Abstract:Three novel indole-based porous organic polymers (I3CA-POP, TAT-POP and Isatin-POP) were prepared for iodine adsorption from aqueous solution. It is worth noting that a polymerization process accompanying decarboxylation and a new method of constructing tertiary carbon center by ethanol and chloroform were proposed in the preparation of I3CA-POP and TAT-POP, respectively. In addition, our results indicate that I3CA-POP outperforms other sorbents in both I 2 aqueous solution and KI 3 aqueous solution. More importantly, the adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics, regeneration and mechanism studies of I3CA-POP were performed, demonstrating that physisorption and chemisorption may proceed at the same time in the iodine removal process.

Abstract:Herein, a mild and convenient strategy for the preparation of p -di(bis-indolyl-methane)benzene ( Ph-TIn ) using iodine as a catalyst was proposed. On this basis, three novel indole-bearing porous organic polymers (InPOPs) with different morphologies were successfully synthesized via Friedel–Crafts alkylation and oxidative coupling reactions. The obtained InPOPs ( InPOP-1 , InPOP-2 and InPOP-3 ) were applied for iodine adsorption in the cases of both an organic medium and vapor phase. Among them, InPOP-1 exhibits the best adsorption performance in iodine/cyclohexane solution. The thermodynamic and kinetic analysis reveals that the adsorption behavior of InPOP-1 is represented by Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models, respectively. Besides, the adsorption rate is influenced by both liquid-film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion. In addition, the results of thermodynamic calculations indicate that the adsorption of iodine on InPOP-1 is a spontaneous, endothermic and entropy-increasing process. However, InPOP-3 displays the highest capacity of removing iodine vapor. Furthermore, the recycling evaluations and spectral evidence of I 2 @ InPOP-1 and I 2 @ InPOP-3 demonstrate that the iodine adsorption process is influenced by both physisorption and chemisorption, whether in an organic medium or vapor phase. Most importantly, we draw a conclusion that both porosity and morphology of InPOPs significantly influence the behavior of iodine adsorption in organic media, whereas the larger average pore size is favorable to the adsorption of iodine in the vapor phase. This study will serve as a guide for future inventions of porous organic polymers in the field of radioactive iodine capture.

Abstract:Abstarct Iodine fission products with high radioactivity generated in the nuclear fuel fission process usually exist in the form of two isotopes, 131 I and 129 I. Since radioactive iodine is difficult to be effectively disposed of in the natural physical environment, it is imperative to formulate effective coping strategies to ensure the safe use of nuclear technology. Compared with other solid iodine adsorbents, porous organic polymers (POPs) have shown satisfactory results in terms of capture capability per unit mass and reusable due to their low density and high porosity. In view of this, this study adopted the Schiff base condensation reaction with in-situ generated imines under room temperature and took non-planar piperazine-based building blocks as reactants to synthesize a flexible polymer POP-PDTR and rigid polymers POP-PDTP and POP-PDTA. Iodine adsorption experiments have verified that their adsorption capacities can reach 3.90 g/g, 3.34 g/g, and 2.59 g/g, respectively. Their excellent chemical structural stability enables them to be reused for at least 5 cycles with stable performance. The results provide a new idea for designing and synthesizing persistent organic pollutant materials with excellent chemical stability and iodine adsorption performance.

Abstract:Radioactive iodine from nuclear waste poses a major threat to public safety due to its toxicity and long half-life. The capture and storage of radioactive iodine remains a major challenge. The incorporation of electron-rich heterocycles into the adsorbents could increase the adsorption capacity for iodine due to their strong interaction. In this study, three novel spiro-thioketal-based porous organic polymers, POPSP-1–3, were synthesized in excellent yields by a thiol-aldehyde polycondensation reaction. The polymers of POPSPs were thoroughly characterized using FT-IR, 13 C-NMR, BET, and PXRD techniques. These analyses revealed that the polymers are amorphous in nature and have a low surface area. The iodine uptake capacities of POPSP-1, POPSP-2, and POPSP-3 were measured to be 4.13, 5.25, and 5.65 g g −1 , respectively, at a temperature of 75 °C due to the increased density of the adsorption sites. Furthermore, the POPSPs exhibit exceptional adsorption performance in iodine/ n -hexane solution and their effectiveness in removing iodine is excellent. This work provides a novel approach for the development of sulfur-rich porous organic polymers (POPs) as effective adsorbents for iodine capture.

