Abstract:Porous cross-linked polymers containing pendant triazole groups were synthesized from glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of divinylbenzene via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating method followed by functionalization with sodium 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATANa). They were characterized with FTIR, SEM, BET, and mercury intrusion and assessed as CO2 adsorbents. With interconnected hierarchical porous structure and abundant triazole groups which absorbed CO2 chemically in 1:1 stoichiometry, the adsorbents exhibited high CO2 adsorption capacity (3.6 mmol g(1), at 25 degrees C and 1 atm) and rate, and good CO2/N-2 selectivity (similar to 30). The adsorbents also displayed easy CO2 desorption with medium desorption heat (58 kJ/mol CO2), acceptable moisture endurance, and excellent recyclability. The results suggest that these functionalized porous polymers are potential adsorbents for CO2 capture

Abstract:Two new thiophene‐based conjugated microporous polymers (BTCMP‐1 and BTCMP‐2) were synthesized by cross‐coupling polycondensation reaction of dithiophene derivatives, 1,4‐phenylenediboronic acid and 1,2,4,5‐tetrafluorobenzene. BTCMP‐1 and BTCMP‐2 display good physicochemical stability and outstanding CO2 adsorption capacity (648 and 289 mg/g at 50 bar and 318 K, respectively). In addition, BTCMP‐1 and BTCMP‐2 exhibit high iodine adsorption of 480 and 284 wt%, respectively. BTCMP‐1 has relatively loose accumulation and good porosity, which leads to higher iodine adsorption value of BTCMP‐1 than that of BTCMP‐2. The obtained thiophene‐based conjugated microporous polymers are ideal materials for iodine capture and carbon dioxide capture.

Abstract:The development of efficient adsorbent materials capable of dual capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) and iodine is of great importance due to the significant contribution of anthropogenic CO2 to climate change and the potential risks associated with nuclear energy sources, such as the release of radioactive iodine during nuclear waste processing and accidents. In this study, two nitrogen-rich tetraphenylethylene-functionalized porous organic polymers were prepared via a Schiff-base condensation reaction between 4,4′,4″,4‴-tetra(2,4-diamino-1,3,5-triazin-6-yl)tetraphenylethene (TTPE) and 2-carboxaldehydefuran or 2-carboxaldehydethiophene to form aminal-linked triazine-based porous organic polymers, TTPEPOP-O and TTPEPOP-S, having high surface areas of 741 and 999 m2 g–1, respectively. The synergetic effect of electron-rich nitrogen species, π-conjugated moieties, and microporosity of these polymers makes them promising adsorbents for effective CO2 sequestration and iodine removal. TTPEPOP-O and TTPEPOP-S exhibit moderate CO2 uptake of 2.34 and 2.94 mmol g–1, respectively, at 273 K and 1.0 bar, with high selectivity to CO2 over N2 and CH4 under ambient conditions. In addition, the two polymers demonstrate ultrahigh iodine uptake capacity of over 400 wt % from the gas phase and can remove up to 99% of dissolved iodine from iodine-cyclohexane solution. Based on our findings, the ecofriendly (metal-free) nature of TTPEPOPs and their ability to capture both CO2 and iodine make them promising potential materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract:A new metalloporphyrin-based conjugated microporous polymer, NiP-CMP, was constructed via a homo-coupling polymerization reaction. NiP-CMP possesses a high BET surface area of over 2600 m(2) g(-1), a large pore volume of 2.288 cm(3) g(-1), good stability, and displays excellent guest uptake of 202 wt% in iodine vapour. We also highlight that the polymer exhibits outstanding performance for the reversible adsorption of iodine in solution.

Abstract:With the global energy crisis stemming from the depletion of fossil fuels, the emergence of nuclear energy has spurred advancement in radioactive element capture technology. Radioactive iodine, found in nuclear waste, poses significant threats to both the environment and public safety. Consequently, the development of efficient radioactive iodine adsorbents has become a critical objective. In this study, we have successfully designed and synthesized three novel nitrogen-rich conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), i.e., Car-CMP-1, Car-CMP-2 and Car-CMP-3. These CMPs exhibit outstanding iodine vapor capture capacities (4.98, 3.38 and 5.10 g g–1, respectively) at 75 °C under atmospheric pressure, as well as exceptional iodine capture abilities in n-hexane solution. Moreover, the captured iodine can be rapidly released in methanol, showcasing excellent recyclability. The extensive π-conjugated structure and abundant electron-donating nitrogen sites of CMPs contribute to their remarkable iodine capture performance. Additionally, the three CMP materials demonstrate superior capture efficiency for methyl iodide vapor (with adsorption capacities of 1.6 g g–1, 1.1 g g–1 and 1.9 g g–1, respectively) and the mixed vapor of iodine and methyl iodide. Analysis using FT-IR, UV-vis and Raman spectroscopy reveals the presence of electron donor-acceptor pairs between the CMPs and iodine, indicating the charge-transfer (CT) interactions that confer ultra-high iodine capture capabilities to CMPs.

