hyper-planes between every two adjacent levels can be determined by the cascaded two-level classifications. Lastly, the signal judgment can be made by SVM. The bit error rate (BER) obtained by SVM detection algorithm is better than that of the double-step blind detection, which is comparable to that of the optimal bound detection for weak atmospheric turbulences. It is shown that the SVM detection algorithm has a good performance.

Abstract:With the development of the information age, the transmission rate and transmission capacity of information continue to increase. As a wireless communication method to achieve high bit rate communication, space laser communication plays an increasingly obvious role in global communications. In the current space laser communication system, the optical communication terminal uses a detector to detect the position of the received optical signal, and then the servo mechanism on it performs facula tracking. However, when a four-quadrant detector (4QD) is used to detect optical signal, the received optical signal generally contains three main types of noise, which are background radiation noise, shot noise and thermal noise. These three kinds of noise can be equivalent to Gaussian white noise. In this paper, a single-frequency cosine signal is used to modulate the intensity of the optical signal received by the 4QD, and then the modulated optical signal is detected by a spectrum analysis method based on the cross-correlation algorithm. This method reduces the relative error of the spectral line amplitude when the SNR is -5dB from 2.23% to 0.88%, and reduces the relative error of the spectral line amplitude when the SNR is -20dB from 17.6% to 5.49%. Therefore, this method can well suppress Gaussian white noise and improve the detection accuracy of modulated optical signal under extremely low SNR conditions.

Abstract:Based on the joint Gaussian distribution of optical signal log-amplitude sequence,an algorithm for Maximum a posteriori probability(MAP) detection was proposed to mitigate effects of atmospheric scintillation on the performance of the free-space optical communication.And the bit error rate for the proposed algorithm was simulated.Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm for MAP detection based on the joint Gaussian distribution mitigates effects of atmospheric scintillation on the communication performance and leads to a furthest improvement in detection performance,compared with maximum-likelihood symbol-by-symbol detection and MAP symbol-by-symbol detection.
Channel Estimation and Signal Detection for Optical Wireless Scattering Communication with Inter-symbol Interference

Abstract:A statistical channel model for the non-line of sight (NLOS) optical wireless scattering communication link is fundamental for developing further receiver-side digital signal processing techniques. We adopt a linear time-invariant (LTI) Poisson channel modeling method, which was originally proposed for molecular communication, to model the NLOS optical wireless scattering communication. In such a model, we characterize stochastic inter-symbol interference (ISI) based on a probabilistic delay profile. We derive the first- and second-order statistics for the received signals. Moreover, we propose channel estimation schemes to estimate the delay profile, based on the leastsquares and correlation criteria, and analyze the performance of the proposed channel estimation schemes. Finally, we propose and compare two signal detection schemes, namely the simple linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) receiver treating ISI as noise and the maximum-likelihood sequence detection (MLSD) scheme that takes ISI into account. It is shown that MLSD significantly outperforms LMMSE under channel ISI. The proposed ISI channel model and the associated channel parameter estimation schemes serve as a theoretical foundation for high symbol rate with high transmission power in optical wireless scattering communication.

Abstract:Motivated by recent advances in solid-state incoherent ultraviolet sources and solar blind detectors, we study communication link performance over a range of less than I kin with a bit error rate (BER) below 10(-3) in solar blind non-line-of-sight situation. The widely adopted yet complex single scattering channel model is significantly simplified by means of a closed-form expression for tractable analysis. Path loss is given as a function of transceiver geometry as well as atmospheric scattering and attenuation and is compared with experimental data for model validation. The BER performance of a shot-noise-limited receiver under this channel model is demonstrated. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We propose a novel communication technique which utilizes a set of mutually distinguishable optical patterns instead of convergent facula to transmit information. The communication capacity is increased by exploiting the optical spatial bandwidth resources. An optimum detector for this communication is proposed based on maximum-likelihood decision. The fundamental rule of designing signal spatial pattern is formulated from analysis of the probability of error decision. Finally, we present a typical electro-optical system scheme of the proposed communication.

Abstract:A novel subspace (SS) based blind channel estimation method for multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed in this work. With an appropriate re-modulation on the received signal blocks, the SS method can be effectively applied to the cyclic prefix (CP) based MIMO-OFDM system when the number of the receive antennas is no less than the number of transmit antennas. These features show great compatibility with the coming fourth generation (4G) wireless communication standards as well as most existing single-input single-output (SISO) OFDM standards, thus allow the proposed algorithm to be conveniently integrated into practical applications. Compared with the traditional SS method, the proposed algorithm exhibits many advantages such as robustness to channel order overestimation, capability of guaranteeing the channel identifiability etc. Analytical expressions for the mean-square error (MSE) and the approximated Cramer-Rao bound (ACRB) of the proposed algorithm are derived in closed forms. Various numerical examples are conducted to corroborate the proposed studies.