Abstract:Nitrogen-rich porous networks with additional polarity and basicity may serve as effective adsorbents for the Lewis electron pairing of iodine molecules. Herein a carbazole-functionalized porous aromatic framework (PAF) was synthesized through a Sonogashira–Hagihara cross-coupling polymerization of 1,3,5-triethynylbenzene and 2,7-dibromocarbazole building monomers. The resulting solid with a high nitrogen content incorporated the Lewis electron pairing effect into a π-conjugated nano-cavity, leading to an ultrahigh binding capability for iodine molecules. The iodine uptake per specific surface area was ~8 mg m−2 which achieved the highest level among all reported I2 adsorbents, surpassing that of the pure biphenyl-based PAF sample by ca. 30 times. Our study illustrated a new possibility for introducing electron-rich building units into the design and synthesis of porous adsorbents for effective capture and removal of volatile iodine from nuclear waste and leakage.

Abstract:Designing a novel adsorbent with high selectivity and absorptive capacity to remove I2 remains a challenging task. In this work, a series of porphyrin-based hyper-cross-linked porous organic polymers (PHCPs) with a dual hydroxy-rich structure were synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction. PHCPs exhibit excellent thermal stability. The incorporation of abundant pi-electrons and heteroatoms (N/O) in the PHCPs framework leads to substantial charge transfer interactions with iodine, resulting in a high adsorption capacity (469 mg g(-1)) and rapid adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption dynamics of PHCPs for iodine in both aqueous and cyclohexane solutions follow a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and the adsorption isotherm model complies with the Freundlich model. Importantly, PHCPs selectively capture I3 - in the presence of anionic competition and effectively capture iodine at different pH values. Additionally, the volatile iodine capture performance of PHCPs reached 623 wt %. This study highlights the extensive application prospects of PHCPs in the removal of iodine from both the gas and liquid phases.

Abstract:Given the rapid growth of the nuclear sector, effective treatment of radioactive iodine is critical. Herein, we report the synthesis and the iodine adsorption properties of croconic acid (CTPB) and squaric acid (STPB) containing π-conjugated novel zwitterionic conjugated porous polymers (CPPs). The CPPs have been synthesized through a condensation reaction of tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene with croconic acid or squaric acid in high yields (~95%). The ionic nature of the polymers promoted high iodine/polyiodide vapour adsorption capacity of up to 4.6 g/g for CTPB and 3.5 g/g for STPB under ambient pressure at 80 °C. The zwitterionic framework (croconic acid or squaric acid units) coupled with the aromatic units is expected to effectively capture molecular iodine (I2) and polyiodides (I3- and I5-). The iodine adsorption properties of the polymers have been studied using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brauner-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and Raman Spectroscopy. Besides this work, there are only three ionic units for effective iodine adsorption. This work demonstrates the importance of zwitterionic units in the porous network reported for iodine adsorption and separation.

Abstract:At present, porous organic polymer materials (POPs) have become a popular topic in the research of iodine adsorption materials. Herein, we report an electron-rich porous organic polymer (PTZ-TPC-MA), obtained by Schiff base polycondensation reaction between melamine(MA) and aldehyde monomer with high yield and simplicity. It structures was characterized through FT-IR, 13C CP/MAS NMR and other material analysis measurements. The PTZ-TPC-MA material, being abundant in N and S heteroatoms, the adsorption capacity for iodine vapor, reaching up to 198.1 wt%,and it demonstrates removal rate of 79.8% for iodine from hexane solution. In addition, the recyclability tests have also confirmed its excellent reusability. The material showed better iodine capture capacity for gaseous iodine and iodine in solution. Thus PTZ-TPC-MA material thus emerges as an optimal absorber for iodine capture, offering an effective strategy to solve environmental problems.

Abstract:The effective capture and recovery of radioiodine species associated with nuclear fuel reprocessing is of significant importance in nuclear power plants. Porous materials have been proven to be one of the most effective adsorbents for the capture of radioiodine. In this work, we design and synthesize a series of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), namely, TPDA–TFPB CMP, TPDA–TATBA CMP, and TPDA–TECHO CMP, which are constructed based on a planar rectangular 4-connected organic monomer and three triangular 3-connected organic monomers, respectively. The resultant CMPs are characterized using various characterization techniques and used as effective adsorbents for iodine capture. Our experiments indicated that the CMPs exhibit excellent iodine adsorption capacities as high as 6.48, 6.25, and 6.37 g g−1 at 348 K and ambient pressure. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated and the strong chemical adsorption between the iodine and the imine/tertiary ammonia of the CMPs, 3D network structure with accessible hierarchical pores, uniform micromorphology, wide π-conjugated structure, and high-density Lewis-base sites synergistically contribute to their excellent iodine adsorption performance. Moreover, the CMPs demonstrated good recyclability. This work provides guidance for the construction of novel iodine adsorbent materials with high efficiency in the nuclear power field.

