Abstract:Some existing studies have suggested that subcooled boiling on the surface of a heating rod in water induces a vibration of the rod itself. Considering nuclear power generation with light water reactors, latency of this phenomenon in their reactor cores or spent fuel pools should be investigated, because systems of both Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) and Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) allow long fuel rods to heat themselves in water. After the Fukushima Daiichi accident, such investigations especially for the cases of abnormal situations or unexpected severe accidents are being important. A series of studies to accumulate fundamental understandings of this phenomenon, so-called “Subcooled Boiling-Induced Vibration (SBIV)”, has been conducted by the authors through the experiments with a simple system of a single heater rod installed in atmospheric static water. Acceleration of the SBIV of the superheated rod was measured by an accelerometer under the various subcooling conditions, and the degree of subcooling of the water was controlled by electrical power input to the heater rod. The SBIV was investigated to be varied depending on generation, growth, moving, departure and condensation of bubbles due to subcooled boiling on or near the rod surface. The present study clarified that the SBIV of the single rod showed the characteristic power spectrum of its vibration, focusing on influences by metallic walls to confine the water passage for the heater rod, from the point of view of thermal conditions and bubble behaviors near the rod.

Abstract:Vibration of a structure should be avoided to prevent any damage, such as fretting wear occurring between its components, leading to critical failure of the structure. As an industrial example, a fuel assembly in the reactor core of a pressurized water reactor (PWR) is considered as such a structure. A fuel assembly for a PWR, consisting of hundreds of 4-m-long fuel rods, is utilized in the vertical upflow of the coolant water in a reactor core under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. Abnormal situations, such as system pressure drop or loss of coolant flow in the core may lead to unexpected subcooled boiling at the fuel rods, which generate heat due to the nuclear reaction. The behavior of vapor bubbles generated in subcooled boiling can be a cause of fuel rod vibration, i.e., subcooled boiling-induced vibration (SBIV). This paper describes some experiments studying SBIV of a single heater rod in distilled water under atmospheric pressure in order to understand the fundamental phenomena of the SBIV. These experiments focused on the effects of the structural constraints formed by metallic walls around the heater rod on the SBIV of the rod. Three configurations of structural constraints were provided in the experiments−single, parallel, and corner walls−under the thermal conditions of constant heat flux and in a certain range of subcooling degrees. The behavior of the generated vapor bubbles was observed to depend, in each case, on the structural constraints by the walls, which influenced the measured acceleration of the SBIV of the heater rod.

Abstract:The phenomenon that a heating structure vibrates itself due to the behavior of vapor bubbles generated under subcooled boiling has been known as "Subcooled Boiling-induced Vibration (SBIV)". As one of such a heating structure, fuel assemblies for Boiling Water Reactors (BWR) are utilized in subcooled boiling of water, and those for Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR) may face unexpected subcooled boiling conditions in case of sudden drop of the system pressure or loss of water flow, though they are utilized in single phase of water under normal operating conditions. As studies on SBIV, some researchers have conducted demonstrative experiments with a partial array of fuel rods simulating the actual BWR fuel assembly in a flow test loop, which showed no significant influences of the SBIV to degrade the integrity of the fuel rods. In addition, in order to investigate the fundamental phenomenon of the SBIV, pool boiling experiments of the SBIV on a single heater rod were performed in other studies with a simplified apparatus of a water tank in laboratory size under atmospheric pressure. In the experiments, behavior of bubbles generated under various degree of subcooling were observed, and the acceleration of the SBIV of the heater rod was measured. The present study, as a series of the above experiments for the fundamental phenomenon of the SBIV, the two thin walls made of stainless steel were installed in parallel to interleave the heater rod with the gap distance of 1 mm or 3 mm to each of the two walls, which was expected to provide useful results to investigate effects of the parallel walls configuration to the SBIV of the heater rod. The results obtained in the experiments suggested that bubbles growing largely in the gap influenced on the SBIV of the heater rod, with the remarkable behavior such as slide of the large bubbles on the surface of the heater rod towards the open region, interference and coalescence between large bubbles. Abstract:Forced convective subcooled boiling is an effective heat transfer way and used widely in industry. In order to obtain a better understanding of the thermal and hydrodynamic mechanism of the forced convective subcooled nucleate boiling, the characteristics of bubble behaviors of the forced convective nucleate boiling have been studied by many researchers. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted on the bubble behaviors in forced convective subcooled nucleate boiling in an upward annular flow at relatively high subcooling degrees. The images of bubble behaviors during its whole lifetime were captured with high spatial and temporal resolutions by using a high speed video camera and a Cassergrain microscopic lens. The temperature of liquid at the inlet of test section of experimental system was in the range of 50-70℃ at atmosphere pressure, so the subcooling of the forced convective boiling was quite high, above 30K in this study. Some interesting phenomena of the bubble behavior were observed, the bubble shape and behavior were quite different from those of lower subcooling case in forced convective subcooled boiling, the deformation at the bottom of bubble when it is departing and lifting off from the wall was observed, the phenomenon of two consecutive bubbles was also observed, the 2^ bubble grows from the remaining part of the first bubble after it lifts off from the wall.

