Abstract:Porous cross-linked polymers containing pendant triazole groups were synthesized from glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of divinylbenzene via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating method followed by functionalization with sodium 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATANa). They were characterized with FTIR, SEM, BET, and mercury intrusion and assessed as CO2 adsorbents. With interconnected hierarchical porous structure and abundant triazole groups which absorbed CO2 chemically in 1:1 stoichiometry, the adsorbents exhibited high CO2 adsorption capacity (3.6 mmol g(1), at 25 degrees C and 1 atm) and rate, and good CO2/N-2 selectivity (similar to 30). The adsorbents also displayed easy CO2 desorption with medium desorption heat (58 kJ/mol CO2), acceptable moisture endurance, and excellent recyclability. The results suggest that these functionalized porous polymers are potential adsorbents for CO2 capture

Abstract:As atmospheric CO 2 levels rise, the development of physical or chemical adsorbents for CO 2 capture and separation is of great importance on the way towards a sustainable low-carbon future. Porous organic polymers are promising candidates for CO 2 capture materials owing to their structural flexibility, high surface area, and high stability. In this review, we highlight high-performance porous organic polymers for CO 2 capture and summarize the strategies to enhance CO 2 uptake and selectivity, such as increasing surface area, increasing interaction between porous organic polymers and CO 2 , and pore surface functionalization.

Abstract:Efficient capture of CO2 and its conversion into other high value-added compounds by electrochemical methods is an effective way to reduce excess CO2 in the atmosphere. Porous polymeric materials hold great promise for selective adsorption and electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 due to their high specific surface area, tunable porosity, structural diversity, and chemical stability. Here, we review recent research advances in this field, including design of porous organic polymers (POPs), porous coordination polymers (PCPs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and functional nitrogen-containing polymers for capture and electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. In addition, key issues and prospects for the optimal design of porous polymers for future development are elucidated. This review is expected to shed new light on the development of advanced porous polymer electrocatalysts for efficient CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Carbon capture, storage, and utilization(CCSU) is recognized as an effective method to reduce the excessive emission of CO 2 . Absorption by amine aqueous solutions is considered highly efficient for CO 2 capture from the flue gas because of the large CO 2 capture capacity and high selectivity. However, it is often limited by the equipment corrosion and the high desorption energy consumption, and adsorption of CO 2 using solid adsorbents has been receiving more attention in recent years due to its simplicity and high efficiency. More recently, a great number of porous organic polymers(POPs) have been designed and constructed for CO 2 capture, and they are proven promising solid adsorbents for CO 2 capture due to their high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) surface area(SBET), adjustable pore size and easy functionalization.In particular, they usually have rigid skeleton, permanent porosity, and good physiochemical stability.In this review, we have a detailed review for the different POPs developed in recent years, not only the design strategy, but also the special structure for CO 2 capture. The outlook of the opportunities and challenges of the POPs is also proposed.

Abstract:One of the most pressing environmental concerns of our age is the escalating level of atmospheric CO2. Intensive efforts have been made to investigate advanced porous materials, especially porous organic polymers (POPs), as one type of the most promising candidates for carbon capture due to their extremely high porosity, structural diversity, and physicochemical stability. This review provides a critical and in-depth analysis of recent POP research as it pertains to carbon capture. The definitions and terminologies commonly used to evaluate the performance of POPs for carbon capture, including CO2 capacity, enthalpy, selectivity, and regeneration strategies, are summarized. A detailed correlation study between the structural and chemical features of POPs and their adsorption capacities is discussed, mainly focusing on the physical interactions and chemical reactions. Finally, a concise outlook for utilizing POPs for carbon capture is discussed, noting areas in which further work is needed to develop the next-generation POPs for practical applications.

Abstract:Several polymeric materials were prepared for reversible CO2 capture. These materials contain quaternary ammonium ions and hydroxide counter ions, including polymers grafted from carbon black, crosslinked porous polymers templated by ordered colloidal crystals, and high internal phase emulsion systems. The porous polymers displayed an order of magnitude improvement in the kinetics of the absorption and desorption processes and a significant improvement in the swing sizes compared to a commercially available material with similar functional groups. This work suggests a new direction for the design of porous polymeric materials for CO2 air capture.

Abstract:To overcome the challenges of global warming and environmental pollution, it is necessary to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, which is mainly accumulated in the air through the burning of fossil fuels. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly strategies to capture carbon dioxide and convert it into value-added products offers a promising way forward for reducing carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. In this context, POPs (porous organic polymers) have shown great potential as CO2 selective adsorbents due to their high specific surface area, chemical stability, nanoscale porosity and structural diversity, as well as POPs based heterogeneous catalysts for CO2 conversion. This review provides a concise account of preparation methods of various POPs, challenges and current development trends of POPs in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, electrocatalytic CO2 reduction and chemical CO2 conversion.

