Abstract:SO2, a typical component in coal-fired flue gas, always results in a decreased Hg-0 removal efficiency of the catalysts/adsorbents. Therefore, developing a catalyst/adsorbent with satisfactory sulfur resistance constitutes an important step in achieving the goal of mercury emission reduction. In this study, we modified MnOx-CeOx mixed oxide with CuCl2, aiming to enhance its SO2-tolerant ability and reveal the relevant promotional mechanisms. As 200 ppm SO2 was introduced, MnOx-CeOx suffered from deactivation with its Hg-0 removal efficiency decreasing from similar to 100% to similar to 80%. With increasing the SO2 concentration, this deactivation phenomenon was more pronounced. This was because SO2 had a greater affinity to MnOx-CeOx, which would drive the adsorbed Hg-0 away from the active sites. Besides, SO2 was able to rob the oxygen atoms from HgO formed on the MnOx-CeOx surface, which increased the Hg-0 concentration in the working gas and thus explained the decreased Hg-0 removal efficiency with SO2. Given the doping of CuCl2, the highly active Cl- favored the efficient oxidation of Hg-0, making the adverse factors arising from the Hg-0-SO2 competitive behaviors less influencing. Moreover, the produced HgCl2 tended to emit into the working gas instead of being stabilized on the material surface, which could be free from the reduction to Hg-0 by SO2. As a result, CuCl2-promoted MnOx-CeOx exhibited superior sulfur resistance; >95% Hg-0 removal efficiency was well-retained during the 320-min deactivation cycle. This result was vital to the stable operation of the MnOx-CeOx-based materials in coal-fired flue gas.

Abstract:The effects of flue gas components (O-2, CO2, SO2 and NO) on the Hg-0 removal of mechanochemical S2Cl2-modified BC (S2Cl2-MC) were explored based on the Hg-0 removal efficiency/amount, Hg-0 adsorption amount and Hg2+ escape amount/ratio. The BET, FTIR, XPS, and Hg-TPD were used to obtain relevant physicochemical properties. It shows O-2 and CO2 promote the Hg2+ escape but inhibit Hg-0 adsorption. O-2 slightly affects Hg-0 removal, while CO2 promotes it. 400 similar to 800 ppm SO2 slightly affect Hg-0 removal, while 1200 ppm SO2 facilitates Hg2+ escape and Hg0 adsorption. SO2 affects Hg2+ escape ratio little. As NO concentration increases, the Hg2+ escape is promoted while Hg-0 adsorption is inhibited. O-2 and CO2 do not change the mercury forms. SO2 and NO promote the production of HgSO4 and Hg(NO3)(2), respectively. The Hg-0 adsorption might mainly depend on the physical properties of adsorbents.
Effects of Coal-Fired Flue Gas Components on Mercury Removal by the Mechanochemical S-Modified Petroleum Coke

Abstract:In this work, the effects of coal-fired flue gas components (O2, CO2, SO2, and NO) on the Hg0 removal by the promising mercury removal adsorbent mechanochemical S-modified petroleum coke were characterized and analyzed in terms of the Hg0 removal efficiency, mercury adsorption capacity, and mercury mass balance. The results show that the mechanochemical S-modified petroleum coke with a theoretical sulfur content of 21% (named TSC-21) is the best candidate for mercury removal based on the Hg0 removal efficiency, Hg0 removal capacity, and difference ratio of Hg0 removal capacity (anti-interference ability) in the basic and full-component simulated flue gas atmosphere (N2 + O2 + CO2, N2 + O2 + CO2 + SO2 + NO). The maximum value (MV) and stable value (SV) of the Hg0 removal efficiency of TSC-21 in the basic simulated flue gas atmosphere are 99.25% (MV) and 91.17% (SV), respectively. O2, CO2, and NO all promote the Hg0 removal by the adsorbent, but they benefit the Hg0 oxidation while inhibiting the Hg0 adsorption. The promoting effect of O2 on the Hg0 removal by TSC-21 is affected by the reaction time, which is especially obvious after 1 min. The presence of SO2 inhibits the oxidation and adsorption of Hg0, which in turn reduces the Hg0 removal performance of the adsorbent. The improving effects on the oxidative escape of Hg0 by CO2 is higher than that by NO and O2. TSC-21 acts more as an oxidant than an adsorbent for Hg0 removal.
Catalytic oxidation of elemental mercury in flue gas on MnO_x/α-Al_2O_3

