Abstract:Li x Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 2, as the cathode materials for lithium-ion battery, were prepared from the precursors, Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 (OH) 2, which were synthesized by the controlled crystallization technology. The experiments of energy diffraction spectroscopy showed that the elements of Co and Ni were distributed uniformly in the active materials. Because the elements of Co and Ni have been distributed uniformly in the M layer of M(OH) 2 during the controlled crystallization process, the long-term calcining process was avoided, when the recomposing process of diffusion happened in the common solid solutions. The microphotographs of SEM indicated the change of microcosmic morphology. The results of XRD proved that the Li x Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 2 were single phase with α-NaFeO 2 layered structure, and have no other phases. The crystal lattices of a and c underwent a process from small to big and then to small, and c/a underwent a process from big to small and then to big.

Abstract:Ni-rich Li[NixCoyMn1-x-y]O-2 (x >= 0.8) layered oxides are the most promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high reversible capacity of over 200 mAh g(-1). Unfortunately, the anisotropic properties associated with the alpha-NaFeO2 structured crystal grains result in poor rate capability and insufficient cycle life. To address these issues, a micrometer-sized Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 secondary cathode material consisting of radially aligned single-crystal primary particles is proposed and synthesized. Concomitant with this unique crystallographic texture, all the exposed surfaces are active {010} facets, and 3D Li+ ion diffusion channels penetrate straightforwardly from surface to center, remarkably improving the Li+ diffusion coefficient. Moreover, coordinated charge-discharge volume change upon cycling is achieved by the consistent crystal orientation, significantly alleviating the volume-change-induced intergrain stress. Accordingly, this material delivers superior reversible capacity (203.4 mAh g(-1) at 3.0-4.3 V) and rate capability (152.7 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 1000 mA g(-1)). Further, this structure demonstrates excellent cycling stability without any degradation after 300 cycles. The anisotropic morphology modulation provides a simple, efficient, and scalable way to boost the performance and applicability of Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials.

Abstract:According to the tetrahedral phase diagram of LiNiO₂–LiCoO₂–LiMnO₂–Li₂MnO₃, a series of Li₁.₂(Ni₀.₂Mn₀.₆)ₓ(Co₀.₄Mn₀.₄)y(Ni₀.₄Mn₀.₄)₁₋ₓ₋yO₂ (0 ≤ x + y ≤ 1) have been designed to explore new Li-rich solid solution cathode materials. The effects of Li₁.₂Ni₀.₂Mn₀.₆O₂, Li₁.₂Co₀.₄Mn₀.₄O₂ and Li₁.₂Ni₀.₄Mn₀.₄O₂ content in solid solutions on structure and electrochemical properties are investigated. Micro-sized spherical or ellipsoidal precursors are first prepared via a carbonate co-precipitation route. After calcination with lithium sources, all samples are indexed to a typical layered structure with an R3m space group as detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD). It is found that the introduction of Co can improve the tap density. However, these Co referred samples reveal lower discharge specific capacities and inferior cycle life. For these Co-free materials with high Ni content, for instance Li₁.₂Ni₀.₃Mn₀.₅O₂, although low capacity is observed in the initial cycle, a large capacity of above 250 mA h g⁻¹ is achieved after about 10 cycles. Importantly, the activated Li₁.₂Ni₀.₃Mn₀.₅O₂ material still delivers a high capacity of over 230 mA h g⁻¹ after 70 cycles, displaying superior cycle stability. These results may be instructive in designing and exploring high performance cathode materials for advanced LIBs.