Abstract:The effective capture and recovery of radioiodine species associated with nuclear fuel reprocessing is of significant importance in nuclear power plants. Porous materials have been proven to be one of the most effective adsorbents for the capture of radioiodine. In this work, we design and synthesize a series of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), namely, TPDA–TFPB CMP, TPDA–TATBA CMP, and TPDA–TECHO CMP, which are constructed based on a planar rectangular 4-connected organic monomer and three triangular 3-connected organic monomers, respectively. The resultant CMPs are characterized using various characterization techniques and used as effective adsorbents for iodine capture. Our experiments indicated that the CMPs exhibit excellent iodine adsorption capacities as high as 6.48, 6.25, and 6.37 g g−1 at 348 K and ambient pressure. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated and the strong chemical adsorption between the iodine and the imine/tertiary ammonia of the CMPs, 3D network structure with accessible hierarchical pores, uniform micromorphology, wide π-conjugated structure, and high-density Lewis-base sites synergistically contribute to their excellent iodine adsorption performance. Moreover, the CMPs demonstrated good recyclability. This work provides guidance for the construction of novel iodine adsorbent materials with high efficiency in the nuclear power field.

Abstract:Capturing volatile radioactive nuclides including iodine (I129 or I131) is one of the major problems to be solved for environmental sustainability. Multiple types of functional microporous materials such as metal organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks have been constructed for iodine emission control. However, most of the microporous materials are limited by their weak binding force with iodine and low stability, leading to low capture efficiencies. Herein, the synthesis of pyridyl conjugated microporous polymer networks with large surface areas (PCMP‐Y) up to 1304 m2 g−1 and high yields up to 95% via a simple Yamamoto cross‐coupling reaction, is reported. The PCMP‐Y carries amine and pyridine N groups which have stronger interactions with iodine molecules. The high specific surface areas and porosities of PCMP‐Y facilitate iodine capture, delivering a maximum adsorption capacity of 4.75 g g−1 in a short time (3 h), which is superior to a majority of porous materials reported. Moreover, the reversible desorption nature of PCMP‐Y capturing iodine imparts a platform for metal‐free heterogeneous catalyst, which can be applied to synthesize aminobenzothiazole medicines via O2‐promoted cascade reactions.

Abstract:Covalent triazine skeletons (CTFs) are long-chain polymers with rigid hydrophobic aromatic skeletons and polar functional groups. Here, we selected three monomers to explore a series of stable CTFs (FCTFs, NCTFs, ClCTFs) with multiple active sites at 350 and 400 degrees C respectively, which can act as a porous platform for effective and reversible iodine capture. The iodine adsorption capacities of FCTF@350, NCTF@350, ClCTF@350, FCTF@400, NCTF@400 and ClCTF@400 are 285, 232, 231, 382, 372 and 340 wt%, respectively. Among them, the iodine capture capacities of FCTFs and NCTFs are higher than those of ClCTFs, which suggested that the introduction of electron-rich F and pyridine N groups can indeed improve the iodine adsorption capacity of the polymers. In addition, at 50 bar and 323 K, the CO2 capture capacity of FCTF@350, NCTF@350, ClCTF@350, FCTF@400, NCTF@400 and ClCTF@400 are 631.6, 539.2, 496.6, 876.6, 783.3, and 695.4 mg g-1, respectively. This shows that polymers have good applications in CO2 capture.

Abstract:AbstractConjugated microporous polymers are a unique class of polymers that combine extended π‐conjugation with inherent porosity. However, these polymers are synthesized through solution‐phase reactions to yield insoluble and unprocessable solids, which preclude not only the evaluation of their conducting properties but also the fabrication of thin films for device implementation. Here, we report a strategy for the synthesis of thin films of π‐conjugated microporous polymers by designing thiophene‐based electropolymerization at the solution–electrode interface. High‐quality films are prepared on a large area of various electrodes, the film thickness is controllable, and the films are used for device fabrication. These films are outstanding hole conductors and, upon incorporation of fullerenes into the pores, function as highly efficient photoactive layers for energy conversions. Our film strategy may boost the applications in photocatalysis, energy storage, and optoelectronics.

