Abstract:The layer-structured perovskite Bi4Ti3O12 is a well-known lead-free ferroelectric and piezoelectric material with potential applications in both non-volatile memory devices and high-temperature sensors. In this paper, high oxide ion conductivity is observed for modified Bi4Ti3O12-based ceramics, and their associated oxygen transport mechanism is investigated systemically. Impedance data and dc conductivity as a function of oxygen partial pressure reveal that Bi4Ti3O12 shows mixed oxygen ion and hole conduction. Bi deficiency in the starting composition leads to no change in the conduction mechanism and no significant increase in bulk conductivity (sigma(b)). Interestingly, high oxide ion conductivity is achieved with further Mg2+ acceptor doping at the B site. The optimum composition with a nominal formula of Bi3.88Ti2.92Mg0.08O11.74 exhibits a high sigma(b) of similar to 10(-2) S cm(-1) and a high ionic transport number (t(ion)) of similar to 0.92 at 650 degrees C, which are well comparable to those of leading solid oxide electrolyte materials. Furthermore, this composition shows extremely low conductivity degradation at 450 degrees C, 600 degrees C and 700 degrees C. The present work opens up new horizons for Bi4Ti3O12 as an oxide ion conductor in addition to ferroelectric- and piezoelectric-based applications.

Enhanced low electric-field energy-storage performance in Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3-Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O-3 ceramics

Abstract:Perovskite (1-x)Ba0.9Sr0.1TiO3-xBi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O-3 (BST-BiMT-x) ceramics were prepared by sintering the corresponding powders synthesized by combining of solid state reaction method with citrate sol-gel and self-combustion techniques. Submicron grains morphology, high density and large resistivity were obtained in the BST-BiMT-x ceramics. In addition, the BST-BiMT-0.1 and BST-BiMT-0.075 ceramics exhibit ferroelectric hysteresis loops with slim shape which lead to enhanced energy-storage properties. The energy-storage density of these two ceramics increases almost linearly with increasing the applied electric filed. The energy-storage density and efficiency at 25 kV/cm of the BST-BiMT-0.1 and BST-BiMT-0.075 ceramics sintered at 1200 degrees C are 141.2 mJ/cm(3 )and 79.3%, and 158.1 mJ/cm(3) and 76.7%, respectively, surpassing many recently reported values for ferroelectric/antiferroelectric ceramics. The enhanced energy-storage density and efficiency under low electric field can be attributed to the slim polarization-electric field hysteresis loops, high density accompanied by submicron grains morphology and pure perovskite structure.

Abstract:(BixBa1-x)(Znx/2Ti1-x/2)O-3 [xBi(Zn1/2Ti1/2)O-3-(1-x)BaTiO3, x <= 0.30] solid solution ceramics with a pure perovskite structure were synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method. A change in symmetry from tetragonal to cubic was observed as the mole fraction of Bi(Zn1/2Ti1/2)O-3 increased. All compositions show a dielectric anomaly over the temperature range 30-120 degrees C. In the tetragonal phase region, the temperature Tm of the maximum dielectric constant decreases with increasing Bi(Zn1/2Ti1/2)O-3 content. In the cubic phase area, the compositions show general dielectric relaxation of linear dielectrics, and T-m increases with increasing Bi(Zn1/2Ti1/2)O-3 content. The phase transition, dielectric and ferroelectric properties of (BixBa1-x)(Znx/2Ti1-x/2)O-3 ceramics are sensitive to nano-regional chemistries.

