Abstract:The interfacial effect between different metallic active centers can greatly influence their synergistic effect, further affecting their catalytic performance. Therefore, Co-Ni bimetal based ordered mesoporous metal oxide catalysts with different interfacial properties have been prepared by a one-pot evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) strategy as well as an incipient impregnation method. The obtained catalysts with large specific surface areas, large pore volumes, and narrow pore size distributions were investigated as catalysts toward CO2 methanation. It was found that the Co-Ni bimetal catalyst synthesized by the one-pot EISA strategy displayed a much higher catalytic activity in CO2 conversion than the counterparts prepared by the incipient impregnation method, especially in a low reaction temperature region. The reason for this could be attributed to the difference in their interfacial properties based on XPS and H-2-TPR characterization studies, which greatly affected the catalytic activities. Besides, all the investigated catalysts showed excellent catalytic stabilities without deactivation after 50 h time on stream owing to the confinement effect of the mesoporous framework and mesoporous channel, which could effectively suppress the thermal sintering of the metallic active centers. Therefore, the Co-Ni based bimetal ordered mesoporous catalysts constructed by the one-pot EISA strategy could be considered as a potential efficient catalyst candidate for CO2 methanation.
Effects of Pore Structure on Methanol Selectivity in Carbon Monoxide Hydrogenation

Abstract:Cu/ZnO/Al2O3catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation method using different binders under various pressures, and the micro-structure and catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts were studied by TEM and BET. The results show that the internal diffusion resistance increases with the increase of pelleting force, which causes the decrease of CO conversion and the increase of methanol selectivity. The reaction mechanism study and the comparison of the mean free path of CO and H2 under reaction condition show that the change of pore structure has different diffusion effects on each gas. Therefore, the reaction route was varied when the H2 concentration near active sites decreases, and the change of the reaction rate is also affected, which leads to the change of methanol selectivity. Experiments using binders with different molecular weights verified this mechanism.
Effect of support texture properties on Ni-Fe/γ-Al_2O_3 catalyst structure and catalytic performance for CO methanation

Abstract:Ni-Fe/γ-Al2 O3 catalysts with four different γ-Al2 O3 supports were prepared by incipient impregnation and characterized by XRD,BET and H2-TPR.Catalytic behaviors of the catalysts for low-temperature CO methanation were investigated in a slurry reactor.The results showed that the surface texture properties of γ-Al2 O3 supports had great impact on distribution of Ni reactive species and methanation activity.Moderate specific surface area(192m2/g) and pore size(5.8 nm) of γ-Al2 O3 was favor for the dispersion of active component,resulting in a higher amount of β-NiO and smaller Ni crystal particle size,which increased active sites,thus having better methanation activity and stability,with a CO conversion of 97.0% and a CH4 selectivity of 89.0%.However,the catalyst prepared by high silica γ-Al2 O3 support with larger specific surface area contained a great amount of α-NiO,which was inclined to agglomerate in the reduction process,resulting in low catalytic activity and stability,with a CO initial conversion of 85.5% and rapid deactivation after 17 hours.

Abstract:Photothermal CO2 methanation reaction represents a promising strategy for addressing CO2-related environmental issues. The presence of efficient tandem catalytic sites with a localized high-temperature is an effective pathway to enhance the performance of CO2 methanation. Here the bimetallic RuCo nanoparticles anchored on ZrO2 fiber cotton (RuCo/ZrO2) as a photothermal catalyst for CO2 methanation are prepared. A significant photothermal CO2 methanation performance with optimal CH4 selectivity (99%) and rate (169.93 mmol g(cat)(-1) h(-1)) is achieved. The photothermal energy of the RuCo bimetallic nanoparticles, confined by the infrared insulation and low thermal conductivity of the ZrO2 fiber cotton (ZrO2 FC), provides a localized high-temperature. In situ spectroscopic experiments on RuCo/ZrO2, Ru/ZrO2, and Co/ZrO2 indicate that the construction of tandem catalytic sites, where the Co site favors CO2 conversion to CO while incorporating Ru enhances CO* adsorption for subsequent hydrogenation, results in a higher selectivity toward CH4. This work opens a new insight into designing tandem catalysts with a photothermal confinement effect in CO2 methanation reaction.
Influence of the Microstructure of Ni–Co Bimetallic Catalyst on CO Methanation

