Abstract:ABSTRACT: Since the demand for effective and sustainable energy solutions has been on the rise, the field of energy storage has made tremendous strides. Due to their special mix of features, polymer nanocomposites—materials made of polymers and nano-scale fillers have become intriguing materials for energy storage applications. The most current advancements in polymer nanocomposites for energy storage applications are presented in detail in this review study. The work starts with an overview of the fundamental ideas and difficulties surrounding energy storage, then it explores the synthesis and characterization methods employed to create polymer nanocomposites. The many types of nano-fillers used in polymer nanocomposites are then described, including conductive polymers, metal oxides, and carbon-based nano-materials. The main factors influencing how well polymer nanocomposites store energy, such as charge storage capability, conductivity, and cycle stability, are carefully explored. The paper also explores how polymer nanocomposites are used in flexible energy storage systems, lithium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors, among other types of energy storage technology. The impact of interface engineering, morphology, and nanofiller loading on the general effectiveness of polymer nanocomposites is underlined. Additionally, scalability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact of polymer nanocomposites for energy storage applications are reviewed, along with their problems and potential for the future. A thorough grasp of the most recent developments in polymer nanocomposites for energy storage applications is the goal of this study, which will make it easier to design and create the next generation of energy storage devices with improved performance and sustainability.

Abstract:Modern energy storage technologies are an active area of research because of their increasing demand in electronic gadgets, automotive, and electric vehicle applications. Supercapacitors and batteries substantially meet such needs due to their internal surface area, high surface-to-volume ratio, as well as high energy density and mobility of the two-dimensional (2D) materials. As a result, 2D materials—particularly MXene, comprised of carbide nitride and corresponding combinations—are ideal options for energy storage devices and applications. The present review focuses on MXene and corresponding composites—especially polymer-based. We also provide an overview of MXene and polymer harnessing methods, as well as corresponding, e.g., electrical and mechanical features. The use of MXene and polymeric materials in batteries and supercapacitors—as well as upcoming difficulties and results—are all covered in the context of energy storage applications.

Abstract:Transition to renewable and sustainable energy from fossil fuels (natural gas, coal, and oil) has dominated the research cycle. The shift is as a result of increasing population growth, industrialisation, decreasing oil reserves and hazardous environmental impact of energy generation from fossil fuels. The new methods of energy generation demand functional materials that are smart and strong for generation and storage of energy. Polymeric composite materials have been widely used. With the recent material performance demand, there is a need to improve the properties of the composite. The improvement can be achieved by reinforcing with fibres and/or nanoparticles as the matrix alone does not possess the required properties. The influence of incorporating fibres and/or fillers into the polymeric matrix has been largely reported in many studies. Recent advancement in the development and use of polymeric composites and nanocomposites is discussed for energy applications. The discussion includes material property improvements, processing methods and improving interface adhesion that may arise when compounding the materials. Various areas, in the energy sector where these materials, can be used are equally highlighted.

Abstract:Polymeric materials especially nanocomposites (Graphene, MXene based) are widely used in food, electronics, biomedical, batteries, energy storage, fuel cells, wastewater treatment, and automotive. Nanocomposites are stronger, lighter, and stiffer and can improve properties such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, thermal stability, flame retardancy, surface appearance, optical clarity and chemical resistance. Current research is focusing on nanocomposites applications, CO2 capturing polymers, making polymers degradable especially developing bio composites and green compositeswhich are degradable, use of deep eutectic solvents for biomass pretreatment to manufacture bio composites or green composites and polymeric composites as drilling fluids and their use in developing ceramics and to construct sequence-controlled and complex topological structures through control of polymerization methodologies.

