Abstract:NiCo2O4/r-GO nanocomposites were obtained using hydrothermal synthesis, followed by an annealing treatment. The products were examined by XRD, FESEM, TEM, and XPS, which indicated that the NiCo2O4/r-GO nanocomposites were synthesized successfully. For exploring their potential applications in the gas detection field, gas sensors were fabricated by employing the NiCo2O4/r-GO nanocomposites and explored for their sensing ability towards H2S at room temperature. It could be found that the NiCo2O4/r-GO nanocomposites exhibited a relatively high response of 3.51 and very short response time of 2 s when exposed to 100 ppm of H2S, which were higher and faster, respectively, than those of pure NiCo2O4. Moreover, the reasons for the enhancement in the sensing properties by combining with r-GO were also discussed.
Ultrasensitive Ppb-Level H 2 S Gas Sensor at Room Temperature Based on WO 3 /rgo Hybrids

Abstract:Gas sensors with high performance and low energy consumption are necessary for system integration in the environment monitoring of explosives. High-performance room-temperature hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas sensors were fabricated based on the hybrids of tungsten oxide (WO3)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO). WO3 nanocubes modified with different contents of rGO were synthesized by acid-based hydrothermal method. The optimal amount of rGO in the composite is 5 wt%, at which the room-temperature operating sensor presents the highest sensitivity of approximately 32.7 to 500 ppb H2S, a fast recovery time of ~ 180 s, as well as an excellent sensing selectivity. The overall improvement in sensing performances demonstrated an important progress made in H2S sensor fabrication for portable and real-time gas detection. The improved gas-sensing performance is attributed to the large specific surface area of the WO3 nanocubes, the formation of WO3/rGO heterojunctions, and the enhanced electron transfer efficiency.
Ultra-sensitive Room-Temperature H 2 S Sensor Using Ag–In 2 O 3 Nanorod Composites

Abstract:Ultra-sensitive H 2 S sensors operated at room temperature were fabricated using Ag–In 2 O 3 nanorod composites synthesized using sol–hydrothermal method followed by NaBH 4 reduction process. TEM proved that the In 2 O 3 was nanorod structures of ~ 110 nm in length and ~ 35 nm in diameter. Ag nanoparticles with diameters from 10 to 15 nm homogeneously decorated on the surfaces of the In 2 O 3 naonorods. XRD and XPS analysis proved that the Ag elements existed as zero-valent metallic silver on the surface of the In 2 O 3 nanorods. Ag nanoparticles could enhance the formation of chemisorbed oxygen species and interactions between H 2 S molecules and oxygen species due to spillover effect, and the electron transfer between Ag and In 2 O 3 nanorods also enhanced the sensing properties. Therefore, the H 2 S sensors based on the Ag–In 2 O 3 nanorod composites showed significantly improved sensing performance than those based on the pure In 2 O 3 nanorods. The optimized content of Ag nanoparticles is 13.6 wt%. Operated at room temperature, the H 2 S sensors made of 13.6 wt% Ag–In 2 O 3 nanorod composites exhibited an ultra-high response of 93719 to 20 ppm H 2 S and a superior detection limit of 0.005 ppm. The sensor also showed good reversibility, good selectivity, excellent reproducibility and stability for detection of H 2 S gas.
Sensitive H2 Gas Sensors Based on SnO2 Nanowires

