Abstract:We report in this paper the electric properties of nanostructured copper filament arrays self-organized by a novel electrochemical method. Due to the spontaneous oscillation of the concentration field of [Cu2+ ] in front of the growing interface, crystallites of copper and cuprous oxide appear alternately on the filaments of the electrodeposits. A conducting atomic force microscope (CAFM) and current imaging tunnelling spectroscopy (CITS) were used to characterize the electric properties of the nanostructured copper filaments. By applying a constant voltage across the conducting probe of the CAFM and the sample, an electric current mapping is achieved, in which alternating low and high current regions correspond exactly to the periodic nanostructures on the filaments. The profile of the electric current along the structured filament has been analysed, and no noticeable potential drop has been observed. A typical linear I–V curve for a metal and nonlinear I–V curve for a semiconductor were collected in the high and low current regions respectively. These results suggest that despite the periodic distribution of Cu2O crystallites on the deposited filament, there should exist a metallic core of copper crystallites inside the filament. This type of structured metal–semiconductor filament might have potential application.

Abstract:Arrays of straight cobalt filaments with periodic corrugation on the surface are electrodeposited on a glass substrate without using templates. The corrugated structures on the filaments are induced by the spontaneous oscillation of electric voltage in electrodeposition, and the periodicity can be tuned by applying different electric currents. Magnetic force microscopy indicates that when the interfilament separation is large, the magnetic domains are regularly aligned on the filament. Each corrugated structure on the filament surface corresponds to a local single magnetic domain. The domains become random when the interfilament separation becomes very small. We suggest that our results could be helpful in understanding the formation of magnetic domain patterns on a microscopic scale and may have potential application in spintronics.
Self-Assembled Metal Molecular Networks by Nanoconfinement.

Abstract:Quasi-two-dimensional (2D) metal molecular networks (MMNs) often exhibit a nanoconfinement effect and high degree of anisotropy, which are highly diverse in their mechanical, electronic, and magnetic functionalities. Here we report an interfacial self-assembly of mechanically robust 2D MMNs, in which 3d transition metals are interconnected via molecular thiol bridges. The Langmuir-Schafer assembled freestanding 2D nanosheets exhibit highly desired anisotropic charge transport and spin susceptibility, in which light and magnetic field induced charge transfer regulates the electronic interactions. Meanwhile, the mechanistic studies involving electronic structure reveal the molecular metal packing structure-controlled nanoconfinement and charge transfer. This study opens the door to 2D ultrathin metal coordination nanostructures for emerging functional materials and devices.

Abstract:Nanoscale patterned electrodeposition of metals on flat substrates has become a topic of great interest both scientifically and technologically in recent years. Here, we demonstrate the self-organized growth of extended arrays of parallel nanoscale copper wires on flat glass chips from an ultrathin aqueous electrolyte layer. Regular, periodic patterns of copper nanowires with diameters in the range of 40 nm-400 nm were grown, forming parallel arrays of alternating lines of copper and cuprous oxide at periodicities down to approx. 80 nm, depending on the deposition parameters such as voltage and pH. The resulting multiline films are investigated with respect to their structure and electrical properties using Electrical Force Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Scanning Auger Electron Spectroscopy. The results of the experiments show a strongly anisotropic behavior of the electrical properties of multiline nanostructures corresponding to their strongly anisotropic geometry.

Abstract:Gold and platinum nanowires have been grown on a silicon dioxide surface between two microfabricated electrodes from an electrolysis process under an AC signal with a DC offset. In the process, the anode electrode acted as a sacrificing layer and oxidized to metal ions. The metal ions were reduced to particles and aligned along the electric field forming nanowires connected with the cathode. Greater than 10V and 12V DC offset were required for growing gold and platinum nanowires, respectively. Other factors affecting the growth of the nanowires include frequency of applied bias and gap between the electrodes.

Abstract:In this paper, we report in detail the studies of a different self-organized copper electrodeposition carried out in an ultrathin layer of CuSO4 electrolyte. On a macroscopic scale, the morphology of the electrodeposit is fingerlike. Microscopically, each fingering branch consists of long, straight copper filaments with periodic corrugated nanostructures. Branching rate of the electrodeposit is significantly decreased, compared with the patterns grown in conventional systems. Detailed information of the growth environment in the ultrathin electrodeposition system is provided, the formation mechanism of the periodic nanostructures on the deposit filaments is explored, and the origin of the significant descent of branching rate of the electrodeposit is discussed.

