Abstract:Microresonators of ultrahigh quality (Q) factors represent a crucial type of photonic devices aiming at ultra-high spectral resolution, ultra-high sensitivity to the environmental perturbations, and efficient nonlinear wavelength conversions at low threshold pump powers. Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) microdisks of high Q factors are particularly attractive due to its large second-order nonlinear coefficient and strong electro-optic property. In this letter, we break through the long standing bottleneck in achieving the Q factors of LNOI microresonators beyond 108, which approaches the intrinsic material absorption limit of lithium niobate (LN). The ultra-high Q factors give rise to a rich family of nonlinear optical phenomena from optical parametric oscillation (OPO) to harmonics generation with unprecedented characteristics including ultra-low pump threshold, high wavelength conversion efficiency, and ultra-broad operation bandwidth. Specifically, the threshold of OPO is measured to be only 19.6 μW, and the absolute conversion efficiency observed in the second harmonic generation reaches 23%. The record-breaking performances of the on-chip ultra-high Q LNOI microresonators will have profound implication for both photonic research and industry.

Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is a new photonic integrated platform that provides high optical confinement and retains the inherent excellent properties of lithium niobate (LN). Tunable filters are one of the indispensable devices for integrated optics. Here we design and fabricate a thermo-optic (TO) tunable optical filter using two cascaded racetrack microring resonators (MRRs) based on LNOI. The filter shows a narrow and flat top passband with intra band ripple less than 0.3 dB, 3 dB bandwidth of 4.8 GHz and out-of-band rejection of about 35 dB. The insertion loss of the filter is about -14 dB, including grating coupling loss about -6.5 dB and on-chip loss less than -1 dB. The heating power for center wavelength shift of the filter is about 89.4 mW per free spectral range (FSR). Relevant applications of such filters include optical information processing and microwave photonics.

Abstract:A dual-band optical filter based on a single microring resonator embedded with nanoholes is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. A numerical model based on transfer matrix method is utilized to simulate the performance of this device. The coupling between the microring resonator and the Fabry-Pérot resonator formed by nanoholes gives rise to the dual-band optical filtering spectrum. In our experiment, a single microring resonator embedded with nanoholes was fabricated on a commercial 220-nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Good performance was achieved with measured extinction ratio of 9 dB, insertion loss of lower than 1 dB, and quality factor of 11900. Both experimental and simulation results are in good agreement.

Abstract:Difficulty in etching lithium niobate (LN) results in a relatively high propagation loss, which necessitates sophisticated processes to fabricate high-quality factor (Q) microresonators. Here, we fabricate a multimode microring resonator with an intrinsic Q of 6 × 106, which exhibits a propagation loss 50 times lower than that of a single-mode LN microring fabricated under the same process. Notably, the excitation of higher-order modes in the multimode microring is effectively suppressed by utilizing the Euler bend. The highly regular transmission spectrum of the resonator demonstrates a free spectral range (FSR) of 56 GHz. Based on this microresonator, we implement a bandpass microwave photonic filter with an ultra-narrow 3 dB bandwidth of 47.5 MHz and a large tuning range of 2-26.5 GHz. It can be anticipated that the combination of existing advanced etching techniques with this work will drive the propagation loss of a LN waveguide closer to the material absorption loss, significantly facilitating the optimization of performance in applications requiring ultrahigh-Q LN microresonators, such as frequency combs, frequency conversion, electro-optic modulation, and quantum photonics.

High performance fully etched isotropic microring resonators in thin-film lithium niobate on insulator platform

Abstract:We present our design, fabrication, and experimental results for very high-performance isotropic microring resonators with small radii (~ 30 {\mu}m) based on single-mode strip waveguides and transverse magnetic (TM) polarization in a fully etched lithium niobate (Z-cut) thin-film on insulator. The loss of the devices is predicted to be < 10 dB/cm, and is measured to be ~ 7 dB/cm. The measured optical responses of microring resonators exhibit an extinction of ~ 25 dB (close to critical coupling), a 3 dB optical bandwidth of 49 pm (~ 6 GHz) for all-pass structures, an extinction of ~ 10 dB for add-drop structures, and a free spectral range of ~ 5.26 nm, all of which are in excellent agreement with the design. This work is the first step towards ultra-compact and fully isotropic optical modulators in thin-film lithium niobate on insulator.

Abstract:An ultra-compact silicon bandpass filter with wide bandwidth tunability is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The filter architecture is based on a multiple micro-ring resonator-cascaded structure. A wide bandwidth tunability (from 75 to 300 GHz) can be achieved by controlling the resonant frequency of the microring resonators when a good shape factor (0.24-0.44) is held. The filter has a wide free spectral range (about 1.2 THz). The center wavelength can be tuned over several nanometers linearly. The footprint is only 0.053 mm(2). (C) 2016 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Microring resonators are critical photonic components used in filtering, sensing and nonlinear applications. To date, the development of high performance microring resonators in LNOI has been limited by the sidewall angle, roughness and etch depth of fabricated rib waveguides. We present large free spectral range microring resonators patterned via electron beam lithography in high-index contrast Z-cut LNOI. Our microring resonators achieve an FSR greater than 5 nm for ring radius of 30 μm and a large 3 dB resonance bandwidth. We demonstrate 3 pm/V electro-optic tuning of a 70 μm-radius ring. This work will enable efficient on-chip filtering in LNOI and precede future, more complex, microring resonator networks and nonlinear field enhancement applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate ultra-high Q factor microring resonators close to the intrinsic material absorption limit on lithium niobate on insulator. The microrings are fabricated on pristine lithium niobate (LN) thin film wafer thinned from LN bulk via chemo-mechanical etching without ion slicing and ion etching. A record-high Q factor up to times ten to the power of 8th at the wavelength of 1550 nm is achieved because of the ultra-smooth interface of the microrings and the absence of ion induced lattice damage, indicating an ultra-low waveguide propagation loss of about 0.28 dB per meter. The ultra-high Q microrings will pave the way for integrated quantum light source, frequency comb generation, and nonlinear optical processes.