Abstract:Porous organic polymers (POPs), a new type of porous materials constructed by organic building blocks, have attracted attention and shown significant potential for CO2 capture and separation due to their high physicochemical stability and excellent adsorption capacity. Numerous POPs with good porosity (both surface area and pore volume) are preparedvia different organic reactions. The progress of capture and separation of CO2 by POPs is reviewed. Several potential strategies like increasing isosteric heats between sorbent and CO2 molecules by chemical functionalization for enhancing CO2 separation performance are summarized.

Abstract:N-containing porous organic polymers and derived porous carbons are promising for CO2 capture, while their simple fabrication still remains a challenge. Herein, the porphyrin-based triazine polymers were simply constructed from tetraphenylporphyrin and cyanuric chloride according to one-pot Scholl coupling reaction and Friedel-Crafts reaction. The as-fabricated polymers had the maximum CO2 uptake of 173 mg/g and high CO2/N-2 selectivity (IAST: 59.35) at 273 K and 1.0 bar. After KOH-activated carbonization, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (1004-3238 m(2)/g), micropore area (798-1434 m(2)/g), pore volume (0.54-1.76 cm(3)/g), micropore volume (0.41-1.02 cm(3)/g), and ultra-micropore volume (up to 0.29 cm(3)/g) were significantly improved, indicative of their outstanding CO2 uptakes (171-282 mg/g). The ultramicropore volume with a pore size of less than 1.2 nm and N content were proven to be the vital factors for CO2 capture. The synthetic strategy provides a simple and effective approach for the synthesis of the porphyrin-based triazine polymers, and the derived porous carbons were efficient for CO2 capture.
Oxygen-rich Porous Carbons from Carbonyl Modified Hyper-Cross-linked Polymers for Efficient CO2 Capture

Abstract:A series of carbonyl modified hyper-cross-linked polymers (HCPs) with different porosity was prepared and they were carbonized for production of oxygen-rich porous carbons. The results show that these carbons have high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (440–1769 m2/g) and outstanding microporosity (72–87%), the oxygen is greatly improved after the carbonization with the oxygen content of 20.7–29.2 wt%. The CO2 uptake of PDVC-700-1 is the highest with the value of 303 mg/g at 273 K and 1.0 bar and PDV-pc has the highest CO2/N2 selectivity of 46.8. Interestingly, the CO2 adsorption is linear correlated to the ultramicropore volume (d < 1.0 nm) with the correlation coefficient of 0.9935 (273 K, 1.0 bar) and the O content also plays a role in CO2 adsorption. These porous carbons have medium adsorption heat (28.5–34.9 kJ/mol) with an excellent desorption and repeated use performance.

Abstract:The emission of CO2 from industry and power plants has become a worldwide problem with a strong link to global warming. The development of novel materials for efficient CO2 capture and utilization is attracting worldwide attention as a hot topic in materials sciences. Among various CO2 adsorbents, porous carbons have proven competitive by virtue of their high specific surface area, tunable pore and surface structures, moderate heat of adsorption, and less sensitivity to humidity than other CO2-philic materials. In this review, we summarize the recent significant advances in porous carbon materials for CO2 adsorption and separation. Strategies to increase the CO2 capture capability are highlighted. We also briefly discuss the future prospects of porous carbons for CO2 capture.

This study presents POPs composed of pyridine units, serving as dual functional materials that act as sorbents for CO2 capture and as substrates supporting silver chalcogenolate clusters (SCCs) for catalytic CO2 conversion. The scalable and cost-effective synthesis of these POPs enabled the design of pilot-scale breakthrough apparatus with two parallel POP sorbent beds for continuous CO2 capture from simulated flue gas, achieving a high working capacity of 20 L-flue gas kg(POP)(-1) h(-1) for flue gas separation. Given the practical feasibility of using POPs for CO2 capture and the high catalytic activity of POPs loaded with SCCs in CO2 cycloaddition, a sequential process that integrates capturing CO2 from simulated flue gas and directly converting the captured CO2 into oxazolidinone achieves a high space-time yield of up to 9.6 g L-POP(-1) day(-1) in continuous operation. This study provides a viable strategy for CO2 capture and utilization using cost-effective, dual-functional porous materials.

