Abstract:Herein, we present a facile synthesis of hierarchical carbon frameworks with microporous skeletons and interconnected meso/macropores by employing poly(vinylidene chloride-co-methyl acrylate)-b-polystyrene copolymers as precursors. The obtained porosity can be tuned over a broad range via well-selected block proportions of the precursor, enabling its advantageous applications in target-oriented energy storage systems.

Abstract:Organic-based energy storage devices are of great interests due to their high potential as affordable, high-performance energy storage devices. Especially, all-organic energy storage devices, where cathode and anode are constituted of organic compounds, could be an extremely affordable device expected to be applied to smart grids. Recent reports on bipolar porous polymeric frameworks (BPPFs) suggest very promising features of this new organic electrode group towards high-performance energy storage devices. Here, we studied an all-organic system using BPPFs for both anode and cathode parts. The formation of BPPFs was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and N2 isotherm measurements. The electrochemical properties of this all-organic energy storage device using BPPFs showed a high-power density of 1 kW kg−1 based on the total mass of the BPPFs and a long cycle life of over 1000 times.

Abstract:Polymer Electrolytes In article number 2203413, Chang Yun Son, Moon Jeong Park, and co-workers establish a platform for innovative electrolyte technologies to achieve superionic conduction from solid-state polymer electrolytes. Through the rational design of bifunctional polymers capable of unique intra-monomer hydrogen bonding, interconnected rod-like ion channels are formed in the glassy polymer matrix, which enables a high ionic conductivity of 10−3 S cm−1 and high storage modulus of ca. 100 MPa at 25 °C.

Abstract:Porous crystalline conjugated macrocyclic materials (CMMs) possess high porosity, tunable structure/function and efficient charge transport ability owing to their planar macrocyclic conjugated pi-electron system, which make them promising candidates for applications in energy storage. In this review, we thoroughly summarize the timely development of porous crystalline CMMs in energy storage related fields. Specifically, we summarize and discuss their structures and properties. In addition, their energy storage applications, such as lithium ion batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, sodium ion batteries, potassium ion batteries, Li-CO2 batteries, Li-O2 batteries, Zn-air batteries, supercapacitors and triboelectric nanogenerators, are also discussed. Finally, we present the existing challenges and future prospects. We hope this review will inspire the development of advanced energy storage materials based on porous crystalline CMMs. This review provides a summary on the recent progress of porous crystalline conjugated macrocyclic materials in energy storage applications.

Abstract:The bio-nanotechnological fabrication of high-surface-area carbons has attracted widespread interest in supercapacitor applications by using readily-available natural products as raw materials or bio-templates, and is expected to refine on pore accessibility for compact energy storage. Here, a renovated de-sign strategy of semi-biomass interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) derived carbon is demonstrated through physically knitting the biomacromolecule (sodium alginate, SA) polymeric chains into the highly crosslinked resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) network and subsequent thermochemical conversion. Molecule-level interlacing forces in such IPN efficiently relieve the RF skeleton shrinkage when producing carbon, while the other SA network addresses the macrophase separation issue to sacrifice as an in-knitted poro-gen and a morphology-directing agent. As a result, porous carbon globules are equipped with moss-like surfaces and interconnected pore architecture for high accessible electrode surface (1013 m2/g), and ef-ficient electrochemical responses are reached with the specific capacitance of 312 F/g at 1 A/g. Taking the advantage of 9 mol/kg NaClO4 complex-solvent electrolyte, the voltage window is extended to 2.4 V, endowing the two-electrode device with the high energy delivery of 32.3 Wh/kg at 240 W/kg.

Abstract:Efforts and challenges when synthesizing, characterizing and testing conjugated porous polymers (CPPs) in fields related to energy storage, conversion and production are reviewed from the author's perspective. The current state-of-the-art of such materials from synthesis and morphological control to applications that encompass gas and energy storage, catalysis and hydrogen production is reviewed. Contrary to classical pi-conjugated polymers, special emphasis is given to the morphological aspects of CPPs and the control of surface area, porosity and pore volume and the implications of those properties in the aforementioned applications.

