Abstract:The relationship between entrepreneurs and capital was the subject of my research over the last 30 years. In 1984, I published a paper about entrepreneurs. Later, I co-authored the book Entrepreneurs: The Kings of Economic Growth with Sheng Bin. I have never left the theme set in that paper and that book.

Abstract:Based on the relation-oriented context of China, social capital plays significant role in daily life. This article provides comprehensive literature review not only about entrepreneurial decision-making, social capital, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy but also the relationship among them. On the base of the detailed theory, this article introduces entrepreneurial self-efficacy as medium between entrepreneurial decision-making and social capital which offers a new perspective for researchers. In the end the future direction is suggested to deepen the concepts and construct systematic framework.

Abstract:With privately owned high-technology and newly established enterprises as the research objects,it expounds the rationalization of using the network theory on the base of reviewing the previous research on entrepreneurship and in the combination of analyzing the Chinese culture and the transition socioeconomic background. Then it presents a conceptual framework of the interactive mechanism for relational network and entrepreneurship,and discusses it in detail by explaining the value of network in the different stage of entrepreneur and the evolution law of entrepreneurial network. Finally it probes into the problem of how to construct and manage the entrepreneurial network at the levels of entrepreneur,government and society.

Abstract:Based on Nahapiet and Ghoshal's three dimension of social capital including the structural, the relational and the cognitive([1]), this study examined the relationship between social caoital and organizational effectiveness and the interrelations among the three dimensions in the context of high-tech industries. The moderating effects of entrepreneurial orientation were investigated further. A survey was conducted of 148 high-tech ventures, results from structural equation modeling suggest that structural capital and relational capital only have one effect on non-financial or financial performance, while cognitive capital has both two, and the three dimensions of social capital have a complicated interrelation among themselves. Results from multiple regressions indicated the, moderating effects of entrepreneurial orientation only exist in some given conditions. Implications and future research directions are proposed.

Abstract:The paper discussed some key issues about entrepreneurial leadership in recent years,such as theoretical backgrounds,theoretical construct,the comparison with other leadership,current and future researches.The main conclusions are that(1) The studies of entrepreneurial leadership are shifted from the static,horizontal,macro level to the dynamic,vertical,micro level;(2) The performance mechanism of entrepreneurial leadership will be emphasized in future studies;(3) Both questionnaire studies and interview studies are needed;(4) Entrepreneurship and strategic management will be integrated.

Abstract:This paper,employing provincial panel data during the period of 1998—2013 in China,examines the influence of entrepreneurship on economic growth by introducing the entrepreneurship variable.The estimated result shows that entrepreneurship has significantly positive effect on economic growth.However,further instrumental variables estimation and robustness analysis reveal that,although the positive effect is causal,that above is,increase of entrepreneurship rate promotes economic growth,comparing to the driving effect on economic growth of capital accumulation,the impact of entrepreneurship on economic growth is still relatively limited.To make the entrepreneurship an inexhaustible source of the future economic growth,the governments need to both encourage mass entrepreneurship and guide the tight combination of entrepreneurship and capital accumulation in order to fully develop their cooperative effect on economic growth.

Abstract:It has been increasingly recognized that entrepreneurship plays a crucial role in successful economies. The Schumpeterian approach to growth (Aghion and Howitt, 1997) advances the view that entrepreneurial dynamism is the key to innovation and growth. A growing body of policy work emphasizes the important role of entrepreneurs in economic development (World Bank, 2003). Yet, research on entrepreneurship in economics is rather limited. There are three distinct perspectives on entrepreneurship in social sciences. The first perspective focuses on the role of economic, political, and legal institutions in fostering or restricting entrepreneurship. Institutional problems are seen in credit constraints that make it impossible to borrow and set up businesses; insecurity of property rights that provides insufficient incentives for entrepreneurs; and regulatory burdens that make setting up new enterprises difficult. The second perspective focuses on the sociological variables shaping entrepreneurship. For example, sociologists study the role of values and social networks in promoting or discouraging entrepreneurial activities. Social networks may work through a variety of channels, such as family, friends, or ethnic groups. The third perspective emphasizes individual characteristics of entrepreneurs. Psychologists have studied the traits associated with entrepreneurship - such as a personal need for achievement, belief in the effect of personal effort on outcomes, attitudes towards risk, and individual self-confidence. Although there are studies on each perspective, little work looks at each of these factors taking the other into account. This is precisely what we do in this paper, using a new data set of Chinese entrepreneurs and a matching sample of non-entrepreneurs with similar age, gender and educational characteristics. The survey covers both entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs in order to understand how they differ in individual characteristics, family background, social networks, values and beliefs, and perceptions of the institutional environment. Abstract:In this paper, we argue that the economic miracle of China in the past three decades can be attributed to the reallocation of entrepreneurial talent from the government/state and agricultural sectors to business activities. This change is unprecedented in the past two thousand years of Chinese history. When entrepreneurial talent was moved more to business activities, it created wealth, and the economy boomed. Three dominant groups of entrepreneurs are identified: (1) Peasants-turned entrepreneurs, (2) officials-turned entrepreneurs, and (3) overseas-returned, and engineers-turned, entrepreneurs. They have emerged sequentially, and successively led three decades of economic growth. The success of the Chinese economy arises from a gradual replacement of position-based rights with property-based rights that has triggered this reallocation of entrepreneurial talent. We also argue that when position-based and property-based rights coexist, value-creating and rent-seeking can be complementary. Therefore, one should not be puzzled by the coexistence of rapid economic growth and pervasive corruption in China. In order to improve the efficiency of allocation of entrepreneurial talent and efforts, it is important to further reduce the domain of position-based rights, and build a better-defined and more effectively-protected property rights system.

