Abstract:Combining the merits of non-contact measurement and high sensitivity, the quartz-enhanced photothermal spectroscopy (QEPTS) technique is suitable for measuring acid gases such as hydrogen chloride (HCl). In this invited paper, we report, for the first time, on an ultra-highly sensitive HCl sensor based on the QEPTS technique. A continuous wave, distributed feedback (CW-DFB) fiber-coupled diode laser with emission wavelength of 1.74 μm was used as the excitation source. A certified mixture of 500 ppm HCl:N2 was adapted as the analyte. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy was used to simplify the data processing. The wavelength modulation depth was optimized. The relationships between the second harmonic (2f) amplitude of HCl-QEPTS signal and the laser power as well as HCl concentration were investigated. An Allan variance analysis was performed to prove that this sensor had good stability and high sensitivity. The proposed HCl-QEPTS sensor can achieve a minimum detection limit (MDL) of ~17 parts per billion (ppb) with an integration time of 130 s. Further improvement of such an HCl-QEPTS sensor performance was proposed.

A Spectroscopic Probe for Hypochlorous Acid Detection

Abstract:A spectroscopic probe CMBT was synthesized and characterized. CMBT showed the specific recognition for HClO based on the turn-on blue fluorescence and naked-eye change from pink to colorless. NMR, IR, HRMS-ESI, and spectral analysis suggested that colorimetric and fluorescent change of CMBT to HClO originated from the conversion of CMBT to starting material coumarin-aldehyde 1 caused by the oxidization of HClO, which was responsible for the fluorescence recovery. The detection limit was calculated to be 1.61 mu M and 6.58 mu M for fluorescence and UV-vis analysis with a range up to 1 mM. HClO's fluorescence detection was successfully achieved in tap and river water samples. The prepared convenient paper test strips showed a distinct color change in varying concentrations of HClO. Abstract:Methane (CH 4 ) is a greenhouse gas as well as being flammable and explosive. In this manuscript, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and heterodyne QEPAS (H-QEPAS) exploring a self-designed quartz tuning fork (QTF) with resonance frequency ( f 0 ) of ~8.7 kHz was utilized to achieve sensitive CH 4 detection. Compared with the standard commercial 32.768 kHz QTF, this self-designed QTF with a low f 0 and large prong gap has the merits of large energy accumulation time and low optical noise. The strongest line located at 6057.08 cm −1 in the 2 v 3 overtone band of CH 4 was chosen as the target absorption line. A diode laser with a high output power of > 30 mW was utilized as the excitation source. Acoustic micro-resonators (AmRs) were added to the sensor architecture to amplify the intensity of acoustic waves. Compared to the bare QTF, after the addition of AmRs, a signal enhancement of 149-fold and 165-fold were obtained for QEPAS and H-QEPAS systems, respectively. The corresponding minimum detection limits (MDLs) were 711 ppb and 1.06 ppm for QEPAS and H-QEPAS sensors. Furthermore, based on Allan variance analysis the MDLs can be improved to 19 ppb and 27 ppb correspondingly. Compared to the QEPAS sensor, the H-QEPAS sensor shows significantly shorter measurement timeframes, allowing for measuring the gas concentration quickly while simultaneously obtaining f 0 of QTF.

Abstract:Quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based methane (CH4) detection using a high power continuous wave (CW), single mode diode laser with an emission wavelength at 2.3 μm was demonstrated. A diode laser with a high output power of 6.3 mW and a quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a low resonant frequency of 30.72 kHz were used to improve the CH4-QEPAS sensor performance. A micro-resonator and water vapor acted as a catalyst for improving the relaxation rate of the target gas molecule were added in the CH4-QEPAS sensor for further enhancing the signal level. A minimum detection limit (MDL) of such a CH4-QEPAS sensor reached 7.9 parts per million (ppm). After utilizing wavelet filtering, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was improved by a factor of 3.6 and a lower MDL of 2.2 ppm was achieved. In order to evaluate the long-term stability of such a CH4-QEPAS sensor an Allan deviation analysis was implemented.

Abstract:A quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy sensor system was developed for the sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) using its absorption transitions in the v6 fundamental band at ∼7.73 μm. The recent availability of distributed-feedback quantum cascade lasers provides convenient access to a strong H2O2 absorption line located at 1295.55 cm−1. Sensor calibration was performed by means of a water bubbler that generated titrated average H2O2 vapor concentrations. A minimum detection limit of 12 parts per billion (ppb) corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 4.6 × 10−9 cm−1W/Hz1/2 was achieved with an averaging time of 100 s.