Abstract:A gas-liquid stratified flow boiling was performed in a 1530 mm long copper tube with an inner diameter of 12 mm under forced convection condition. Four different heat fluxes (q = 15.43 kW/m(2), 18.52 kW/m(2), 21.60 kW/m(2) and 24.69 kW/m(2)) and inlet subcooled temperatures (Delta T-sub =10 degrees C, 15 degrees C, 20 degrees C and 25 degrees C) were applied to investigate the characteristics of flow boiling instabilities, respectively. The results show that the instability features were closely related to the heat flux and inlet subcooling degree. With the increase of heat flux or decrease of inlet subcooling degree, two types of instability oscillation, DWO (density wave oscillation) and PDO (pressure drop oscillation) were identified. Moreover, an additional enhancement of heat transfer coefficient was found when the transition of the oscillation type from DWO to PDO happened. In the meantime, the frequency and amplitude of the PDO type oscillation were also increased with the rise of heat flux or the drop of subcooling. The intensification of fluctuation in PDO, however, has deteriorated the flow boiling heat transfer. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, an experimental investigation on the regulation of gas-liquid stratified flow boiling dynamic instabilities was carried out in a 1530 mm long horizontal arranged copper tube with an inner diameter of 12 mm. Two different thermal boundary conditions, namely (i) heat load distribution, (ii) wall thermal capacity were investigated. Three different heat load distributions (uniform heating, power decrease and power increase) and three kinds of tube with different thickness of graphite casing tubes (bare, 6 mm and 12 mm) were analyzed, respectively. The results showed that the oscillation intensity of gas-liquid stratified flow boiling dynamic instabilities was highly related to occurrence of the onset of nucleating boiling (ONB). In comparison with the based cases, the power increase heat load condition especially that with lower inlet subcooling degree and the case with thicker graphite casing tube had delayed the occurrence of ONB. And finally a suppression of dynamic instabilities was obtained. On the contrary, an early occurrence of ONB and an enhancement of gas-liquid stratified flow boiling instability were obtained for the other two cases. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Influence of Hydrodynamic Interactions among Multiple Bubbles on Convective Heat Transfer in Nucleate Boiling

