Abstract:Black TiO2−x is an attractive material due to its adjustable band structure, useful in different applications, and has been heavily investigated and developed. The current reduction of TiO2 involves a process from surface to center: thus, the issue of either insufficient or excessive reduction seems inevitable. To the best of our knowledge, it is rarely reported that a homogeneous defect distribution can be facilely achieved inside black TiO2−x. In this study, a bulk-reduced rutile TiO2−x was obtained via a circuitous two-step approach, with an intermediate Magneli phase (TinO2n−1). With the decomposition of a solid atmosphere creator (e.g. KClO4 grains) at a high temperature, the missing oxygen ions in Ti4O7 could be replenished quantitatively. The TEM and SAED results reveal that the oxidation process is not just a surface reaction, but it involves reverse displacement or structural rearrangement inside the crystal. In particular, the periodic variation of crystallographic sheer planes was the direct evidence of the above bulk reaction, i.e. unified long period for Ti4O7 and varied long period for critical ratio sample. The as-prepared samples showed different band gaps and colors, based on their oxygen content. KClO4, with a critical mixing ratio of around 17.5 mol%, could almost oxidize Ti4O7 to black rutile TiO2−x. Furthermore, the sample formed at the critical ratio showed a considerable photo-thermal response speed of 1.7 °C s−1 and an equilibrium temperature of up to 70 °C under irradiation with light above 400 nm, which can be an evidence for the enhancement of non-intrinsic absorption. In short, this study provides a new route for the controllable preparation of black TiO2−x, and a possibility for further development of other solid atmosphere creators.
Sol–gel Synthesis and Sintering of Nano-Size Li2TiO3 Powder

Abstract:High purity and nano-sized Li2TiO3 powder was synthesized by a newly developed sol-gel method using water as the reaction medium and LiNO3 and Ti(C6H6O7)(2) as raw materials at the temperature as low as 500 degrees C. Phase analysis, morphology, microstructure and linear shrinkage behavior of the powder were determined by XRD, TEM, SEM, dilatometer et al. The experimental results showed that the primary particle size of the obtained powder was as small as 40 nm. The powder possessed excellent sinterability, exhibiting a linear shrinkage of 14% while sintered to 1200 degrees C. The sintered pellets fabricated from the powder at 1100 degrees C for 4 h reached a density as high as 90% T.D. The process developed in this work was simple and convenient to realize mass production. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All fights reserved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a low-temperature reduction method for exhibiting fine control over the oxidation state of substitutional Mn ions in strontium titanate (SrTiO3) bulk powder. We employ NaBH4 as the chemical reductant that causes significant changes in the oxidation state and oxygen vacancy complexation with Mn2+ dopants at temperatures <350°C where lattice reduction is negligible. At higher reduction temperatures, we also observe the formation of Ti3+ in the lattice by diffuse-reflectance and low-temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. In addition to Mn2+, Mn4+, and the Mn2+ complex with an oxygen vacancy, we also observe a sharp resonance in the EPR spectrum of heavily reduced Mn-doped SrTiO3. This sharp signal is tentatively assigned to surface superoxide ion that is formed by the surface electron transfer reaction between Ti3+ and O2. The ability to control the relative amounts of various paramagnetic defects in SrTiO3 provides many possibilities to study in a model system the impact of tunable dopant-defect interactions for spin-based electronic applications or visible-light photocatalysis.

Abstract:In this work, a thermal reduction process via ultrafine titanium powder as the reducing agent under argon atmosphere is firstly used to prepare Ti 4 O 7 . Compared with the conventional method, this experiment process reduces the sintering temperature to 850°C. The phase transformation and the morphology of the as-prepared powders are examined by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Besides, it is found that the Ti 4 O 7 powders obtained by titanium thermal reduction method exhibited the crystal structure, distinctly possessing an average particle size around 750 nm. The as-prepared Ti 4 O 7 nanoparticles are used as anode active material in lithium battery. The results demonstrate that the anode with Ti 4 O 7 calcined at 850°C by titanium thermal reduction method exhibited insertion/extraction lithium ion property.

Abstract:A high-purity Ti–48Al–2Nb–2Cr alloy powder with an oxygen content as low as 0.0572 wt.% and a particle size of <150 μm was produced from a mixture of TiO2, Al2O3, Nb2O5, and Cr2O3 powders through reduction with magnesium and deoxidation with calcium. The phase and composition of the products were analyzed. The final product mainly included γ-TiAl and minor α2-Ti3Al phases, and Ti, Al, Cr, and Nb were homogenously distributed in the powder with a mole ratio of 49.73:43.51:2.05:1.98. The reduction and deoxidation mechanisms were investigated by thermodynamic modeling using the HSC Chemistry software and Pandat software based on the Ti alloy database.