Abstract:The cathode material LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 with excellent electrochemical performance was prepared successfully by a rheological phase method. The materials obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and charge-discharge tests. The results showed that both calcination temperatures and atmosphere are very important factors affecting the structure and electrochemical performance of LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 material. The sample calcinated at 800 °C under O2 atmosphere displayed well-crystallized particle morphology, a highly ordered layered structure with low defects, and excellent electrochemical performance. In the voltage range of 2.8–4.3 V, it delivered capacity of 188.9 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C and 130.4 mAh g−1 at 5 C, respectively. The capacity retention also reached 93.9% after 50 cycles at 0.5 C. All the results suggest that LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Spherical Ni xCo (1-2x)Mn x(OH) 2 (x = 0.333, 0.4, 0.416, 0.45) precursors with Co concentration-gradient were prepared by co-precipitation from sulfate solutions using NaOH and NH 4OH as precipitation and complexing agents. Then, well-ordered spherical LiNi xCo (1-2x)Mn xO 2 was synthesized by sintering the mixture of as-prepared precursor and Li 2CO 3 at 950 °C for 16 h in air. EDXS results indicated that the concentration of cobalt decreased gradually inside out of the spherical precursor particle, and it was uniform in spherical LiNi xCo (1-2x)Mn xO 2 particle obtained by sintering with Li 2CO 3. According to Rietveld refinement of XRD patterns, the LiNi xCo (1-2x)Mn xO 2 synthesized from Co gradient precursor showed lower degree of cation disorder than that prepared from conventional precursor. The well-ordered LiNi xCo (1-2x)Mn xO 2 from Co gradient precursor delivered much better high-rate capability than conventional one. The decrease of cation disorder of LiNi xCo (1-2x)Mn xO 2 is attributed to the cobalt-rich in core of the precursor particles. Both abundant Co 3+ and Li + can restrain cation mixing effectively. Since Li + needs long time to reach core during calcining, cobalt-rich in core of the precursor particle is very important for restraining cation mixing. Concentration-gradient precursor is helpful to prepare well-ordered LiNi xCo (1-2x)Mn xO 2 with good high-rate capability, and the total content of expensive and toxic cobalt does not need to be increased. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Nanocrystalline LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was synthesized by a sol-gel method. Thermal history of the gel was analyzed by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Powders X-ray diffraction (XRD) proved the formation of layered alpha-NaFeO2 hexagonal lattice. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that original particles were of the size range of 200-300 nm. The discharge capacity was 183 mAh/g in the first cycle with 87.5% capacity retention in 30 cycles at C/10 rate in 3.0-4.5 V potential range. Abstract:Nickel-rich layered oxides have drawn sustainable attentions for lithium ion batteries owing to their higher theoretical capacities and lower cost. However, nickel-rich layered oxides also have exposed several defects for commercial application, such as uncontrollable ordered layered structure, which leads to higher energy barrier for Li+ diffusion. In addition, suffering from structural mutability, the bulk nickel-rich cathode materials likely trigger overall volumetric variation and intergranular cracks, thus obstructing the lithium ion diffusion path and shortening the service life of the whole device. Herein, we report well-ordered layered LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 submicron spheroidal particles via an optimized co-precipitation and investigated as LIBs cathodes for high-performance lithium storage. The as-fabricated LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 delivers high initial capacity of 228 mAh g–1, remarkable energy density of 866 Wh kg–1, rapid Li ion diffusion coefficient (10–9 cm2 s–1) and low voltage decay. The remarkable electrochemical performance should be ascribed to the well-ordered layered structure and uniform submicron spheroidal particles, which enhance the structural stability and ameliorate strain relaxation via reducing the parcel size and shortening Li-ion diffusion distance. This work anticipatorily provides an inspiration to better design particle morphology for structural stability and rate capability in electrochemistry energy storage devices.

Abstract:The layered Li-rich Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 cathode material is successfully synthesized via an optimized sol–gel method. With oxalic acid instead of citric acid as the chelating agent, the amount of chelating agent used in this experiment is only 36% of the traditional weight. Segmented sintering method is adopted to decrease the calcination temperature and reduce the calcination time. X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to characterize the structure and micromorphology of the material. Meanwhile, charge–discharge test, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are employed to explore its electrochemical performance. Our results demonstrate that Li[Li0.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13]O2 electrode delivers a high reversible capacity of 277.3mAhg−1 and keeps excellent capacity retention of 98.4% after 50 cycles when tested at a 0.1C rate within the potential range of 2.0–4.8V at room temperature.

Abstract:Octahedral LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 with excellent electrochemical properties prepared by the solvothermal or sol-gel method under harsh conditions is expensive. Therefore, preparing octahedral LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 with good granularity by a more cost-effective and large-scale method is significant for :its industrial applications. In this study, spherical agglomerations of octahedral Co-doped LiNi0.5Co4xMn1.5-3xO4 with micrometer sizes were synthesized by a continuous coprecipitation process. Compared to conventional spherical LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4, the spherical agglomeration of octahedral LiNi0.5Co0.08Mn1.44O4 with a larger specific surface area and pore volume was well. crystallized without any impurities and exhibited a high discharge capacity of about 110 mAh.g(-1) at a rate of 2C and a high reversible capacity of 99.9% after the rate test (in which rates of 0.1C, 0.5C, 1C, and 2C were tested sequentially for 10 cycles). Remarkably, the discharge capacity of the prepared LiNi0.5Co0.08Mn1.44O4 exhibited a negligible decrement after MO cycles at 1C, displaying great potential industrial application for 5 V lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Cathode material Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3]O-2 for lithium-ion batteries with layered hexagonal structure was successfully synthesized in sol-gel way. The influences of calcination temperature (from 700 degrees to 1000 degrees C) on the structure and electrochemical behaviors of Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3]O-2 were extensively investigated. The results of XRD show that all samples are isostructural with alpha-NaFeO2 with a space group R-3m. XPS analysis shows that the oxidation states of Co and Mn were Co3+ and Mn4+ respectively, while Ni exists as Ni2+ and Ni3+. The charge-discharge experiments show that the sample calcined at 850 degrees C delivers 194.8mAh/g in the first cycle at C/5 rate in 2.5-4.3V potential range.