Abstract:Sensitive H-2 gas sensors are highly desirable for the prediction and early-warning of H-2 leakage. Low-dimensional nanostructures of metal oxide semiconductor emerge as promising materials candidates, but it remains a challenge to preserve the nanostructures in the real sensors. In this work, we demonstrated highly sensitive H-2 gas sensors based on porous network of SnO2 nanowires that exhibited ultrasmall diameter similar to 2 nm. Colloidal SnO2 nanowires synthesized via a solvothermal process were drop-coated onto the commercial alumina substrates, followed by in-situ annealing treatment at 350 degrees C to remove the surface ligands. The sensors exhibited sensitive response with linear dependence on the H-2 gas concentration ranging from 2 ppm to 100 ppm when operated at 250 degrees C. Typically, the sensor had a response of 13 toward 40 ppm of H-2, with the response and recovery time being 15 s and 31 s, respectively. To further improve the sensor performance, Palladium doped SnO2 nanowires were thoroughly investigated. It's shown that, the operating temperature of the sensor decreased from 250 degrees C to 150 degrees C after Pd doping, and the response and recovery time decreased to 6 s/3 s. The superb sensitivity was attributed to the enhanced gas reception, electron transport as well as utility factor owing to the network nanostructure of ultrathin SnO2 nanowires and catalytic activity of Pd, according to theoretical calculation and adsorption kinetics studies. Combined with the excellent solution processability, the colloidal SnO2 nanowires are potentially attractive for next-generation gas sensors with lower power consumption and integration with silicon-based substrates.

Abstract:The use of metal-oxide sensors for effectively detecting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas at room temperature is currently hindered by their inadequate sensitivity and selectivity. Using a lucid fabrication strategy, we report a room-temperature, highly sensitive, and selective H2S gas sensor using NiO-modified WO3 nanorod (one-dimensional-one-dimensional) random networks. The observed improvements in gas-sensing sensitivity stem from the synergistic effects of various contributions inside the sensing heterostructure, such as bulk nanorod, p-n heterojunction at the interface of these two dissimilar oxides, and gas-induced conducting species due to sulfurization (WS2-x and NiS1-x ). An in situ impedance measurement during gas exposure was used to investigate the influence of these effects. The analysis revealed that these contributing factors can be either cooperating or competing and lead to either increased or decreased sensitivity, respectively. The presence of semimetallic species (NiS, WS2) was further confirmed by in situ X-ray diffraction analysis of the heterostructure nanorod sample with H2S gas exposure. The related sensing mechanism in the heterostructures is presented with a conduction pathway model. The room-temperature-operated nanorod heterostructure sensors showed a lower detection limit of H2S at ∼0.5 ppm, which is significantly lower than its toxicity limiting value ∼10 ppm, per the Environmental Protection Agency. The nanorod heterostructure sensors can be used for real-time, low-cost, room-temperature alarms in an H2S monitoring system.

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3) has been intensely investigated as an important gas-sensing materials. Here the sensitive and selective H2S gas sensors based on WO3 quantum dots that were synthesized via a colloidal process using WCl6 ethanol solutions mixed with oleic acid and oleylamine were demonstrated. The solution processability of the colloidal WO3 quantum dots enabled a room-temperature sensor fabrication without high-temperature sintering. The optimal sensor response toward 50 ppm of H2S is 57 with the response time of 47 s, and the response was fully recoverable upon H2S release at 80 degrees C. The sensing mechanism was discussed by using first-principles calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Their highly sensitive and fast response at lower operating temperature, combined with the benefit of ease fabrication, make the colloidal tungsten oxide quantum dots highly attractive for the construction of low cost gas sensor with reduced power consumption. Abstract:This work presents an excellent H2S gas sensor based on tungsten oxide and tin dioxide (WO3/SnO2) nanocomposites. WO3 nanocubes and SnO2 nanoparticle materials were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and composite and single material sensors were prepared based on these two materials. The sensing performance of WO3/SnO2 composite nanomaterials to H2S gas was studied systematically. First, it is determined that the optimum working temperature of the composite material sensor is 200 °C, and the optimum mass ratio of WO3 and SnO2 is 1:1. The response and recovery time of the composite sensor to 2-ppm H2S gas are 25 and 41 s, respectively, and the response value is as high as 55.24%. The sensor has excellent repeatability and long-term stability. The sensor has specific selectivity for H2S gas. In addition, a H2S gas detection circuit is constructed to realize the real-time display of gas concentration and the alarm of exceeding the limit.