Abstract:An all-optical quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy system (QEPAS) with quadrature point stabilization for trace gas detection was reported. The extrinsic interferometry-based optical fiber Fabry–Perot sensor with quadrature point self-stabilization for detection of quartz prong vibration was used to replace the conventional one. The optimal coefficient of the modulation depth was ∼2.2 theoretically and experimentally, corresponding to the modulation depth of ∼0.1795 cm −1 at an acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) absorption line of 6534.36 cm −1 . Furthermore, the enhancement of QEPAS signal was obtained by using different microresonators. The minimum detectable limit of ∼580 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) was obtained. A normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient for C 2 H 2 of 2.95 × 10 −7 cm −1 ·W·Hz –1/2 was obtained. The detection sensitivity was enhanced by a factor of ∼2.1 in comparison to the conventional QEPAS system. The linear correlation coefficient of the QEPAS signal response to the C 2 H 2 concentration was 0.998 within the range from 10 parts per million by volume (ppmv) to 500 ppmv. Finally, the long-term stability of the QEPAS system was evaluated using Allan deviation analysis, and the ultimate detection limit of ∼130 ppbv was reached for an optimum averaging time of ∼108 s at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature.

Abstract:Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a toxic industrial chemical, necessitating low-level detection capabilities for safety and environmental monitoring. This study introduces a novel approach for detecting hydrogen cyanide (HCN) using a clamp-type custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) integrated with a dual-tube acoustic micro-resonator (AmR) for enhanced photoacoustic gas sensing. The design and optimization of the AmR geometry were guided by theoretical simulation and experimental validation, resulting in a robust on-beam QEPAS (Quartz-Enhanced Photoacoustic Spectroscopy) configuration. To boost the QEPAS sensitivity, an Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) was incorporated, amplifying the laser power by approximately 286 times. Additionally, a transformer-based U-shaped neural network, a machine learning filter, was employed to refine the photoacoustic signal and reduce background noise effectively. This combination yielded a significantly low detection limit for HCN at 0.89 parts per billion (ppb) with a rapid response time of 1 second, marking a substantial advancement in optical gas sensing technologies. Key modifications to the QTF and innovative use of AmR lengths were validated under various experimental conditions, affirming the system's capabilities for real-time, high-sensitivity environmental monitoring and industrial safety applications. This work not only demonstrates significant enhancements in QEPAS but also highlights the potential for further technological advancements in portable gas detection systems.

Abstract:An all-optical double-pass quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor for the detection of acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) at part-per-billion (ppb) levels was developed and experimentally validated. By employing an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) capable of emitting up to 1 W of optical power, a commercial quartz tuning fork (QTF) resonating at 30.7 kHz, and double-pass acoustic microresonators, the amplitude of the QEPAS signal was significantly enhanced, thereby improving the sensitivity of the C 2 H 2 -QEPAS sensor. Instead of using piezoelectric detection in conventional QEPAS, a highly sensitive fiber-optic Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) was employed to measure the vibration of the QTF prong. A working point self-stabilizing technique was exploited to improve the demodulation sensitivity and stability. The linear response of the sensor to laser power and C 2 H 2 concentration confirmed that no saturation occurred. With an excitation laser power of 1 W and a C 2 H 2 absorption line of 1532.83 nm, a C 2 H 2 minimum detection limit (MDL) of 19.1 ppb was achieved, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient (NNEA) of 1.58 × 10 −8 cm −1 ∙W∙Hz −1/2 . Owing to its high sensitivity, long-term stability, and immunity to electromagnetic interferences, the QEPAS sensor provides considerable potential for remote gas sensing in environmental monitoring and other applications.

Abstract:A quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor for H2S detection operating in near-infrared spectral range is reported. The optical source is an erbium-doped fiber amplified laser with watt-level optical power. The QEPAS spectrophone is composed of a quartz tuning fork with a resonance frequency of 7.2 kHz, a quality factor of 8500, and a distance between prongs of 800 μm, and two tubes with a radius of 1.3 mm and a length of 23 mm acting as an organ pipe resonator. With this spectrophone geometry, the photothermal noise contribution of the spectrophone was removed and the theoretical thermal noise level was achieved. The position of both tubes with respect to custom quartz tuning fork has been investigated as a function of signal amplitude, Q-factor, and noise of the QEPAS sensor when a high-power laser was used. Benefit from the linearity of the QEPAS signal to the excitation laser power, a detection sensitivity of 330 ppb for H2S detection was achieved at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, when the laser power was 1.6 W and the signal integration time was set to 300 ms, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption of 3.15 × 10−9 W cm−1/(Hz)1/2. The QEPAS sensor was then validated by measuring H2S in a biogas sample.

