Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel near maximum likelihood detection (MLD) scheme for wireless multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems. The scheme is to reduce the dimension by first using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) detection to fix symbols with high signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR), and then calculate the bit log-likelihood ratio (LLR) for the initial MMSE estimate, construct a list of reliability-based candidate vectors using the corresponding LLR, and return the most likely bit vector among all visited options. Simulation results show that the proposed method can approach identical performance to that of MLD but with a significant reduction in complexity.
Efficient Maximum Likelihood Detection with Imperfect Channel State Information for Interference-limited MIMO Systems

Abstract:Advanced interference-aware detectors are being studied for 3GPP LTE-A to mitigate interference in multi-cell networks. In practical applications, imperfect channel estimates over noisy channels are inevitable. Ignoring them leads to severe performance degradation. The aim of this paper is to investigate a method for an interference-aware maximum likelihood detector to mitigate the impact of channel estimation errors. Simulation results for typical 3GPP LTE/LTE-A show the new method can provide flexibility and ability to deal with the channel estimation errors and to achieve a better trade-off between complexity (e.g., in terms of operations) and performance (e.g., in terms of error rate) in interference-limited scenarios. The proposed lowcomplexity CEN-ML sphere detector can have a gain of more than 5dB than the other investigated detectors for 16-QAM at a target coded block error rate of 0.01.

Abstract:This paper investigates a detection scheme without channel state information for wireless optical communication systems. Employing conventional on-off keying signals, we supposed that conditional probability density function P(r vertical bar 0) is much bigger than P(r vertical bar 0) when r < 0. Under this assumption, the suboptimal maximum likelihood scheme is obtained by utilizing the probability density function without channel information. Theoretical analysis shows the performance of the proposed scheme is close to the maximum likelihood symbol-by-symbol detection. Compared with the maximum likelihood symbol by symbol detection, Monte Carlo simulations show that the performance of the proposed scheme is about 0.62 dB loss for a gamma-gamma channel with a Rytov variance of 1 at the signal-to-noise ratio of 2 dB, but the efficient algorithm makes the real-time implementation of detection based on maximum likelihood feasible. Besides, the experiment is set up under 2 Gbps, and the experimental results match well with that of the theory and simulation. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Based on the joint Gaussian distribution of optical signal log-amplitude sequence,an algorithm for Maximum a posteriori probability(MAP) detection was proposed to mitigate effects of atmospheric scintillation on the performance of the free-space optical communication.And the bit error rate for the proposed algorithm was simulated.Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm for MAP detection based on the joint Gaussian distribution mitigates effects of atmospheric scintillation on the communication performance and leads to a furthest improvement in detection performance,compared with maximum-likelihood symbol-by-symbol detection and MAP symbol-by-symbol detection.

Abstract:This paper provides a new method of blind detection based on Generalized Maximum Likelihood Sequence Detection(GMLSD) in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output(MIMO) Free Space Optical(FSO) systems over weak,moderate and strong atmospheric turbulence channels.The detection scheme in this paper can perform sequence detection taking advantage of the spatial diversity in Equal Gain Combining(EGC) MIMO systems without using any kind of channel knowledge.Furthermore,this paper develops a fast search algorithm which is suboptimal and significantly reduces the computational complexity of sequence processing in receivers.Monte Carlo simulation results show the proposed scheme obtains the spatial diversity in MIMO systems and reaches near optimal detection performance by using medium sequence lengths over different atmospheric turbulence fading models.

Abstract:Focusing on the problem that the detection complexity was high in vertical-Bell labs layered space-time system,a novel simplified maximum likelihood algorithm was proposed.The probability distribution of interference and noise is approximated by the Gaussian distribution.Search region is drastically reduced by changing the number of candidate transmit signal vectors according to transmit antenna number and modulation size.Near optimum performance is obtained with low complexity.Simulation shows that with 4 transmit antennas,16-QAM modulation,the new algorithm's bit error rate is close to the optimum value of the maximum likelihood detection algorithm with 0.016 2 times of its complexity.