Abstract:By constant envelope modulation,a new blind algorithm of channel estimation in space-time(ST)-OFDM was proposed using only signal received antenna. An ST-OFDM with two transmit antenna and one receive antenna was founded.By taking advantage of the space-time block coding,a special modulation scheme with constant envelope was designed,which can induce cycle correlation in the system, and lead to estimate the difference sub-channels independently.At last,making use of the CP in OFDM,a blind subspace algorithm was developed to estimate the channels.Constant envelope modulation can avoid the peak power problem in the OFDM,which is inherent to the un-constant modulation.Since no redundant symbols are added in the modulation,the ST-OFDM system can realize the channel identification without decrease of bandwidth efficiency.Moreover,the algorithm is realized by signal received antenna,so the algorithm does not change the structure of ST-OFDM.The algorithm is not sensitive to the channels order overdetermination and is only limited when the channel zeros locate on the subcarrier in the OFDM.

Abstract:Blind detection methods for wireless channels have riveted lots of interests in recent years for their bandwidth efficiency.In this paper,a new algorithm for blind channel detection is proposed.Within a Hidden Markov Model(HMM) framework,the Baum-Welch(BW) algorithm is frequently used to obtain channels' maximum-likelihood(ML) estimation blindly.However,this method assumes the channel model(i.e.,the channel response) to be static throughout the observation sequence,which will incur performance degradation for time-varying(TV) channels.In this paper,based on wavelet approximation and its structure,we modify the BW method and propose a new iterative blind detection algorithm for time-varying wireless channels.The simulation shows that the new wavelet-assisted BW(WABW) algorithm offers better performance than other blind detection algorithms.

Abstract:In order to increase the transmission efficiency,a subspace-based algorithm for blind channel estimation using second-order statistics is proposed in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems.Because the transmission equation of OFDM systems does not exactly have the desired structure to directly derive a subspace algorithm,the algorithm first divides the OFDM signals into three parts,then,by exploiting the redundancy introduced by the cyclic prefix (CP) in OFDM signals,a new equation with Toeplitz channel matrix is derived.Based on the equation,a new blind subspace algorithm is developed.Toeplitz structure eases the derivation of the subspace algorithm and practical computation.Moreover the algorithm does not change the existing OFDM system,is robust to channel order overdetermination,and the channel zero locations.The performances are demonstrated by simulation results.

Abstract:This paper proposes a subspace-based blind channel estimation method using virtual carriers for STBC-OFDM systems with two transmit and two receive antennas. The proposed method can be applied to STBC-OFDM systems with CP or no CP. No CP can achieve lower systems complexity, and potentially lead to higher channel utilization. A few CPs significantly improve the accuracy of the channel estimation. Simulations show that the proposed method obtains accurate channel estimation and fast convergence.

Abstract:A non-coherent blind detection method based on the generalized negative entropy mechanism for chaotic ultra-wideband system is proposed in this paper. In the case without knowing the transmission channel information, the chaotic impulse signals can be detected. The proposed method can overcome the practical application problem existing in the direct chaotic communication (DCC) scheme for impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) communication system. Also, this method can overcome the complicated and unknown multipath channel effect. Analysis of simulation results show that the proposed approach has a good separating and detection performance in the case without knowing the channel information. A new way for the noncoherent blind detection of chaotic UWB system under non-ideal unknown channel. is established.

Abstract:An estimator model for multiple optical signals via a detection matrix is proposed and investigated. In the model, the intensity of the transmitted optical field is modulated by its own unique pseudo-random (PN) sequence and random binary data symbols, and then an estimated algorithm motivated by a signal subspace approach of using the sample matrix of the received signals is obtained under the hypothesis of a synchronous system. The optical channel is modeled using a log-normal distribution for the received signal intensity for low scintillation indexes. With the aid of numerical simulation, it is shown that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be estimated within 90% of the actual SNR after less than 18 frames. Moreover, it is shown that the method requires essentially no information about the propagation-channel characteristics and the amplitudes of signal and noise across the detector matrix.

Abstract:Some blind channel estimation methods for OFDM systems exploring the cyclostationarity embedded in the cyclic prefix have been reported in several papers. Some of these methods can be only applied to short OFDM symbols, but fail for long symbols. Other methods suffer from large amount of computation of cyclic autocorrelation values and are difficult to be used in practical situation. This paper presents a new method of semi-blind channel estimation in which the computation is largely reduced. Simulation result demonstrates that the proposed method performs well for long OFDM symbols and is superior to those reported earlier for several channel model. It is more likely to be used in practice.