Abstract:By the conventional mixed oxide method (1−x)Bi(Mg1/2Ti1/2)O3–xBaTiO3 ((1−x)BMT–xBT, x = 0.2−1.0) ceramics were prepared. For x ≤ 0.4, a bismuth‐rich phase was observed beside the perovskite phase. For 0.5 ≤ x ≤ 0.92 ceramics, all the compositions belong to the pseudocubic phase, while the tetragonal phases were formed when x ≥ 0.94. With the increase of BT content, a change from a relaxor‐like behavior to a normal ferroelectric behavior was observed, while the change of Tmax is in the form of “U” curve. Furthermore, stable dielectric permittivity (1500–3000) and low losses (tan δ < 2%) were obtained in the 0.4 ≤ x ≤ 0.6 ceramics in the temperature range 200°C–400°C, indicating a potential for high‐temperature applications.
Intermediate-temperature conductivity of B-site doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-based lead-free ferroelectric ceramics

Abstract:Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) based oxide-ion conductor ceramics have great potential applications in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and oxygen sensors. Na0.5Bi0.49Ti1−xMgxO3−δ ceramics with x=0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.08 were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. XRD measurement and SEM analysis revealed the formation of pure perovskite structures without secondary phase. MgO doping greatly decreased the sintering temperature and inhibited grain growth. AC impedance spectroscopy measurement was adopted to measure the total conductivity, which was found to increase with MgO doping content ranging from 0 to 3mol% and subsequently to decrease. High oxygen ionic conductivity σt=0.00629S/cm was achieved for sample doped with 3mol% MgO at 600°C in air atmosphere.

Abstract:Ceramics of composition 0.86BaTiO3-0.14(Bi3/4Na1/4)(Mg1/4Ti3/4)O3 (0.86BT-0.14BNMT) are synthesized and verified to be of perovskite tetragonal symmetry. The ceramics also exhibit saddle-back shaped dielectric anomalies as a function of temperature. The high temperature anomaly at Tm (393 K) is essentially frequency independent; the low temperature anomaly at T1 (301 K at 1 kHz) however is strongly dispersive with frequency. The temperature dependence of the relaxation time, (T), can be fitted well with a Vogel-Fulcher type relation. The P-E relation below 228 K is of characteristic hysteresis type of a normal ferroelectric. As the temperature approaches to 333 K, the P-E loops became slim resembling relaxor characteristics. Three pyroelectric peaks were found that correspond to respective phase transitions of BaTiO3, which indicates the dominance of ferroelectric BT clusters in the solid solution compositions.
Significantly Enhanced Ferroelectricity and Magnetic Properties in (Sr0.5ca0.5)tio3-Modified Bifeo3 Ceramics

Abstract:BiFeO3 multiferroic ceramics were modified by introducing (Sr0.5Ca0.5)TiO3 to form solid solutions. The single phase structure was easy to be obtained in Bi1−x(Sr0.5Ca0.5)xFe1−xTixO3 (x = 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, and 0.4) solid solutions. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction data revealed a transition from rhombohedral R3c (x = 0.2, 0.25, and 0.3) to orthorhombic Pnma (x = 0.4). Current density-field (J-E) characteristics indicated that the leakage current density was reduced by three orders of magnitude in Bi1−x(Sr0.5Ca0.5)xFe1−xTixO3 ceramics. Both the ferroelectricity and magnetic properties were significantly enhanced in the present solid solutions. P-E hysteresis loop measurements with dynamic leakage current compensation methods showed the significantly enhanced ferroelectric properties for x = 0.25 and 0.3 and the paraelectric behavior for x = 0.4. The best ferromagnetic characteristics were achieved in the composition of x = 0.25, where the saturated M-H loop was determined with Mr = 34.8 emu/mol. The improvement of ferroelectricity was mainly due to the suppressed leakage current, and the enhanced magnetism originated from the partial substitution of Fe3+ by Ti4+, which destroyed its previous spiral structure to allow the appearance of a macroscopic magnetization.