Abstract:Bimetallic catalysts have been widely used for CO methanation because of their superior activity and stability. Herein, Ni–Co bimetallic catalysts supported on SiO2, xNi–yCo/SiO2 (x and y refer to the loading of Ni and Co), are fabricated for CO methanation. For 6Ni–9Co/SiO2, CO conversion is higher than other catalysts with only Ni and Co or both Ni and Co of different ratios. The stability of the 6Ni–9Co/SiO2 is much better in comparison with the 15Ni/SiO2 and 15Co/SiO2. The diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy study shows that for both 6Ni–9Co/SiO2 and 15Ni/SiO2, CHO is generated first. However, the bimetallic Ni–Co catalyst follows a distinctive reaction pathway subsequently: the C–O bond of CHO breaks first and then CH hydrogenates to form CH4. However, for 15Ni/SiO2, the CHO intermediate first reacts with *H to form CHOH, then C–O breaks, and CH4 is formed. This work well reveals the relationship between the performance of bimetallic catalysts and their reaction mechanism for CO methanation and sheds light on the further development of other bimetallic catalysts for various applications in catalysis.

Abstract:Designing and tailoring the fine structure of bimetallic nanoparticles is an essential and effective way to boost the catalytic properties. Herein, two types of Ni-Co alloys are generated on SiO2 including non-homogeneous or homogeneous form for CO methanation. The formation of homogeneous Ni-Co alloy originates from the strong interaction between Ni and Co and a small amount of CoO. Compared with non-homogeneous alloy, the homogeneous Ni-Co alloy exhibits superior CO conversion and CH4 selectivity below 380 °C, and is stable for 100 h long-term test at 400 °C in CO methanation. The electron enrichment of Ni and Co of homogeneous alloy contributes to CO dissociation, hydrogen spillover, and CO2 adsorption, which facilitates CH4 formation and the removal of deposited carbon species. This work provides a new clue for fabricating bimetallic catalysts and revealing the relationship between the fine structure of Ni-Co alloy and their catalytic performances.

Abstract:The Ni based catalysts have been considered as potential candidates for the CO2 methanation owing to the low cost. However, the poor low-temperature catalytic activities limit their large-scale industrial application. In order to address this challenge, a series of Co-Ni bimetal doped ordered mesoporous Al2O3 materials have been designed and fabricated via the one-pot evaporation induced self-assembly strategy and employed as the catalysts for CO2 methanation. It is found that the large specific surface areas (up to 260.0 m(2/)g), big pore volumes (up to 0.59 cm(3)/g), and narrow pore size distributions of these catalysts have been successfully retained after 700 degrees C calcination. The Co and Ni species are homogenously distributed among the Al2O3 matrix due to the unique advantage of the one-pot synthesis strategy. The strong interaction between metal and mesoporous framework have been formed and the severely thermal sintering of the metallic Co-Ni active centers can be successfully inhibited during the processes of catalyst reduction and 50 h CO2 methanation reaction. More importantly, the synergistic effect between Co and Ni can greatly enhance the low-temperature catalytic activity by coordinating the activation of H-2 and CO2, prominently decreasing the activation energy toward CO2 methanation. As a result, their low-temperature activities are evidently promoted. Furthermore, the effect of the Co/(Co + Ni) molar percentage ratio on the catalytic property has been also systematically investigated over these catalysts. It is found that only the catalyst with appropriate ratio (20.0%) behaves the optimum catalytic performances. Abstract:Co‐Ni bimetal‐doped ordered mesoporous Al2O3 composite oxides with different Co/(Co+Ni) ratios were designed and fabricated by a one‐pot evaporation‐induced self‐assembly method. The obtained materials, which had an ordered mesostructure and outstanding thermal stability, were investigated as catalysts for the CO2 reforming of CH4. The effects of the Co/(Co+Ni) molar ratios and ordered mesostructure on the catalytic performances were investigated systematically. The ordered mesoporous Co‐Ni bimetallic catalysts exhibited both higher catalytic activities and better anticoke properties than the corresponding monometallic materials because of the Co‐Ni synergistic effect. Furthermore, the ordered mesostructure could promote the catalytic performances significantly by providing gaseous reactants with enough accessible metallic active centers and stabilizing the metallic nanoparticles through the confinement effect of the mesoporous framework. As a result, these mesoporous Co‐Ni bimetallic catalysts had more enhanced catalytic properties and anticoke ability than traditional supported catalysts toward the CO2 reforming of CH4, which promises a series of potential catalyst candidates.