Abstract:A facile hydrothermal method to prepare In-doped Co3O4 porous nanosheets is reported in this paper for the first time. The prepared samples were made into gas sensors, and their sensing properties, such as response, response time, recovery time, selectivity and stability, have been researched systematically. These results indicate that the sensor fabricated with 1.0 at% In-doped Co3O4 porous nanosheets shows a high response of 6.81 to 50 ppm and an obvious response of 1.4 to 1 ppm H2S. What's more, this sensor exhibited a high selectivity and outstanding long-term stability toward H2S. The excellent gas sensing performance was mainly ascribed to two reasons. (i) Doping with In increases the concentration of charge carriers, oxygen-deficient regions and the chemisorbed oxygen, which enhances the gas response. (ii) The rough porous structure is conducive to gas adsorption and capture, and provides many active sites for the sensing reaction. Therefore, 1.0 at% In-doped Co3O4 porous nanosheets could be used as a sensing material in future applications.
Chemiresistive Room Temperature H2S Gas Sensor Based on MoO3 Nanobelts Decorated with MnO2 Nanoparticles

Abstract:In this work, we develop ultrafast detection and reversible H2S gas sensor at room temperature (RT, 23 degree celsius). The optimized MoO3/MnO2 (MM-10) sensor exhibits remarkable sensitivity to H2S with a response of 32.51-100 ppm H2S at RT, which is approximately 21.82 times higher than that of the MoO3 sensor. Further, the MM-10 sensor demonstrates a fast response of 5.71-1000 ppb H2S with response/recovery times of 40/42 s at RT. More surprisingly, the theoretical limit of the MM-10 sensor for detecting H2S gas is as low as 4.58 ppb at RT, which addresses the limitation of binary heterojunction-based sensors in detecting ppb-level H2S gas at RT. After 49 days, the MM-10 sensor still demonstrates reliable stability, ensuring the long-term detection to ppb-level H2S at RT in practical applications. Notably, as the relative humidity increases from 30 % to 90 %, the response only decreases by about 17 %, indicating an excellent shielding ability against water molecules. Additionally, it is found that 1 % relative humidity change has a comparable effect on MM-10 sensor as approximately 5.58 ppb H2S gas. The significant enhancement mechanism on the sensing surface in the context of H2S/MoO3/MnO2 interaction is also thoroughly discussed.
Ultraviolet-Induced Gas Sensing Performance of Ag/WO 3 /rGO Nanocomposites for H 2 S Gas Sensors

Abstract:The attention toward cost-effective and high-performance H2S sensors is increasing due to the growing need for physical health and environmental monitoring. In this paper, Ag/WO3/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites were synthesized by using a microwave-assisted gas–liquid interfacial method. Nanomaterials with different Ag doping contents were successfully prepared with AgNO3 as an additive. The Ag/WO3/rGO sensors exhibit remarkable selectivity toward H2S, and the gas sensing performances of Ag-doped WO3/rGO gas sensors are significantly better than those of WO3/rGO. At 150 °C, the response value of the 10 wt % Ag/WO3/rGO gas sensor to 100 ppm H2S is 204.5, which is 7 times higher than that of WO3/rGO, and the response/recovery time of the sensor is 9/49 s, respectively. Additionally, the gas sensing performance of the sensor is further enhanced under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The response value is enhanced to 685.8, which is 3 times higher than that without UV irradiation, and the response/recovery time is reduced to 8/38 s, respectively. The sensing mechanism is also discussed. This work offers a potential application for H2S detection in environmental monitoring and smart healthcare.

Abstract:Metal oxide/graphene nanocomposites are emerging as promising materials for developing room-temperature gas sensors. However, the unsatisfactory performances owing to the relatively low sensitivity, slow response, and recovery kinetics limit their applications. Herein, a highly sensitive and rapidly responding room-temperature NO 2 gas sensor based on WO 3 nanorods/sulfonated reduced graphene oxide (S-rGO) was prepared via a simple and cost-effective hydrothermal method. The optimal sensor response of the WO 3 /S-rGO sensor toward 20 ppm NO 2 is 149% in 6 s, which is 4.7 times higher and 100 times faster than that of the corresponding WO 3 /rGO sensors. In addition, the sensor exhibits excellent reproducibility, selectivity, and extremely fast recovery kinetics. The mechanism of the WO 3 /S-rGO nanocomposite gas sensor is investigated in detail. In addition to the high transport capability of S-rGO as well as its excellent NO 2 adsorption ability, the superior sensing performance of the S-rGO/WO 3 sensor can be attributed to the favorable charge transfer occurring at the S-rGO/WO 3 interfaces. We believe that the strategy of compositing a metal oxide with functionalized graphene provides a new insight for the future development of room-temperature gas sensors.
A Room-Temperature NO2 Gas Sensor Based on CuO Nanoflakes Modified with Rgo Nanosheets