Abstract:Manganese oxide impregnated on α-alumina(MnOx/α-Al2O3) was employed as catalyst on the catalytic oxidation of Hg0 in the presence of hydrogen chloride.The optimized temperature of the catalytic oxidation reaction was around 300℃, where the Hg0 oxidation efficiency was up to 91% in the presence of 20mL/m3 HCl.Hg0 oxidation efficiency was kept over 90% when the space velocity was in range of 8000 h-1 to 32000 h-1.However, it decreased quickly when the space velocity was increased from 32000 h-1 to 96000 h-1.SO2 inhibited the mercury oxidation by occupying the activity sites on the catalyst, and the oxidation efficiency was reduced by about 20% in the presence of 500mL/m3 SO2.Meanwhile, the main reaction mechanism of catalytic oxidation was discussed.

Abstract:How to make elemental mercury removed efficiently is the key point for the control of mercury emission from the coal-fired flue gas.To obtain a high conversion from elemental mercury to its oxidation state,which can be easily captured by flue gas desulfurization systems,some catalysts were employed to assist with the oxidation of elemental mercury in the presence of hydrogen chloride,and four metals(strontium,cerium,tungsten,molybdenum) were used tentatively to modify the Mn-catalyst to improve their tolerance capacity to sulfur dioxide(SO2).The results showed that the manganese oxide displayed the highest catalytic oxidative efficiency at 573 K,and the removal efficiency of mercury by manganese can reach 93% and 78% without SO2 and with 1 400 mg/m3 SO2,respectively.Once modified with molybdenum,the removal efficiency of manganese oxides was above 90% with 1 400 mg/m3 SO2,which was significantly higher than the catalysts modified with the other elements.

Abstract:A series of V2O5-Cr2O3/TiO2 catalysts with various chromium loadings prepared by the impregnation method were studied for Hg-0 oxidation and NO reduction. The results indicate that Cr2O3-modified V2O5/TiO2 exhibited improved catalytic activity for both Hg-0 oxidation and NO reduction. In fact, with the addition of 5% Cr2O3 to the V/Ti catalyst, the mercury oxidation efficiency increased significantly from 6.5% to 97% in the presence of O-2 at 350 degrees C, and its SCR performance also improved in the temperature range of 250 degrees C to 400 degrees C. To explore the effect of individual flue gas components on Hg-0 oxidation, a series of activity tests were conducted over 1% Cr-V/Ti at 350 degrees C, and it was found that O-2 and HCl promote mercury oxidation, while SO2 and H2O exhibited a somewhat inhibitive influence. H-2-TPR and XPS results indicated that the enhanced catalytic performance of V2O5-Cr2O3/TiO2 is attributable to the synergetic interactions between the two active phases.

Abstract:The MnO2/TiO2 (TM5) catalyst modified by molybdenum was used for mercury oxidation at different temperatures in a fixed-bed reactor. The addition of molybdenum into TM5 was identified as significantly enlarging the optimal temperature range for mercury oxidation. The optimal mercury oxidation temperature of TM5 was only 200 °C, with an oxidation efficiency of 95%. However, the mercury oxidation efficiency of TM5 was lower than 60% at other temperatures. As for MnO2–MoO3/TiO2 (TM5Mo5), the mercury oxidation efficiency was above 80% at 200–350 °C. In particular at 250 °C, the mercury oxidation efficiency of TM5Mo5 was over 93%. Otherwise, the gaseous O2, which could supplement the lattice oxygen in the catalytic reaction, played an important role in the process of mercury oxidation over TM5Mo5. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that mercury oxidized by O2 over TM5Mo5 followed the Mars–Maessen mechanism.

Abstract:To investigate the mercury oxidation ability of V2O5–MoO3/TiO2 in actual flue gas, a test was performed in a coal-fired power plant. The mercury oxidation ability of the operating selective catalytic reduction (SCR) deNOx system was also detected. The mercury conversion of V2O5–MoO3/TiO2 exceeded 90% in the actual flue gas, and the commercial SCR system almost lost the ability. This is mainly because the actual SCR catalyst has been running for 35,000h and the test of V2O5–MoO3/TiO2 was in absence of NH3. To clarify the assumption, a laboratory experiment was carried out. V2O5–MoO3/TiO2 and the fresh commercial SCR catalyst were tested in the simulated flue gases in presence and absence of NH3. The results indicate that the mercury conversion of V2O5–MoO3/TiO2 is higher than that of the fresh commercial SCR catalyst even in the presence of NH3. The mercury oxidation ability of the fresh commercial SCR catalyst is stronger than that of the actual service ones. However, it is found that NH3 would inhibit mercury oxidation over V2O5–MoO3/TiO2 in the experiments. The main reason is that NH3 could compete with HCl for the same active sites on the catalyst surface.

