Abstract:The intrinsic limitations of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with regard to safety, cost, and the availability of raw materials have promoted research on so-called "post-LIBs". The recent intense research of post-LIBs provides an invaluable lesson that existing electrode materials used in LIBs may not perform as well in post-LIBs, calling for new material designs compliant with emerging batteries based on new chemistries. One promising approach in this direction is the development of materials with intercalated water or organic molecules, as these materials demonstrate superior electrochemical performance in emerging battery systems. The enlarged ionic channel dimensions and effective shielding of the electrostatic interaction between carrier ions and the lattice host are the origins of the observed electrochemical performance. Moreover, these intercalants serve as interlayer pillars to sustain the framework for prolonged cycles. Representative examples of such intercalated materials applied to batteries based on Li+, Na+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ ions and supercapacitors are considered, along with their impact in materials research.

Abstract:All solid-state thin film batteries of lithium-iodine can be simply fabricated by coating a thin solid LiI(HPN)(2) electrolyte layer on the surface of an Li plate and then exposing its surface to I-2 vapor, which then shows improved rate performance and rechargeability. A compound of I-2-LiI(HPN)(2) can serve as a new cathode for Li/I-2 batteries.

Abstract:Composite solid electrolytes are attractive as they combine the high ionic conductivity of ceramic nanoparticles and the excellent mechanical properties of polymer electrolytes. Vertically aligned ceramic nanoparticles in the polymer matrix represent an ideal structure for maximizing ionic conductivity of composite electrolytes. The ice-templating method was used to build rechargeable solid-state lithium metal batteries with a vertically aligned ceramic/polymer composite electrolyte composed of high ionic conductivity Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)(3) (LAGP) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) polymer. The vertical LAGP walls provide continuous channels for fast ionic transport, while the PEO matrix renders the composite electrolyte flexible. This solid-state composite electrolyte has a conductivity of 1.67 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at room temperature and 1.11 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 60 degrees C. LiFePO4 (LFP)/vertically aligned LAGP- PEO/Li full cells were also developed with a high capacity retention of 93.3% after 300 cycles. This study demonstrates the successful application of vertically aligned ceramic/polymer composite electrolytes for solid-state batteries with high performance.
In-situ Formation of LiF-rich Composite Interlayer for Dendrite-Free All-Solid-state Lithium Batteries

Abstract:Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based composite electrolytes are considered as competent candidates to achieve high energy density all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) due to good flexibility, which can effectively solve the problem of large interfacial resistance with electrodes. However, poor mechanical strength and low Li+ transference number can't restrain the formation and growth of Li dendrites, leading to parasitic reaction between electrolyte and Li anode and unsatisfied coulombic efficiency. Herein, Li metal is pre-treated by poly(vinylidene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/CuF2 composite to form a stable interlayer on the anode. In-situ reaction of CuF2 with Li greatly improves the contact between PVDF-HFP layer and Li anode, forming a LiF-rich modified layer. The interlayer with high mechanical strength and ionic conductivity can not only suppress the formation of Li dendrites, but also achieve the growth restriction and elimination of dendrites. Moreover, excellent elasticity and strong adhesion with Li anode can ensure the structure stability of modified layer during dynamic plating/ stripping of Li. Applied in ASSLBs with PEO-based electrolyte, PVDF-HFP/CuF2 modified symmetrical Li cells demonstrate increased critical current density and extended cycle life than that of bare Li or single CuF2 treated Li. Furtherly, the ASSLBs with LiFePO4 cathode show excellent cycle stability and high coulombic efficiency over 1000 cycles at 1 C.
Integrated Design of a Functional Composite Electrolyte and Cathode for All-Solid-State Li Metal Batteries

Abstract:Solid composite electrolytes exhibit tremendous potential for practical all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs), whereas the interfacial contact between cathode and electrolyte remains a long-standing problem. Herein, we demonstrate an integrated design of a double-layer functional composite electrolyte and cathode (ID-FCC), which effectively improves interfacial contact and increases cycle stability. One composite electrolyte layer, PVDFLiFSI@LLZNTO (PL1@L), comes into contact with the LLZNTO (Li6.5La3Zr1.5Nb0.4Ta0.1O12)-containing cathode, while the other layer, PEOLiTFSI@LLZNTO (PL2@L) with a Li anode, is introduced in each. Such a design establishes a continuous network for the transport of Li+ on the interface, and includes the advantages of both PEO and PVDF for improving stability with the electrodes. The Li symmetric cells Li/PL2@L-PL1@L-PL2@L/Li steadily cycled for more than 3800 h under the current density of 0.05 mA cm−2 at 60 °C. Outstandingly, the all-solid-state batteries of LiFePO4-ID-FCC/Li showed an initial specific capacity of 161.5 mA h g−1 at 60 °C, demonstrating a remaining capacity ratio of 56.1% after 1000 cycles at 0.1 C and 74.5% after 400 cycles at 0.5 C, respectively. This work provides an effective strategy for solid-state electrolyte and interface design towards ASSLMBs with high electrochemical performance.
Non-flammable liquid polymer-in-salt electrolyte enabling secure and dendrite-free lithium metal battery