Abstract:The Na-doped layered Li1.2-xNaxMn0.534Ni0.133Co0.133O2 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15) cathode materials with porous spherical structure for lithium-ion batteries have been successfully prepared via a facile co-precipitation method. The dual Li+/Na+ transport system is Li1.2-xNaxMn0.534Ni0.133Co0.133O2 cathode materials companying with dual Li+/Na+ electrolyte, which exhibits an improved initial charge-discharge efficiency, cycling stability and rate capability, compared with pristine Li1.2Mn0.534Ni0.133Co0.133O2. Electrochemical results verify that Li1.1Na0.1Mn0.534Ni0.133Co0.133O2 delivers the initial charge/discharge capacity of 329.68/277.86 mAh g(-1) with improved initial coulombic efficiency of 84.28% at 0.1C, and shows good cycling performance with a capacity retention of 76.5% after 100 cycles at 1C much higher than 37.9% of the pristine sample. Such outstanding performance of Li1.2-xNaxMn0.534Ni0.133Co0.133O2 is mainly attributed to: on the one hand, the small particle size and porous structure are helpful to increase the electrochemical active surface, shorten dual Li+/Na+ diffusion pathway, thus enhancing the energy storage properties. On the other hand, the design of dual Li+/Na+ transport system enables to enlarge interlayer, stabilize crystal structure and exert mutual diffusion or transportation of Li+ and Na+.

Abstract:Spherical LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was successfully prepared by controlled crystallization. The preparation started with the spherical coprecipitate of Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3CO3 from NiSO4, CoSO4, MnSO4, NH4HCO3, and NH3·H2O, followed by pyrolysis of Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3CO3 at 600°C for 3 h. The X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the homogeneous cubic (Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)3O4 was obtained after the pyrolysis. Spherical LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was obtained by sintering of the mixture of as-obtained (Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)3O4 and LiOH·H2O at 900°C for 6 h in air. As-prepared spherical LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 presented initial discharge capacity of 162.9 mA h g−1 and capacity retention of 98% at 50th cycle.

Abstract:The layered Li[Li0.20Ni0.128Co0.136Mn0.536]O2 power was synthesized by reacting precursor M(OH)2(M=Ni,Co,Mn) prepared by co-precipitation with LiOH·H2O through high temperature solid-state method.The surface of cathode material was coated with Al2O3.The XRD,SEM and electrochemical measurements were used to characterize the structure,morphology and electrochemical performance of the product.The XRD results show that the as-prepared Li[Li0.20Ni0.128Co0.136Mn0.536]O2 has a-NaFeO2 layered structure.Al2O3 coating does not cause structure change.The SEM images show that the particles after coating have similar shape and size to the precursor.At 0.1 C rate,the discharge specific capacity is 210.2 mAh/g at the first cycle and in the 80th cycle,it is 153.4 mAh/g.After Al2O3 coating,the discharge specific capacity reaches 220.5 mAh/g and remains 211.5 mAh/g after 80 cycles.It shows that Al2O3 coating improves the cycling performance significantly.

Abstract:To reduce cost while maintaining the specific capacity of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathode, we systematically explore the effect of Ni substitution for Co on the structure, electrochemical performance, and thermal stability of NCM523, LiNi0.55Co0.15Mn0.3O2 (NCM5.5:1.5:3), and LiNi0.6Co0.1Mn0.3O2 (NCM613) cathodes in this study. These materials were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, particle-size analysis, Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, charge-discharge testing, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicate that a decrease in the Co content of NCM523 lead to an increase in the voltage platform and discharge capacity, which contributes to the improvement of the energy density. However, the initial efficiency, cycle performance, rate capability, and low-temperature performance was found to slightly decrease. This behavior can be attributed to the lower Co content yielding higher degrees of Li+/Ni2+ disordering, higher resistance, lower Li+ diffusivity, and higher activation energy (Ea). Moreover, as the Co content decreased, the thermal stability of NCM523 was slightly decreased. Considering both cost and performance, NCM5.5:1.5:3 and NCM613 materials deserve to be considered as the preferred next-generation materials.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Microspherical Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 Through Carbon Dioxides-assisted Co-precipitation Method for Lithium-ion Battery

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered electrode materials are of interest as a promising candidate of cathodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their excellent electrochemical properties. The electrochemical performance of these materials is mainly regulated by preparation conditions during synthesis and calcination process. Here, microspherical Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (LMNCO) particles are synthesized through steady pH value control with carbon dioxides bubbling method in co-precipitation process using a simple reactor. SEM images present that CP-LMNCO sample prepared through the assistance of carbon dioxides has spherical particle morphology, while sample (TP-LMNCO) without carbon dioxides assistance shows large nanoparticles agglomeration. The CP-LMNCO electrode demonstrates superior electrochemical performance, which exhibits capacity retention of 97.76% after 100 cycles compared with only 81.94% for TP-LMNCO electrode at 1C (250mAg−1). Even at a higher current density (5C), the CP-LMNCO electrode shows reversible capacity up to 105.4mA h g−1. The remarkably improved electrochemical performance of CP-LMNCO electrode is ascribed to spherical morphology with small surface area which decreases side reactions with electrolyte during cycling and smaller primary sizes which reduce lithium ion (Li+) diffusion distance. Furthermore, the synthesis of spherical materials using metal sulfate with high concentration (up to 5M) as starting agents are attempted under carbon dioxides assisted conditions, and as-prepared materials also show improved performance.