Abstract:To clear the effects of the hydrodynamic interactions among neighboring vapor bubbles on the saturated pool boiling heat transfer, artificial nucleation sites with several cavity arrangements were manufactured on the substrate surface and measured liquid temperatures near heated substrate by a miniature thermocouple probe with 10 kHz. The surface temperature of heated substrate was measured by an infrared camera with 1 kHz and bubble dynamics were simultaneously visualized by a high-speed video camera with 5 kHz and 10 kHz, respectively. The liquid temperature fluctuations, measured with micro thermocouple 100 mu m and 10 mu m above the substrate surface, were compared among each other and with the transient temperature fields obtained through IR measurements. Results showed that the hydrodynamic interaction among neighboring bubbles causes the liquid convection, that was only detected 100 mu m above the boiling surface. Generally, the degree of liquid temperature fluctuations at 10 mu m height and different arrangements of nucleation sites was under 1 K. Here the superheated sublayer in the vicinity of the boiling surface was generally not affected by the convection. Only when the coalescence from two neighboring nucleation sites occurred and the liquid-vapor interface nearly reached the substrate, a steep temperature drop over 2 K was detected. It was concluded that the viscous sublayer stably exists during boiling of water in lower heat flux conditions. To enhance the convective heat transfer in nucleate boiling, coalesced bubble needs to peel off the viscous sublayer during its deformation. Based on the measurements in this study, this peel-off effect only happens when the coalescence point is less than 1 mm above the heated surface.
Investigation of Rod Vibrations in Droplet Two-Phase Flows

Abstract:Flow-induced vibrations are important problems in nuclear power plants from the view point of reactor safety. In the investigations of these vibrations especially those induced by two-phase flows, a numerical simulation plays a significant role, so it is necessary to obtain the experimental datasets that can validate the results of the numerical simulation. This paper deals with the experimental data of one-end-supported rod vibration, and focuses on the differences between the rod vibrations induced by single-phase air flows and those induced by droplet two-phase flows. In the experiments, the displacement of the non-supported end of the test rod was visualized by the high speed camera with high spatial and temporal resolutions, namely 9.5 μm and 500 μsec. Using an image analyzing software, the rod vibration displacements were measured by the motion tracking method. The curved surface of the rod was observed by another high speed camera and the relationship between the rod vibrations and the wet condition on the surface of the rod was investigated. In addition, the vibrations measured by the strain gages and those by the high speed camera were compared to discuss the differences in these two ways of the measurements.

Abstract:In this study, the transient three-dimensional numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi-interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) with the non-empirical boiling and condensation model have been conducted for isolated boiling bubble behaviour in a subcooled pool. The effects of the wettability on the heating surface for the subcooled bubble departure behaviour were investigated. The numerical results showed in very good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, resulting from the wall heat flux evaluation, it was found that the wall heat flux near the contact line at the bottom of the bubble just before the bubble departing from the heating surface increases with increases of the degree of subcooling.

Abstract:In this study, in order to clarify the heat transfer characteristics of the subcooled pool boiling and to discuss its mechanism, the boiling and condensation model for numerical simulation on subcooled boiling phenomena has been developed. In this paper, the three dimensional numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi-interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) with the boiling and condensation model which consisted of the improved phase-change model and the relaxation time based on the quasi-thermal equilibrium hypothesis have been conducted for the subcooled pool boiling phenomena especially regarding to the bubble departure behavior from the heated surface. The results of the numerical simulations were compared with the experimental data obtained by the high-speed camera (Phantom 7.1) with the Cassegrain optical system, and then the influence of the degree of subcooling for the bubble departing behaviors including their shape changes from the heated surface were numerically predicted. As the results, the numerical results of the bubble departing behavior from the heated surface showed in good agreement with the experimental observations quantitatively.

Abstract:The phenomenon of heat transfer by phase change (liquid/vapor) is used for wall cooling in a number of fields, including power generation, renewable energy and nuclear reactors. This choice is explained by its ability to evacuate high surface heat fluxes at relatively low wall temperatures. In most cases, cooling systems are designed based on steady-state experimental studies. However, during start-up phases or when sudden flow variations occur in cooling systems, surface heat fluxes or wall temperatures may vary considerably from values determined under stationary conditions. Boiling under transient conditions, therefore, reveals a number of peculiarities whose understanding will contribute to fundamental knowledge of this phenomenon. This paper focuses on the numerical study of the transient nucleate pool boiling heat transfer due to the horizontal immersion of a brass ribbon in liquid nitrogen. In addition, the superheat nucleate boiling and the critical heat flux (CHF), which is a critical factor for system safety, has been specifically analyzed. Finally, these numerical results obtained based on a CFD analysis using COMSOL Multiphysics software were compared to experimental data and the percentage error was no more than 13%.