Abstract:Due to the energy requirements for various human activities, and the need for a substantial change in the energy matrix, it is important to research and design new materials that allow the availability of appropriate technologies. In this sense, together with proposals that advocate a reduction in the conversion, storage, and feeding of clean energies, such as fuel cells and electrochemical capacitors energy consumption, there is an approach that is based on the development of better applications for and batteries. An alternative to commonly used inorganic materials is conducting polymers (CP). Strategies based on the formation of composite materials and nanostructures allow outstanding performances in electrochemical energy storage devices such as those mentioned. Particularly, the nanostructuring of CP stands out because, in the last two decades, there has been an important evolution in the design of various types of nanostructures, with a strong focus on their synergistic combination with other types of materials. This bibliographic compilation reviews state of the art in this area, with a special focus on how nanostructured CP would contribute to the search for new materials for the development of energy storage devices, based mainly on the morphology they present and on their versatility to be combined with other materials, which allows notable improvements in aspects such as reduction in ionic diffusion trajectories and electronic transport, optimization of spaces for ion penetration, a greater number of electrochemically active sites and better stability in charge/discharge cycles.

Abstract:This study explores the domain of developing material categories for the purpose of sustainable energy storage, with the objective of addressing the constraints inherent in existing technologies and facilitating the development of inventive resolutions. The research examines the potential of nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), polymers, and two-dimensional (2D) materials as a means to overcome the obstacles presented by current energy storage systems. This study investigates the qualities and potential of various materials, examining them in conjunction with a range of thorough characterization techniques. These approaches include electrochemical analysis, structural methodologies, nanoscale observations, and computer modelling. In the next analysis, this study will examine the future direction of research on energy storage materials, including prospective advancements and the critical obstacles related to scalability, cost-efficiency, and integration within energy systems. In general, this investigation highlights the significant impact of new materials on the development of a more environmentally friendly energy infrastructure. The present study focuses on the investigation of emerging materials for sustainable energy storage. Specifically, the research explores the potential of nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, polymers, and two-dimensional materials in this context. By examining the properties and characteristics of these materials, this study aims to contribute to the understanding and development of efficient and environmentally friendly energy storage solutions.

Abstract:Riding on the rapid growth in electric vehicles and the stationary energy storage market, high‐energy‐density lithium‐ion batteries and next‐generation rechargeable batteries (i.e., advanced batteries) have been long‐accepted as essential building blocks for future technology reaching the specific energy density of 400 Wh kg−1 at the cell‐level. Such progress, mainly driven by the emerging electrode materials or electrolytes, necessitates the development of polymeric materials with advanced functionalities in the battery to address new challenges. Therefore, it is urgently required to understand the basic chemistry and essential research directions in polymeric materials and establish a library for the polymeric materials that enables the development of advanced batteries. Herein, based on indispensable polymeric materials in advanced high‐energy‐density lithium‐ion, lithium‐sulfur, lithium metal, and dual‐ion battery chemistry, the key research directions of polymeric materials for achieving high‐energy‐density and safety are summarized and design strategies for further improving performance are examined. Abstract:The properties and applications of conducting polymers for energy storage have been thoroughly reviewed. Current challenges in their potential applications for advancing energy storage systems have been highlighted. The industrial and academic sectors have been closely observing the advantages of conventional polymers, primarily due to their easy preparation and low manufacturing costs. Recently, there has been a growing interest in conducting polymers (CPs) due to their unique characteristics. These polymers offer improved environmental durability, impressive mechanical and optical potential, ease of manufacturability, and a range of electrical properties compared to conventional inorganic materials. This review focuses on the chemical structures, properties, and synthesis of the most prevalent types of CPs. Furthermore, an analysis of conducting composites is conducted to evaluate their performance in energy storage devices. The review specifically focuses on the growth of their operations in energy storage technologies such as Lithium ion batteries, fuel cells, and supercapacitors (SCs). It also explores the current challenges faced by CPs potential applications for advancing energy storage systems. This review aims to advance understanding of the role of CPs for energy storage applications. In summary, conductive polymers offer a wide range of applications due to their unique features and suitable production techniques for energy storage system (ESS) application. However, there is still significant work to be carried out to enhance the performance of conduction polymers for ESSs. This overview has provided an introduction to traditional conductive polymers as functional materials, including information on their polymerization processes, advantages, disadvantages and the most promising ESS applications to date, such as various batteries and supercapacitors. It is worth noting that conductive polymers hold the potential to become crucial components in future ESSs. Achieving this potential will require further advancements in synthesis techniques, integration with other materials, as well as maximization and optimization of their capabilities.