Abstract:The adsorption of iodine by porous organic polymers is an active research topic. Two new thiol-linked conjugated microporous polymers (SHCMPs) were successfully prepared by thioalkynes click polymerization. Lone pair electrons of heteroatoms can enhance the interaction between adsorbent and adsorbate, the ability of adsorbent to capture iodine can be improved by introducing electron-rich groups such as nitrogen, thiophene, fluorine, etc. The saturated iodine adsorption capacities of SHCMP-1 and SHCMP-2 are 590 and 495 wt.%, respectively. In addition, SHCMP-2 performs well in detecting Fe3+ in aqueous solution, which has potential importance for industrial application of water treatment.

Abstract:Anthropogenic carbon dioxide emission has been an urgent environmental and climate issue, yet remains a challenge to address. Solid adsorbents are potential candidates for CO 2 capture while their insolubility nature makes the regeneration problematic when fouled. Here we report the synthesis of a thioamide incorporated polymer of intrinsic microporosity, TPIM, which features high intrinsic microporosity with specific surface areas of 531 m 2 /g, and good solubility in selected organic solvents such as THF, DMSO and DMAc. Static physisorption and kinetic breakthrough experiments revealed several promising features of TPIM: high CO 2 capacity of 2.45 mmol/g at 1 bar and 298 K, good CO 2 /N 2 mixture dynamic separation performance, and facile regeneration ability. Most interestingly, its porosity and CO 2 capacity could be easily restored through a simple dissolution-separation-precipitation (DSP) approach, making it regenerative when fouled, providing a new insight for the future design of regenerable adsorbents.

Abstract:Imidazolium based porous cationic polymers were synthesized using an innovative and facile approach, which takes advantage of the Debus Radziszewski reaction to obtain meso- and microporous polymers following click chemistry principles. In the obtained set of materials, click based porous cationic polymers have the same cationic backbone, whereas they bear the commonly used anions of imidazolium poly(ionic liquid)s. These materials show hierarchical porosity and a good specific surface area. Furthermore, their chemical structure was extensively characterized using ATR FTIR and SS NMR spectroscopies, and HR MS. These polymers show good performance towards carbon dioxide sorption, especially those possessing the acetate anion. This polymer has an uptake of 2 mmol per g of CO2 at 1 bar and 273 K, a value which is among the highest recorded for imidazolium poly(ionic liquid)s. These polymers were also modified in order to introduce N-heterocyclic carbenes along the backbone. Carbon dioxide loading in the carbene-containing polymer is in the same range as that of the non-modified versions, but the nature of the interaction is substantially different. The combined use of in situ FTIR spectroscopy and microcalorimetry evidenced a chemisorption phenomenon that brings about the formation of an imidazolium carboxylate zwitterion.

Abstract:Three novel indole-based porous organic polymers (I3CA-POP, TAT-POP and Isatin-POP) were prepared for iodine adsorption from aqueous solution. It is worth noting that a polymerization process accompanying decarboxylation and a new method of constructing tertiary carbon center by ethanol and chloroform were proposed in the preparation of I3CA-POP and TAT-POP, respectively. In addition, our results indicate that I3CA-POP outperforms other sorbents in both I 2 aqueous solution and KI 3 aqueous solution. More importantly, the adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, regeneration and mechanism studies of I3CA-POP were performed, demonstrating that physisorption and chemisorption may proceed at the same time in the iodine removal process.

Abstract:As atmospheric CO 2 levels rise, the development of physical or chemical adsorbents for CO 2 capture and separation is of great importance on the way towards a sustainable low-carbon future. Porous organic polymers are promising candidates for CO 2 capture materials owing to their structural flexibility, high surface area, and high stability. In this review, we highlight high-performance porous organic polymers for CO 2 capture and summarize the strategies to enhance CO 2 uptake and selectivity, such as increasing surface area, increasing interaction between porous organic polymers and CO 2 , and pore surface functionalization.

Abstract:Radioactive iodine from nuclear waste poses a major threat to public safety due to its toxicity and long half-life. The capture and storage of radioactive iodine remains a major challenge. The incorporation of electron-rich heterocycles into the adsorbents could increase the adsorption capacity for iodine due to their strong interaction. In this study, three novel spiro-thioketal-based porous organic polymers, POPSP-1–3, were synthesized in excellent yields by a thiol-aldehyde polycondensation reaction. The polymers of POPSPs were thoroughly characterized using FT-IR, 13 C-NMR, BET, and PXRD techniques. These analyses revealed that the polymers are amorphous in nature and have a low surface area. The iodine uptake capacities of POPSP-1, POPSP-2, and POPSP-3 were measured to be 4.13, 5.25, and 5.65 g g −1 , respectively, at a temperature of 75 °C due to the increased density of the adsorption sites. Furthermore, the POPSPs exhibit exceptional adsorption performance in iodine/ n -hexane solution and their effectiveness in removing iodine is excellent. This work provides a novel approach for the development of sulfur-rich porous organic polymers (POPs) as effective adsorbents for iodine capture.
