Abstract:Flexible solar cells represent a unique field in which hybrid perovskites may find complementary application to silicon solar cells. However, significant challenges in the fabrication of electron transport layers and hole transport layers at low temperatures have been imposed for perovskite solar cells since flexible substrates typically cannot withstand high processing temperatures (>150 degrees C). In this study, a low-temperature (140 degrees C) processed SnO2 layer was adopted as the electron transport layer in perovskite solar cells on a flexible PEN (polyethylene naphthalate) substrate, and a fullerene derivative with a carboxylic group (CPTA) that modified the interface between SnO2 and MAPbI(3) was found to significantly improve the device performance. The beneficial effects of interface modification on increasing the carrier selectivity to electrons were elucidated, which resulted in a power conversion efficiency of 18.36% for the solar cells under simulated AM1.5 sunlight. The flexible solar cell still retained 75% of its initial efficiency after 500 cycles of bending with a curvature radius of 5 mm. The MAPbI(3) solar cells were stable under ambient air conditions (25 degrees C, 30% relative humidity), and 87% of the initial efficiencies were retained for the unencapsulated devices after 46 days of storage in ambient air.

Abstract:Interface engineering has become a critical process to fabricate efficient and stable planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells (PSCs), as the degradation of perovskite, hysteresis, and photo and thermal instability can all be triggered by the defective interfaces of PSCs. Herein, two fullerene derivatives, NMPPF and NMTTF, have been designed as interlayers between the MAPbI3 and TiO2 electron transport layer. The thiophene terminals of NMTTF have been found to effectively passivate the uncoordinated Pb2+ of perovskite, reducing trap density and charge recombination of PSCs as well as facilitating charge transport at the perovskite and TiO2 interface. Compared to the reference MAPbI3 PSC with a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCEmax) of 18.7% and serious hysteresis (ΔPCE = 7.2%), PSCs incorporating NMTTF achieve a PCEmax of 19.5% with minor hysteresis (ΔPCE = 1.2%) and outperform the performance of NMPPF (PCEmax = 18.0%, ΔPCE = 2.3%) and PC61BM (PCEmax = 18.9%, ΔPCE = 1.4%) modified PSCs. Unencapsulated PSCs adopting these NMPPF and NMTTF interlayers also exhibit good storage stability, maintaining 80% of their initial PCEs after storing in ambient for 30 days. Abstract:The hole transport material (HTM)-free carbon-based perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) are widely recognized as competitive candidates towards practical applications. However, the poor mechanical connection at perovskite/carbon interface and the low light transmittance of flexible substrates limit the fabrication of high-efficiency flexible HTM-free C-PSCs. In this paper, we develop flexible HTM-free C-PSCs with enhanced flexibility and light utilization by implanting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into perovskite film and carbon electrode to boost the connection at perovskite/carbon interface as well as by coating a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) antireflection layer to enhance light utilization of the polyethylene naphthalate/indium tin oxide (PEN/ITO) substrates. The CNTs are proven to not only enhance the flexibility of the devices, but also facilitate charge extraction and transfer at perovskite/carbon interface. The average transmittance of the PEN/ITO substrates increase by 3.63% after the incorporation of PMMA antireflection layer. As a result, the flexible HTM-free C-PSC with an architecture of PMMA/PEN/ITO/SnO 2 /MAPbI 3 /carbon presents a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.44%, which is the highest PCE for flexible HTM-free C-PSC devices. Moreover, this flexible PSC retains more than 84% of the original PCE after bending 1000 cycles at 7 mm bending radius attributed to the enhanced connection at the perovskite/carbon interface.