Abstract:A suboptimal minimum mean-squared error estimation （MMSE） is proposed for a dispersive wireless channel in the absence of its correlation matrix for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing （MIMO-OFDM） transmission.It utilizes a fast subspace approximation tracking to separate signal subspace with a limited set of channel estimates.The subspace rank is adjusted by pre-set thresholds in different signal-to-noise ratios （SNRs）.The performance comparison among the proposed algorithm,least square based,and the optimal MMSE estimation is shown by numerical simulation under a spatially correlated multi-tap channel scenario.It demonstrates that the approach has better normalized mean square error than recursive least square estimation and yields 3 dB gain over the latter.

Abstract:Due to the extremely large path loss of non-line of sight optical wireless communication, the received signal exhibits the characteristics of discrete photons. In this work we investigate the signal detection and achievable rates of OOK modulation for discrete Poisson multiple access channel (MAC), for both code division multiple access (CDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). For the signal detection, we adopt the maximum likelihood (ML) criterion for the optimal detection, whose complexity grows exponentially with the number of users. Low computational complexity detection is proposed with ℳ-order correction algorithm that can perform closely to ML detection. Moreover, we address the achievable rates and rationalize the power allocation for discrete Poisson MAC for both NOMA and CDMA. Numerical and simulation results are presented to show the performance of the proposed detection, the achievable rate region as well as the optimal power allocation of two-user discrete Poisson NOMA and CDMA.
Channel Estimation and Signal Detection for NLOS Ultraviolet Scattering Communication with Space Division Multiple Access

Abstract:We design a receiver assembling several photomultipliers (PMTs) as an array to increase the field of view (FOV) of the receiver and adapt to multiuser situation over None-line-of-sight (NLOS) ultraviolet (UV) channels. Channel estimation and signal detection have been investigated according to the space division characteristics of the structure. Firstly, we adopt the balanced structure on the pilot matrix, analyze the channel estimation mean square error (MSE), and optimize the structure parameters. Then, with the estimated parameters, an analytical threshold detection rule is proposed as a preliminary work of multiuser detection. The detection rule can be optimized by analyzing the separability of two users based on the Gaussian approximation of Poisson weighted sum. To assess the effect of imperfect estimation, the sensitivity analysis of channel estimation error on two-user signal detection is performed. Moreover, we propose a successive elimination method for on-off keying (OOK) modulated multiuser symbol detection based on the previous threshold detection rule. A closed-form upper bound on the detection error rate is calculated, which turns out to be a good approximation of that of multiuser maximum-likelihood (ML) detection. The proposed successive elimination method is twenty times faster than the ML detection with negligible detection error rate degradation.

Abstract:To overcome the channel fading and burst error in Free-Space Optical(FSO) transmission due to atmospheric turbulence-induced scintillation,a photon-counting based multi-layer interleaved Multiple-Input Single-Output(MISO) iterative detection scheme is proposed. Under the assumption of shot noise limited Poisson channels, an iterative detection algorithm is derived. The system simulations with Repetition Code(RC) and concatenated code in conjunction with the analysis of system performance are illustrated. The numerical results show that the scheme can provide an excellent Bit Error Rate(BER) performance with a relatively low complexity and is easy for hardware to realize.

Abstract:Atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors cause fluctuations in the signal intensity of the free-space optical intensity-modulation/direct-detection link. Additionally, background radiation brings a noisy photocurrent component into the received signal. Using the generalized likelihood ratio test principle, a Viterbi-type trellis-search sequence receiver is proposed, which estimates both the channel gain and the background component and detects the data sequence simultaneously. It has the advantage of a low search complexity that does not depend on the observation window length L, and its error performance approaches that of detection with perfect channel state information and no background radiation, as L becomes large.

