Fluid flow is believed to cause waves' velocity dispersion and intrinsic attenuation in a wide frequency range. In this paper, pore distribution heterogeneity is considered to develop a reformed double‐porosity theory, so that we can estimate velocities and attenuation in the case of single fluid being saturated in the reservoir rocks which have heterogeneous pore‐distribution. Theory analysis provides the relationships between waves' velocity and attenuation and microcrack's permeability and porosity. All Biot, BISQ, Visco‐BISQ and double‐porosity theory are used to investigate the velocity‐dispersion phenomena in the broad‐band experimental data of Guang'an sandstone, which is collected from Guang'an gas field of Si'chuan basin, southwest China. Results show that only double‐porosity theory can provide a wide‐frequency‐range dispersion curve (with seismic band included) which can fit experiment data well. Other theories fall into the problem of being restricted into a narrow‐band dispersion.Permalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/1.3603715FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byVelocity dispersion of P waves in sandstone and carbonate: Double‐porosity and local fluid flow theoryJing Ba, Hong Cao, and Fengchang Yao21 October 2010 Beijing 2009 International Geophysical Conference and Exposition, Beijing, China, 24–27 April 2009ISBN (print):978-1-56080-284-6ISSN (online):2159-6832Copyright: 2009 Pages: publication data© 2009 Copyright © 2009 Society of Exploration Geophysicists and China Petroleum SocietyPublisher:Society of Exploration Geophysicists HistoryPublished Online: 28 Jun 2011 CITATION INFORMATION Jing Ba, Hong Cao, Fengchang Yao, Zifang Yang, and Jianxin Nie, (2009), "Pore heterogeneity induces double‐porosity in Guang'an sandstone," SEG Global Meeting Abstracts : 190-190. https://doi.org/10.1190/1.3603715 Plain-Language Summary PDF DownloadLoading ...