Abstract:Long, straight mesoscale silver wires have been fabricated from AgNO3 electrolyte via electrodeposition without the help of templates, additives, and surfactants. Although the wire growth speed is very fast due to growth under non-equilibrium conditions, the wire morphology is regular and uniform in diameter. Structural studies reveal that the wires are single-crystalline, with the [112] direction as the growth direction. A possible growth mechanism is suggested. Auger depth profile measurements show that the wires are stable against oxidation under ambient conditions. This unique system provides a convenient way for the study of self-organization in electrochemical environments as well as for the fabrication of highly-ordered, single-crystalline metal nanowires.

Abstract:We report here a unique in-plane self-templating electrochemical growth of arrays of copper nanopearl chains from an ultrathin layer of CuSO4 electrolyte. Scanning electron microscopy indicates that the electrodeposit filaments form equally spaced bundles, which consist of long, straight, pearl-chain-like copper filaments with corrugated periodic structure. The bundle separation can be tuned by changing the applied electric current in electrodeposition. Experiments show that the periodic morphology on the nanopearl chain corresponds to the periodic distribution of copper and cuprous oxide. The mechanism for the bundle formation is discussed.

Abstract:We describe the fabrication of self-aligned split gate electrodes on suspended multiwalled carbon nanotube structures. A suspended multiwalled carbon nanotube structure was used as an evaporation mask for the deposition of metal electrodes resulting in the formation of discontinuous wire deposition. The metal deposits on the nanotubes are removed with lift-off due to the poor adhesion of metal to the nanotube surface. Using Al sacrificial layers, it was possible to fabricate self-aligned contact electrodes and control electrodes nanometers from the suspended carbon nanotubes with a single lithography step. It was also shown that the fabrication technique may also be used to form nano-gaped contact electrodes. The technique should prove useful for the fabrication of nano-electromechanical systems.

Abstract:Electrochemical metallization with copper has been developed for on-chip interconnection in microelectronics. Therefore, the need for a detailed understanding of copper electrodeposition on the micrometer and nanometer scale is essential. In particular, approaches for the self-organized growth of mesoscale wires have become of great interest recently. Here, we investigate the details of the deposit morphology of such mesoscale self-organized copper wires, focusing especially on the origin of the branching mechanism. The details of the morphology inform how the wires develop and why the branching occurs. It also shows that branching is not only associated with system noises but also with the electrical and concentration field and their coupling with interface growth. We demonstrate that by carefully adjusting the growth parameters branching can be avoided. In this way, highly ordered, periodic parallel arrays of metallic mesoscale wires were fabricated using this novel approach for self-organized growth by electrodeposition in ultrathin electrolyte layers. The results provide a general explanation for morphology formation during nonequilibrium electrocrystallization in thin electrolyte layers. This knowledge helps to develop processes for the controlled fabrication of micro- and nanostructured metallic patterns by electrochemistry.

Abstract:Nanowires typically grow along their longitudinal axis, and the long-range order among wires sustains only when a template exists. Here, we report an unprecedented electrochemical growth of ordered metallic nanowire arrays from an ultrathin electrolyte layer, which is achieved by solidifying the electrolyte solution below the freezing temperature. The thickness of the electrodeposit is instantaneously tunable by the applied electric pulses, leading to parallel ridges on webbed film without using any template. An array of metallic nanowires with desired separation and width determined by the applied pulses is formed on the substrate with arbitrary surface patterns by etching away the webbed film thereafter. This work demonstrates a previously unrecognized fabrication strategy that bridges the gap of top-down lithography and bottom-up self-organization in making ordered metallic nanowire arrays over a large area with low cost.

Abstract:In this paper we report the spontaneous formation of a nanostructured film by electrodeposition from an ultrathin electrolyte layer of CuSO4. The film consists of straight periodic ditches and ridges, which corresponds to the alternating deposition of nanocrystallites of copper and copper plus cuprous oxide, respectively. The periodicity on the film may vary from 100 nm to a few hundred nanometers depending on the experimental conditions. In the formation of the periodically nanostructured film, oscillating voltage/current has been observed across the electrodes, and the frequency depends on the pH of the electrolyte and the applied current/voltage. A model based on the coupling of [Cu2+] and [H+] in the electrodeposition is proposed to describe the oscillatory phenomena in our system. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental observations.