Abstract:In this study, an in-situ reduction by adding carbon powder into TiO2 in SPS was proposed and performed. TiO2-x and Magneli phase TinO2n-1 compacts were prepared by the in-situ reduction with carbon powder for enhancing the thermoelectric properties. The factors such as applied pressure, holding time in the in-situ reduction process were discussed. The compacts by the in-situ reduction were examined by SEM, XRD. The electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient were measured. The results show that the in-situ redaction is simple, safety and useful to obtain TiO2-x and Magneli phase TinO2n-1 compacts. The reduction is progressive in low applied pressures and a long holding time. TiO2-x and Magneli phase TinO2n-1 (n = 5, 6, 7, 8) compacts were obtain and had high thermoelectric properties. Power factor reached 7.31×10-4 Wm-1K-2 at 973 K.

Abstract:A systematic study on the mechano-thermic reduction of low-grade ilmenite concentrate for the production of high-grade TiO 2 powder used in the production of non-oxide ceramics for cutting tool applications has been successfully carried out. Samples were prepared via planetary ball milling and carbothermic reduction processes, and the as-reduced product was subsequently leached in order to improve the synthesized TiO 2 by removing the metallic iron in it and other minor soluble impurities dissolved in the iron. The mechano-thermic reduction was achieved by milling a representative mixture of ilmenite and carbon in a molar ratio of 1:1, followed by carbothermic reduction at 1000 °C in a laboratory high-temperature furnace for 60 min. The as-reduced product was subsequently leached at 80 °C for 6 h in a hydrochloric acid solution. It was found that there was a complete reduction of ilmenite to metallic iron and TiO 2 at 1000 °C. The results of the FESEM showed there were only two distinct regions of metallic iron (bright region) and titanium dioxide (grey region) with minor traces of unreacted carbon (dark spots), although there was clear regional demarcation between these regions. However, the iron dissolution during the acid treatment was almost 100% as there were no peaks of iron in the as-leached powder. The results of these analyses confirmed the synthesis of high-grade TiO 2 , which finds application in cutting tool applications and other areas such as in reflective pigment production.

Abstract:Tantalum lithium (LiTaO 3 ) is known as the "universal" material in the field of functional materials. However, due to its high pyroelectric coefficient and transmission efficiency, practical applications are limited. In this study, black LiTaO 3 wafer was prepared by a simple reduction process by using a new reductant composed of FeSiAl flaks, C nanoparticles, and Fe-C core–shell nanoparticles. It was found that the as-prepared wafers have tunable light transmission efficiency and resistance. Moreover, it was also found that the annealing temperature of 800 °C is the threshold temperature of the wafer in the reduction process. Furthermore, it was revealed that the underlying blacking mechanism could be attributed to the wafers' generation of TaC and O vacancies during the reduction process. This work presents a simple method to blackening, uncovers a novel mechanism, and provides tunable light and resistivity transmission efficiency of LiTaO 3 , which may serve as benchmarks for related studies and promote LiTaO 3 ′s practical applicability.

Abstract:Defects engineering of oxides plays a vital role in tuning their physicochemical and electronic properties and thereby determining their potential applications. However, the safe and controllable production of effective defects in the oxides is still challenging. Here, we report a facile one-pot solid lithiothermic reduction approach to generate graded oxygen defects in TiO2 nanoparticles. Various levels of lithium reduction are systematically studied, and meanwhile, a distinct phase transition from anatase TiO2 to cubic LixTiO2 is observed with the increasing lithium ratio. The structure and evolution of surface defects and bulk phase transition are investigated in detail. Afterward, we demonstrate their applications in carbon dioxide photoreduction and photothermal imaging. The slightly reduced TiO2 with effective oxygen defects affords a highly broadened solar spectrum absorption and yields significantly enhanced visible photocatalytic activity in CO2 conversion, which is further revealed by theoretical calculations. The highly reduced TiO2 with obvious phase transition shows enhanced solar absorption and achieves high photo-thermal-conversion efficacy, showing huge potential in photo-thermal-related applications. The lithiothermic reduction is a general and effective approach to produce defects and induce phase transition in oxides, which can be used in multiple applications.
Reduced {001}-Tio2-x Photocatalysts: Noble-Metal-Free Co2 Photoreduction for Selective Ch4 Evolution