Abstract:Solar photoelectric energy converted into electricity requires large surface areas with incident light and flexible materials to capture these light emissions. Currently, sunlight rays are converted to electrical energy using silicon polymeric material with efficiency up to 22%. The majority of the energy is lost during conversion due to an energy gap between sunlight photons and polymer energy transformation. This energy conversion also depends on the morphology of present polymeric materials. Therefore, it is very important to construct mechanisms of highest energy occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO)s and the lowest energy unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO)s to increase the efficiency of conversion. The organic and inorganic solar cells used as dyes can absorb more photons from sunlight and the energy gap will be less for better conversion of energy to electricity than the conventional solar cells. This paper provides an up-to-date review on the performance, characterization, and reliability of different composite polymeric materials for energy conversion. Specific attention has been given to organic solar cells because of their several advantages over others, such as their low-energy payback time, conversion efficiency and greenhouse emissions. Finally, this paper provides the recent progress on the application of both organic and inorganic solar cells for electric power generations together with several challenges that are currently faced.

Abstract:Flexible energy storage devices have received much attention owing to their promising applications in rising wearable electronics. By virtue of their high designability, light weight, low cost, high stability, and mechanical flexibility, polymer materials have been widely used for realizing high electrochemical performance and excellent flexibility of energy storage devices. In this review, flexible energy storage devices including supercapacitors and batteries are firstly introduced briefly. Then the design requirements and specific applications of polymer materials as electrodes, electrolytes, separators, and packaging layers of flexible energy storage devices are systematically discussed with an emphasis on the material design and device performance. The remaining challenges and future directions are finally summarized to guide future studies on the development of polymer materials for flexible energy storage devices.

Abstract:In the light of an ever‐increasing energy demand, the rising number of portable applications, the growing market of electric vehicles, and the necessity to store energy from renewable sources on large scale, there is an urgent need for suitable energy storage systems. In most batteries, the energy is stored by exploiting metals or metal‐ion‐based reactions. However, nearly every modern battery would not function without the help of polymers. Polymers fulfill several important tasks in battery cells. They are applied as binders for the electrode slurries, in separators and membranes, and as active materials, where charge is stored in organic moieties. This review concentrates on recent research on polymers utilized for every aspect of a battery, discussing state‐of‐the‐art lithium cells, current redox‐flow systems, and polymeric thin‐film batteries. The focus is on the properties of the polymers applied in different battery systems and how they affect their overall performance.

Abstract:In order to overcome burgeoning energy demands along with the ecological crisis caused by dwindling amounts of fossil fuel and increasing levels of carbonaceous emission, there is an immediate need to develop economical, eco-friendly systems for energy applications. To overcome this issue, use of non-carbon materials has been suggested, but their commercial usage is limited due to intermittency and high operational costs. Currently, layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are prospective contenders for energy applications by virtue of unique physicochemical properties and excellent theoretical specific capacitance. Additionally, LDH–polymer matrix composites (PMCs) have also emerged as nexus materials in energy storage sector since they surpass disadvantages of both LDHs and polymers and broaden the horizons for their practical applications. The current review highlights applications of LDH–PMCs as supercapacitors in terms of maximum specific capacitance, energy density, power density, and rate capability along with insights into mechanism of capacitance, thereby outlining their utility in energy storage.

Abstract:The contemporary research of this modern world aims at the storage of electrical energy. Nanotechnology plays an important role in offering nanoscale materials to energy resources and storage. This paper reviews some of the nanomaterials used in energy transformation and storage systems. Various nanomaterials, i.e., carbon nanotube, nanofibre, metal nanoparticle and nanocrystalline hybrids are briefed here which are used in a supercapacitor, solar cell, lithium-ion battery and hydrogen storage. CNT-based nanocomposites show higher capacity and durability compared to metal nanomaterials and hybrids. Materials like Lithium Tungstate, Silver, Poly (Trimethylene Carbonate) and Graphene which are used in Electrochromic Devices show transmittance of ~ 90% in different environments. Chromium Oxide which is treated as anode material in ECDs exhibits transmission of ~ 90%-95% in visible and IR spectra.