Abstract:The Ni monometallic catalyst usually exhibits poor CO2 methanation activity, although its low cost is beneficial for conducting large-scale application in industries. Herein, the transition metal (Mn, Fe, Co, and Cu)-doped Ni-based bimetallic catalysts loaded on mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 solid solution were prepared to address this challenge in CO2 methanation. We found that the Co-doped catalysts exhibited much higher activity than the corresponding counterparts. Therefore, the relationship between the Co/Ni ratio and activity was further investigated to acquire the optimum ratio. The obtained catalysts were characterized by various measurements. The results demonstrated that doping the second transition metals could promote Ni dispersion and strengthen metal-support interaction. Resultantly, serious agglomeration of the metallic active sites was successfully inhibited. Besides, we also carried out the in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy and online temperature-programmed surface reaction of CO2 methanation to study the possible reaction intermediates and pathways over the Ni-Co bimetallic catalysts. A dynamic study was also conducted to further study the effect of the doped transition metals on the apparent activation energies. Besides, the present research also revealed that the Ni-Co synergistic effect significantly improved the low-temperature activity by regulating the reaction intermediates. As a result, the Ni-Co bimetallic catalysts supported by mesoporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 solid solution were considered as a series of promising and efficient low-temperature CO2 methanation catalysts.

Abstract:Interfaces between active metal and metal oxide in a heterogenous catalyst often play an important role in catalysis. In this work, we intentionally synthesized a series of inverse CeO2-Cr2O3/Ni model catalysts with the formation of controlled CeO2-Ni and Cr2O3-Ni interfacial structures and investigated the roles of the oxide-metal interfaces in CO2 methanation performance through excluding the normal support effect. Experimental and DFT calculation results reveal that the formate pathway tends to occur on the catalyst with only CeO2-Ni interfaces. The Cr2O3-Ni interface formed after introducing Cr oxide alters the nearby CeO2-Ni interface by electron transfer through Ni, which brings an additional reaction pathway (CO pathway) on CeO2-Cr2O3/Ni. Furthermore, it shows a relatively lower CO2 absorption energy and activation energy barrier for CO2 dissociation to CO at the Cr2O3-Ni interface, favorable for CO2 activation and further hydrogenation, thus leading to excellent low-temperature activity.

Abstract:The Ni-based catalysts were widely investigated as the catalysts toward CO2 methanation reaction because of their availabilities. However, compared with the noble metal based catalysts, the design and exploitation of Ni-based catalysts with outstanding low-temperature catalytic activities is still a big challenge. In order to solve this problem, the highly dispersed Ni catalysts had been facilely prepared by employing the basic amine functionalized mesoporous MFI nanosponge zeolite as the support. The functionalized amine group could induce the precisely regioselective precipitation of the Ni precursor in the mesoporous channels and the highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles were obtained. Besides, the La2O3 and MgO had been used to modify the surface basicity to further promote the low-temperature catalytic activities of the Ni-based catalysts. These catalysts were systematically measured by XRD, N-2 physisorption, STEM, XPS, H-2-TPR, and CO2-TPD. It was observed that the metallic Ni nanoparticles were homogenously distributed among the mesoporous channels. Furthermore, the La2O3 and MgO modification could obviously promote the surface basicity of the catalysts, which intensified the CO2 adsorption and activation. Thus, their apparent activation energies of CO2 methanation evidently decreased and their low-temperature activities were greatly promoted. Besides, it was also found that the thermal agglomeration of the Ni nanoparticles could be successfully inhibited via the confinement effect of the amine functionalized mesoporous channels, interpreting their excellent catalytic stabilities toward CO2 methanation.
CO2 methanation over Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts: The effects of support morphology and La2O3 modification

Abstract:A series of Ni-based catalysts supported on the ZSM-5 with different morphologies were facilely synthesized and employed as the CO2 methanation catalysts. The achieved catalysts were systematically characterized by various techniques. Besides, the in-situ DRIFTS was also performed to investigate the intermediates of the CO2 methanation reaction process. It was found that the catalyst with the short b-axis ZSM-5 support displayed much higher activity than other counterparts supported on nano ZSM-5 and commercial ZSM-5. The possible reason for this could be attributed to the unique morphology of short b-axis ZSM-5 zeolite with large external surface area (489.7 m(2)/g). In addition, it was also found the La doped catalyst displayed much higher low-temperature activity (200-300 C) and CH4 selectivity than the pristine counterpart without modification. Resultantly, the catalyst with both the short b-axis ZSM-5 support and La2O3 modification displayed the optimum catalytic performance. Therefore, the morphology of the support and the selection of modifier were considered as the important concerns when designing and synthesizing Ni based CO2 methanation catalysts with highly-developed performances.

Abstract:The interaction between metal and support is critical for CO2 methanation reaction over supported Ni catalysts. This work provides a modification strategy using surface carbonate species for promoting the catalytic performances of lanthana-supported Ni catalyst. The carbonate-modified Ni/La2O2CO3 catalyst displays a superior catalytic activity, stability, and CO tolerance in CO2 methanation reactions in comparison with Ni/La2O3 catalyst. The structure of Ni-La2O2CO3 interfaces is verified to be stable against thermal decomposition and reduction reaction, determining catalytic roles through specific metal-carbonate interaction. The medium-strength surface basicity promotes the capability of CO2 chemisorption. The carbonate-modified interfaces facilitate the formation of monodentate and bidentate formates as the reaction intermediates. These species are highly reactive for further transformation into CH4 even in the presence of CO poison, which is benefited to both methanation activity and anti-CO ability.

