Abstract:Although near-field microscopy has allowed optical imaging with sub-20 nm resolution, the optical throughput of this technique is notoriously small. As a result, applications such as optical data storage have been impractical. However, with an optimized near-field transducer design, we show that optical energy can be transferred efficiently to a lossy metallic medium and yet remain confined in a spot that is much smaller than the diffraction limit. Such a transducer was integrated into a recording head and flown over a magnetic recording medium on a rotating disk. Optical power from a semiconductor laser at a wavelength of 830 nm was efficiently coupled by the transducer into the medium to heat a 70-nm track above the Curie point in nanoseconds and record data at an areal density of ∼375 Tb m −2 . This transducer design should scale to even smaller optical spots.

Abstract:All-optical magnetization switching with features of low-power consumption and high writing speed is a promising road map to satisfy the demand for volume data storage. To promote denser and faster magnetic recording technologies, herein, all-optical helicity-dependent switching (AO-HDS) in multi-layer magnetic recording is proposed based on the chromatic aberration of an optical lens (Thorlabs's N-BK7 plano-convex uncoated lens). The power of the incident beams and the thickness of the multi-layer magnetic recording film are designed carefully. Besides, the uniformity of this multi-layer magnetic recording is optimized. At last, a prototype system of information multiplexing based on this multi-layer magnetic recording technology is constructed as well. Flexible and controllable magnetization reversals in different layers are also demonstrated by tuning the wavelength and helicity of working beams. We believe that such a prototype system can pave the way for increasing the storage density in an effective and low-cost mode.

Abstract:We have successfully demonstrated longitudinal recording at areal density of 130 Gb/in(2) at a data rate as high as 170 Mbps (21 MB/s) and at a bit-aspect-ratio (BAR) of 2.9, using merged inductive-write/spin-valve-read heads on low noise thin film disks. The heads were fabricated with the standard photolithography and wafer pole trimming used in our currently available commercial products. The reader is a bottom synthetic spin valve (BSSV) with a 0.09 mum gap, and the writer has a conventionally trimmed pole with 0.09 mum gap. The reader magnetic read width (MRW) was measured at 0.10 mum. At read bias of similar to4 mA we measured reader sensitivity as high as 20 mV/mum. The write head was also optimized for tracks as narrow as 0.14 mum operating at overwrite (OW) of 36 dB and nonlinear transition shift (NLTS) better than -25 dB at 610 kBPI, without precomp. Using conventional media we measured total spectral SNRsimilar to18 dB. The media to electronics noise ratio was 4.8, showing that we are still operating in a media noise limited system. Low-flying air bearing surface (ABS) design and advanced pole tip recession (PTR) control were required to achieve magnetic spacing of about 15 nm. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) has attracted increasing attention as one of the most promising future techniques for ultra-high-density magnetic recording beyond the current limit of 1 Tb in(-2). Localized surface plasmon resonance plays an important role in HAMR by providing a highly focused optical spot for heating the recording medium within a small volume. In this work, we report an aluminum near-field transducer (NFT) based on a novel bow-tie design. At an operating wavelength of 450 nm, the proposed transducer can generate a 35 nm spot size inside the magnetic recording medium, corresponding to a recording density of up to 2 Tb in(-2). A highly integrated micro-nano-optics design is also proposed to ensure process compatibility and corrosion-resistance of the aluminum NFT. Our work has demonstrated the feasibility of using aluminum as a plasmonic material for HAMR, with advantages of reduced cost and improved efficiency compared to traditional noble metals.

Abstract:Employing plasmonic antennas for subdiffraction focusing of light on recording media requires to take into account the complete structure of the medium, including dielectric cover layers. We find, with finite difference time domain simulations, that optical energy transfer to the magnetic recording layer is most efficient for an off-resonant antenna. Furthermore, we show that the focal spot in the magnetic film is well below the diffraction limit, making nanoscale all-optical magnetic data recording achievable.

Abstract:This paper presents numerical simulation of high-density magnetic recording process with perpendicular head and media. The simulation is based on three-dimensional micromagnetic model of the media and an analytical model of the single pole perpendicular recording write field. The physical problem is modeled with a hybrid FEM-BEM formulation and the evaluation is accelerated using a new Fast Fourier Transform on Multipoles method. The model is suitable for studying magnetization transition configuration in perpendicular media with softmagnetic underlayer, and in turn can be used to derive microtrack model for evaluating the performance of recording systems.

Abstract:In the paper, the authors review the Current Perpendicular-to-Plane (CPP) read heads for ultra-high recording densities. First the advantages of CPP heads over Current-in-Plane (CIP) heads are presented. Then the technologies including tunnelling magnetoresistance that has been used in read heads are discussed. Last, noise and instability issues in CPP heads associated with the specific technologies are analysed from the angles of understanding the microscopic mechanisms and of optimising the head fabrication process.

Abstract:With features of fast and energy-efficient data writing, all-optical helicity-dependent switching (AO-HDS) has emerged as a competitive technology to satisfy the demand for the next-generation volume data storage. Unfortunately, to switch the magnetizations in different positions of the magnetic-optic film, the laser beam, the objective lens, or the magnetic recording film should be moved, limiting the advantage of AO-HDS in fast data writing. To achieve on-the-fly magnetization switching, the induced magnetization should be fully controllable. In this Letter, by focusing an azimuthally polarized vortex beam (APVB) and introducing an additional phase, a feasible strategy constructing subwavelength light-induced pure longitudinal multi-magnetization spots is proposed. In addition, the position of the multi-magnetization spots can be dynamically controlled. The distributions of the focused APVBs with different orbital angular momentum, and the induced magnetizations are surveyed. We believe that this is a practical and flexible three-dimensional magnetic recording technique with dynamic control of the recording position.

