Abstract:Two freeform surfaces provide more degrees of freedom in designing illumination optics and can yield a better solution. The existing methods for point-like sources are mostly valid in designing one freeform surface. Designing two freeform surfaces for point-like sources still remains a challenging issue. In this Letter, we develop a general formulation of designing two freeform lens surfaces for point-like sources. The proposed method is very robust in designing freeform lenses with two elaborately designed surfaces. The examples clearly show that using two freeform surfaces yields better solutions to challenging illumination problems with ultra-high energy efficiency.

Abstract:High-performance image-forming systems often require high system complexity due to the overdetermined nature of optical aberration correction. What we present here is a novel computational imaging modality which can achieve high-performance imaging using a simple non-image-forming optical system. The presented optical system contains an aspherical non-imaging lens which is designed with the optimal transfer of light radiation between an object and a detector. All spatial frequencies of the object collected by the non-imaging lens are delivered to the detector. No image is formed on the detector, and a full-path optical diffraction calculation method is developed to recover a high-quality image of the object from multiple intensity measurements. The effectiveness and high performance of the proposed imaging modality is verified by the examples.

Abstract:Imaging systems consisting of flat phase element such as diffractive optical element, holographic optical element, and metasurface have important applications in many fields. However, there is still a lack of generalized and efficient design methods of these systems, especially for systems with nonsymmetric configurations. We proposed a design method of imaging system consisting of flat phase elements based on confocal properties. The description of the generalized phase function for realizing point-to-point stigmatic imaging is derived. Given the focal length or magnification as well as the locations of the elements based on the design requirements, the phase functions can be calculated very fast and stigmatic imaging of the central field is realized. The systems can be taken as good starting points for further optimization, during which the rotationally symmetric or freeform phase terms can be added. Several design examples are demonstrated to validate the feasibility of the method. The proposed method increases design efficiency while decreasing the dependence on existing systems and skills significantly, and can be easily integrated into optical design software.

Abstract:The automated design of imaging systems involving no or minimal human effort has always been the expectation of scientists, researchers and optical engineers. In addition, it is challenging to choose an appropriate starting point for an optical system design. In this paper, we present a novel design framework based on a point-by-point design process that can automatically obtain high-performance freeform systems. This framework only requires a combination of planes as the input based on the configuration requirements or the prior knowledge of designers. This point-by-point design framework is different from the decades-long tradition of optimizing surface coefficients. Compared with the traditional design method, whereby the selection of the starting point and the optimization process are independent of each other and require extensive amount of human effort, there are no obvious differences between these two processes in our design framework, and the entire design process is mostly automated. This automated design process significantly reduces the amount of human effort required and does not rely on advanced design skills and experience. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed design framework, we successfully designed two high-performance systems as examples. This point-by-point design framework opens up new possibilities for automated optical design and can be used to develop automated optical design in the areas of remote sensing, telescopy, microscopy, spectroscopy, virtual reality and augmented reality.
A Design Method of the Distortionless Catadioptric Panoramic Imaging Based on Freeform Surface

Abstract:A design method for the distortionless catadioptric panoramic imaging system is proposed in this paper. The panoramic system mainly consists of two parts, a reflecting surface system with relay lens and a CCD camera. A mapping relationship between the real image plane and the projection surface is established to acquires low distorted imaging features easily. And the design of freeform surface is applied to the reflecting surfaces to correct distortion. After iteratively optimize the freeform surfaces, the image quality is gradually improved. The simulation results show that compared with traditional system, the new freeform surface system has simple design, attaining higher performance and has the advantage of small scene distortion and making the image more suitable and convenient for observing.

Abstract:Freeform optics constitutes a new technology that is currently driving substantial changes in illumination design. It liberates designers and engineers from restrictions of optical surface geometry, enabling them to achieve compact, lightweight, and efficient illumination systems with excellent optical performance. Freeform optics is currently used widely for both fundamental research and practical applications. This Review focuses on the design of freeform illumination optics, which is a key factor in advancing the development of illumination engineering. The design methods of freeform illumination optics can be divided into two groups: zero-etendue algorithms based on ideal source assumption and design algorithms for extended light sources. The zero-etendue algorithms include ray mapping method, Monge-Ampere equation method, and supporting quadric method. The algorithms for extended sources include illumination optimization, feedback design, and simultaneous multiple surfaces method. The characteristics and limitations of these design methods are illustrated and a summary of these methods with future outlooks is also given.