Abstract:We present a novel idea for overcoming the drawback of poor contact between the ZnO cathode and active layer interface in an inverted polymer solar cell (i-PSC), simply by incorporating an electron-acceptor self-assembled monolayer (SAM)--tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (TFTPA)--on the ZnO cathode surface to create an electron-poor surface of TFTPA on ZnO. The TFTPA molecules on ZnO are anchored on the ZnO surface by reacting its carboxyl groups with hydroxyl groups on the ZnO surface, such that the tetrafluoroterephthalate moieties lay on the surface with plane-on electron-poor benzene rings acting as positive charge centers. Upon coating a layer of fullerenes on top of it, the fullerene molecules can be physically adsorbed by Coulombic interaction and facilitate a promoted electron collection from the bulk. The active layer is composed of the mid bandgap polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) or low bandgap polymer, poly[[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl) carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]] (PTB7), as the donor and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the acceptor. Significant enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) was observed for the devices with the active layer P3HT:PC61BM (or PC71BM) by promoting from 3.20 to 4.03% (or from 3.27 to 4.04%) and with the active layer PTB7:PC71BM from 6.03 to 6.90%. This method should be also applicable to other types of active layer.
Pyridine‐functionalized Fullerene Derivative As an Independent Electron Transport Layer Enabling Efficient and Hysteresis‐free Regular Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:AbstractSuitable electron transport materials bearing good interfacial contact, improved electron transport ability, and matched energy levels are indispensable for developing efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, regular (n‐i‐p) planar Cs0.05FA0.83MA0.12PbI2.55Br0.45 (CsFAMA) PSC devices were fabricated using a pyridine‐functionalized fullerene derivative (C60‐3‐BPy) as an independent electron transport layer (ETL), delivering a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.22%, which is dramatically higher than that of the control device based on [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) ETL (15.70%). The energy level offset between C60‐3‐BPy and the perovskite is smaller than that based on PCBM ETL, which is beneficial for efficient ohmic contact in ETL/perovskite interface and improved open‐circuit voltage (Voc). Moreover, C60‐3‐BPy affords strong coordination interactions with perovskite, leading to an improved film quality of the perovskite layer with enlarged grain size and decreased trap state density, which contribute to facilitated electron extraction as reflected by the increases of both the fill factor (FF) and the short‐circuit current (Jsc). C60‐3‐BPy‐facilitated electron extraction further results in hysteresis‐free devices.
Hydrophobic Electron‐Transport Layer for Efficient Tin‐Based Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:A novel electron transport layer (ETL) combining indene‐C60 bisadduct and a non‐fullerene n‐type polymer is developed. Leveraging the high electron mobility, favorable band structure, robust interaction with Sn‐based perovskites, and elongated alkyl side chains of this polymer, the Sn‐based perovskite solar cell incorporating the novel ETL demonstrates a notable enhancement in power conversion efficiency to 13.90% alongside excellent stability. With excellent biocompatibility, a narrow bandgap, and long thermal carrier lifetime, tin‐based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) are promising within the solar technology. The fullerene derivative indene‐C60 bisadduct (ICBA) is recognized as the most efficient electron‐transport material for TPSCs, thanks to its suitable band structure. Nevertheless, the limited electron transport capability and susceptibility to moisture penetration of ICBA have hindered the progress of TPSCs. Herein, the study proposes a new hydrophobic electron‐transport layer (ETL) comprising a surface‐anchored non‐fullerene n‐type semiconducting polymer layer, poly (naphthalene diimide‐alt‐dithiophenebezothiadiazole) (PNDI‐BT), in conjunction with ICBA. PNDI‐BT exhibits high electron mobilities, a fitting band structure, robust interaction with Sn‐based perovskites, and exceptional moisture resistance, effectively addressing the shortcomings of ICBA. Consequently, this innovative hydrophobic ETL of PNDI‐BT/ICBA enhances electron transport and protects Sn‐based perovskites from moisture. As a result, the inverted TPSCs with the new hydrophobic ETL achieve an impressive efficiency of 13.90%, surpassing TPSCs with the ICBA layer (12.75%). Moreover, even after 1000 h of storage in ambient atmosphere, the encapsulated TPSC maintains a remarkable 81% of its initial efficiency. This comprehensive study seamlessly integrates the synthesis of non‐fullerene n‐type semiconducting polymer and device fabrication, providing valuable insights into designing cutting‐edge ETL structure for inverted TPSCs.