Abstract:The preparation of reduced TiO2 photocatalysts with high Ti3+ concentration is a great challenge due to their instability in air. Here we report a new approach for the synthesis of reduced TiO2 with {001} facets exposed via a hydrothermal process. By the introduction of fluoride atoms, {001} and {101} facets are formed, which act as hole and electron collectors, respectively, for charge separation. By adjusting the volume of HF added, a rutile-anatase transition is observed for the first time. EPR spectra confirm the generation of Ti3+ species in the bulk of TiO2, and Ti3+ signals are studied in the anatase and rutile phases separately. The quantified EPR shows that reduced TiO2 samples present 14 000-fold more spins compared to the pristine TiO2, and the intensity can reach as high as 24.6 x 10(19) spins per g. The obtained samples also have a unique disordered layer with a thickness of 1-2 nm on their surfaces, which contributes to the stabilization of the formed Ti3+ species by preventing their oxidation in air. In addition, the synthesized reduced TiO2 samples also exhibit wide-spectrum solar light absorption, especially in the near-infrared region. Owing to their enhanced solar light absorption, improved electron-hole separation and special facet exposure, these samples exhibit enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance and high CH4 selectivity under solar light irradiation, in the absence of a noble metal Pt as a co-catalyst.

Abstract:Via properly changing concentration of titanium precursor, tuning the residence time and controlling of the temperature field in the reaction region, nanocrystalline TiO2 powders were synthesized by the diffusion flame method with well-dispersed behavior and controlled crystal structures and particles size. The XPS and IR results showed that there existed high hydration and oxygen vacancies on the surface of the as-prepared nanocrystalline TiO2 powders, which played a dominant role in controlling polymorph fraction by altering the critical particles size of phase transition. The thermodynamics analysis demonstrated that the high hydration on TiO2 surface can produce the lattice contraction, which effectively stabilizes anatase phase. However, the oxygen vacancies on TiO2 surface can decrease activation energy of phase transition of anatase to rutile, which facilitates the phase transformation.

Abstract:The Sn–TiO2−X nanoparticles have been prepared via a rapid and simple stannous chemical reducing method. The as-prepared Sn–TiO2−X nanoparticles were investigated by means of surface photovoltage spectroscopy (SPS), XPS, and DRS technology as well as photocatalytic degradation of RhB were studied under illumination. The experiment results revealed that the reduction of the TiO2 particles raised their Fermi level, which can enhance the driven force of photoinduced electrons transferring from TiO2 to adsorbed O2 and SnO2 on the surface of TiO2. On the other hand, the amount of oxygen vacancies of the Sn–TiO2−X increased after the stannous chemical reduction. The oxygen vacancies can also effectively inhibit the recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes pairs. These factors are favorable to the photocatalytic reaction.
Study on the Fabricated Non-Stoichiometric Titanium Dioxide by In-Situ Reduction with Carbon Powder Via Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract:A novel technology was proposed to fabricate non-stoichiometric titanium dioxide (TiO 2−x ) compacts in one-step thermal process by in-situ reduction of rutile TiO 2 with carbon powder via spark plasma sintering (SPS). The rutile TiO 2 powder was reduced with three different carbon powders for comparison, and the effect of the sintering conditions on the fabricated compacts was investigated. It is found that the in-situ reduction of rutile TiO 2 with charcoal powder was easily achieved at a low pressure and high temperature (above 1473 K). Besides, the design of dynamic sintering pressure during SPS was proposed, and the results suggest that the dynamic sintering pressure contributes to the reduction of TiO 2 and the fabrication of the compacts with high-density. In addition, density methods, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy and laser micro-Raman spectrometer were performed to analyze the sintering sates, microstructures, crystal structures and phase distributions. The results show that a stable sintering environment without an increase in the pressure caused by reaction gas is a crucial role for the reduction of TiO 2 and the TiO 2−x fabrication, even the formation of Magnéli phases Ti n O 2n−1 . Finer charcoal powder is more conducive to fabricating the compact with a single Magnéli phase Ti 6 O 11 . It is expected to achieve a new breakthrough in fabrication method of the non-stoichiometric TiO 2 by a safe and economically viable method.
Purification and Phase Evolution Mechanism of Titanium Oxycarbide (ticxoy) Produced by the Thermal Reduction of Ilmenite