Abstract:Due to the energy requirements for various human activities, and the need for a substantial change in the energy matrix, it is important to research and design new materials that allow the availability of appropriate technologies. In this sense, together with proposals that advocate a reduction in the conversion, storage, and feeding of clean energies, such as fuel cells and electrochemical capacitors energy consumption, there is an approach that is based on the development of better applications for and batteries. An alternative to commonly used inorganic materials is conducting polymers (CP). Strategies based on the formation of composite materials and nanostructures allow outstanding performances in electrochemical energy storage devices such as those mentioned. Particularly, the nanostructuring of CP stands out because, in the last two decades, there has been an important evolution in the design of various types of nanostructures, with a strong focus on their synergistic combination with other types of materials. This bibliographic compilation reviews state of the art in this area, with a special focus on how nanostructured CP would contribute to the search for new materials for the development of energy storage devices, based mainly on the morphology they present and on their versatility to be combined with other materials, which allows notable improvements in aspects such as reduction in ionic diffusion trajectories and electronic transport, optimization of spaces for ion penetration, a greater number of electrochemically active sites and better stability in charge/discharge cycles.

Abstract:Multifunctional three-dimensional (3-D) nano-architectures, integrating all device components within tens of nanometers, offer great promise for next generation electrical energy storage applications, but have remained challenging to achieve. The lack of appropriate synthesis methods, enabling precise 3-D spatial control at the nanoscale, remains a key issue holding back the development of such intricate architectures. Here we present an approach to such systems based on the bottom-up synthesis of penta-continuous nanohybrid monoliths with four functional components integrated in a triblock terpolymer derived core-shell double gyroid architecture. Two distinct 3 D interpenetrating networks serving as cathode and current collector are separated from a carbon anode matrix by continuous, ultrathin polymer electrolyte shells. All periodically ordered domains are less than 20 nm in their layer dimensions and integrated throughout the macroscopic monolith. Initial electrochemical measurements with the Li-ion/S system exhibit reversible battery-like charge-discharge characteristics with orders of magnitude decreases in footprint area over conventional flat thin layer designs.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are important members of crystalline porous materials due to their huge structural diversity and tunability. By hybridizing MOFs or COFs with other materials, restrictions of the pristine materials, i.e., poor conductivity and weak mechanical property, can be effectively circumvented. This review summarizes several hybridization techniques from the molecular level to the micro‐ and macroscales for the preparation of various MOF and COF hybrids. Then, their representative applications as electrochemical energy storage devices are elaborated, such as rechargeable batteries, supercapacitors, polymer electrolytes, and separators. The basic principles and mechanisms for guiding hybridization are also properly clarified.

Abstract:The demand for practical and cost‐effective environmental treatment and energy storage materials is exploding. Porous polymeric and carbonaceous materials have attracted tremendous interest on account of their well‐developed porosity and tunable surface chemistry. Functionalization of pore structures further enhances their properties for environmental treatment and energy storage. Herein, the procedures for functionalization of porous structures are introduced, including predesign and postsynthetic strategies. Subsequently, the important advancements of emerging porous polymers for environmental treatment in sorption (e.g., organic micropollutant adsorption, heavy metal ion removal, radionuclide extraction, and oil absorption) and membrane separation (e.g., aqueous micropollutant separation, organic solvent nanofiltration, desalination and pervaporation), as well as for energy storage ranging from the electrodes and separators of batteries to supercapacitor electrodes are highlighted. Moreover, given the combined merits of high intrinsic conductivity, porosity, and physicochemical stability, novel polymer‐based porous carbons for energy storage are also highlighted. Key functionalization chemistry for each application is discussed and an in‐depth understanding of the structure–property relationships of these functional porous materials is provided. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of emerging functional porous polymeric and carbonaceous materials for environmental treatment and energy storage are proposed.