Highest‐Efficiency Flexible Perovskite Solar Module by Interface Engineering for Efficient Charge‐Transfer

Abstract:The electron transport layer (ETL) places an important role in improving the performance of flexible perovskite solar cells (F‐PSCs). Herein, w e demonstrate a room temperature processed SnO2:OH ETL that exhibits reduced defect density, in particular lower oxygen vacancy concentration with better energy band alignment and more wettable surface for quality perovskite deposition. More importantly, an efficient electron transfer channel is produced between the ETL and the perovskite layer due to the formation of hydrogen bonds at the interface, resulting in enhanced electron extraction from the perovskite. As a result, the efficiency of a large area (36.50 cm2) flexible perovskite solar module based on MAPbI3 is increased to as high as 18.71%, to the best of o ur knowledge, this is the highest PCE value reported for flexible perovskite solar modules up to date. In addition, it exhibits high durability while maintaining over 83% of its initial PCE after flexing test cycles. Further, F‐PSCs with SnO2:OH show remarkably long‐term stability, owing to a high quality of the perovskite film and a strong coupling between the SnO2:OH and perovskite layer caused by hydrogen bonds,, which successfully inhibits moisture permeation. New Fullerene Design Enables Efficient Passivation of Surface Traps in High Performance P-I-N Heterojunction Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Defect states within perovskite crystals are thought to induce undesired charge recombination and photocurrent hysteresis in perovskite solar cells. Although the processing of perovskite films with electron-rich molecules that can efficiently passivate the surface traps, the exact mechanism remains unclear. As the electron-rich units are key components for such a function, a rigorous analysis using controlled electron density in passivators can provide the means to understand these underlying mechanisms and thereby improve future improvements. In the study reported here, we combined electron-rich functional groups with fullerenes to design a new series of hydrophilic fullerene derivatives, in which each phenyl group of the diphenylmethanofullerene (DPM) moiety was decorated with an oligoether (OE) side group. These new materials were introduced as alternative electron transport layers (ETLs) to replace the commonly used PCBM in p-i-n planar-heterojunction perovskite solar cells. Our tests indicate that electron-rich OE chains can both passivate perovskite trap states and reduce the work function of the metal cathode. By adjusting the numbers of OE chains, relevant properties such as the energy levels, charge carrier mobilities, surface energy and dipole layer features could be tuned at the interfaces. Furthermore, devices with these fullerene ETLs showed significant improvements in power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to devices with PCBM ETLs. A high PCE of 16% was achieved by applying the monoadduct fullerene derivative C70-DPM-OE as the ETL of the device.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Room‐temperature‐processed TiO2 (R‐Lt‐TiO2) electron transporting layers (ETLs) possess low conductivity and connectivity, resulting in poor photovoltaic performance. Herein, an ethanol (EtOH)‐soluble, highly conducting fullerene derivative, C60RT6, was used as an additive for Lt‐TiO2 ETLs. Room‐temperature processed nanocomposite ETL (R‐Fu/Lt‐TiO2) is prepared simply by spin coating a C60RT6 and G‐TiO2 NPs (TiO2 nanoparticle prepared by grinding the bulk TiO2 powder) mixture. R‐Fu/Lt‐TiO2 has better aligned with the frontier orbitals of the FAxMA1−xPbI3, better continuity, conductivity, flatness, and higher surface hydrophilicity compared to Lt‐TiO2 ETL. Perovskite films spin coated on R‐Fu/Lt‐TiO2 ETLs also have slightly larger grains and thickness compared to those deposited on Lt‐TiO2. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) based on a R‐Fu/Lt‐TiO2 ETL possess higher power conversion efficiency (PCE, up to 20% on glass substrate), less (negligible) current hysteresis, and better long‐term stability compared to those using R‐Lt‐TiO2 as an ETL. The flexible PSC (used indium tin oxide/polyethylene terephthalate (ITO/PET) as a substrate) with a R‐Fu/Lt‐TiO2 ETL achieves a PCE of 18.06% and retains 90% of the initial PCE after 500 bending cycles with a bending radius of 6 mm. The PCE of the flexible cell with a Lt‐TiO2 ETL is only 8.2%, and loses 60% of the initial value after 500 bending cycles. </section>