Abstract:Lithium-metal batterie (LMB) is regarded as one the most promising high energy battery systems, however the safety concern from lithium dendrites and organic liquid electrolytes seriously impedes its widely application. Herein, a non-flammable liquid “polymer-in-salt” composite electrolyte with superior dendrite-suppression capability is well designed and achieved by using lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt, polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether (PEGDME) and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropylether (TTE). Non-flammable TTE used here is on one hand to reduce the high viscosity of this “PEGDME polymer in LiTFSI salt” electrolyte (PISE), and thus enhance its wettability; on the other hand, to maintain the merits of highly contented salt. By taking advantage of these localized highly concentrated lithium salts, aggregated ion clusters are generated in this PISE-TTE system, which construct fast ionic transportation channels, and thus accelerates Li+ transportation. Furthermore, this PISE-TTE electrolyte system interacts with Li anode forming a robust organic/inorganic dual layer solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. With the assistance of this tough SEI, the optimized PISE0.7-TTE90 exhibits outstanding anti-dendrite growth behavior in Li/Li and Li/Cu cells. Moreover, PISE0.7-TTE90 also delivers an impressive performance in both Li/LiFePO4 (LFP, a capacity of 150 mAh g−1 at 0.5C after 150 cycles) and Li@Cu/LFP (electrochemically deposited Li on Cu current collector, a capacity of 150 mAh g−1 at 0.5C after 50 cycles) cells.

Abstract:Li-O2 batteries represent a promising rechargeable battery candidate to answer the energy challenges our world is facing, thanks to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density. However, the poor cycling stability of the Li-O2 system and, overall, important safety issues due to the formation of Li dendrites, combined with the use of organic liquid electrolytes and O2 cross-over, inhibit their practical applications. As a solution to these various issues, we propose a composite gel polymer electrolyte consisting of a highly cross-linked polymer matrix, containing a dextrin-based nanosponge and activated with a liquid electrolyte. The polymer matrix, easily obtained by thermally activated one pot free radical polymerization in bulk, allows to limit dendrite nucleation and growth thanks to its cross-linked structure. At the same time, the nanosponge limits the O2 cross-over and avoids the formation of crystalline domains in the polymer matrix, which, combined with the liquid electrolyte, allows a good ionic conductivity at room temperature. Such a composite gel polymer electrolyte, tested in a cell containing Li metal as anode and a simple commercial gas diffusion layer, without any catalyst, as cathode demonstrates a full capacity of 5.05 mAh cm−2 as well as improved reversibility upon cycling, compared to a cell containing liquid electrolyte.

Abstract:With a higher demand towards the energy density of power batteries for electric vehicles, the Li-metal batteries (LMBs) have staged a comeback in recent years. However, the low cycle efficiency and safety issues associated with Li dendrite growth and electrolyte combustion severely limit their practical applications. Here we prepare a highly concentrated TFSI-FSI dual-anion electrolyte (HCDE) based on lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI), N-ethyl-N-methyl-pyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ([C2mpyr][FSI]), and dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The co-solvent of [C2mpyr][FSI] and DMC exhibits promoted ionic conductivity, low viscosity and non-flammability. In HCDE, the TFSI-FSI dual-anion is preferentially decomposed to obtain a robust inorganic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), which induces a dense and uniform Li deposition on the Li-metal surface and effectively suppresses Li dendrite growth. Meanwhile, it also enables good suppression of Al current collector corrosion and stable cycling performance at high-voltage owing to the high salt-to-solvent ratio. The LFP (LiFePO4)/Li cells steadily deliver a long-term cycle life and obtain ∼80% capacity retention with an extremely high CE (∼99.9%) after 500 cycles, and the NCM523 (LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2)/Li cells retain ∼95% of their original capacity after 100 cycles at a high cut-off voltage of 4.5 V. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and molecular dynamic (MD)-density functional theory (DFT) simulations, the forming mechanism of SEI layer is suggested.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) dominate portable electronics and electric vehicles for their high energy density and long cycle life. However, a part of active Li loss in the initial charge process for the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation at the anode surface, which reduces the energy density and cycle life of LIBs. Prelithiation attempts have been widely regarded as providing additional active lithium to address this issue. Li 5 FeO 4 (LFO) as a cathode prelithiation additive with high donable lithium ions is very promising. But the residues of the gas release limited its further application due to its low conductivity in the first charge process. Here, we prepared CNT/ Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) /LFO/polypropylene (PP) separator by an electrospinning method, the CNT/PAN/LFO/PP separator can effectively improve cycle performance of LFP batteries, benefiting from Li 2 O participation in the construction of SEI and higher infiltration rate of the electrolyte resulting in faster interfacial Li + transfer kinetics. The LFP pouch cell with CNT/PAN/LFO/PP separator can maintain a stable output over 1000 cycles (capacity fade rate per cycle of 0.005%) with a highercapacity increased by 6.2%.