Abstract:Charge nonstoichiometric 0.94[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]TiO3–0.06BaTiO3 (BNT-BT) ([Formula: see text]) ceramics were prepared and investigated. The depolarization temperature was dependent on composition and the ferroelectric property of [Formula: see text] was suppressed more significantly than the [Formula: see text], indicating the composition-sensitive electrical properties. Furthermore, the [Formula: see text] was close to the insulator/conductor composition boundary while the [Formula: see text] was close to the ferroelectrics/relaxor boundary. These results were attributed to the complex effect of donor doping and acceptor doping on depolarization field. This work provides robust clues to tune and/or design electrical property and conductivity of [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]TiO3-based materials.
Significant ion conduction in Cu acceptor-substituted bismuth titanate polycrystalline ceramics

Abstract:This paper reports that Cu acceptor substitution at the Ti site has significant effects on structure and electrical properties of Aurivillius-phase Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 polycrystalline ceramics. Phase purity, microstructure and defect chemistry of Bi 4 Ti 3− x Cu x O 12− x (BiT–100 x Cu, x = 0–0.12) are characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS and EPR measurements. Neutron diffraction refinement indicates that BiT–8Cu has an orthorhombic symmetry [space group: B 2 cb ; lattice parameters: a = 5.4116(1) Å, b = 32.833(1) Å, c = 5.4479(1) Å and V = 967.98(5) Å 3 ]. Impedance spectra of BiT–100 x Cu were measured under variable oxygen partial pressure ( p O 2 ). Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 shows mixed electronic (hole) and ionic conduction owing to the existence of oxygen vacancies ( V_O^·· ) arising from the loss of Bi 2 O 3 during sintering. Interestingly, bulk conductivity in Cu-substituted Bi 4 Ti 3 O 12 ceramics is predominately ionic due to the fact that there are considerably additional oxygen vacancies introduced into the perovskite lattices. The optimum composition of BiT–8Cu shows high ionic conductivity in the bulk with a value of 0.007 S/cm at 650 °C.

Abstract:1 at.% Ti-doping on the B-site combined with a modified rapid liquid-phase sintering technique was conducted to improve the ferroelectric properties in Bi0.86Sm0.14FeO3 multiferroic ceramics. A tenfold increase of the remnant polarization was achieved in the present ceramics compared with the samples without Ti-doing and prepared by conventional solid state sintering, but the dielectric results and conductivities refuted the generally considered mechanism of suppression of leakage current or dielectric loss. Further investigation preferred an explanation of softening effects, which could be induced by donor doping and random orientation of defect dipoles during quenching process of the rapid liquid-phase sintering, and the ferroelectric data of the second heat-treated and polarized samples well supported such explanation. Abstract:Perovskite ceramics (1-x)BaTiO3-x(Na1/4Bi3/4)(Mg1/4Ti3/4)O-3 (x <= 0.10) were prepared using solid-state reaction. The permittivity peak of the compositions x=0.08 and 0.10 is saddle backed. The high turning temperature fixes at similar to 400 K and is the Burns temperature T-B of the samples. The low turning point decreases with increasing content of (Na1/4Bi3/4)(Mg1/4Ti3/4)O-3 and is associated with transformation between domains and polar nanoregions. The P-E relationship indicates that the permittivity in the saddle-backed region for composition x=0.10 is quasilinear when E < 2 MV/m. The behavior suggests a possible way for developing linear dielectrics with very high permittivity. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Polycrystalline (1-x)BiFeO3-xBaTiO(3) (0.11 <= x <= 0.5) ceramics have been prepared by the solid-state reaction method to investigate their phase structure, dielectric, ferroelectric, and field-induced strain behaviors. The phase was found to change from rhombohedral in BiFeO3-rich compositions to pseudocubic at a BaTiO3 content of x=0.33. The room-temperature dielectric permittivity increased with increasing BaTiO3 content regardless of phase structure, except for a small dielectric permittivity peak additionally observed at x=0.33. The (1-x)BiFeO3-xBaTiO(3) solid solutions displayed a maximum in permittivity at temperatures (T-m) above 300 degrees C in the compositional range of 0.2 <= x <= 0.5. The frequency dependence of high-temperature dielectric properties suggests that BiFeO3-BaTiO3 is a relaxor ferroelectric. Normal ferroelectric loops and large electric field-induced strains were observed for the BiFeO3-BaTiO3 ceramics. Abstract:Perovskite solid solution ceramics of (1 − x)BiFeO3–xBaTiO3 (1 − x)BF–xBT, 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.45) with high electrical resistivity were prepared by solid‐state reaction method. Actual ferroelectric hysteresis loops and temperature dependence of dielectric constant of the ceramics were obtained. Ceramics of 0.7BF–0.3BT with small rhombohedral distortion show highest remnant polarization (Pr = 26.0 μC/cm2) and piezoelectric coefficient (d33 = 134 pC/N). Compositions with pseudo‐cubic symmetry (intermediate phases) show relaxor‐like dielectric anomaly. The values of Pr and d33 decrease with increasing BT content, from 24.8 μC/cm2 and 104 pC/N for 0.65BF–0.35BT to 8.2 μC/cm2 and 5 pC/N for 0.55BF–0.45BT.