High‐Performance Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells via Precise Control of Electron Transport Layer

Abstract:Flexible perovskite solar cells (f‐PSCs) have attracted great attention due to their promising commercial prospects. However, the performance of f‐PSCs is generally worse than that of their rigid counterparts. Herein, it is found that the unsatisfactory performance of planar heterojunction (PHJ) f‐PSCs can be attributed to the undesirable morphology of electron transport layer (ETL), which results from the rough surface of the flexible substrate. Precise control over the thickness and morphology of ETL tin dioxide (SnO2) not only reduces the reflectance of the indium tin oxide (ITO) on polyethylene 2,6‐naphthalate (PEN) substrate and enhances photon collection, but also decreases the trap‐state densities of perovskite films and the charge transfer resistance, leading to a great enhancement of device performance. Consequently, the f‐PSCs, with a structure of PEN/ITO/SnO2/perovskite/Spiro‐OMeTAD/Ag, exhibit a power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 19.51% and a steady output of 19.01%. Furthermore, the f‐PSCs show a robust bending resistance and maintain about 95% of initial PCE after 6000 bending cycles at a bending radius of 8 mm, and they present an outstanding long‐term stability and retain about 90% of the initial performance after >1000 h storage in air (10% relative humidity) without encapsulation.

Abstract:All-inorganic CsPbI3 perovskites have great potential in tandem cells in combination with other photovoltaic devices. However, CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) still face a huge challenge, resulting in a low power conversion efficiency (PCE) relative to organic-inorganic PSCs. In this work, we introduced tetrabutylammonium acetate (TBAAc) as a buffer layer between the SnO2 electron-transport layer (ETL) and CsPbI3 all-inorganic perovskite film interface for the first time. TBAAc not only improved the conductivity of SnO2 ETL but also formed a 1D TBAPbI3 layer between the SnO2 ETL and the 3D CsPbI3 all-inorganic perovskite film, thereby enhancing the stability and passivating the surface defects of the CsPbI3 perovskite to fabricate high-efficiency carbon-counter electrode (CE)-based CsPbI3 solar cells. We fabricated carbon-CE-based hole-transporting layer ( HTL)-free PSCs with an FTO/SnO2/TBAAc/CsPbI3/C structure. The open-circuit voltage (Voc), short circuit current density (Jsc), PCE, and fill factor of the champion CsPbI3 PSCs simultaneously enhanced to 1.08 V, 17.48 mA/cm2, 12.79, and 67.8%, respectively. This PCE is currently one of the high efficiencies reported for the above planar-structured carbon-CE-based CsPbI3 PSCs to date. Moreover, the optimized device exhibits excellent stability, which retained over 83% of its initial PCE after 350 h. This work provides a facile way of simultaneous optimization of the SnO2 ETL and the CsPbI3 perovskite layer to fabricate stable and high-efficiency carbon-CE-based CsPbI3 PSCs.

Abstract:A stable and compact fullerene electron transport layer (ETL) is crucial for high-performance inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, traditional fullerene-based ETLs like C60 and PCBM are prone to aggregate under operational conditions, a challenge recently recognized by academic and industrial researchers. Here, we designed and synthesized a novel cross-linkable fullerene molecule, bis((3-methyloxetan-3-yl)methyl) malonate-C60 monoadduct (BCM), for use as an ETL in PSCs. Upon a low-temperature annealing at 100 °C, BCM undergoes in-situ cross-linking to form a robust cross-linked BCM (CBCM) film, which demonstrates excellent electron mobility and a suitable band structure for efficient PSCs. Our results show that PSCs incorporating CBCM-based ETL achieve an impressive efficiency of 25.89% (certified: 25.36%), significantly surpassing the 23.25% efficiency of PCBM-based devices. The intramolecular covalent interactions within CBCM films effectively prevent aggregation and enhance film compactness, creating an internal encapsulation layer that mitigates the decomposition and ion migration of perovskite components. Consequently, CBCM-based PSCs show exceptional stability, maintaining 97.8% of their initial efficiency after 1000 hours of maximum power point tracking, compared to only 78.6% retention in PCBM-based devices after less than 820 hours.

