Abstract:In an air-to-ground free-space optical communication system, strong background interference seriously affects the beacon detection, which makes it difficult to establish the optical link. In this paper, we propose a correlation beacon detection scheme under strong background interference conditions. As opposed to traditional beacon detection schemes, the beacon is modulated by an m-sequence at the transmitting terminal with a digital differential matched filter (DDMF) array introduced at the receiving end to detect the modulated beacon. This scheme is capable of suppressing both strong interference and noise by correlation reception of the received image sequence. In addition, the DDMF array enables each pixel of the image sensor to have its own DDMF of the same structure to process its received image sequence in parallel, thus it makes fast beacon detection possible. Theoretical analysis and an outdoor experiment have been demonstrated and show that the proposed scheme can realize fast and effective beacon detection under strong background interference conditions. Consequently, the required beacon transmission power can also be reduced dramatically.

Abstract:Ocean observation system that involves multiple underwater vehicles and seafloor nodes plays an important role in better learning the ocean, where underwater wireless communication is mandatory for massive data interaction. Optical communication that has wide bandwidth and comprehensive working distance is the preferred method compared to acoustic and other methods. However, the presence of directionality makes the optical method difficult to use especially when the transceiver is equipped on a motive vehicle. In this study, an underwater free-space optical communication method of transmitting information is proposed. Characteristics of underwater optical transmission, as well as the photoelectric signal processing and modulation and demodulation algorithms, are studied and modeled. New approach for realizing underwater free-space optical communication is proposed and simulated. A prototype including a free-space optical transmitter and a receiver is developed; tests in different scenarios were carried out, and the results were observed: (1) by using the minimum number of LEDs, the effect of uniform lighting in space is achieved, and the transmitter coverage reaches 160°. (2) When the power of the transmitter is 10 W and the communication rate is 1 Mbps, the maximum communication distance reaches 13 m.

Abstract:Performance of the direct-detection coherent receiver array for free-space optical (FSO) communications is evaluated with a full-link simulation model. This FSO full-link model (from the transmitter to the receiver) is established based on the phase screen method and the coupling theory by considering the amplitude fading and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulence. Via full-link simulation, bit error rates are evaluated using maximum ratio combining and equal gain combining algorithms based on single-photodetector direct-detection coherent receiver array with different receiver numbers. The improvement of spatial diversity is numerically demonstrated by comparing with the single receiver.

Abstract:Free space optical communication has been applied in many scenarios because of its security, low cost and high rates. In such scenarios, a tracking system is necessary to ensure an acceptable signal power. Free space optical links were considered unable to support optical mobile communication when nodes are randomly moving at a high speed because existing tracking schemes fail to track the nodes accurately and rapidly. In this paper, we propose a novel tracking system exploiting multiple beacon laser sources. At the receiver, each beacon laser's power is measured to estimate the orientation of the target. Unlike existing schemes which drive servo motors multiple times based on consecutive measurements and feedback, our scheme can directly estimate the next optimal targeting shift for the servo motors based on a single measurement, allowing the tracking system to converge much faster. Closed-form outage probability expression is derived for the optical mobile communication system with ideal tracking, where pointing error and moving statistics are considered. To maintain sufficient average power and reduce the outage probability, the recommended size of a source spot is expressed in closed form as a function of the target's statistics of random moving, providing insights to the system design.

Abstract:We present a quantum-correlation-based free-space optical(FSO) link over 250 m using an outdoor active reflector 125 m from the transceiver station. The performance of free-space optical communication can be significantly degraded by atmospheric turbulence effects, such as beam wander and signal fluctuations. We used a 660 nm tracking laser to reduce atmospheric effects, by analyzing the fast beam wander and slow temporal beam drift, using this information to correct the quantum channel alignment of the 810 nm signal photons. In this work, the active reflector consisted of a mirror, a 6-axis hexapod stage, and a long-range wireless bridge. The slow drift of the beam path due to outdoor temperature changes was steered and controlled using wireless optical feedback between the receiver units and the active reflector. Our work provides useful knowledge for improved control of beam paths in outdoor conditions, which can be developed to ensure high quality quantum information transfer in real-world scenarios, such as an unmanned FSO link for urban quantum communication or retro-reflective quantum communication links.

Abstract:We propose a novel communication technique which utilizes a set of mutually distinguishable optical patterns instead of convergent facula to transmit information. The communication capacity is increased by exploiting the optical spatial bandwidth resources. An optimum detector for this communication is proposed based on maximum-likelihood decision. The fundamental rule of designing signal spatial pattern is formulated from analysis of the probability of error decision. Finally, we present a typical electro-optical system scheme of the proposed communication.

Abstract:Satellite optical communications have high communication speed and good confidentiality, which can establish high-speed and large-capacity communication links between satellites and the ground or other satellites. The requirements for the PAT (pointing, acquisition and tracking) system of satellite optical communication terminals are very high. In satellite optical communications, the biggest influence on the beacon’s recognition and tracking is the background light on CCD (Charge Coupled Device). Therefore, denoising work is required during the recognition or tracking process. This paper uses corner detection method to extract the beacon frame by frame. Mark the spot, and use the optical flow method to calculate the optical flow displacement based on the two consecutive frames. In addition, calculation accuracy of the beacon’s centroid is compared with that of the tradition method. The feasibility is verified by simulation experiment, the tracking process is completed, and the noise can be precisely eliminated.