Abstract:Conducting polymer hydrogels are emerging as a promising class of polymeric materials for various technological applications, especially for energy storage devices due to their unique combination of advantageous features of conventional polymers and organic conductors. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional synthesis, new synthetic routes in which acid molecules are adopted as both crosslinkers and dopants have been developed for conducting polymer hydrogels with unique 3D hierarchical porous nanostructures, resulting in high electrical conductivity, large surface area, structural tunability and hierarchical porosity for rapid mass/charge transport. The newly developed conducting polymer hydrogels exhibit high performance when applied as active electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors or as functional binder materials for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. This feature article summarizes the synthesis of conducting polymer hydrogels, presents their applications in energy storage, and discusses further opportunities and challenges.

Abstract:Electrochemical energy storage devices are becoming increasingly important to our global society, and polymer materials are key components of these devices. As the demand for high-energy density devices increases, innovative new materials that build on the fundamental understanding of physical phenomena and structure–property relationships will be required to enable high-capacity next-generation battery chemistries. In this Review, we discuss core polymer science principles that are used to facilitate progress in battery materials development. Specifically, we discuss the design of polymeric materials for desired mechanical properties, increased ionic and electronic conductivity and specific chemical interactions. We also discuss how polymer materials have been designed to create stable artificial interfaces and improve battery safety. The focus is on these design principles applied to advanced silicon, lithium-metal and sulfur battery chemistries.

Abstract:Biomass-derived carbonaceous materials have attracted significant research interest for their potential applications in energy storage devices due to their easy accessibility, renewability, high abundance, low cost, and eco-friendly synthesis. However, the practical application of such materials in energy storage devices is limited due to their relatively rare storage sites and low diffusion kinetics. Therefore, various strategies have been designed and developed for the modification of material structures to overcome these problems. However, this review summarizes the latest progress in the preparation methods of carbonaceous materials and their surface modification through various strategies. Further, applications of carbonaceous materials in energy storage devices such as supercapacitors, lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, etc., are reviewed, which have never been addressed simultaneously in literature. Furthermore, the advantages and disadvantages of biomass-derived materials have been discussed. Finally, possible future directions for the design and development of biomass-derived low-cost carbonaceous materials for energy storage devices have also been suggested in detail.

Abstract:Dielectric composites boost the family of energy storage and conversion materials, as they can take full advantage of both matrix and filler. This review aims at summarizing the recent progress in developing high-performance polymer- and ceramic-based dielectric composites, emphasis are placed on capacitive energy storage and harvesting, solid-state cooling, temperature stability, electromechanical energy interconversion, and high power applications. Emerging fabrication techniques of dielectric composites such as 3D printing, electrospinning, and cold sintering are addressed, following by highlighted challenges and future research opportunities. The advantages and limitations of the typical theoretical calculation method, such as finite-element, phase-field model, and machine learning methods, for designing high-performance dielectric composites are discussed. This review is concluded by providing a brief perspective on the future development of composite dielectrics toward energy and electronic devices.

Abstract:With steadily growing environmental problems by synthetic compounds, using eco-friendly biomass-derived biopolymers and other native materials has drawn tremendous attention and extensive interest, to replace traditional petroleum-based materials. Biopolymer-based hydrogels, as emerging and renewable electrolyte materials, have been considered to be competitive candidates for flexible and smart electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices due to the low cost, eco-friendly and degradability. Recently, biopolymer-based hydrogel electrolytes with desirable structure design or functional development have exhibited broad application prospects in diverse energy storage and conversion devices, such as multifunctional supercapacitors, flexible lithium-ion batteries and zinc-ion batteries. Herein, the characterization, synthesis, and performance validation of biopolymer-based hydrogel electrolytes are summarized, analyzed, and discussed. Current progress of electrochemical performance and additional functions (such as self-healing, stretchability, anti-freezing, and etc.) in developing biopolymer-based hydrogel electrolytes for supercapacitors and batteries are comprehensively reviewed. We also present the remaining challenges of using biopolymer-based hydrogel electrolytes for advanced energy storage and conversion devices and propose the underlying approaches to facilitate further development and research.

We also discussed the recent research advancements of 2D polymer nanosheets in the fields of energy storage and conversion applications, such as batteries, supercapacitors, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis.
