Abstract:Porous cross-linked polymers containing pendant triazole groups were synthesized from glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of divinylbenzene via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating method followed by functionalization with sodium 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATANa). They were characterized with FTIR, SEM, BET, and mercury intrusion and assessed as CO2 adsorbents. With interconnected hierarchical porous structure and abundant triazole groups which absorbed CO2 chemically in 1:1 stoichiometry, the adsorbents exhibited high CO2 adsorption capacity (3.6 mmol g(1), at 25 degrees C and 1 atm) and rate, and good CO2/N-2 selectivity (similar to 30). The adsorbents also displayed easy CO2 desorption with medium desorption heat (58 kJ/mol CO2), acceptable moisture endurance, and excellent recyclability. The results suggest that these functionalized porous polymers are potential adsorbents for CO2 capture

Abstract:AbstractPrecise engineering of organic porous polymers to realize the selective separation of structurally similar gases presents a great challenge. In this study, a new class of ionic porous polymers P(Ph3Im‐Br‐nDVB) with a high ionic density and microporous surface area are constructed through a facile copolymerization strategy, providing an efficient path to rational control over pore structure and functionality. The first example of ionic porous organic polymers is reported to address the challenge of discriminating the subtle difference of C2H2 and CO2, which have almost identical molecular sizes and similar physicochemical properties, which achieve the highest C2H2/CO2 selectivity (17.9) among porous organic polymers. These ionic porous polymers exhibit high stability and excellent dynamic breakthrough performance for binary C2H2/CO2 mixtures, indicating their practical feasibility. Modeling studies reveal that anions are the specific binding sites for preferential C2H2 capture because of Br−···HCCH interactions. This study not only demonstrates an efficient strategy to build novel ionic porous polymers integrating abundant micropores and ionic sites but also sheds some light on the development of functionalized materials for the separation of structurally similar gas molecules.

Abstract:As atmospheric CO 2 levels rise, the development of physical or chemical adsorbents for CO 2 capture and separation is of great importance on the way towards a sustainable low-carbon future. Porous organic polymers are promising candidates for CO 2 capture materials owing to their structural flexibility, high surface area, and high stability. In this review, we highlight high-performance porous organic polymers for CO 2 capture and summarize the strategies to enhance CO 2 uptake and selectivity, such as increasing surface area, increasing interaction between porous organic polymers and CO 2 , and pore surface functionalization.

Abstract:The precise control of porous structure has always been a key factor for porous materials. We tuned the porous structures by enhancing alkynyl-groups contents and introducing metal into porphyrin ring. We used simple polymerization and alkynyl crosslinking reactions to construct crosslinked porous porphyrin-based polyimides (CR-PPBPIs) from 2,5-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)-4 ' -phenylethynyl-biphenyl dianhydride (PEPHQDA) and 5,10,15,20-tetra[4-[(3-aminophenyl)ethynyl]phenyl] porphyrin (TAPEPP). CR-PPBPIs revealed BET surface areas (212, 578 and 593 m 2 g −1 ), dominated pore width (1 and 1.9 nm) and abundant CO 2 -philic substances. Thus, considerable CO 2 uptakes (1.92, 2.43 and 2.52 mmol g −1 ), CO 2 -adsorption isosteric enthalpies (31.9, 26.0 and 27.9 kJ mol −1 ) and superior CO 2 /N 2 selectivities (45.77, 38.72 and 46.26) were achieved. This work sheds some light on the precise regulation of porosity parameters in the crosslinked metalloporphyrin-based polyimides for carbon dioxide adsorption and separation.