Abstract:An improved wall boiling model with consideration of thin film heat transfer was employed with the Eulerian two-fluid model to investigate the three-dimensional flow boiling characteristics in a fuel assembly with 5 by 5 rod bundle and a vaned grid. Models were validated by using the experimental data for subcooled boiling, post-dryout heat transfer and critical heat flux. The calculated results agreed well with experimental data. Thermohydraulics in the rod bundle were obtained, including temperature, velocity, phasic volume fraction and pressure, based on which, the effects of mixing vane on the localized thermohydraulics were studied. Mixing vane can significantly reduce the cross section averaged vapor fraction and increase the heat transfer capacity due to the swirl effects on two-phase flow; however, it will increase the localized vapor fraction on the heated surface, which may result in the anticipation of boiling crisis, i.e., reach the critical heat flux. Besides, influences of heat flux profile on the flow and heat transfer characteristics were also obtained by comparing two cases with uniform and cosine heat flux distribution along the axial direction. Finally, the impacts of thin film heat transfer on the wall heat partition were investigated, proving that thin film heat transfer played an essential role in the modeling of wall boiling when the vapor fraction at heated surface exceeding 0.25. An Experimental Study on the Effects of Wall Heating on Coherent Structures in a Turbulent Boundary Layer

Abstract:An experimental investigation was conducted for a better understanding of the turbulence behavior and the coherent structure in a turbulent boundary layer over a heated plate, which is horizontal facing upwards. To explore the effects of wall temperature on the turbulent boundary layer behavior, the boundary layer flow was observed at four different temperatures between the plate and inlet flow (δT=0, 15, 30, and 50 K), with the momentum Reynolds number of the inlet flow set to Reθ=1196. We show that based on the comparison of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) distribution between unheated- and heated-wall cases, the wall-heated turbulent boundary layer can be divided into three regions, namely, the near-wall region, the intermediate region, and the outer region. The relationship between the TKE distribution and the coherent structures in each region is explored by comparing the detailed flow-field measurement results for the unheated- and heated-wall cases. In the near-wall region, the decrease in fluid viscosity caused by wall heating has stabilization effects on the turbulent fluctuation. With the increase in wall temperature, the streaky structures display a continuous decrease in their spanwise meandering and an increase in their streamwise coherency. The intermediate region ranges from the logarithmic region to the thermal boundary layer edge. The buoyant force caused by wall heating has a significant effect on the turbulence behavior in this region. Under the influence of buoyant force, the large-scale coherent structures for the wall-heating case were found to contain more kinetic energy and incline away from the wall with a larger angle, which leads to the increased TKE in the intermediate region for the wall-heating case. In the outer region, the occurrence of separated turbulent structures is measurably more common for the wall-heating case. Owing to the shedding of the turbulent structures from the turbulent production source (i.e., large-scale coherent structures originating from the near-wall region), the TKE in the outer region for the wall-heating case is less than that of the unheated case.

Abstract:This paper experimentally investigates the heat transfer and boiling characteristics for the downward facing wall heating since this heating design has been gradually adopted in the industry, especially in the energy and heat transfer fields. The pool boiling and forced boiling cases are considered. These results include temperature/heat flux histories, snapshots of bubble sliding/breakup/coalescence characteristics, relationship of Nusselt (Nu) number vs Rayleigh (Ra) number for the natural convection, and boiling curves in the nucleate boiling regime. Based on the comparisons of heat flux histories and boiling curves, the heat transfer can be enhanced for the forced boiling case due to bubble disturbance by the injection flow. More oscillations in the temperature history and boiling curve are also revealed in the forced boiling case than the pool boiling case. Under the present experimental conditions, appropriate correlations can be derived using the least-square-error regression method. The exponent of fitting curve for the forced boiling is higher than that for the pool boiling, which quantitatively confirms enhancement of heat transfer by the forced boiling under the downward facing heating condition. In addition, the snapshots of boiling characteristics are also provided, clearly revealing the bubble dynamic behaviors. These results are seldom shown in the previous researches.