Abstract:In this work, we report on the implementation of a multi-quantum cascade laser (QCL) module as an innovative light source for quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensing. The source is composed of three different QCLs coupled with a dichroitic beam combiner module that provides an overlapping collimated beam output for all three QCLs. The 3λ-QCL QEPAS sensor was tested for detection of NO2, SO2, and NH3 in sequence in a laboratory environment. Sensitivities of 19.99 mV/ppm, 19.39 mV/ppm, and 73.99 mV/ppm were reached for NO2, SO2, and NH3 gas detection, respectively, with ultimate detection limits of 9 ppb, 9.3 ppb, and 2.4 ppb for these three gases, respectively, at an integration time of 100 ms. The detection limits were well below the values of typical natural abundance of NO2, SO2, and NH3 in air.

Abstract:In this paper, a differential quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (D-QEPAS) sensor is reported. The differential photoacoustic cell (PAC) was used to generate the photoacoustic effect. Two quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with a quality factor (Q) up to 10 000 were used as the acoustic wave transducers. The signal of D-QEPAS sensor was doubly enhanced by the differential characteristic of differential PAC and resonant response of QTF. The background noise was suppressed based on the differential principle. With the help of the finite element method, the acoustic field characteristics were simulated and calculated. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy technique and second harmonic (2f) detection technique were applied to detect photoacoustic signal. Trace acetylene (C2H2) gas detection was performed to verify the D-QEPAS sensor performance. The 2f signal amplitude of differential mode was 116.03 μV, which had a 1.65 times improvement compared with the 2f signal amplitudes of QTF1. When the integration time was 334 s, the minimum detection limit of D-QEPAS sensor was about 496.7 ppb. The reported D-QEPAS provides a development and idea for the widely reported QEPAS technique.

Abstract:A sensor system for exhaled ammonia (NH3) monitoring exploiting quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) was demonstrated. An erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with an operating frequency band targeting an NH3 absorption line falling at 1531.68 nm and capable to emit up to 3 W of optical power was employed. A custom T-shaped grooved QTF with prong spacing of 1 mm was designed and realized to allow a proper focusing of the high-power optical beam exiting the EDFA between the prongs. The performance of the realized sensor system was optimized in terms of spectrophone parameters, laser power and modulation current, resulting in a NH3 minimum detectable concentration of 14 ppb at 1 s averaging time, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient (NNEA) of 8.15 × 10-9 cm-1 W/√Hz. Continuous measurements of the NH3 level exhaled by 3 healthy volunteers was carried out to demonstrate the potentiality of the developed sensor for breath analysis applications.

Abstract:An innovative and novel quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor for highly sensitive and selective breath gas analysis is introduced. The QEPAS sensor consists of two acoustically coupled micro-resonators (mR) with an off-axis 20 kHz quartz tuning fork (QTF). The complete acoustically coupled mR system is optimized based on finite element simulations and experimentally verified. Due to the very low fabrication costs the QEPAS sensor presents a clear breakthrough in the field of photoacoustic spectroscopy by introducing novel disposable gas chambers in order to avoid cleaning after each test. The QEPAS sensor is pumped resonantly by a nanosecond pulsed single-mode mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (MIR OPO). Spectroscopic measurements of methane and methanol in the 3.1 $\mu$m to 3.7 $\mu$m wavelength region is conducted. Demonstrating a resolution bandwidth of 1 cm$^{-1}$. An Allan deviation analysis shows that the detection limit at optimum integration time for the QEPAS sensor is 32 ppbv@190s for methane and that the background noise is solely due to the thermal noise of the QTF. Spectra of both individual molecules as well as mixtures of molecules were measured and analyzed. The molecules are representative of exhaled breath gasses that are bio-markers for medical diagnostics.