Abstract:Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) is a future roadmap technology to overcome the superparamagnetic limit in high density magnetic recording. Existing HAMR schemes depend on a simultaneous magnetic stimulation and light-induced local heating of the information carrier. To achieve high-density recorded data, near-field plasmonic transducers have been proposed as light concentrators. Here we suggest and investigate in detail an alternative approach exploiting a far-field focusing device that can focus light into sub-50 nm hot-spots in the magnetic recording layer using a laser source operating at 473 nm. It is based on a recently introduced super-oscillatory flat lens improved with the use of solid immersion, giving an effective numerical aperture as high as 4.17. The proposed solution is robust and easy to integrate with the magnetic recording head thus offering a competitive advantage over plasmonic technology.

Abstract:Tailoring of the magnetic field induced by the inverse Faraday effect has received much attention due to its potential applications in data storage. However, many issues remain, hindering the application of all-optical magnetic storage technology, e.g. the challenges in the speed and precision of recording and deleting different bits of information in different positions of the magnetic recording film. To achieve on-the-fly magnetic recording and deletion of information with a high degree of accuracy, pure longitudinal magnetization spots with opposite directions are theoretically produced in this paper. Firstly, twin pure longitudinal magnetization spots with opposite directions are induced by tailoring the amplitude and phase of a tightly focused azimuthally polarized beam (APB). These pure longitudinal magnetization spots with opposite directions open up a route toward writing and deleting recording bits with high writing speed as well as a high degree of accuracy. Then, we proved that this strategy can also be used to generate multiple longitudinal magnetization spots with opposite directions, which will facilitate high-density 3D optomagnetic recording. Compared with traditional methods, which require complex optical systems to generate longitudinal magnetization spots with opposite directions, we only need to tailor the amplitude and phase of the APB. More importantly, the directions of the induced magnetization spots can be tuned easily, and the magnetization spots have the same intensity distribution.

Abstract:A prototype of a kind of two-bit data recording head based on the Ni <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0.85</sub> Co <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0.15</sub> thin film devices is proposed. Thin film devices with a two-terminal structure were fabricated by a two-step e-beam lithography (EBL) and e-beam evaporation (EBE) process, ensuring that this kind of devices possesses M-shaped magnetoresistance (MR) curves. The reading and writing of data can be realized by adjusting the magnetic field to change the magnetoresistance value. The consistency of the devices has been also experimentally confirmed.

Abstract:In spintronic applications, there is a constant demand for lower power consumption, high densities, and fast writing speed of data storage. All-optical switching (AOS) is a technique that uses laser pulses to switch the magnetic state of a recording medium without any external devices, offering unsurpassed recording rates and a simple structure. Despite extensive research on the mechanism of AOS, low energy consumption and fast magnetization reversing remain challenging engineering questions. In this paper, we propose a newly designed cavity-enhanced AOS in GdCo alloy, which promotes optical absorption by twofold, leading to a 50% reduction in energy consumption. Additionally, the time-resolved measurement shows that the time of reversing magnetization reduces at the same time. This new approach makes AOS an ideal solution for energy-effective and fast magnetic recording, paving the way for future developments in high-speed, low-power-consumption data recording devices.

Abstract:The generation and control of nanoscale magnetic fields are of fundamental interest in material science and a wide range of applications. Nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging quantum spintronics for example require single spin control with high precision and nanoscale spatial resolution using fast switchable magnetic fields with large gradients. Yet, characterizing those fields on nanometer length scales at high band width with arbitrary orientation has not been possible so far. Here we demonstrate single electron and nuclear spin coherent control using the magnetic field of a hard disc drive write head. We use single electron spins for measuring fields with high spatial resolution and single nuclear spins for large band width measurements. We are able to derive field profiles from coherent spin Rabi oscillations close to GHz in fields with gradients of up to 10 mT/nm and measure all components of a static and dynamic magnetic field independent of its orientation. Our method paves the way for precision measurement of the magnetic fields of nanoscale write heads important for future miniaturization of the devices.

Abstract:Micromagnetic writing on 8 nm grains and readback with various readers have been studied. For a conventional writer recording a pseudorandom binary sequence with 2 Tb/in2 channel bit density, user densities of 1.52 and 1.09 Tb/in2 could be achieved with a rotated single sense head (RSH) and a normally oriented single head (NSH), respectively, using 2 nm sampling period, a minimum mean squared error equalizer, and a Viterbi detector. Simulation indicated that an RSH with multiple scans and 2-D equalization provided better resistance to a skew angle of 15° than an NSH. An optimized shingled writer was proposed; simulation indicated that an RSH and rotated head array could reach a user areal density of 3.76 and 4.52 Tb/in2 for two grains per channel bit, which was close to the predicted maximum user areal density (4.66 Tb/in2) for this grain size obtained with an ideal writer and reader.

Abstract:The dynamic performance of heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) on different media is investigated. Signal and signal-to-noise ratio enhancement are achieved in high coercivity perpendicular media with the aid of laser heating. Linear recording density is increased while saturation write current is lowered. Trailing field partial erasure is observed in lower coercivity media with a ring head, which causes signal reduction with increasing write current or application of a laser. Precautions should be taken against partial erasure in overall recording system optimization of HAMR in order to achieve ultrahigh recording density.