Abstract:Periodic magnetic domains on cobalt filaments can be stabilized by nanoscale corrugations on the surface, which are spontaneously generated by a unique electrodeposition method. The type of magnetic domains varies from anti-parallel single domains to vortex domains depending on the ratio of the spatial periodicity of the corrugations and the filament width (see figure), and can be experimentally tuned.

Abstract:The architecture of novel metallic mesostructures obtained via self-organization of growing nanowires has been investigated. Seashell-, fungus- and lotus leaf-shaped structures are reproducibly formed by programmable pulse current electrodeposition on porous membranes. The obtained samples were several millimeters in size. SEM investigation has revealed that the frame of the metallic “seashell” presents a hierarchical system with elements of fractal self-similarity at the nano- and micro-levels. The frame is a volumetric multilayer net with conical bundles of nanowires as building blocks. Pd–Ni nanowires have V-like branches and periodic bulges (“beads”). TEM study showed that nanowires consist of nanocrystallites dispersed in an amorphous matrix. Their sizes range from 4 to 15nm. Local inhomogeneity of Pd–Ni solid solution was observed. In perspective, the proposed technique can be used as a 3D printer for the purposeful synthesis of novel materials with complex quantum nano-architecture.

Abstract:We describe the nanofabrication study of self-aligned electrodes on suspended multiwalled carbon nanotube structures. When metal is deposited on a suspended multiwalled carbon nanotube structure, the nanotube acts as an evaporation mask, resulting in the formation of discontinuous electrodes. The metal deposits on the nanotubes are removed with lift-off. Using Al sacrificial layers, it was possible to fabricate self-aligned contact electrodes and control electrodes nanometers from the suspended carbon nanotubes with a single lithography step. Abstract:We report here the electrodeposition of periodically structured single-crystalline zinc branches from an ultrathin aqueous electrolyte layer of ZnSO4. The main trunk and side branches of electrodeposits are regularly angled, and each branch is made of periodic bead-like structures. Layered morphology has been observed on each bead. During electrodeposition, spontaneous oscillation of electric current occurs when constant voltage is applied across the electrodes, and the oscillation leads to periodic patterns on deposit branches. According to electron diffraction of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the whole branch of electrodeposits has the same crystallographic orientation despite the fact that the branch looks like an assembly of beads. We interpret this unique growth behavior to the epitaxial nucleation in the transport-limited growth system. Copyright (C) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Kinetic Self-Assembly of Metals on Co-polymer Templates

Abstract:In this work we seek to understand some of the fundamental processes that govern self-assembly at the nanoscale in the context of the formation of metallic structures on patterned co-polymer templates. To this end we focus on the experiments conducted by Lopes {\it et al} (Nature, 2001), where morphologies resulting from the evaporation-deposition of different metals on PS-b-PMMA phase separated templates were studied. We show that the different morphologies obtained can be understood in terms of the relative importance of the energetics and kinetics. We then focus on a particular morphology: micron long wire-like states obtained by the evaporation-deposition of silver on the template. We show the existence of ``non-trivial'' correlations between adjacent wires that can be understood based on a purely kinetic mechanism. We also compare these correlations quantitatively to those obtained from simulations done with the relevant experimental parameters and find them in good agreement.

Abstract:We report here a self-organized electroless deposition of copper in an ultrathin layer CuSO4 of electrolyte. Microscopically the branching rate of the copper deposits is significantly decreased, forming an array of smooth polycrystalline filaments. Compared with a conventional electrodeposition system, no macroscopic electric field is involved and the thickness of the electrolyte layer is greatly decreased. Therefore the electroless deposition takes place in a nearly ideal, two-dimensional diffusion-limited environment. We suggest that restriction of the thickness of the electrolyte film is responsible for the generation of smoother branches of the electrodeposits. Our data also show that even in a diffusion-limited scenario the aggregate morphology is not necessarily very ramified and fractal-like.

An unprecedented fabrication approach that allows to construct metallic (cobalt) nanowires on an arbitrarily shaped surface is reported. The spatial separation of nanowires varies from 70 to 3000 nm and the line width changes from 50 to 250 nm depending on growth conditions.