Abstract:Ni-based catalysts are the most promising catalysts for CO2 methanation. The development of catalysts with low-temperature activity could bring significant energy and environmental benefits. In this work, the hydrogenation of CO2 to methane was studied on Ni-M/γ-Al2O3 (M = Fe, Co, or Mn) bimetallic catalysts. The optimum reaction was obtained using Ni-Mn/γ-Al2O3 (CO2 conversion: 85%, CH4 selectivity: 99%, 280 °C). In situ FTIR studies revealed the excellent performance of Ni-Mn/γ-Al2O3, which lowers the required reaction temperature. Based on in situ FTIR studies, CO2 methanation proceeded over three intermediates on the catalysts: bicarbonate → carbonate → formate → methane. The second metal (Co or Mn) promoted the dispersion of both Ni and itself and improved the ability of Ni to crack H2. And introduced more oxygen vacancies to strengthen the basicity of surrounding O2− on the surface of the catalysts. In effect, the number of carbonate active sites could be increased accordingly, thereby improving the adsorption capacity for CO2.

Abstract:The study of the process and mechanism of CO 2 activation and the development of low-temperature, high-activity and selective catalysts for CO 2 methanation are current research hotspots. In this paper, a series of Ni/Al 2 O 3 catalysts with different Co contents were prepared by using layered double hydroxides (LDHs) as precursors for low-temperature CO 2 methanation, and the incorporation of Co promoted the electron transfer from Ni to Co, which facilitated the adsorption and activation of CO 2 and H 2 . The spent catalyst still maintained the layered structure with no significant change in the metal particle size, indicating that the addition of Co significantly improved the long-term stability of the catalysts. The CO 2 conversion was 55.5 % and STY CH4 was 148.0 mmol·g cat −1 h −1 at 200 °C, 2.0 MPa and 1000 h −1 . The in situ DRIFTS experiments showed that the addition of Co accelerated the conversion of the reaction intermediates and promoted the generation of methane.

Abstract:Monolithic catalysts meet the needs of practical application compared with powder catalysts. In this work, we constructed a Ni-based monolithic catalyst (Ni/SAB-15/WWC) by in situ growth of rod-like mesoporous SBA-15 in the microchannels of wood carbon. The small Ni-based nanoparticles (-5.3 nm) were uniformly dispersed into the mesoporous channels via a post-loading method. The monolithic Ni/SAB-15/WWC catalyst with a multilevel porous structure could provide a laminar gas flow on the surface of Ni active sites, increasing the lowtemperature activity and high-temperature durability of CO 2 methanation. The Ni/SAB-15/WWC with low Ni loading (-2%) displayed superior CO 2 methanation catalytic performance in terms of low-temperature activity and CH 4 selectivity compared with the powder Ni/SAB-15 with high Ni loading (-15 %). The combination of wood carbon and mesoporous materials is an innovative strategy for the design monolithic catalysts with low metal loading and excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:xNiyCo/SBA-15-CD (x + y = 5%, x/y = 0/5-5/0, mass ratio) catalysts, prepared by a beta-cyclodextrin (CD) modified impregnation method, were characterized and employed in the carbon dioxide reforming of methane. Ni and Co interacted strongly with each other, and the Co species dissolved into the NiO lattice during the preparation process. The new H-2 consumption peaks in the H-2-temperature programmed reduction (TPR) should be attributed to the reduction of NixCoyO, which was the precursor of the Ni-Co alloy. The lattice parameters of the metal particles on reduced and spent catalysts followed Vegard's law, which confirmed the formation of the alloy. The TOFs of the bimetallic catalysts were greater than the monometallic catalysts and the stabilities of the bimetallic catalysts with Ni/Co = 2.5/2.5-4.5/0.5 were better than the monometallic catalysts. The synergistic effect of Ni and Co, the addition of beta-CD, the sequence of impregnation and the confinement effect of the ordered mesoporous structure contributed to the better catalytic performance. Among the bimetallic catalysts, 4.5Ni0.5Co and 3Ni2Co showed the best stability. The better stability of 4.5Ni0.5Co can be attributed to a Co-enriched surface segregation structure, whereas the highest proportion of the Ni-Co alloy (precursor) in 3Ni2Co should be the primary reason to its better performance.