Abstract:Designing freeform optics for illuminating hard-to-reach areas is a challenging and rewarding issue. The current designs of freeform illumination optics are mostly valid in the applications in which the region of interest is easily accessible. What we present here is a general formulation of designing freeform lenses for illuminating hard-to-reach areas. In this method, the freeform lens consists of two elaborately designed surfaces, by which both the intensity distribution and wave-front of the light beam are manipulated in a desired manner. The light beam after refraction by the freeform lens is further guided through a light-guiding system to produce a prescribed illumination on a target plane which is inaccessible. The properties of the light-guiding system are taken into account in the tailoring of the freeform lens profiles to guarantee the prescribed illumination on the target plane. Two examples are presented to demonstrate the elegance of this method in designing freeform optics for illuminating hard-to-reach areas. Abstract:This paper introduces a novel endoscope design based on the panoramic annular staring imaging technology. This design utilizes a single optical system to realize both panoramic observation and local high resolution on a single sensor. The freeform surface is employed to improve the image quality and reduce system volume. The design results based on the commercial optical design software package ZEMAX, indicate that this optical system is able to acquire an excellent image quality with a modulation transfer function above 0.6. Compared with the traditional ones, this novel endoscope design with wide FOV is likely to decrease the diagnostic time dramatically and improve the lesion detect rate considerably.

Abstract:Using a freeform optical surface can effectively reduce the imaging system weight and volume while maintaining good performance and advanced system specifications. But it is still very difficult for traditional freeform surface design when ultra-small system volume or ultra-few elements are required. Considering the images generated by the system can be recovered by digital image processing, in this paper, we proposed a design method of compact and simplified off-axis freeform imaging systems using optical-digital joint design process, which fully integrates the design of a geometric freeform system and the image recovery neural network. This design method works for off-axis nonsymmetric system structure and multiple freeform surfaces with complicated surface expression. The overall design framework, ray tracing, image simulation and recovery, and loss function establishment are demonstrated. We use two design examples to show the feasibility and effect of the framework. One is a freeform three-mirror system with a much smaller volume than a traditional freeform three-mirror reference design. The other is a freeform two-mirror system whose element number is reduced compared with the three-mirror system. Ultra-compact and/or simplified freeform system structure as well as good output recovered images can be realized.

Abstract:In this Letter, we present a novel design method of image-side telecentric freeform imaging systems. The freeform surfaces in the system can be generated using a point-by-point design approach starting from an initial system consisting of simple planes. The proposed method considers both the desired object-image relationships and the telecentricity at the image-side during the design process. The system generated by this method can be taken as a good starting point for further optimization. To demonstrate the benefit and feasibility of our method, we design two freeform off-axis three-mirror image-side telecentric imaging systems in the visible band. The systems operate at F/1.9 with a 30 mm entrance pupil diameter and 5 degrees diagonal field-of-view. The modulation-transfer-function curves are above 0.69 at 100 lps/mm.

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a general direct design method for three-dimensional freeform surfaces and freeform imaging systems based on a construction-iteration process. In the preliminary surfaces-construction process, the coordinates as well as the surface normals of the data points on the multiple freeform surfaces can be calculated directly considering the rays of multiple fields and different pupil coordinates. Then, an iterative process is employed to significantly improve the image quality or achieve a better mapping relationship of the light rays. Three iteration types which are normal iteration, negative feedback and successive approximation are given. The proposed construction-iteration method is applied in the design of an easy aligned, low F-number off-axis three-mirror system. The primary and tertiary mirrors can be fabricated on a single substrate and form a single element in the final system. The secondary mirror is simply a plane mirror. With this configuration, the alignment difficulty of a freeform system can be greatly reduced. After the preliminary surfaces-construction stage, the freeform surfaces in the optical system can be generated directly from an initial planar system. Then, with the iterative process, the average RMS spot diameter decreased by 75.4% compared with the system before iterations, and the maximum absolute distortion decreased by 94.2%. After further optimization with optical design software, good image quality which is closed to diffraction-limited is achieved. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, a novel method is proposed to design the freeform off-axis reflective imaging systems. A special algorithm is demonstrated to calculate the data points on the unknown freeform surface using the rays from multiple fields and different pupil coordinates. These points are used to construct the multiple three-dimensional freeform surfaces in an imaging system which works for a certain object size and a certain width of light beam. An unobscured design with freeform surfaces can be obtained directly with this method, and it can be taken as a good starting point for further optimization. The benefit of this design method is demonstrated by designing a freeform off-axis three-mirror imaging system with high performance and system specifications. The final system operates at F/1.49 with a 64mm entrance pupil diameter and an 8° × 9° field-of-view (FOV). The performance of the system is diffraction limited at LWIR (long-wavelength-infrared).

Abstract:In this Letter,we propose a novel configuration and design method of freeform,dual fields-of-view(FOVs),dual focal lengths,off-axis three-mirror zoom imaging systems.The switch of the two zooms is achieved by rotating a single mirror element.The design of a freeform,dual focal lengths zoom system is realized by a point-by-point design approach for the first time to our knowledge.This method enables the direct design of freeform surfaces from initial planes using given system specifications and configuration,and the designed system can be taken as a good starting point for further optimization.A freeform,dual FOVs,dual focal lengths,off-axis three-mirror zoom system is demonstrated.The F-numbers of the two zooms are 2 and 2.4.The dual FOVs are 3°×3°and2.5°×2.5°.After final optimization,both of the zooms achieve high performances.

