Abstract:Since the concept of social capital was introduced into academic research,it has been looked on more and more favorably by scholars in the fields of sociology,economics and management because of its strong interpretative capability.In recent years,research into the relationship between firm social capital and performance has attracted considerable attention,and entrepreneur social capital and entrepreneur social networks have also often been mentioned in the literature.Although the empirical research of social capital has made a huge contribution,research on the definition,mobilization and effect of entrepreneur social capital are still of great value,especially those based on samples of Chinese listed companies and controlling for entrepreneur demographic variables.We defined entrepreneur social capital by two dimensions:the characteristics of the social networks in which entrepreneurs are embedded;and their capability to mobilize social resources from the social resource view in social capital theory.In the empirical research,entrepreneur social capital was measured by four indices:vertical social networks, horizontal social networks,political identity,and the reputation of board chairman.The empirical analysis presented here is based on a sample of 332 Chinese listed companies in the manufacturing industry and showed that vertical social networks and the political identity of entrepreneurs had significant negative effects on short-term firm performance,which was consistent with previous empirical findings.This was due to the fact that the great improvement of the market economy in China has weakened the dependence of firms on the government.The hypothesis that horizontal social networks are positively related to firm performance was not supported by the research findings,while the reputation of entrepreneurs had significant positive effects on firm performance,especially on the quality of performance. The relationship between the demographic characteristics of entrepreneurs and firm performance was significantly positive. Further contributions and limitations were also discussed.