Abstract:Compared with silicon-based solar cells, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs) possess a distinct advantage, i.e., its application in the flexible field. However, the efficiency of the flexible device is still lower than that of the rigid one. First, it is found that the dense formamidinium (FA)-based perovskite film can be obtained with the help of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) via low pressure-assisted method. In addition, CH3NH3Cl (MACl) as the additive can preferentially form MAPbCl(3-)(x)I(x) perovskite seeds to induce perovskite phase transition and crystal growth. Finally, by using FAI center dot PbI2 center dot NMP+x%MACl as the precursor, i.e., ligand and additive synergetic process, a FA-based perovskite film with a large grain size, high crystallinity, and low trap density is obtained on a flexible substrate under ambient conditions due to the synergetic effect, e.g., MACl can enhance the crystallization of the intermediate phase of FAI center dot PbI2 center dot NMP. As a result, a record efficiency of 19.38% in flexible planar PSCs is achieved, and it can retain about 89% of its initial power conversion efficiency (PCE) after 230 days without encapsulation under ambient conditions. The PCE retains 92% of the initial value after 500 bending cycles with a bending radii of 10 mm. The results show a robust way to fabricate highly efficient flexible PSCs.

Abstract:For solar cell applications, Sn-based hybrid perovskites have drawn particular interest due to their environmental friendliness. Here, a thin layer of C-60 pyrrolidine tris-acid (CPTA) is found essential for achieving high efficiency with planar solar cells of Sn-based perovskites. As a result, a power conversion efficiency of 7.40% is achieved for {en}FASnI(3) solar cells with a planar n-i-p architecture, and the device exhibits excellent stability in air. For the first time, highly efficient Sn-based hybrid perovskite solar cells on n-i-p architecture are achieved. A V-oc of 0.72 V is highlighted as the highest V-oc ever reported for FASnI(3) solar cells.

Abstract:Due to the matching between the (110) crystal plane of PbI2 and the (220) crystal plane of MAPbI3, TFEP induces the epitaxial growth of PbI2 along MAPbI3. As a result, the device efficiency and stability are significantly improved. Hole‐transporting layer‐free carbon‐based perovskite solar cells (HTL‐free C‐PSCs) hold great promise for photovoltaic applications due to their low cost and outstanding stability. However, the low power conversion efficiency (PCE) of HTL‐free C‐PSCs mainly results from grain boundaries (GBs). Here, epitaxial growth is proposed to rationally design a hybrid nanostructure of PbI2 nanosheets/perovskite with the desired photovoltaic properties. A post‐treatment technique using tri(2,2,2‐trifluoromethyl) phosphate (TFEP) to induce in situ epitaxial growth of PbI2 nanosheets at the GBs of perovskite films realizes high‐performance HTL‐free C‐PSCs. The structure model and high‐resolution transmission electron microscope unravel the epitaxial growth mechanism. The epitaxial growth of oriented PbI2 nanosheets generates the PbI2/perovskite heterojunction, which not only passivates defects but forms type‐I band alignment, avoiding carrier loss. Additionally, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, 31P NMR, and 1H NMR spectra reveal the passivation effect and hydrogen bonding interaction between TFEP and perovskite. As a result, the VOC is remarkably boosted from 1.04 to 1.10 V, leading to a substantial gain in PCE from 14.97% to 17.78%. In addition, the unencapsulated PSC maintains the initial PCE of 80.1% for 1440 h under air ambient of 40% RH. The work offers a fresh perspective on the rational design of high‐performance HTL‐free C‐PSCs.