Abstract:Conventional gas-sensing materials for detecting trace NO2 gas are suffering from limitations such as low selectivity, high operation temperature and an agglomerated tendency during synthesis. In this work, uniform CuO nanoflakes modified with rGO nanosheets (CuO/rGO) were synthesized via an ultra-low-cost hydrothermal process with a thermal treatment. The gas sensor based on the as-synthesized CuO/rGO was fabricated by spincoated method and applied to detect ppb-level NO2 gas at room temperature (23?C). Remarkably, the CuO/rGObased sensor maintained an ultrahigh response behavior of approximately 400.8 % towards 5 ppm NO2 gas with ultrafast response time of 6.8 s at 23?C, and the limit of detection was down to 50 ppb (S = 20.6 %). In addition, the gas sensor had outstanding consistency, reliable repeatability, and long-term stability (30 days). The improved gas-sensing response was attributed to the synergetic effects of CuO and rGO. Specifically, the porous flake-like nanostructures of CuO and high surface areas of CuO/rGO may provide additional active adsorption sites for NO2 gas and accelerate the redox reaction on the surface of CuO/rGO, leading to the ultrahigh response. On the other hand, the rGO nanosheets with excellent transport capability may serve as highly conductive channels to accelerate carrier transfer, which dramatically reduced the response and recovery time. Furthermore, abundant surface defects of CuO/rGO were also conducive to surface reactions in the gas-sensing process. Undoubtedly, the scientific study of the present work will promote potential applications of ppb-level NO2 detection at room temperature.
CdS Quantum Dots Supported by Ultrathin Porous Nanosheets Assembled into Hollowed-out Co3O4 Microspheres: A Room-Temperature H2S Gas Sensor with Ultra-Fast Response and Recovery

Abstract:With the urgent need to improve societal security, semiconductor-based gas sensors have received substantial attention for their efficiency and accuracy in the detection of harmful gases. However, challenging existed to develop sensors that exhibit both high response and rapid response/recovery rates at room temperature. Herein, we present a simple and energy-efficient room-temperature in situ growth strategy to prepare CdS quantum dots supported by ultrathin porous nanosheets assembled into hollowed-out Co3O4 microspheres (CdS QD/Co3O4 HMSs). XRD, EDX, BET, SEM, TEM and HRTEM analysis confirmed that the interconnected CdS QDs ((similar to)4.5 nm) were well dispersed on the ultrathin porous nanosheet of Co3O4 HMSs. The fabricated CdS QD/Co3O4 HMS sensor exhibited high response (12.7) and ultra-fast response/recovery rates (0.6/1.0 s) to 100 ppm H2S at 25 degrees C, which is ascribed to high active quantum dots and hollowed-out nanostructure. In addition, the sensor exhibited a low detection limit (1-5 ppm), good reversibility and exceptional long-term stability. This work explores an efficient way to fabricate high-response and ultra-fast response/recovery room-temperature gas sensors by integrating quantum dots with hollowed-out nanostructures.

Abstract:Porous CuO nanosheets were prepared on alumina tubes using a facile hydrothermal method, and their morphology, microstructure, and gas-sensing properties were investigated. The monoclinic CuO nanosheets had an average thickness of 62.5 nm and were embedded with numerous holes with diameters ranging from 5 to 17 nm. The porous CuO nanosheets were used to fabricate gas sensors to detect hydrogen sulfide (H2S) operating at room temperature. The sensor showed a good response sensitivity of 1.25 with respond/recovery times of 234 and 76 s, respectively, when tested with the H2S concentrations as low as 10 ppb. It also showed a remarkably high selectivity to the H2S, but only minor responses to other gases such as SO2, NO, NO2, H2, CO, and C2H5OH. The working principle of the porous CuO nanosheet based sensor to detect the H2S was identified to be the phase transition from semiconducting CuO to a metallic conducting CuS.