Abstract:Porous covalent polymers are attracting increasing interest in the fields of gas adsorption, gas separation, and catalysis due to their fertile synthetic polymer chemistry, large internal surface areas, and ultrahigh hydrothermal stabilities. While precisely manipulating the porosities of porous organic materials for targeted applications remains challenging, we show how a large degree of diversity can be achieved in covalent organic polymers by incorporating multiple functionalities into a single framework, as is done for crystalline porous materials. Here, we synthesized 17 novel porous covalent organic polymers (COPs) with finely tuned porosities, a wide range of Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface areas of 430-3624 m(2) g(-1), and a broad range of pore volumes of 0.24-3.50 cm(3) g(-1), all achieved by tailoring the length and geometry of building blocks. Furthermore, we are the first to successfully incorporate more than three distinct functional groups into one phase for porous organic materials, which has been previously demonstrated in crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). COPs decorated with multiple functional groups in one phase can lead to enhanced properties that are not simply linear combinations of the pure component properties. For instance, in the dibromobenzene-lined frameworks, the bi- and multifunctionalized COPs exhibit selectivities for carbon dioxide over nitrogen twice as large as any of the singly functionalized COPs. These multifunctionalized frameworks also exhibit a lower parasitic energy cost for carbon capture at typical flue gas conditions than any of the singly functionalized frameworks. Despite the significant improvement, these frameworks do not yet outperform the current state-of-art technology for carbon capture. Nonetheless, the tuning strategy presented here opens up avenues for the design of novel catalysts, the synthesis of functional sensors from these materials, and the improvement in the performance of existing covalent organic polymers by multifunctionalization.

Abstract:The cross-coupling reaction of 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene with terephthaloyl chloride gives a novel ynone-linked porous organic polymer. Tethering alkyl amine species on the polymer induces chemisorption of CO2 as revealed by the studies of ex situ infrared spectroscopy. By tuning the amine loading content on the polymer, relatively high CO2 adsorption capacities, high CO2-over-N2 selectivity, and moderate isosteric heat (Qst) of adsorption of CO2 can be achieved. Such amine-modified polymers with balanced physisorption and chemisorption of CO2 are ideal sorbents for post-combustion capture of CO2 offering both high separation and high energy efficiencies.

Abstract:In this study, a facile strategy is reported for the preparation of porous carbon materials with adjustable pore size through carbonization of MOF-5 at 900 degrees C with the assistance of different additives. Results show that the physical and chemical properties (such as morphology, carbon defect content, BET specific surface area, pore structure) of the porous carbon materials can be adjusted through introduction of different compounds (i.e., C16H32O2, C6H14O6, C18H36O2, Na2CO3, KOH, Cu(NO3)2, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, ethyl cellulose) during the carbon-ization processes. CO2 adsorption experiment results show that there is a linear relationship between the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) and the cumulative pore volume of pores at 5-7 angstrom, suggesting that pores in the range of 5-7 angstrom play a major role in CO2 adsorption at such condition. While the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) is independent on the BET specific surface area of the materials. Among the prepared porous carbon materials, 5C-C6H14O6-900 exhibits the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (i.e., 3.32 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 1 bar, 0.88 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar), with good adsorption/desorption cycle stability and CO2/N2 selectivity. Our work provides a facile and general method to adjust and control the pore size dis-tribution of MOF-derived porous carbon materials. Besides, the analysis results indicate that the micropores in a specific pore size range play a decisive role in the adsorption of CO2 at low pressure, which provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents at low pressures.

Abstract:Efficient capture of CO2 and its conversion into other high value-added compounds by electrochemical methods is an effective way to reduce excess CO2 in the atmosphere. Porous polymeric materials hold great promise for selective adsorption and electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 due to their high specific surface area, tunable porosity, structural diversity, and chemical stability. Here, we review recent research advances in this field, including design of porous organic polymers (POPs), porous coordination polymers (PCPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and functional nitrogen-containing polymers for capture and electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. In addition, key issues and prospects for the optimal design of porous polymers for future development are elucidated. This review is expected to shed new light on the development of advanced porous polymer electrocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction.