Abstract:With the development of internationalization both in theory and reality,attention is being directed to the issues concerning the role of entrepreneurs in the internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).The researches on this subject,however,are somewhat lacking a focus.Based on the study of internationalization of SMEs with such factors as entrepreneurship and the social capital of entrepreneurs,it can be found that the innovativeness,risk-taking and proactive spirit in entrepreneurship are the driving force to the internationalization of SMEs.And in between the entrepreneurship and the internationalization of SMEs,there exist such social capital as the structural,relational and cognitive dimensions,all playing a bridging role.

Abstract:Empowering State Capitalism in China: The Revival, Legitimizationand Development of Private EnterprisesbyZongshi ChenDoctor of Philosophy in SociologyUniversity of California, BerkeleyProfessor Thomas Gold, ChairMy research explores the interplay between the state and market in the formation of the market, and how this in turn leads to the transformation or reproduction of such structures. This is a historical examination of the revival of private enterprise in China since the late 1970s against the contemporary hostile political environment and of the current development of private enterprise. It explores three main issues: (1) how private enterprise, and generally the market economy, a political taboo under Mao's regime, became legitimized; (2) how the state transformed in response to the development of private enterprise; (3) how private enterprise performed under such market institutions.My findings suggest that Wenzhou's marginal position in socialist economy, culture and administration enabled Wenzhou to become the first place for experimenting with private enterprise. The findings imply that marginalized areas had great potential for engendering new institutions; this advances the theory of institutional change. My archival study also shows that three categories of people were the earliest to engage in private enterprise: those who had some work experience in a collective or state entity;those who had done business individually elsewhere; and some cadres.The findings of my project reject the prevalent decentralization model in explaining China's institutional transition and lend partial support to the factional struggle theory. The findings suggest that the alliance between the local market model and central market-oriented leaders enhanced the legitimization of private economy. My findings also show that intellectual framing, which was rarely examined about China's transition, enhanced the gradual transition of institutional logic, the establishment of market institutions and, finally, market hegemony. In response to the development of private enterprise in the past three decades, Wenzhou transformed from a laissez faire state into a regulatory state, and then into an interventionist state. The findings reject a static view of state-society relations and advocate for an interactive approach to examining China's transition. This study also shows that institutional isomorphism drove the convergence of developmental models among four coastal cities and suggests an empowering state capitalism in these regions.The analysis of the nation-wide survey indicate that an entrepreneur's political connection is crucial for an enterprise's performance in both areas, and it contributed more to the performance of coastal enterprises than to that of inland enterprises. This gap may imply a stronger state intervention in the market on the coast than that in the inland and demonstrate the development of private enterprise may empower a strong state capitalism.

Abstract:In available research literature,researchers focused on the functions of influences of firm social capital,while ignored the question of how it formed.On the base of related researches in sociology,this paper explored the question of the formation of entrepreneur social capital(ESC),a special and important individual social capital related with firm social capital closely,on the review of human capital.In this paper,ESC was defined and measured by two dimensions,the social network embedded and the capability of access the social resource.After analyzed the influences of age,education background,function background and gender on these two dimensions and their differences,we tested the hypothesis with the panel data of Chinese listed companies.
A Study on Determinants of Entrepreneurial Variations in the Context of Transforming Economy of China

Abstract:The main objective of this paper is to explain why the rate of entrepreneurship is different across different regions in China.Using panel data model across 29 provinces of mainland China between 1996 and 2006,the authors find that human capital,unemployment,private wealth have significant impacts on new firm formation across different regions.Market demand change also is the important factor to influence entrepreneurship,but it produces the impact mainly by income growth.And the study has separately examined the determinants of entrepreneurial variations for two different stages from 1996 to 2001 and from 2002 to 2006.The authors further find that human capital and income growth are the significant influences on entrepreneurship in two stages,however,population change,industrial structure change,unemployment and private wealth don't produce significant impacts until in the second stage.

Abstract:Since Schumpteter put forward the concept of entrepreneurship, the research of entrepreneurship became the foci in the theoretical and practical fields because of advances in its body of empirical knowledge, and became a potentially promising field of scholarly inquiry. Corporate entrepreneurship has been recognized as a viable means for promoting and sustaining corporate competitiveness, this article will elaborate the constructs ,forms, tactics and effectiveness of corporate entrepreneurship ,moreover suggest the trends of research based on past relevance researches.