Abstract:Systematic experimental research has been conducted in a fix-bed reactor system to determine the impact of coal-fired flue gas species and temperature on mercury oxidation. This work focuses on the temperatures range of 200°C to 800°C to demonstrate that temperature is a critical factor for the effect of the gas components on the mercury oxidation process. Among the investigated gases, hydrogen chloride is essential for oxidizing the elemental mercury. Nitrogen oxide was also found to have a positive correlation with the mercury oxidation when hydrogen chloride was present. Sulfur dioxide can either promote or inhibit the oxidation depending on the conditions; however, when nitrogen oxide is also present, sulfur dioxide has a negative impact. Ammonia exhibits an strong inhibitory effect. Several plausible mercury oxidation pathways are suggested in this paper.

Abstract:Co/TiO2 catalysts prepared by sol–gel method were studied for gas-phase mercury oxidation in this paper. Experimental results revealed that the optimal loading of Co was 7.5%, which yielded more than 90% oxidation efficiency within the temperature range of 120–330°C. The high activity was mainly attributed to the enrichment of well dispersed Co3O4. We also found that oxygen performed a key role in mercury oxidation process, while HCl could corrode the oxidized mercury and release it to gas phase. Thereafter, a modified Mars–Maessen mechanism was proposed and the possible simultaneous oxidization of NO and mercury was studied.

Abstract:Although the oxidation of elemental mercury (Hg-0) on catalyst can be significantly affected by acid gases, its mechanism is still unclear. This study used in situ DRIFT to research the influence of acid gases (NO, HCl and SO2) on the performance of mercury oxidation on catalyst CeO2(5)-WO3(9)/TiO2. The catalyst could capture a large amount of Hg-0 on the surface yet not oxidize all Hg-0 into gaseous oxidation mercury (Hg2+) due to the limit of oxidation sites (CeO2). The addition of NO and HCl improved the mercury oxidation efficiency because this process transformed the adsorbed mercury on the catalyst into gaseous Hg2+ and formed new active sites. The in situ DRIFTS result indicated that NO2 and nitrate served as active sites for mercury oxidation. The formation of active chlorine (Cl*) via HCl adsorption on the catalyst promoted the transformation of mercury into gaseous HgCl2. The NO and HCl addition could keep the mercury oxidation efficiency over 91.5% with the presence of 500-3000 ppm SO2 and increase the SO2 resistance of the catalyst. The reaction of NO and Hg-0 conforms to the Eley-Ridcal mechanism, while the reaction of HCl and Hg-0 follows the Languir-Hinshelwood mechanism.

Abstract:The removal of gas-phase elemental mercury was investigated in CO2-enriched flue gas (oxy-fuel combustion) using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts (V2O5–WO3/TiO2). Experiments were carried out using various concentrations of CO2, O2, NH3, NO and temperatures. The removal of NO and Hg0 in the CO2-enriched flue gas condition increased with the temperature and decreased again, the maximum Hg0 and NO removal was observed at approximately 65% and 85%, respectively at 250–350°C, which indicated that Hg0 and NO could be simultaneously removed over V2O5–WO3/TiO2. The presence of enriched CO2 (80vol.%) assisted the Hg0 removal and inhibited the NO removal, whereas the effect of NO on the Hg0 removal varied according to the NO concentrations. The presence of Hg0 promoted NO removal in CO2-enriched flue gas at low temperature 200–300°C whereas inhibited NO removal greatly at high temperature (>300°C). In the SCR system, the presence of NH3 inhibited the Hg0 removal greatly. The mercury species analysis and catalyst characterization results showed that the removal of Hg0 over V2O5–WO3/TiO2 at 250–350°C was mainly attributed to the oxidation of Hg0. Mechanisms of the oxidation of Hg0 at 250–350°C in the CO2-enriched flue gas condition over the V2O5–WO3/TiO2 catalysts were: (1) the reaction between vanadia oxide and Hg0 to form adsorbed mercuric oxide (HgO(ad)–V2O4); (2) the oxidation of Hg0 by chemisorbed oxygen on the surface of catalyst; (3) the oxidation of Hg0 by function group of CO to form HgO and COC.
Ag-Mo Modified SCR Catalyst for a Co-Beneficial Oxidation of Elemental Mercury at Wide Temperature Range

