Abstract:The oxygen exchange kinetics of thin films of the oxygen-deficient double perovskite PrBaCo2O5+δ (PBCO) have been determined by electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) and by oxygen-isotope exchange and depth profiling (IEDP). Microstructural studies indicate that the PBCO films, prepared by pulsed laser deposition, have excellent single-crystal quality and epitaxial nature. The ECR and IEDP measurements reveal that the PBCO films have high electronic conductivity and rapid surface exchange kinetics, although the ECR data indicate the presence of two distinct kinetic pathways. The rapid surface kinetics compared with those of other perovskites suggest the application of PBCO as a cathode material in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Abstract:Reducing the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells from 1000 °C to intermediate temperatures (IT, 500-700 °C) has been a research focus in recent years. At ITs, cathode polarization of conventional (La,Sr)Mn03 type electrodes becomes prohibitively large, therefore, cathode materials with faster oxygen transport and exchange kinetics are needed. Oxygen-deficient double perovskite oxides with mixed ionic-electronic conductivities are promising cathode materials for use with ceria based electrolytes. We have prepared dense epitaxial PrBaCo2O5+x (PBCO) and LaBaCo2O5+x+ (LBCO) thin films on SrTiO3 (STO) and LaAlO3 (LAO) single crystalline substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). Rocking curve measurement indicated an excellent epitaxial nature for these films. The oxygen exchange kinetics of PBCO and LBCO thin films has been determined by electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR). Surface oxygen exchange coefficients were obtained by fitting the ECR profiles. The results for PBCO and LBCO thin films are compared.

Abstract:Oxygen exchange at a highly oriented La0.5Sr0.5CoO3−δ thin film prepared on (100) surfaces of an yttria-stabilized zirconia single crystal by pulsed-laser deposition was studied with ac impedance spectroscopy under various temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Three distinctive features observed in the impedance spectra were assigned to contributions from the ionic conduction of the electrolyte, oxide ion transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface, and the oxygen exchange on the film surface. An equivalent circuit model was proposed to analyze the impedance results, from which the surface chemical exchange coefficients, kchem, were derived as a function of temperature and oxygen partial pressure.

Abstract:The Sr and Fe co-doped double perovskites PrBaCo2O5.5+δ (PrBCO) thin films of Pr(Ba0.5Sr0.5)(Co1.5Fe0.5)O5.5+δ (PBSCFO) were epitaxially grown for chemical catalytic studies. The PBSCFO epitaxial films were monitored their resistance behavior R(t) under the switching flow of reducing and oxidizing gases as a function of the gas flow time t. The R(t) vs. t relationships determined at various temperatures show the occurrence of two oxidation processes, Co2.5+ ↔ Co3+ and Co3+ ↔ Co3.5+. The observed R(t) vs. t relationships were fitted to Fick's second law for one-dimensional diffusion of charge carriers to derive the diffusivity D(T) and (T) for the two processes at various temperatures T, and the D(T) vs. T relationships were analyzed in terms of the Arrhenius relationship to find the activation energies Ea for each process. Oscillations in the dR(t)/dt plots, observed under oxidation reactions, were discussed in terms of a layer-by-layer oxygen vacancy exchange diffusion mechanism. Our work suggests that thin films of LnBCO (Ln = lanthanide) with their A and B sites doped as in PBSCFO are excellent candidates for the development of low or intermediate temperature energy conversion devices and gas sensor applications.

Abstract:Highly conductive PrBaCo2O5.5+delta thin films were grown on (001) SrTiO3 by pulsed laser deposition. Microstructural studies from synchrotron x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the as-grown PrBaCo2O5.5+delta films are a-axis oriented with excellent single crystallinity. Two domain structures with c axes in the plane directions parallel to the substrate surface were found with an atomic sharp interface. Transport property and isothermal magnetoresistance measurements for both as-grown and post-annealing were done to understand the physical properties of the films. An abnormal positive magnetoresistance effect was observed in the postannealed films, which suggests that the spins in the system are polarized easier. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Single-crystalline epitaxial thin films of PrBaCo2O5.5+δ (PrBCO) were prepared, and their resistance R(t) under a switching flow of oxidizing and reducing gases were measured as a function of the gas flow time t in the temperature range of 200–800 °C. During the oxidation cycle under O2, the PrBCO films exhibit fast oscillations in their dR(t)/dt vs. t plots, which reflect the oxidation processes, Co2+/Co3+ → Co3+ and Co3+ → Co3+/Co4+, that the Co atoms of PrBCO undergo. Each oscillation consists of two peaks, with larger and smaller peaks representing the oxygen/hydrogen diffusion through the (BaO)(CoO2)(PrO)(CoO2) layers of PrBCO via the oxygen-vacancy-exchange mechanism. This finding paves a significant avenue for cathode materials operating in low-temperature solid-oxide-fuel-cell devices and for chemical sensors with wide range of operating temperature.