Abstract:Development of rechargeable lithium metal battery (LMB) remains a challenge because of uneven lithium deposition during repeated cycles of charge and discharge. Ionic liquids have received intensive scientific interest as electrolytes because of their exceptional thermal and electrochemical stabilities. Ionic liquid and ionic-liquid-nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes based on 1-methy-3-propylimidazolium (IM) and 1-methy-3-propylpiperidinium (PP) have been synthesized and their ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability, mechanical properties, and ability to promote stable Li electrodeposition investigated. PP-based electrolytes were found to be more conductive and substantially more efficient in suppressing dendrite formation on cycled lithium anodes; as little as 11 wt % PP-IL in a PC-LiTFSI host produces more than a ten-fold increase in cell lifetime. Both PP- and IM-based nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes provide up to 10 000-fold improvements in cell lifetime than anticipated based on their mechanical modulus alone. Galvanostatic cycling measurements in Li/Li4 Ti5 O12 half cells using IL-nanoparticle hybrid electrolytes reveal more than 500 cycles of trouble-free operation and enhanced rate capability.

Abstract:Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based solid electrolytes have been widely studied in all-solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries due to their favorable interfacial contact with electrodes, facile fabrication, and low cost, but their inferior Li dendrite suppression capability renders low actual areal capacities of Li metal anodes. Here, we develop a high-capacity all-solid-state battery using a metal-organic framework hosted silicon (Si@MOF) anode and a fiber-supported PEO/garnet composite electrolyte. Si nanoparticles are embedded in the micro-sized MOF-derived carbon host, which efficiently accommodates the repeated deformation of Si over cycles while providing sufficient charge transfer pathways. As a result, the Si@MOF anode shows excellent interfacial stability toward the composite polymer electrolyte for over 1000 h and achieves a high reversible areal capacity of 3 mAh cm-2. The full cell using the LiFePO4 (LFP) cathode is able to deliver 135 mAh g-1 initially and maintains 73.1% of the capacity after 500 cycles at 0.5 C and 60 °C. More remarkably, the full cells with high LFP loadings achieve areal capacities of more than 2 mAh cm-2, exceeding most PEO-based ASSBs using metallic Li. Finally, the pouch cell using the proposed design exhibits decent electrochemical performance and high safety.

Abstract:The room-temperature molten salt mixture of N,N-diethyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl)-N-methylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide ([DEME][TFSI]) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt is herein reported as electrolyte for application in Li-O2 batteries. The [DEME][TFSI]-LiTFSI solution is studied in terms of ionic conductivity, viscosity, electrochemical stability, and compatibility with lithium metal at 30 °C, 40 °C, and 60 °C. The electrolyte shows suitable properties for application in Li-O2 battery, allowing a reversible, low-polarization discharge-charge performance with a capacity of about 13 Ah g-1carbon in the positive electrode and coulombic efficiency approaching 100 %. The reversibility of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is demonstrated by ex situ XRD and SEM studies. Furthermore, the study of the cycling behavior of the Li-O2 cell using the [DEME][TFSI]-LiTFSI electrolyte at increasing temperatures (from 30 to 60 °C) evidences enhanced energy efficiency together with morphology changes of the deposited species at the working electrode. In addition, the use of carbon-coated Zn0.9 Fe0.1 O (TMO-C) lithium-conversion anode in an ionic-liquid-based Li-ion/oxygen configuration is preliminarily demonstrated.
Achieving Long Cycle Life for All-Solid-state Rechargeable Li-I2 Battery by a Confined Dissolution Strategy