Abstract:Highly sensitive and selective detection of trace-level concentration H2S remains a major challenge for metal oxide semiconductor gas sensor due to sulfuration-induced poisoning. Herein, a strategy to adjust the reaction site by constructing heterojunction with mixed-metal oxide is proposed. In this work, NiO-CuO hydrangeas-like composite is prepared by a solvothermal reaction and subsequent pyrolysis of bimetallic Ni-Cu-BTC in air. The characterization demonstrates that NiO-CuO hydrangeas has a large specific surface area (27.85 m2/g) and porosity (0.14 m3/g), which can provide abundant adsorption sites and diffusion pathways for gas molecules. Moreover, the sensing test results indicate that NiO-CuO sensors exhibit recoverable characteristic and superior sensing performance. The response value of 2NiO-CuO sensor to 1 ppm H2S in dry air at room temperature (25 degrees C) is 3.99, which can be improved to 10.77 in 40 % humidity condition, making it suitable for practical application. Particularly, the sensor has a low detection limit of 50 ppb, a wide linear detection range (50 ppb-2 ppm), good repeatability, selectivity and long-term stability. The improvement of gas sensing response can be attributed to the porous structure, multiple p-p heterojunctions and synergistic effects between NiO and CuO.
Room Temperature Gas Sensor Based on Rgo/bi2s3 Heterostructures for Ultrasensitive and Rapid NO2 Detection

Abstract:Bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) is a promising material for detecting NO 2 molecules at room temperature thanks to its narrow and tunable bandgap. However, pure Bi 2 S 3 suffers from some sensing blemish because of its low electroconductivity and poor charge transfer efficiency. Herein, we synthesized the high sensing response room temperature NO 2 detection materials composed of Bi 2 S 3 nanoflowers and reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The formed conductive network and heterojunctions between Bi 2 S 3 nanoflowers and rGO nanosheets dramatically improve the conductivity and electron transfer efficiency. The excellent rGO/Bi 2 S 3 sensor shows a high sensing response of 9.8 (approximately two times higher than that of the pure Bi 2 S 3 ) and rapid response speed of 22 s (almost half of the pure Bi 2 S 3 ) upon exposure to 1 ppm NO 2 at room temperature. Meanwhile, the rGO/Bi 2 S 3 sensor displays superb humidity-independent, selectivity, and stability. These improved NO 2 sensing behaviors can be attributed to the heterointerfaces and the hybrid effects, which accelerate charge transfer efficiency between NO 2 molecules and the surface of rGO/Bi 2 S 3 heterostructure. To enable on -line detection of ambient hazardous gas, we designed a portable wireless NO 2 detector based on rGO/Bi 2 S 3 heterostructure. This study offer an insightful guidance for improving the NO 2 sensing behaviors of metal chalcogenides.

Novel Two-Dimensional WO 3 /Bi 2 W 2 O 9 Nanocomposites for Rapid H 2 S Detection at Low Temperatures

Abstract:Compared with single-component metal oxides, multicomponent metal oxides show good gas sensing performance in the field of gas sensing, but they still need to be further improved in terms of rapid response. In this paper, a two-dimensional flaky WO3/Bi2W2O9 composite material with a thickness of about 32.3 nm was synthesized by a simple solvothermal method. The composite has good sensing performance and selectivity toward H2S. When the operating temperature is as low as 92 °C, the response to 100 ppm H2S reaches 84.18, and the response time is 2 s, which is extremely fast due to the open system of the two-dimensional nanosheet. A combination of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to analyze the changes of H2S and the surface chemistry of WO3/Bi2W2O9 composite materials; the sensing mechanism of H2S was studied by a Kelvin probe and UV diffuse reflection. Compared with the pure phase WO3 and Bi2W2O9, good gas sensing properties of the WO3/Bi2W2O9 composite may be due to its unique heterostructure.