Abstract:As one of the main nuclear wastes generated in the process of nuclear fission, radioactive iodine has attracted worldwide attention due to its harm to public safety and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is of crucial importance to develop materials that can rapidly and efficiently capture radioactive iodine. Herein, we report the construction of three electron-rich porous organic polymers (POPs), denoted as POP-E, POP-T and POP-P via Schiff base polycondensations reactions between Td-symmetric adamantane knot and four-branched "linkage" molecules. We demonstrated that all the three POPs showed high iodine adsorption capability, among which the adsorption capacity of POP-T for iodine vapor reached up to 3.94 g·g−1 and the removal rate of iodine in n-hexane solution was up to 99%. The efficient iodine capture mechanism of the POP-T was investigated through systematic comparison of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after iodine adsorption. The unique π-π conjugated system between imine bonds linked aromatic rings with iodine result in charge-transfer complexes, which explains the exceptional iodine capture capacity. Additionally, the introduction of heteroatoms into the framework would also enhance the iodine adsorption capability of POPs. Good retention behavior and recycling capacity were also observed for the POPs.

Abstract:A new metalloporphyrin-based conjugated microporous polymer, NiP-CMP, was constructed via a homo-coupling polymerization reaction. NiP-CMP possesses a high BET surface area of over 2600 m(2) g(-1), a large pore volume of 2.288 cm(3) g(-1), good stability, and displays excellent guest uptake of 202 wt% in iodine vapour. We also highlight that the polymer exhibits outstanding performance for the reversible adsorption of iodine in solution.
Iodine Adsorption via Porous Molecular Solids Based on Coordination Containers Derived from Naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylate

Abstract:Efficient methods to sequester the radioactive iodine element are urgently needed in the nuclear and environmental industries. Nanoporous solid adsorbents based on container molecules are particularly suited for achieving iodine sequestration due to their uniquely tunable intrinsic and extrinsic porous structure. In the present work, we describe the design and synthesis of two new coordination containers based on a sulfonylcalixarene precursor and naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylate linker and demonstrate their promising application for iodine adsorption and release. We show that, in addition to the more common C–H···π hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, another less appreciated type of noncovalent interaction, namely, a dual Br···π binding motif, can be introduced through the modification of the dicarboxylate linker with a bromine substituent to strengthen the crystal packing and maintain the solid-state porosity of the molecular containers. These synthetic coordination containers not only exhibit an excellent adsorption capacity for iodine vapor at a solid–gas interface but also show an effective iodine capture ability from a hexane solution through a solid–liquid interface. Importantly, the adsorption of iodine by these porous molecular solids displays remarkable reversibility and recyclability, indicating their promising practical utility for iodine capture and release.

Preparation of an electron-rich polyimide-based hypercrosslinked polymer for high-efficiency and reversible iodine capture

Abstract:Effective and reversible iodine adsorption is among the most important means to solve nuclear pollution. Herein, a novel electron-rich hypercrosslinked polymer (HCP) was obtained via a simple photocycloaddition of the cinnamoyl-containing polyimide precursor. The resulting polymer showed a high specific surface area of 531 m 2 g −1 and high thermal stability. Taking advantage of the high porosity, high electron-rich heteroatoms contents and π-electron conjugated backbone, the material exhibits excellent iodine capture performance, including ultrahigh iodine vapor capture (528 wt%) and iodine removal efficiency from aqueous solution. The capture behavior is consistent with the pseudo-second-order model and the spectral results indicate that the captured iodine existed in the form of polyiodide anions. Furthermore, the HCP maintained 90.76% of the uptake capacity after four cycles. This study provides a new proposal for the preparation of functional HCP as an efficient iodine absorbent to solve environmental issues.

Abstract:Cationic porous organic polymers have a unique advantage in removing radioactive iodine from the aqueous phase because iodine molecules exist mainly in the form of iodine-containing anions. However, halogen anions will inevitably be released into water during the ion-exchange process. Herein, we reported a novel and easy-to-construct zwitterionic hypercrosslinked polymer (7AIn-PiP)-containing cationic pyridinium-type group, uncharged pyridine-type group, pyrrole-type group, and even an electron-rich phenyl group, which in synergy effectively removed 94.2% (456 nm) of I2 from saturated I2 aqueous solution within 30 min, surpassing many reported iodine adsorbents. Moreover, an I2 adsorption efficiency of ~95% can still be achieved after three cyclic evaluations, indicating a good recycling performance. More importantly, a unique dual 1,3-dipole was obtained and characterized by 1H/13C NMR, HRMS, and FTIR, correlating with the structure of 7AIn-PiP. In addition, the analysis of adsorption kinetics and the characterization of I2@7AIn-PiP indicate that the multiple binding sites simultaneously contribute to the high affinity towards iodine species by both physisorption and chemisorption. Furthermore, an interesting phenomenon of inducing the formation of HIO2 in unsaturated I2 aqueous solution was discovered and explained. Overall, this work is of great significance for both material and radiation protection science.