Abstract:The frequent occurrence of natural disasters and accidents urge a strong demand on a novel localization system for search and rescue. This paper presents a scheme of wireless phone-based detection and localization system. The system can induce the mobile phones to transmit radio frequency signals to outside receiver without victims' activation. Moreover, both time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) approach and signal-strength-of-arrival (SSOA) approach are used for faster and better positioning, and a hand set is designed to help implement SSOA method. Finally, verification measurement in a relatively complicated lab has been conducted to analyze the channel propagation characteristics.

Abstract:Using a beacon in the free space laser communication system is an important method of finishing the acquisition course. The far-field distribution of a beacon affects seriously the acquisition time and acquisition probability. In order to satisfy practical performance requirements, it is necessary to design the far-field distribution of a beacon. First, the impact of a far-field Gaussian distribution beacon on the acquisition course of laser communication is analysed and the far-field uniform beacon has some advantage compared with the far field Gaussian beacon in the case of transmitting beam jitter. One kind of far-field uniform beacon model is developed on the base of combination of semiconductor lasers. The structure of the model is described, the operating principle of model is analysed and the far-field distribution expression of the beam is derived. Experiments data indicate that transmitting power of the model is more than 3.8 W, the degree of non-uniformity is less than 11% and the coupling efficiency is 54%, so the feasibility of the model is proved.

Abstract:The bistatic backscatter is a promising paradigm for the future internet of things network. To tackle the key challenge of strong direct emitter-reader interference, this letter proposes a novel interference cancellation scheme with minimal hardware complexity by exploiting the periodicity of sinusoidal radio frequency (RF) carrier. Based on the interference-free signal, we pursue a detailed investigation on the optimal detector design and characterize its closed-form bit error rate (BER) expression. Also, to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed optimal detector, the popular energy detector is presented to serve as a benchmark. In addition, a simple estimation method is designed to obtain the information of certain parameters required for constructing the thresholds and test statistics. Simulations results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed optimal detector.
Reducing Satellite Interference to Radio Telescopes Using Beacons

Abstract:This paper proposes the transmission of beacon signals to alert potential interferers of an ongoing or impending passive sensing measurement. We focus on the interference from Low-Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites to a radio-telescope. We compare the beacon approach with two versions of Radio Quiet Zones (RQZs): fixed quiet zones on the ground and in the sky, and dynamic quiet zones that vary across satellites. The beacon-assisted approach can potentially exploit channel reciprocity, which accounts for short-term channel variations between the satellite and radio telescope. System considerations associated with beacon design and potential schemes for beacon transmission are discussed. The probability of excessive Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) at the radio telescope (outage probability) and the fraction of active links in the satellite network are used as performance metrics. Numerical simulations compare the performance of the approaches considered, and show that the beacon approach enables more active satellite links relative to quiet zones for a given outage probability.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable beam-shaping system to permit energy-efficient non-line-of-sight (NLOS) free-space optical communication. Light is steered around obstacles blocking the direct communication pathway and reaches a receiver after reflecting off of a diffuse surface. A coherent array optical transmitter (CAO-Tx) is used to spatially shape the wavefront of the light incident on a diffuse surface. Wavefront shaping is used to enhance the amount of diffusely reflected light reaching the optical receiver. Synthetic NLOS experiments for a signal reflected over an angular range of 20° are presented. A record-breaking 30-Gbit/s orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing signal is transmitted over a diffused optical wireless link with a >17-dB gain.

Abstract:We were recently made aware of the fact that Professor Nabeel A. Riza's laboratory theoretically proposed earlier a Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) indoor optical wireless communications arrangement with three-dimensional optical beamforming via a spatial light modulator using diffuse reflections from diffuse optical elements [1]. This is exactly the type of arrangement that would benefit greatly from our technique, since the coherent arrayed optical transmitter (CAO-Tx) we proposed makes the reflection focus onto the receiver, rather than diffusely scatter it in all directions. We apologize for the omission of this prior-art.

Abstract:Optical wireless communication (OWC) has emerged as one promising candidate to mitigate the frequency spectrum crisis. Due to the broadcast nature of OWC channel, physical layer security (PLS) techniques have been considered and explored to improve the transmission confidentiality of OWC links. However, almost all current schemes focus on scenarios including multiple transmitters and fail to match the scenarios with limited transmitters, even single transmitter. For addressing this issue, in this work, the dynamic optical beam based PLS enhancement scheme is proposed. Unlike conventional Lambertian beam based technique paradigm, the above scheme tentatively utilize the commercially available non-Lambertian beam to configure the secure OWC links. Numerical results show that, compared with about 1.10 bps/Hz average secrecy capacity (SC) of the conventional configuration, up to 1.93 bps/Hz average SC gain could be provided by the proposed dynamic beam scheme. Moreover, this potential gain will be increased to about 2.39 bps/Hz when the diversity combing is available for the legitimate user receiver.