Abstract:Abstract A bandwidth-tunable optical filter is fabricated by combining Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and microring resonator. Both bandwidth red-shift and blue-shift are observed in the experiment. The bandwidth can be tuned from 0.46 to 3.09 nm by controlling two phase shifters. The device also shows an extinction ratio higher than 25 dB. Potential applications are integrated optical signal processing such as reconfigurable filtering and channel selecting in wavelength division multiplexer.

Abstract:To meet the requirement of radio frequency signal processing tasks among various frequency bands, here we have demonstrated a reconfigurable microwave photonic bandpass filter by flipping the optical notch spectrum of a cascaded microring resonator (MRR) filter pool chip through phase modulation. We experimentally characterize the cascaded MRR filter pool chip on the Si3N4 platform and evaluate the system performance of the established microwave photonic filter (MPF). In the demonstrated microwave photonic filter system, the center frequency can be tuned within 5.8--18.2 GHz and the bandwidth can be tuned within 2.1--3.5 GHz. In particular, the MPF system features a response with a shape factor of ∼2.2. With the advantages of reconfigurability and good shape factor, the demonstrated reconfigurable RF bandpass filter shows a potential application in future software-defined RF frontends.

Abstract:We propose a high-order microring filter structure based on the Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) platform for flattening filtering. This filter structure can achieve a box-like spectral response with large free-spectral-range (FSR) and high out-of-band extinction ratio (ER), which can be widely used in various fields, especially in the wavelength division multiplexing. The filter consists of two or more rings which are connected in series, with Ti electrodes added on them for thermal tuning. According to the proposed requirements of spectral bandwidth and FSR, the physical dimensions of the high-order microring filter structure can be calculated based on theoretical formulas, and we optimize them for better performance. The relationship of the coupling coefficients of each coupling zone is calculated based on the Butterworth spectral responses. Result shows that the higher-order filter has steeper rise-fall edges and a flatter top, and can be designed to achieve a larger FSR. The FSR of the fourth-order microring filter can be designed to 78.4 nm, with ER of 12.6 dB, and the insertion loss of 1.1 dB. The fluctuations at the top of the box-like spectra caused by the fabrication deviations can be compensated by applying voltages to Ti electrodes, which can change the effective refractive index of the waveguide.

Abstract:Two ultra-compact silicon bandpass filters are proposed and partly experimentally presented. Both of them have wide bandwidth tunability. Based on the first filter (filter-I), the second filter (filter-II) was designed and has large Free Spectrum Range (FSR). Two filters share the same architecture (matrix architecture), consisting two groups of micro-ring resonator-cascade structures (simply called as micro-ring resonator in this letter). Using this matrix architecture, a wide bandwidth tunability from 75 to 300 GHz can be achieved in filter-I. Based on matrix architecture, double micro-ring resonator (MRR) were adopted and Vernier effect was used in design. It is showed both in simulation and experiment that the FSR of filter-II exceeded 35 nm (around 40 nm in simulation), which is much larger than the FSR of single MRR. Filter-II’s tunability of center wavelength in simulation covers most wavelength from 1530 to 1570 nm. The comparison of bandwidth tunability between filter-I and II reveals that adding paths in matrix architecture may be more effective than adopting high-order micro-ring resonators.

Abstract:The high-order microring filter has been proposed for a larger free spectral range (FSR) compared with the single microring filter; therefore, it has great potential to be used in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. In this article, we have designed and fabricated a second-order microring filter made up of two rings connected in series with two Ti thermal heaters deposited above them. The large FSR of 56.8 nm is obtained by decreasing the difference of the radii between the two series rings, achieving similar FSRs to that of higher-order filters but with a simpler and more compact design. The average electrical tuning efficiencies of the two heaters are 0.186 nm/mW and 0.207 nm/mW, and the center wavelength of the filter can be tuned over the entire FSR with an applied electrical power of less than 40 mW.
Surface acoustic microwave photonic filters on etchless lithium niobate integrated platform

Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator emerges as a promising platform for integrated microwave photonics because of its capability of ultralow-loss guidance and high-efficiency modulation of light. Chip-level integration of microwave filters is important for signal processing in the 5G/6G wireless communication. Here, we employed the principle of bound states in the continuum for low-loss waveguiding on an etchless lithium niobate integrated platform, and realized high-performance microwave photonic filters thereon. These microwave photonic filters consist of a high-quality photonic microcavity modulated by piezoelectrically excited surface acoustic waves. Acoustic time delays from 21 to 106 ns and passbands with bandwidth as narrow as 0.89 MHz were achieved in the fabricated filters operating at gigahertz frequencies. Our demonstration may open up new applications on the lithium niobate integrated platform, such as optical communication, signal processing, and beam steering.

Abstract:A novel and simple bandwidth and wavelength-tunable optical bandpass filter based on silicon microrings in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure is proposed and demonstrated.