Abstract:Capturing volatile radioactive nuclides including iodine (I129 or I131) is one of the major problems to be solved for environmental sustainability. Multiple types of functional microporous materials such as metal organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks have been constructed for iodine emission control. However, most of the microporous materials are limited by their weak binding force with iodine and low stability, leading to low capture efficiencies. Herein, the synthesis of pyridyl conjugated microporous polymer networks with large surface areas (PCMP‐Y) up to 1304 m2 g−1 and high yields up to 95% via a simple Yamamoto cross‐coupling reaction, is reported. The PCMP‐Y carries amine and pyridine N groups which have stronger interactions with iodine molecules. The high specific surface areas and porosities of PCMP‐Y facilitate iodine capture, delivering a maximum adsorption capacity of 4.75 g g−1 in a short time (3 h), which is superior to a majority of porous materials reported. Moreover, the reversible desorption nature of PCMP‐Y capturing iodine imparts a platform for metal‐free heterogeneous catalyst, which can be applied to synthesize aminobenzothiazole medicines via O2‐promoted cascade reactions.

Abstract:The enrichment of radioactive iodine in the waste of nuclear industries threatens human health, and thus the efficient capture of iodine has attracted a great deal of attention in recent years. Porous organic polymers (POPs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), new classes of porous materials, act as outstanding candidate adsorbent materials in this field due to their high surface areas, permanent tunable porosities, controllable structures, high thermal/chemical stabilities, versatility in molecular design and potential for post-synthetic modification. Herein, this review focuses on the research progress of these two types of porous materials for highly efficient iodine capture. We analyze and discuss some valid strategies for enhancing their iodine uptake, including increasing their surface area and pore volume, using organic building units with unique configurations and functions, introducing chemical functional groups to provide high-enthalpy binding sites, and further processing of POP and MOF materials. Indeed, there are many special structural and functional features found in porous POP and MOF materials, which make them unique and merit further exploration. Thus, we expect to see their usage grow as this field progresses.

Abstract:Porous polymeric materials (PPMs) with phosphine oxide/chalcogenide (P = X) ligands were exploited, for the first time, for efficient capture of iodine from the vapor phase. Using triphenylphosphine oxide/sulfide/selenide (TPPO/S/Se), P = X ligands were introduced onto polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) skeleton via a facile Friedel-Crafts reaction. They show iodine loading capacities, 1.22 g/g to 1.37 g/g at 90 degrees C, and 0.76 g/g to 0.85 g/g at 160 degrees C. Once heated at 160 degrees C under vacuum, they can still keep a considerable iodine loading capacity, 0.41 g/g and 0.51 g/g for POSS-TPPS and POSS-TPPSe, respectively. After soaking in ethanol, the POSS-TPPS/Se retained iodine more than 50%, the highest ratio reported so far for iodine release from PPMs. Besides, the dynamic column experiments were carried out to WA their competitive adsorption performance of iodine from a mixed stream with water vapor (40% Relative humidity), and the results suggest that the elevated temperature (160 degrees C) can reduce the adverse effect of water adsorption remarkably. Moreover, the spectral evidence and DFT calculations reveal that a strong charge transfer through P = X to iodine originates from the three aromatic rings and the chalcogens. The adsorption energy for POSS-TPPSe complexing iodine can reach up to 66 kJ/mol I-2, higher than other PPMs. As the first study of adsorbents with P = X ligands for iodine capture, this work opens a new avenue for the adsorptive capture of radioiodine in vapor at elevated temperatures and provides new insights for the interaction mechanism between P = X ligands and iodine molecules.

Abstract:The efficient and safe capture of volatile radioiodine is of great significance in the reprocessing of spent fuel. Herein, the millimeter-scale pitch-based hyper-cross-linked porous () composite beads were firstly synthesized for the removal of volatile iodine and methyl iodide. beads exhibit high iodine vapor and methyl iodide uptake capacities of 770.0 mg/g and 186.5 mg/g, respectively. More impressively, the uptake capacities of (744.5 mg/g for iodine vapor and 180 mg/g for methyl iodide) remained almost unchanged after treatment with 3 mol/L of nitric acid. The rich interconnected pore structure of promotes the rapid physical capture of iodine and methyl iodide. Intrinsic features such as low-cost preparation, good mechanical properties as well as thermal, acid stability and excellent performance in iodine capture indicate that can be used as a potential candidate for the removal of radioactive iodine in the exhaust gas stream of post-treatment plants.