Abstract:In this paper, mixed-surface-type optical system is defined as the optical system comprised of various types of surfaces, including spherical, aspheric, and freeform surfaces. A general point-by-point design method for mixed-surface-type systems is proposed. In detail, methods for spherical system design and optical power assignment are proposed during the point-by-point design process. Additionally, three surface evolutions are proposed: from spherical to aspheric surfaces and freeform surfaces, and from aspheric surfaces to freeform surfaces. A mixed-surface-type off-axis three-mirror system is designed as an example and as a starting point for further optimization. The sphere receives most of the system optical power while the freeform surface has little power, which can reduce system fabrication difficulty. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, a design method based on a construction and iteration process is proposed for designing freeform imaging systems with linear field-of-view (FOV). The surface contours of the desired freeform surfaces in the tangential plane are firstly designed to control the tangential rays of multiple field angles and different pupil coordinates. Then, the image quality is improved with an iterative process. The design result can be taken as a good starting point for further optimization. A freeform off-axis scanning system is designed as an example of the proposed method. The convergence ability of the construction and iteration process to design a freeform system from initial planes is validated. The MTF of the design result is close to the diffraction limit and the scanning error is less than 1 mu m. This result proves that good image quality and scanning linearity were achieved. Abstract:The method of designing a freeform lens which can image on a formula describable non-planar surface with low distortion was proposed aimed on distortion correction. In this method, the Snell's law and the correspondence between the coordinates of object and the distortion free image are used to establish the partial differential equation which characterizes the freeform surface, and the partial differential equation can be solved to form the freeform surface. Take projection on spherical surface for example, a freeform lens is designed. After adding this lens to the ordinary projection lens at a certain position, the system (ordinary projection lens and freeform lens) can project an image on sphere with absolute distortion about 2mm for an observer at half of the projection distance, and the MTF on sphere is analyzed in detail after.

Abstract:Freeform liquid-crystal polarization imaging optics (LPIOs) have vast potential for application in next-generation interactive displays like augmented reality and virtual reality. However, tailoring the phase profile of a freeform LPIO for flexible aberration correction and diffraction efficiency control is still a big challenge due to the difficulties arising from the non-zero etendue of an imaging system and the finite bandwidth of LPIOs. Here, a practical approach to creating freeform LPIOs from design to fabrication is proposed. A freeform polarization exposure is developed to produce a flexible, precise, and ultra-high-resolution photoalignment pattern for a freeform LPIO. A cooperative optimization is performed between the freeform LPIO and the freeform polarization exposure system to find the optimal phase of the freeform LPIO and the optimal surface profiles of the freeform lenses employed in the exposure system to produce freeform wavefronts. The optimal phase of the freeform LPIO is then achieved by superposition interference of the engineered freeform wavefronts via freeform polarization exposure. The effectiveness of the approach and the advantages of freeform LPIOs is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed approach will significantly promote the widespread applications of freeform LPIOs in the field of optics and photonics. A practical approach to creating freeform LPIOs with flexible aberration correction and diffraction efficiency control from design to fabrication is proposed. Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated the design method of freeform unobscured reflective imaging systems using the point-by-point Construction-Iteration (CI) method. Compared with other point-by-point design methods, the light rays of multiple fields and different pupil coordinates are employed in the design. The whole design process starts from a simple initial system consisting of decentered and tilted planes. In the preliminary surfaces-construction stage, the coordinates as well as the surface normals of the feature data points on each freeform surface can be calculated point-by-point directly based on the given object-image relationships. Then, the freeform surfaces are generated through a novel surface fitting method considering both the coordinates and surface normals of the data points. Next, an iterative process is employed to significantly improve the image quality. In this way, an unobscured design with freeform surfaces can be obtained directly, and it can be taken as a good starting point for further optimization. The benefit and feasibility of this design method is demonstrated by two design examples of high-performance freeform unobscured imaging systems. Both two systems have good imaging performance after final design.

Abstract:Reflective imaging systems form an important part of photonic devices such as spectrometers, telescopes, augmented and virtual reality headsets or lithography platforms. Reflective optics provide unparalleled spectral performance and can be used to reduce overall volume and weight. So far, most reflective designs have focused on two or three reflections, while four-reflection freeform designs can deliver a higher light throughput (faster F-number) as well as a larger field-of-view (FOV). However, advanced optical design strategies for four-reflection freeform systems have been rarely reported in literature. This is due to the increased complexity in solution space but also the fact that additional mirrors hinder a cost-effective realization (manufacture, alignment, etc.). Recently, we have proposed a novel design method to directly calculate the freeform surface coefficients while merely knowing the mirror positions and tilts. Consequently, this method allows laymen with basic optical design knowledge to calculate 'first time right' freeform imaging systems in a matter of minutes. This contrasts with most common freeform design processes, which requires considerable experience, intuition or guesswork. Firstly, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for a four-mirror high-throughput telescope with 250mm-focal-length, F/2.5 and a wide rectangular FOV of 8.5° x 25.5°. In a subsequent step, we propose an effective three-mirror but four-reflection imaging system, which consists of two freeform mirrors and one double-reflection spherical mirror. Compared with common three-mirror and three-reflection imagers, our novel multi-reflection system shows unprecedented possibilities for an economic implementation while drastically reducing the overall volume.