Abstract:A new generation of porous polymers was made for various energy-related applications, e.g., as fuel cell membranes, as electrode materials for batteries, for gas storage, partly from renewable resources. This review intends to catch this emerging field by reporting on a variety of different approaches to make high performing polymers porous. This includes template techniques, polymers with inherent microporosity, polymer frameworks by ionothermal polymerization, and the polymerization of carbon from appropriate precursors and by hydrothermal polymerization. In this process, we try to not only identify the current status of the field, but also point to open question and tasks to identify the potentially relevant progress.

Abstract:A gradient copolymer, poly(styrene-co-vinylbenzyl), was synthesized and used to construct a porous conductive framework on carbon fabric (Cporous@CF). Compared with the pristine CF, Cporous@CF exhibited a smaller average pore size (from greater than 10 to 1–2 μm), a greatly expanded surface area (from 2.2 to 55 m2 g–1), an improved connection between carbon fibers, and better electronic conduction. The prepared Cporous@CF was tested as a conductive host for the cathode active material in lithium–polysulfide batteries. The cell constructed with Cporous@CF had a higher capacity (>1000 mAh g–1 at 0.1–0.5C) and better rate capability compared to that constructed with pristine CF. The primary causes of the improved electrochemical performance of the Cporous@CF cell are discussed and clarified through cyclic voltammetry and the method of the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique.

Abstract:Covalent organic framework (COFs) and conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) adopt rigid structure directing motifs as building blocks, which are connected by covalent bonds in a specific polymerization reaction with crystalline and amorphous morphology, respectively. They usually possess high specific surface area, controllable porous structure, as well as physical and chemical stability. Due to the diversity of organic monomers and organic reactions, COFs and CMPs can be synthesized by designing suitable monomers and organic polymerization reactions for specific applications. In recent years, COFs and CMPs as functional materials have received extensive attention, and great progress have been made in electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this review, we systematically sorted out the design principles of COFs and CMPs as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and supercapacitors (SC) electrode materials, as well as water-splitting electrocatalysts. Subsequently, the latest advances in COFs and CMPs for energy storage and conversion systems were introduced from the perspective of synthesis strategies. Finally, we put forward the outlook and prospects of COFs and CMPs for LIBs, supercapacitors, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with high-efficiency.

Abstract:Conducting polymer hydrogels are emerging as a promising class of polymeric materials for various technological applications, especially for energy storage devices due to their unique combination of advantageous features of conventional polymers and organic conductors. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional synthesis, new synthetic routes in which acid molecules are adopted as both crosslinkers and dopants have been developed for conducting polymer hydrogels with unique 3D hierarchical porous nanostructures, resulting in high electrical conductivity, large surface area, structural tunability and hierarchical porosity for rapid mass/charge transport. The newly developed conducting polymer hydrogels exhibit high performance when applied as active electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors or as functional binder materials for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. This feature article summarizes the synthesis of conducting polymer hydrogels, presents their applications in energy storage, and discusses further opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:Polymer-based dielectrics exhibit promising applications in energy storage devices due to their enormous power density, good flexibility, and low cost. However, the low energy storage density remains to be the bottleneck. Here, sandwiched polymer-ceramic nanocomposite films are designed by stacking the PVDF middle layer incorporated Ag-decorated BaTiO3 (BT) ceramic nanoparticles ( NPs) and the PVDF top/bottom layers embedded 2D layered MXene nanosheets. Interestingly, the optimal performances with a reversible energy storage density (Wre) as high as ∼ 22.3 J/cm3 with an efficiency η ∼ 77% at a low electric field of 270 MV/m are achieved for the film with 5 wt% @BT/PVDF middle layer. Strong interfacial coupling, ionic interaction, and enhanced breakdown strength due to the Coulomb blocking effect in the hierarchical structures with different fillers are responsible for the high energy storage performance. Moreover, the phase-field simulation further proved an appropriate amount of @BT NPs can effectively prevent the formation of the conductive network, inhibit the dielectric loss and improve the breakdown strength. This hierarchical strategy demonstrates an applicable route for fabricating polymer nanocomposites with high performance.