Abstract:PBCO films have been successfully fabricated at different temperatures. X-ray diffraction results show that the orientation of PBCO films varies with decreasing deposition temperature. The optimal deposition condition for a-axis oriented PBCO films is 15Pa oxygen pressure and 700°C. Raman scattering measurements indicate that the 514cm−1 of Ag phonon mode can be used as a criterion for determining whether the film is a-axis-oriented or not, e.g., the intensity of 514cm−1 mode is the strongest for c-axis-oriented film but almost disappears for a-oriented film. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirms that our a-axis-oriented film has a good structural quality.

Abstract:Epitaxial PrBaCo2O5+δ (PBCO, 0≤ δ ≤ 1) thin films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition. The structural and electrical properties of the films were characterized at high temperatures in reduced environments. X-ray diffraction scans at high temperature in reduced environment show potential structural transitions of PBCO as evidenced by both a large (Δl = 0.335 nm) expansion of the out-plane (c-axis) lattice, due to thermal and chemical expansion, and a step in the expansion of the c-axis lattice parameter. These transitions indicate the presence of oxygen vacancy ordering as the oxygen content in the films is reduced. Resistivity measurements under the same environments also show evidence of sharp transitions related with the structural transformations. This study helps the understanding of the structure-property relationship of PBCO at high temperature and provides important technological information to utilize these materials for solid oxide fuel cell at intermediate temperatures.

Abstract:The role of oxygen pressure on the microstructure, dielectric properties, and leakage mechanisms of polycrystalline Ba(Fe(1/2)Nb(1/2))O(3) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition was investigated. Strong oxygen pressure dependence of the crystal structure was observed together with the structure distortion. Investigation on the dielectric properties showed the multidispersive relaxation nature for all Ba(Fe(1/2)Nb(1/2))O(3) thin films. The conduction properties of Ba(Fe(1/2)Nb(1/2))O(3) thin films prepared in various oxygen pressures were also discussed. Space-charge-limited conduction may have a dominant role in the thin films deposited in 1 and 15 Pa oxygen pressure, and for the thin films grown in 10 Pa, the Poole-Frenkel conduction was suggested. Abstract:By using pulsed laser deposition, Ba0.95La0.05PbO3 (BLPO) thin films with different substrate temperatures (550–750°C) and oxygen pressures (5–20Pa) were prepared on SrTiO3 (100) substrates. The charge valences of Ba and Pb cations in all the films are determined to be +2 and +4 by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. However, surface roughness of the films doesn’t keep unchanged, it increases with increasing temperature and oxygen pressure. The resistivity is significantly affected by substrate temperature and oxygen pressure, which increases with the former and decreases with the latter. Especially, the films deposited under 600°C and 10Pa oxygen pressure show metallic transport behavior with nearly temperature-insensitive values, as evidenced by the resistivity of 6.24×10−5Ωm and 5.41×10−5Ωm at 300K and 15K, respectively. Based on the structure and transport measurements, the optimized deposition conditions are determined to be close to 600°C and 10Pa. This work may provide some helpful clues for further work on tuning properties of BLPO films.

Abstract:Praseodymium doped cerium oxide (PCO) shows mixed ionic and electronic conducting (MIEC) characteristics at relatively high pO(2) (e.g. air) and enhanced oxygen storage capacity (OSC), of interest for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes and three way catalysts, resulting from the ready reduction of Pr to its trivalent state. This reduction also results in a change of lattice parameter, known as chemical expansion, and changes in optical absorption related to the formation of a Pr impurity band. These properties can be measured as a function of time, yielding oxide ion diffusion and surface exchange coefficients. In this manuscript, the diffusivity and/or surface exchange of PCO is explored using TGA and dilatometry of bulk specimens and HTXRD and optical absorption of thin films. The HTXRD and optical absorption measurements promise the ability to monitor both thermodynamic and kinetic properties of thin film materials exhibiting wide swings in oxygen stoichiometry.