Abstract:Oxide‐ion conductors are an exciting class of materials in various applications. In this article it is shown that LaBi1.9Te0.1O4.05Cl exhibits extremely high chemical and electrical stability from oxygen partial pressure 10−25 to 0.2 atm. Bulk conductivity of this material is higher than the best oxide‐ion conductors, which is attributed to cooperative diffusion through interstitial oxygen sites in triple fluorite‐like layers. Oxide‐ion conductors are gaining attention as future materials in energy applications, such as solid oxide fuel cells. Many Bi‐containing compounds exhibit high oxide‐ion conductivity via conventional vacancy mechanism. However, interstitial oxide‐ion conduction is rare in Bi‐containing materials. Herein, high oxide‐ion conductivity is reported through interstitial oxygen sites in Sillén oxychlorides, LaBi2−xTexO4+x/2Cl (Bi2LaO4Cl‐based oxychlorides). Oxide‐ion conductivity of LaBi1.9Te0.1O4.05Cl is 20 mS cm−1 at 702 °C, and higher than best oxide‐ion conductors as Bi2V0.9Cu0.1O5.35 below 201 °C. Despite of the presence of Bi and Te species, LaBi1.9Te0.1O4.05Cl shows extremely high chemical and electrical stability at 400 °C from oxygen partial pressure 10−25 to 0.2 atm and high chemical stability under CO2 flow, wet 5% H2 in N2 flow, and air with natural humidity. Neutron scattering length density analysis, DFT calculations, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the extremely high oxide‐ion conduction is attributed to cooperative diffusion through interstitial oxygen sites (interstitialcy diffusion mechanism) in triple fluorite‐like layers. The present findings demonstrate the ability of LaBi2−xTexO4+x/2Cl as superior oxide‐ion conductors, which can open new horizons for oxide‐ion conductors.

Abstract:Bismuth layer‐structured ferroelectrics (BLSFs) are promising candidates for a variety of applications because of their high Curie temperature and environmentally benign nature as compared to their lead contained counterparts. Featured by the mica‐like grain growth habit and spontaneous polarization along crystallographic a‐b plane, it is difficult to obtain excellent ferroelectric properties for most of the BLSFs fabricated by the conventional ceramic route. Herein, a new approach is reported to obtain Bi2WO6 and Bi4Ti3O12 BLSF ceramics with non‐sheet‐like polyhedral microstructures. The intriguing ferroelectric hysteresis behavior, dielectric tunability as well as domain structures are successfully observed. The Bi2WO6 ceramic with a unique single‐domain structure in each grain shows a typical ferroelectric polarization‐electric field hysteresis loop with a remnant polarization of ~17.8 μC cm‐2 and a coercive field of ~43 kV cm‐1. These values have never been obtained in Bi2WO6 ceramics with sheet‐like microstructure. The Bi4Ti3O12 ceramic with irregular‐shaped and curved tiny domains exhibits an antiferroelectric‐like behavior, which is significantly different from the reported Bi4Ti3O12 counterparts that have plate‐like anisotropic grains. The present study would stimulate microstructure design and property modulation for other layer‐structured materials.