Abstract:The problem of steady natural convection film boiling about a heated isothermal vertical plate in a porous medium filled with a subcooled liquid is considered. With the boundary layer approximations, similarity solutions are obtained for the buoyancy-induced flow in the vapor and subcooled liquid layers with a distinct interface. At a given vapor Rayleigh number, the Nusselt number is found to be uniquely dependent on the vapor film's dimensionless thickness, which in turn depends on three dimensionless parameters related to the degree of superheating of the wall, the extent of the subcooling of the surrounding liquid, and a property ratio of the vapor and the liquid phases. It is found that the effect of the increase of the subcooling of the surrounding fluid tends to decrease the vapor boundary layer thickness, increase the liquid boundary layer thickness and increase the surface heat flux. On the other hand, the increase of the wall superheating tends to increase the vapor layer thickness, decrease the liquid layer thickness and increase the surface heat flux. Application to boiling heat transfer about a dike intruded into an aquifer is discussed.

Abstract:A visual experiment is conducted to study bubble dimension characteristics during subcooled flow boiling in vertical flow channel with a round heating rod in a squared channel. With the high speed camera, the bubble behavior is captured and bubble dimension characteristics near the heating wall are obtained. In this study, the system pressure is from 0.1 to 1.0 MPa, the mass flux is from 800 to 1900 kg/m2s and the inlet subcooling is from 10 to 30 K. The effect of working conditions on bubble behavior is discussed in detail, such as system pressure, are analyzed in detail. The bubble dimension increases with increasing heat flux, while decreases with system pressure, inlet subcooling and mass flux. In order to predict bubble dimension better, a model is proposed based on important dimensionless numbers in this paper and good agreement is achieved when comparing with the experimental result.

Abstract:The subcooled boiling of liquid nitrogen was numerically simulated by means of computational fluid dynamics(CFD).The different heat transfer modes of surface heat transfer during subcooled boiling were systematically analyzed and the distribution of the three components of wall heat flux along the tube was obtained.The results show that the heat flux transferred by evaporation is the leading mode of surface heat transfer at the final region of subcooled boiling.Meanwhile,the effect of wall heat flux on the partition of the three components was also studied.It indicates that at the outlet of subcooled boiling,the surface quenching heat flux and the turbulent convective heat flux decrease with the increasing of wall heat flux,but only evaporation heat flux increases and its percentage is absolutely dominant.The increase of wall heat flux can effectively promote the boiling heat transfer.

Abstract:He II film boiling is of both academic and applied interests. However, information about He II film boiling is still inadequate and further study is needed from both the technical application and the scientific aspects. In the present study, a thin stainless steel foil heater (10μm thick) is employed to induce boiling in He II. The average heater surface temperature is measured to evaluate the heat transfer performance of He II film boiling under different thermal conditions. And meanwhile, the pressure and the temperature oscillations induced by the film boiling are also measured. It is found that the pressure oscillation and the temperature oscillation highly correlate with each other, which indicates that the vapor bubble is vibrating on the heater surface during film boiling. The heat transfer coefficient of the film boiling depends on both the pressure over the heater surface and the He II bath temperature. The heat transfer coefficients of three kinds of boiling states: noisy film boiling, transition boiling and silent film boiling, are measured in the present study. The visualization of the boiling process is also carried out.

Abstract:With the decreasing of the immersion depth, different kinds of boiling modes appear in the superfluid helium II. A big vapor bubble comparing to the heater size is found to expand and crush on the heater surface accompanied with a loud noise and serve mechanical vibration during noisy film boiling; a stable vapor film is observed on the heater surface without noise and vibration during silent film boiling; and there is transition boiling between noisy and silent film boiling modes. Different kinds of boiling modes are studied by the aid of Schileren visualization method and pressure measurement during boiling.