Abstract:The phase evolution mechanism and purification of titanium oxycarbide (TiCxOy) synthesized via the carbothermal reduction of ilmenite are investigated. The reaction process and products of the performed carbothermal reduction are analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy disperse spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy (XPS) and enthalpy, entropy and heat capacity (HSC) thermodynamic software. According to the shapes of Ti 2p3/2 and Ti 2p1/2 peaks in XPS spectra, together with the XRD analyses, the reduction products of TiO, TiCxOy or TiC can be judged. The phase evolution mechanism involves FeTi2O5, Ti2O3, Fe, TiO, TiCxOy and TiC under enhancing the content of carbon. The phase evolution law can be written as FeTiO3 → FeTi2O5 → Ti2O3 + Fe → TiO + Fe → TiCxOy + Fe. Due to the incomplete reduction state of TiCxOy, the ΔGθ of TiCxOy is detected between TiC and TiO. TiCxOy could be attained under reduction conditions of Ti:C, 1:3–1:4 in argon atmosphere at 1550 °C after 2 h. Grinding, flotation and magnetic separation processes displayed that C, TiCxOy and Fe are not dissociated until the particle size of −38 μm. TiCxOy and Fe can be separated by an iron-bath in a high temperature. 95.56% TiCxOy can be obtained, and resistance of TiCxOy is less than 0.05 Ω.
Defect-induced Regulation of Crystal Growth and Phase Transition of TiO2 Synthesized from Ti-bearing Blast Furnace Slag

Abstract:Ti-bearing blast furnace slag (TBFS) is an essential secondary Ti resource for TiO2 production. However, the TiO2 is sintered and does not meet the pigment requirements. This study investigated the effect of surface/bulk distribution of defect structures on the crystal growth and phase transition of TiO2 based on the Rietveld method. For the defects of Xn+ (Al3+/Mg2+/Zn2+), the interstitial Xn+ (Xint) is mainly located on the surface of TiO2 particles and inhibits the crystal growth. The substituted Xn+ (Xsub) is primarily located in the bulk and promotes the phase transition. The radius of Xn+ affects the stability of Xint and determines the distribution of Xint/Xsub. Thus, the major defect structures of Al3+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ (increasing radius) are Alint, Mgint/Mgsub, and Znsub, respectively. Based on this, a new co-doping method was proposed. Co-doping modifies the distribution of Xint/Xsub to regulating the crystal growth and phase transition. Finally, TiO2 for pigment with a small particle size (220 ± 60 nm) and high rutile conversion (98.1%) was synthesized from TBFS. The results will help to optimize the process for producing TiO2 pigment from TBFS and provide new insights into the structure regulation of TiO2 materials.

Abstract:Titanium carbide has been widely considered as a stabilizer to alleviate the serious chemical activity of Ti-based alloys at elevated temperatures. However, a reverse effect may also take place: we show the sub-stoichiometry characteristic of δ-Ti x C can facilitate the oxidation kinetics of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy to a significant extent. In particular, oxygen atoms tend to preferentially occupy the vacant carbon sites within the Ti 2 C phase, giving rise to a higher oxidation rate. The intrinsic mechanisms were understood with a combination of ab initio simulation and experimental validation.

Abstract:Though black titania has been widely investigated, the influence of crystal phase during the reduction process remains unknown. In the present study, we found that the rutile phase is preferentially reduced over anatase from detailed experimental investigations and a comprehensive understanding of selective breaking of Ti-O bonds in surfaced TiO6 octahedral motifs. This work may inspire an encouraging understanding in designing highly efficient black material for solar harvesting.

Abstract:The conventional method for synthesizing Ti2SC depends on the reaction between TiS and TiC, which requires the utilization of costly Ti, TiC, or TiS2 powders. Utilizing TiO2 as the raw material for the synthesis of Ti2SC enables the cost-effective preparation of this compound. However, the optimization of the TiO2/C/XnSm (sulfides) system is of utmost importance when aiming to synthesize Ti2SC through carbothermal-sulfurization of TiO2, as the formation temperature of TiS and TiC greatly depends on the XnSm. In this study, the identification of the thermodynamically dominant region for the formation of TiS and TiC in the TiO2/C/XnSm systems was conducted by utilizing various sulfides (63 types). Considering factors such as the challenges associated with removing by-products, accessibility, and toxicity, FeS2 was ultimately chosen as a highly promising candidate. Thanks to the low melting point of FeS2, Ti3O5, the preliminary carbothermal reduction product of TiO2, has achieved rapid-deep deoxidation and phase reconstruction processes in the molten phase. Meanwhile, unlike the conventional solid-solid sintering reaction, which often results in residual reactants that are challenging to eliminate. This novel one-step phase transformation process that occurs in the molten phase exhibits minimal impurity phases, apart from the by-product Fe. Ti2SC with a purity greater than 99 wt% was obtained when the TiO2/C/FeS2 was pickled to remove Fe after sintering at 1600 °C for 5 min. This work will provide the theoretical basis and a new path for the low-cost preparation of sulfur-containing MAX phases.