Carbazole-based porous organic polymers for carbon dioxide capture and catalytic conversion

Abstract:Carbon dioxide is a kind of notorious greenhouse gas, and its rapidly increased concentration has caused global ecological and environmental problems. The efficient capture and conversion of carbon dioxide not only possess significance for environment, but also contribute to the development of industry and economy. Porous organic polymers (POPs) are a new class of porous materials that possess high porosity, high thermal/chemical stability, low density, designable structures and compositions, and facile functionalization strategies. POPs have been widely researched and applied in gas storage/separation, biomedicine, contaminant treatment, energy, catalysis and other fields. Polycarbazoles and polymers containing carbazole units can be constructed through various reactions depending on the structure and property of monomers. The oxidative coupling reaction and other reactions, such as Sonogashira-Hagihara coupling reaction, Suzuki coupling reaction, and Yamamoto reaction, have been employed to the construction of conjugated porous polymers. Monomers with suitable functional groups are utilized to fabricate hypercrosslinked porous polycarbazoles. Triazine-based polymers can be prepared from nitriles by a cyclotrimerization reaction. Covalent organic frameworks are constructed through Schiff-base reaction between amine-modified monomers and aldehyde compounds. Moreover, electropolymerization is a facile method to deposit porous films with a high monomer density on the surface of electrodes. Carbazole-based porous organic polymers possess microporous structures and abundant nitrogen contents, which show high sorption capacity and selectivity for carbon dioxide. For example, CPOP-1 constructed from 1,3,5-tri(9-carbazolyl)-benzene possesses a high adsorbing capacity of 21.2wt% at 273 K and 1.0 bar. Furthermore, the introduction of functional moieties, such as pyridine and hydrazine, helps to improve the adsorption performance. The transformation of linear carbon dioxide requires a significant energy input because of its thermodynamic stability, the dissociation energy of C=O bond is ~750 kJ mol–1. The participation of catalysts is essential to promote the efficiency of conversion. Polycarbazoles with intrinsic catalytic activities can be facilely constructed through polymerizations of functionalized monomers and post-modification strategies. The combination of porosity, adsorption, and catalytic property endows the polymers with excellent performances in chemical conversions of carbon dioxide (such as formylation and cycloaddition reaction), electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reduction reactions. As compared with analogous molecular catalysts, the high porosity of polycarbazoles not only guarantees that the active sites are fully exposed to reactants, but also gathers the substrates and restricts the reaction region to achieve the enhanced efficiency and selectivity. As heterogeneous catalysts, it is facile to separate and recycle the polymers from the catalytic system, and the catalysts still maintain high catalytic performance in cycling experiments.

Abstract:Hybrid macroporous adsorbent was synthesized for CO2 capture, where polyethylenimine (PEI)-enveloped titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO2) as well as Span 80 act as a co-emulsifier in the preparation of styrene/divinylbenzene high internal phase emulsion (HIPE). By means of interfacial control in one-step polymerization, the terminals of most PEI chains were embedded into the polymer matrix, and the PEIenveloped nano-TiO2 particles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of macropores to form a nanoscale roughness. Compared with the conventionally impregnated PEI in PolyHIPE, more amine groups in the hybrid polyHIPE are exposed to CO2 molecules, and the leaching and volatilization of PEI have been effectively prevented through the embedding technology, resulting in high adsorption capacity, rapid adsorption/desorption rates, and long-cycle stability in a wide temperature range. On the other hand, the particleformulated inorganic framework fascinates stress-strain strength and thermal conductivity to accomplish two important prerequisites for industrial application.

Abstract:Here, a series of N-containing hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) were synthesized from triphenylamine (TPA) or/and carbazole (Cz) monomers by one-step crosslinking reactions including Scholl coupling and solvent knitting Friedel-Crafts. Especially, the two reactions were also performed separately under adding both of TPA and Cz, and prepared HCP3 and HCP6. Notably, HCP1, HCP2, HCP3 prepared by Scholl coupling possessed better porosity with the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas (SBET) of 199.9-534.5 m2/g and micropore volume (Vmicro) of 0.088-0.24 cm3/g, while HCP4, HCP5, and HCP6 synthesized by solvent knitting Friedel-Crafts had inferior SBET (10.8-34.8 m2/g) with meso/macroporous structure. In addition, these HCPs displayed high N contents, various morphologies, and different hydrophobicity. Interestingly, HCP1∼HCP3 exhibited high CO2 uptake (104.7-116.3 mg/g) and acceptable CO2/N2 selectivity at 273 K and 1.0 bar, and large isosteric heat of adsorption (Qst) (28.0-46.7 kJ/mol), while the HCP4∼HCP6 showed the larger I2 vapor uptake (254.2-324.8 wt%) at 351 K and 1.0 bar than HCP1∼HCP3 (136.5-185.6 wt%). The results indicated the porosity especially microporosity played an important role on CO2 capture, while the SBET was not always the dominated factors for I2 vapor adsorption due to the predominant chemical interaction by electrons transfer, and the chemical structure of polymer skeletons should make the large contribution. This work will develop multifunctional polymers prepared by the facile synthetic method, and make a promising adsorbents for CO2 and iodine capture.