Abstract:Samples of PrBaCo2O5.50+δ (δ=−0.15–0.14), synthesized by solid-state reactions, were investigated to ascertain oxygen compositional effects on transport/magnetic properties. Resistivity decreases with increasing oxygen content, indicative of p-type conduction. A metal-insulator transition was observed at 330K only for sample PrBaCo2O5.52, coinciding with phase transition and spin-state transition of Co3+. When δ deviates from zero, samples show insulator–insulator transitions, although for sample δ=0.14, no transition occurs but only semi-conductive behavior appears. Electronic transport is governed by the hopping mechanism at lower temperatures and thermal activation at higher temperatures. All samples underwent paramagnetic–ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic transitions, except PrBaCo2O5.64, which only went through a paramagnetic–ferromagnetic transition. The ferromagnetic state for δ<0 originates with the Co3+/Co2+ super-exchange interaction; for δ>0, it stems from the Co3+/Co4+ double exchange interaction.

Abstract:The resonant elastic scattering O-16(alpha,alpha)O-16 at near 3.045 MeV is a very powerful tool For determining the oxygen concentration in oxide films. The resonance yield can be transformed into the stoichiometric ratio of oxygen to Ba-Ti as a function of the probed depth. By means of the resonance yield, we can obtain the oxygen concentration in BaTiO3 films. In this work the method was used to analyze the oxygen concentration of the BaTiO3 films deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at different oxygen ambience. Our experimental results demonstrate that the oxygen concentration in the films deposited by PLD is homogeneous, and the effect of oxygen pressure in the process of deposition on the oxygen concentration in the films is very significant. It is shown in our experiment that 20 Pa is the lowest value of oxygen pressure for forming optimum BaTiO3 films by the PLD method. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Oxygen content in transition metal oxides is one of the most important parameters to control for the desired physical properties. Recently, we have systematically studied the oxygen content and property relationship of the double perovskite PrBaCo2O5.5+δ (PBCO) thin films deposited on the LaAlO3 substrates. The oxygen content in the films was varied by in-situ annealing in a nitrogen, oxygen, or ozone environment. Associated with the oxygen content, the out-of-plane lattice parameter progressively decreases with increasing oxygen content in the films. The saturated magnetization shows a drastic increase and resistivity is significantly reduced in the ozone annealed samples, indicating the strong coupling between physical properties and oxygen content. These results demonstrate that the magnetic properties of PBCO films are highly dependent on the oxygen contents, or the film with higher oxygen uptake has the largest magnetization.

Abstract:Oriented thin films of La0.5Sr0.5CoO3-x were deposited on single-crystal 9.5 mol% Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 by laser deposition. The films were infused with O-18 by exchange with 20 kPa O-2 at 300-400 degrees C, then quenched and depth profiled by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. Abstract:In this study, samarium (Sm-10at%)-doped BiFeO3 (SmBFO) thin films were grown on platinum-coated glass substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to unveil the correlation between the microstructures and nanomechanical properties of the films. The PLD-derived SmBFO thin films were prepared under various oxygen partial pressures (PO2) of 10, 30, and 50 mTorr at a substrate temperature of 600 °C. The scanning electron microscopy analyses revealed a surface morphology consisting of densely packed grains, although the size distribution varied with the PO2. X-ray diffraction results indicate that all SmBFO thin films are textured and preferentially oriented along the (110) crystallographic orientation. The crystallite sizes of the obtained SmBFO thin films calculated from the Scherrer and (Williamson–Hall) equations increased from 20 (33) nm to 25 (52) nm with increasing PO2. In addition, the nanomechanical properties (the hardness and Young's modulus) of the SmBFO thin films were measured by using nanoindentation. The relationship between the hardness and crystalline size of SmBFO thin films appears to closely follow the Hall–Petch equation. In addition, the PO2 dependence of the film microstructure, the crystallite size, the hardness, and Young's modulus of SmBFO thin films are discussed.