Abstract:This article addresses the issue of symbol detection in ambient backscatter communication systems with the multiantenna reader. Focusing on the ON-OFF keying modulation, the optimal detector minimizing the bit error rate (BER) is devised based on the maximum a posteriori principle. We then analyze the exact closed-form BER expression for the optimal detector. Moreover, simple approximate BER expressions are derived in certain asymptotic regimes. Furthermore, a simple energy detector is analyzed as a benchmark scheme, and the asymptotic BER is devised in a closed form. The findings of this article suggest that implementing multiple antennas at the reader is an effective means to enhance the BER performance and extend the tag-reader communication range. Also, the optimal detector always outperforms the energy detector. In particular, the optimal detector can avoid the error floor phenomenon, which is inevitable for the energy detector in the high SNR regime.

Abstract:Space division multiple access (SDMA) is a promising solution for the significant increase of system capacity and spectral efficiency in wireless LANs. To make the system more robust against the detrimental effects of frequency selective fading channels, a combined OFDM/SDMA based WLAN has been previously proposed. In particular, it has been shown that MLD (maximum likelihood detection) has the best SNR performance compared with other detection schemes such as LMMSE and SIC (successive interference cancellation) based ones. However, the complexity of MLD increases exponentially in the number of users and constellation size. In this paper, a new multi-stage low complexity MLD scheme using the sensitive bits algorithm (SB-MLD) is proposed. It is shown that it can greatly reduce the computational complexity with a minimal penalty in performance compared with the exhaustive MLD scheme.

Abstract:Atmospheric turbulence leads to a stochastic process of optical intensity and phase of beam. Thus, errors of departure angle detection are induced. In the paper, a new method to modify of departure angle detection is introduced to Free Space Optical Communications. Based on the phase retrieval, the new method only needs the intensity of the image on the focal plane to calculate the revising phase. The complexity of the algorithm is reduced. The performance and its validity have been simulated in the paper. The results show that the errors of departure angle induced by the atmospheric turbulence become smaller.

Abstract:We develop an efficient hard detector for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, which adaptively combines maximum-likelihood detection (MLD) and minimum-mean-square error with a successive interference canceler together. Unlike the conventional joint combination scheme, which may suffer from considerable degradation in bit-error-rate (BER) performance over correlated channels and where only one data stream is detected by MLD, our proposed scheme adaptively controls the number of data streams to be detected by MLD based on an analytical characterization of reliability for the detection. Simulation results illustrate that near-optimal BER performance can be obtained at much lower computational complexity by the proposed method as compared with existing techniques, regardless of the spatial correlation of the MIMO channels. Abstract:In this paper, the challenging problem of joint channel estimation and data detection for multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems operating in time-frequency dispersive channels under unknown background noise is investigated. Based on two different but equivalent signal models, two expectation-maximization algorithm-based iterative schemes for joint data detection and channel and noise variance estimation are proposed. The first scheme jointly detects data and estimates the channel and noise variance, but the computational complexity is high, owing to the simultaneous detection and estimation for all antennas. To reduce the computational complexity, a complexity-reduced scheme that is detecting data and estimating channel for only one antenna during each iteration and holding the unknown quantities of other antennas to their last values is proposed, whose performance only slightly degrades compared to the first scheme. Moreover, both schemes are derived as closed-form expressions, and therefore, our proposed schemes are free of exhaustive search. Simulation results demonstrate quick convergence of the proposed algorithm, and after convergence, the performance of the proposed algorithm is close to that of the optimal channel estimation and data detection case, which assumes full training and perfect channel state information.

Abstract:In this paper, an order reduction maximum likelihood (OR-ML) algorithm for spatial modulation systems is proposed to reduce the receiver complexity. The proposed algorithm relies on a smaller order neighbourhood constellation which is relative to the conventional mapping constellation, where the active transmitting antenna indices or the possible quadrant transmission symbols locate in is obtained. Simulation results show that the proposed ORML algorithm achieves comparable BER (bit-error-ratio) performance to conventional ML detection at low SNR (signal-noise-ratio).