Abstract:In the design and construction of porous materials, these with exceptional structure and composition are often highly expected, as they may offer unique nanopore space for desired applications. Here, a new family of quasi-3D and a 3D porous coordination polymers (PCPs) (termed NTU-43 to NTU-50) were constructed via an evolution strategy from a layered structure (termed NTU-42). Single gas adsorption isotherms of CO2, N2, and CH4 display the dependency of gas capacity on optimized effects of pore size, functionality, and charged framework of these quasi-3D PCPs, where NTU-45 and NTU-46, the two with NH2-BDC and OH-BDC bidentate linkers (NH2-BDC = 2-aminoterephthalic acid and OH-BDC = 2-hydroxyterephthalic acid) have demonstrated outstanding ability for selective CO2 uptake. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to well explore the synergistic effects toward gas adsorption on a platform of quasi-3D frameworks. More importantly, the efficient CO2 capture from CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 mixtures has been also validated by breakthrough experiments under continuous and dynamic conditions at 298 K.
Tuning the Porosity of Ionic Covalent Triazine Frameworks Using Auxiliary Monomers for Highly Efficient CO2 and I2 Capture

Abstract:A series of ionic covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) bearing charged groups were designed and prepared through ZnCl2-catalyzed cyclotrimerization of 1,3-bis(4-cyanophenyl)imidazolium chloride and tricyanobenzene as an auxiliary monomer. Pore properties of the ionic CTFs could be controlled by varying the proportion of monomer. The resulting ionic CTFs had high BET specific surface areas up to 1105 m2/g, high pore volumes up to 0.65 cm3/g, and high physicochemical stability. Among the four ionic CTFs, tCTF-Cl-3 exhibited the highest CO2 adsorption of 72.7 cm3/g and highest I2 capture capacity of 370 wt%. The incorporation of ionic functional groups, the existence of homogenous charge distribution, and the permanent porosity improved the capturing ability and affinity of the ionic CTFs for CO2 and I2. This methodology, based on the fine tuning of monomer ratio, can be utilized to obtain new insights into the preparation of functional ionic porous materials.

Abstract:We herein report the synthesis of three different building blocks with pyrrolyl (Py), indolyl (In), and carbazolyl (Cz) motifs connecting by tetrazinyl linker. The corresponding hyper-cross-linked networks (HCTPy, HCTIn, and HCTCz) have been synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts knitting strategy using both Lewis acid (FeCl3 and AlCl3) and organic Brønsted acid (CF3SO3H) as the catalysts. It is demonstrated that the specific surface area (SSA) of the resultant HCTPy, HCTIn, and HCTCz networks can be finely tuned by the size of reactive motifs, in which the SSA increases with the size of reactive motifs and follows the order of HCTPy < HCTIn < HCTCz, regardless of the knitting methods. The CO2 capture performance of the HCTIn and HCTCz networks has also been investigated. Specifically, the HCTCz network prepared by the AlCl3-catalyzed solvent knitting method displays a high CO2 uptake capacity (4.90 mmol g−1) together with a high isosteric heat of CO2 uptake (31.6 kJ mol−1) and a high CO2/N2 selectivity (31.2) at 273 K, showing a great potential for CO2 capture.