Abstract:Rechargeable Li-I 2 battery has attracted considerable attentions due to its high theoretical capacity, low cost and environment-friendliness. Dissolution of polyiodides are required to facilitate the electrochemical redox reaction of the I 2 cathode, which would lead to a harmful shuttle effect. All-solid-state Li-I 2 battery totally avoids the polyiodides shuttle in a liquid system. However, the insoluble discharge product at the conventional solid interface results in a sluggish electrochemical reaction and poor rechargeability. In this work, by adopting a well-designed hybrid electrolyte composed of a dispersion layer and a blocking layer, we successfully promote a new polyiodides chemistry and localize the polyiodides dissolution within a limited space near the cathode. Owing to this confined dissolution strategy, a rechargeable and highly reversible all-solid-state Li-I 2 battery is demonstrated and shows a long-term life of over 9000 cycles at 1C with a capacity retention of 84.1%.
Layered Titanosilicates as Energy Storage Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become the dominant power source for portable devices. In search for new and better electrode materials for LIBs for future stationary storage, electronic devices and equipments, people have recently started to look over crystalline ion-exchange materials with open channels that facilitate fast lithium ion transportation through the porous network. Herein, the use of Li-exchanged titanosilicate Na-JDF-L1 with a layered structure as anode materials for LIBs was reported. It shows a discharge capacity of 364 mAh.g(-1) after the 200th cycle with ca. 100% Coulombic efficiency and negligible loss of capacity, comparable with the lithium titanate anode. Furthermore, the incorporation of TiO2 in Li(Na)-JDF-L1 improves the electrochemical performance of the electrode with better initial Coulombic efficiency and higher rate performance.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries have attracted extensive research interest due to their high energy density. Other than Li2O2 (a typical discharge product in Li-O-2 batteries), LiOH has proved to be electrochemically active as an alternative product. Here we report a simple strategy to achieve a reversible LiOH-based Li-O-2 battery by using a cation additive, sodium ions, to the lithium electrolyte. Without redox mediators in the cell, LiOH is detected as the sole discharge product and it charges at a low charge potential of 3.4 V. A solution-based reaction route is proposed, showing that the competing solvation environment of the catalyst and Li+ leads to LiOH precipitation at the cathode. It is critical to tune the cell chemistry of Li-O-2 batteries by designing a simple system to promote LiOH formation/decomposition.
PEO/garnet Composite Electrolytes for Solid-State Lithium Batteries: from “Ceramic-in-polymer” to “Polymer-in-ceramic”

Abstract:Composite polyethylene-oxide/garnet electrolytes containing LiTFSI as the lithium salt have a Li+ conductivity σLi > 10−4Scm−1 at 55°C and a low plating/stripping impedance of a dendrite-free Li-metal anode; they have been developed for a safe solid-state Li-metal rechargeable battery. Composites consisting of “ceramic-in-polymer” to “polymer-in-ceramic” that are flexible and mechanically robust are fabricated by hot-pressing. Safe pouch cells with a remarkable flexibility have been fabricated. Solid-state LiFePO4|Li batteries with electrolytes of “ceramic-in-polymer” and “polymer-in-ceramic” deliver excellent cycling stability with high discharge capacities (139.1mAhg–1 with capacity retention of 93.6% after 100 cycles) and high capacity retention (103.6% with coulombic efficiency of 100% after 50 cycles) at 0.2C and 55°C. Both kinds of electrolytes can be applied to solid-state lithium batteries.
Microporous Metal–Organic Framework (MOF)-Based Composite Polymer Electrolyte (CPE) Mitigating Lithium Dendrite Formation in All-Solid-State-Lithium Batteries

Abstract:Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) containing the amine-functionalized, zirconium-based metal–organic framework @silica (UiO-66-NH2@SiO2) and lithium, LiN(CF3SO2)2 salt (LiTFSI) are prepared using a simple hot press method. The electrochemical properties such as compatibility of the electrolyte with the Li metal anode, Li transference number, and ionic conductivity are investigated for the different systems containing different relative concentrations of the additives. The incorporation of UiO-66-NH2@SiO2 in the PEO-LiTFSI matrix not only enhanced ionic conductivity by one order of magnitude but also offered better compatibility and suppressed the formation of lithium dendrites appreciably. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies on post-cycled materials revealed the formation of lithium alkoxide (RO–Li) on the cathode and Li2O on the anode. The coin cell (2032-type) consisting of LiFePO4/CPE/Li with UiO-66-NH2@SiO2 as filler provided a discharge capacity of 151 mA h g–1 at 0.1 C-rate at 60 °C, measurably higher than control experiments utilizing SiO2 and UiO-66-NH2. The notable enhancement of electrochemical properties when incorporating the UiO-66-NH2@SiO2 at the CPE was attributed to formation of more uniform ion conduction pockets and channels within the PEO matrix, facilitated by the presence of the microporous UiO-66-NH2@SiO2. The enhanced distribution of microporous channels, where Li ions are assumed to percolate through within the matrix, is assumed to desirably reduce formation of Li dendrites by increasing diffusion channels and therefore reducing crystallization and growth of dendrites at the electrode surface.