Abstract:Laser spectroscopy based techniques have the advantages of high sensitivities, high selectivities, non-invasiveness and in situ, real-time observations. They are widely used in numerous fields, such as environmental monitoring, life science, medical diagnostics, manned space flight, and planetary exploration. Owing to the merits of low cost, compact volume and strong environment adaptability, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based sensing is an important laser spectroscopy-based method of detecting the trace gas, which was invented in 2002. Detection sensitivity is a key parameter for gas sensors because it determines their real applications. In this paper, focusing on the detection sensitivity, the common methods for QEPAS are summarized. High power laser including amplified diode laser by erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and quantum cascade laser are used to improve the excitation intensity of acoustic wave. The absorption line of gas molecules located at the fundamental bands of mid-infrared region is adopted to increase the laser absorption strength. Micro-resonator is employed to enhance the generated acoustic pressure by forming a standing wave cavity. Quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with low resonant frequency are used to increase the accumulation time of acoustic energy in itself. Multi-pass strategy is utilized to amplify the action length between laser beam and target gas in the prongs of QTF. The advantages and disadvantages of the above methods are discussed respectively. For the issues in real applications, the all-fiber strucure in near-infared region and mid-infrared region and miniaturization using three-dimensional(3D) printing technique for QEPAS sensor are summarized. A QEPAS technique based multi-gas sensor is used to quantify the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and hydrogen chloride (HCl) for post-fire cleanup aboard spacecraft, which is taken for example for the real application.Finally, the methods of further improving the sensitivity of QEPAS sensor are proposed.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor with a fixed wavelength quantum cascade laser (FW-QCL) was demonstrated. The emission wavelength of the FW-QCL at 4.42 μm in the mid-infrared spectral region matched a fundamental CO2 absorption line. Amplitude modulation of the laser intensity was used to match the resonant photoacoustic (PA) cell. The noise from the background was reduced with the correlation demodulation technique. The experimental results showed that the sensor had excellent signal stability and a concentration linear response. When the integration time was 1 s, a 1σ minimum detection limit (MDL) of 2.84 parts per million (ppm) for CO2 detection was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor was evaluated by means of an Allan deviation analysis. With an integration time of ~100 s, the MDL was improved to 1 ppm. This sensor was also used to measure the CO2 concentration from some common emission sources, such as cigarette smoking, automobile exhaust, and the combustion of some carbon-containing materials, which confirmed the stability and robustness of the reported FW-QCL based CO2-PAS sensor system.

Abstract:A quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor capable to detect high concentrations of methane (C1) and ethane (C2) is here reported. The hydrocarbons fingerprint region around 3 µm was exploited using an interband cascade laser (ICL). A standard quartz tuning fork (QTF) coupled with two resonator tubes was used to detect the photoacoustic signal generated by the target molecules. Employing dedicated electronic boards to both control the laser source and collect the QTF signal, a shoe-box sized QEPAS sensor was realized. All the generated mixtures were downstream humidified to remove the influence of water vapor on the target gases. Several natural gas-like samples were generated and subsequently diluted 1:10 in N2. In the concentration ranges under investigation (1%-10% for C1 and 0.1%-1% for C2), both linear and nonlinear responses of the sensor were measured and signal variations due to matrix effects were observed. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was employed as a multivariate statistical tool to accurately determine the concentrations of C1 and C2 in the mixtures, compensating the matrix relaxation effects. The achieved results extend the range of C1 and C2 concentrations detectable by QEPAS technique up to the percent scale.

Abstract:We report on the development of a highly sensitive hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas sensor exploiting the doubly resonant photoacoustic spectroscopy technique and using a near-infrared laser emitting at 1578.128 nm. By targeting the R(4) transition of H 2 S, we achieved a minimum detection limit of 10 part per billion in concentration and a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 8.9×10 −12 W·cm −1 ·Hz −1/2 . A laser-cavity-molecule locking strategy is proposed to enhance the sensor stability for fast measurement when dealing with external disturbances. A comparison among the state-of-the-art H 2 S sensors using various spectroscopic techniques confirmed the record sensitivity achieved in this work.

Abstract:We present a gas sensing system based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) employing a monolithic distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser (QCL) array operated in a pulsed mode as a light source. The array consists of 32 quantum cascade lasers emitting in a spectral range from 1190 cm−1 to 1340 cm−1. The optoacoustic detection module was composed of a custom quartz tuning fork with a prong spacing of 1 mm, coupled with two micro-resonator tubes to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. The QEPAS sensor was validated by detecting the absorption of the P- and R-branches of nitrous oxide. The measurements were performed by switching the array QCLs in sequence while tuning their operating temperature to retrieve the fine structure of the two N2O branches. A sensor calibration was performed, demonstrating a linear responsivity for N2O:N2 concentrations from 1000 down to 200 parts-per-million. With a 10 s lock-in integration time, a detection sensitivity of less than 60 parts-per-billion was achieved permitting the monitoring of nitrous oxide at global atmospheric levels.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) sensor based on differential Helmholtz photoacoustic cell (DHPAC) with dense spot pattern is reported in this paper for the first time. A multi-pass cell based on two concave mirrors was designed to achieve a dense spot pattern, which realized 212 times excitation of incident laser. A finite element analysis was utilized to simulate the sound field distribution and frequency response of the designed DHPAC. An erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) was employed to amplify the output optical power of the laser to achieve strong excitation. In order to assess the designed sensor's performance, an acetylene (C2H2) detection system was established using a near infrared diode laser with a central wavelength 1530.3 nm. According to experimental results, the differential characteristics of DHPAC was verified. Compared to the sensor without dense spot pattern, the photoacoustic signal with dense spot pattern had a 44.73 times improvement. The minimum detection limit (MDL) of the designed C2H2-PAS sensor can be improved to 5 ppb when the average time of the sensor system is 200 s.