Large electrostrain and high energy-storage properties of (Sr1/3Nb2/3)4+-substituted (Bi0.51Na0.5)TiO3-0.07BaTiO3 lead-free ceramics

Abstract:In this study, we developed a novel (Sr 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) 4+ complex ion dopant to tailor the electrostrain and energy-storage properties of (Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 )TiO 3 (BNT)-based ferroelectric ceramics. The chemical formula of the investigated system is [0.93(Bi 0.51 Na 0.5 )0.07Ba)]Ti 1- x (Sr 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) x O 3 , where x = 0.0025, 0.005, 0.0075, and 0.01. The crystal structures, microstructures, and dielectric/ferroelectric/electrostrictive/energy-storage properties of the ceramics synthesized by a solid-state reaction method were thoroughly investigated. For the x = 0.01 composition, an ultrahigh electrostrain of 0.59% was achieved under an electric field of 130 kV/cm. The strain response of this composition increased progressively with increasing temperature from 30 to 150 °C while maintaining good symmetry. Interestingly, the electrostrictive coefficient Q 33 was shown to be strongly temperature-sensitive. The Q 33 value was 0.018 m 4 /C 2 at 30 °C and increased dramatically as the temperature increased, reaching a maximum value of 0.0378 m 4 /C 2 at 150 °C. Furthermore, under a relatively modest electric field of 100 kV/cm, a high recoverable energy-storage density of 1.36 J/cm 3 was obtained for the x = 0.0075 composition. These findings demonstrate that the addition of (Sr 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) 4+ complex ions can effectively tailor the electrostrain and energy storage properties of BNT-based ceramics. Moreover, the doping ion design principle can be applied to other BNT-based ferroelectrics, with potential for dramatic improvements in electrostrain and energy storage properties.

Abstract:Focusing on the high resistivity together with low intrinsic conduction in BaTiO3-BiMeO3 materials, it can contribute to the development of reliable high-temperature capacitor materials. In this work, x(Bi0 & sdot;5Li0.5)TiO3(0.8-x)BaTiO3-0.2BiScO3 (where x ranges from 0 to 0.2) ceramics were fabricated by a solid reaction method. The temperature stability of dielectric permittivity and resistance are improved significantly by the introduce of (Bi0 & sdot;5Li0.5)TiO3 (referred to as BL) compared to BaTiO3-BiMeO3. The composition discrepancy due to chemical inhomogeneity can be determined by SEM and EDS mapping although XRD exhibit a single perovskite phase. The characteristics of distinct conductivity behaviors in micro-regions was measured by kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). The non-stoichiometry gives rise to two kinds of defects for charge compensation: an ionic compensation and oxygen-vacancy compensation in different grains. The increase of the hopping activation energy of charged carries enhances the high-temperature resistance of the system. The sample of x = 0.15 shows very good temperature stability of dielectric permittivity in the temperature range from 200 degrees C to 400 degrees C, and that of x = 0.1 exhibits the highest resistivity of 3.6 M Omega cm at 570 degrees C. The proposed method gives an efficient strategy for improving the dielectric temperature stability and insulation by the special defect compensation in the perovskite oxides.

Abstract:Ceramics of a novel lead-free ferroelectric solid solution, (1−x)BaTiO3–xBi(Zn2/3Nb1/3)O3 [(1-x)BT–xBZN], have been prepared with x=0–0.125 and their structure and dielectric properties investigated. The effects of BZN substitution for BT on the crystal structure and dielectric and ferroelectric properties are examined. The structure at room temperature is refined to be tetragonal for x≤0.025, a mixture of rhombohedral and tetragonal phases for x=0.05, and pseudo-cubic for x≥0.075. As the BZN content increases, the Curie temperature TC of the solid solution decreases, and the phase transition becomes more diffuse. At x=0.075, relaxor-like behavior appears. The diffuseness of the phase transition and the crossover from ferroelectric to relaxor character are attributed to increased cationic disorder arising from the aliovalent coupled substitutions of Bi3+ for Ba2+ and (Zn2/3Nb1/3)3+ for Ti4+. A partial phase diagram of the solid solution is established.