Abstract:Carbon accumulation has raised worldwide concerns due to the risks of climate change. In such cases, direct carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and conversion from diluted sources has potential for negative carbon emission. Distinct from non-porous catalytic systems, the fascinating features of large specific surface area, highly exposed catalytic sites, varied structures and tunable functions make porous materials attractive candidates for integrating the process of capture and utilization of diluted CO2. In this review, we firstly provide a brief overview of the recent developments of porous materials, including zeolites, metal–organic frameworks, porous organic polymers, porous carbon, and functionalized mesoporous materials and their applications for CO2 adsorption at relatively low partial pressure. Afterwards, direct chemical transformation of diluted CO2 over different porous catalysts is discussed with the emphasis of their diverse functional roles. This is followed by a brief of current challenges and our personal view on future directions of this field.

Abstract:Redox‐active porous polymeric electrodes (PPEs) are developed with promoted advective gas transport and enhanced gas‐electrolyte contact adsorption area in a flow‐through mode for high‐efficiency carbon dioxide capture. This strategy offers new possibilities for manufacturing scalable and cost‐effective electrodes and is anticipated to be transferable to general electrochemically mediated separation technologies. Carbon capture is a promising technology to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions to achieve net carbon neutrality. Electro‐swing reactive adsorption has emerged as an attractive approach for sustainable decarbonization. However, current electrodes with limited gas transport present a major barrier that hinders their practical implementation. Herein, porous polymeric electrodes are developed to effectively enhance CO2 transport without the need for additional gas diffusion conduits. Such all‐in‐one porous electrodes also enable more accessible redox active sites (e.g., quinones) for CO2 sorption, leading to an increased materials utilization efficiency of ≈90%. A continuous flow‐through carbon capture and release operation with high Faradaic efficiency and excellent stability under practical working conditions is further demonstrated. Together with low cost and robust mechanical properties, the as‐developed porous polymeric electrodes highlight the potential to advance the future implementation of electrochemical separation technologies.

Abstract:Porous carbon is an emerging material for the capture of CO2 from point sources of emissions due to its high structural, mechanical, and chemical stability, along with reusability advantages. Currently, research efforts are mainly focused on high- or medium-pressure adsorption, rather than low-pressure or DAC (direct air capture) conditions. Highly porous and functionalized carbon, containing heteroatoms (N, O, etc.), is synthesized using different activation synthesis routes, such as hard template, soft template, and chemical activation, to achieve high CO2 capture efficiency at various temperatures and pressure ranges. Fundamental pore formation mechanisms with different activation routes have been evaluated and explored. Higher porosity alone can be ineffective without the presence of proper saturated diffusion pathways for CO2 transfer. Therefore, it is imperative to emphasize more rational multi-hierarchical macro-/meso-/micro-/super-/ultra-pore design strategies to achieve a higher utilization efficiency of these pores. Moreover, the present research primarily focuses on powder-based hierarchical porous carbon materials, which may reduce the efficiency of the capture performance when shaping the powder into pellets or fixed-bed shapes for applications considered. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a synthesis strategy for pelletized porous carbon and to explore its mechanistic synthesis route and potential for CO2 capture.

Abstract:The rapidly increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been a growing threat to human society. Selective capture of CO2 remains challenging with global importance. Recent works on porous materials demonstrated their potential and effectiveness in ameliorating the CO2 problem. This review will summarize the progress in advanced porous materials such as zeolites, metal-organic frameworks and porous organic polymers with tailored pore microenvironment and functionality for selective capture of CO2 over the past decade. The application of porous adsorbents for CO2 capture under important scenarios such as flue streams, biogas and direct air capture is presented. We discuss the design strategies for custom-made structure and functionality of porous materials that have led to high-performance CO2 capture with the separation efficiency (e.g., high capacity, selectivity, molecular sieving, moisture resistance) as well as efficient regeneration performance. In addition, this review also concludes the current existing challenges combined with potential directions for future development of porous materials towards industrial CO2 capture.

Abstract:The O-containing hyper-cross-linked polymers were synthesized from phenol (2-naphthol) and formaldehyde dimethyl acetal by a simple one-step Friedel-Crafts reaction, they were subsequently carbonized using KOH as the activating agent, and their adsorption to CO2 was carefully tested. The results indicated that these samples had a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area (up to 2241 m(2)/g), pore volume (up to 1.20 cm(3)/g), CO2 uptake (up to 6.3 mmol/g at 273 K and 1.0 bar), and CO2/N-2 selectivity (up to 96 for the HCPs, and 22.5 for the porous carbon). In particular, the CO2 adsorption was highly dependent on the ultramicropore volume (pore width < 0.7 nm), while the CO2/N-2 selectivity mainly relied on the oxygen content and the ultramicropore structure.