Abstract:V2O5-MoO3-TiO2 (V-Mo-Ti) is often used as a selective catalytic reduction catalyst for NOx from coal-fired flue gas. The performance of a V-Mo-Ti catalyst for the oxidation of elemental mercury (Hg-0) was investigated. It was found that Mo was resistant toward sulfur dioxide and can enhance the Hg-0 adsorption capacity. Ag was employed to enhance the Hg-0 oxidation reaction and can enlarge reaction temperature window. Doping with Ag can significantly enhance the oxidation of Hg-0, and adding only 0.5% Ag can keep Hg-0 oxidation efficiency to approximately 90% with 5 ppm HCl, with an increase of 20-40% compared to that of V-Mo-Ti catalyst. Besides, the reaction temperature window of catalyst was enlarged from 150 to 400 degrees C. TEM and XPS characterization data indicated that Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the Mo/V-Ti carrier, maintaining Ag-Mo/V-Ti at a higher oxidation state. Furthermore, the TPR and Deacon reaction tests suggested that the Ag dopant might enhance the redox behavior, which facilitates the Deacon or semi-Deacon reactions for HCl activation. In addition, Hg-0 desorption and breakthrough experiments and mercury valence state change experiments were carried out to investigate the Hg catalytic oxidation mechanisms at various temperature ranges. Abstract:Ferrite-structured adsorbents have demonstrated high potential for adsorbing zero-valent mercury (Hg0), but their performance in complex flue gas is not well understood. This study investigated the effects of HCl, O2, and SO2 on Hg0 oxidation capacity using Mn0.5Cu0.5Fe2O4 adsorbent. The morphology and microstructure of Mn0.5Cu0.5Fe2O4 were examined, and mass transfer theoretical analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments were conducted to explore the synergistic effect of HCl, SO2, and O2 on mercury removal. The results indicated that the adsorbent achieved a high Hg0 removal efficiency of approximately 98% when HCl, SO2, and O2 coexisted in the flue gas at 120 °C. The reaction can be separated into three steps. In the first step, HCl dominates the reaction, resulting in the formation of HgCl2 and H2O. In the second step, oxygen defect sites accelerate the breakdown of O2 into chemisorbed oxygen. In the third step, the chemisorbed oxygen combines with Hg0 and SO2 to generate HgO and HgSO4. This study has important implications for the development of ferrite-structured adsorbents in complex flue gas.

Abstract:To improve the ability of commercial selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst to catalyze the oxidation of gaseous elemental mercury, Fe2O3 was introduced. Modifying with Fe2O3 can significantly enhance the elemental mercury oxidation ability of SCR catalyst. Fe2O3/SCR prepared by an impregnation method was employed as mercury oxidation catalysts in the simulated flue gas, and the role of Fe2O3 was investigated. The temperature window was from 150 to 450°C. In this study, Fe2O3/SCR (1% Fe, wt.) was found to be an optimal catalyst with a mercury oxidation efficiency of higher than 90% at 350°C using a simulated flue gas. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer Emmet Teller (BET) measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicated that the Fe2O3 was well-dispersed on the surface of SCR. The surface areas and catalytic oxidation activity were not consistent patterns, and the diameter of the mercury atom was much smaller than the pore diameter of the Fe2O3/SCR catalysts. Loading content of Fe2O3 was a very important factor for the removal of mercury. HCl was the most effective flue gas component responsible for the Hg0 oxidation. However, SO2 had a slight inhibition effect on Hg0 oxidation. Furthermore, change experiment of a mercury valence state was performed. And the mechanism of Hg0 oxidation was also discussed.
Co-benefit of Ag and Mo for the Catalytic Oxidation of Elemental Mercury

Abstract:The performance of catalyst-combining silver (Ag) and molybdenum (Mo) for elemental mercury (Hg-0) oxidation was clearly improved, and the experimental results demonstrated the synergy between Ag and Mo. The physical and chemical characterizations indicated that Ag-0 and Ag2MoO4 nanoparticles existed on the surface of TiO2 for Ag(2%)-Mo-Ti. Furthermore, the oxidation ability of Mo-Ti was enhanced, and the redox temperature decreased after silver was added. The gas component analysis demonstrated that HCl was the main catalytic component, and the catalyst still had high oxidation efficiency when O-2 was nonexistent. Ag(2%)-Mo-Ti had a superior resistance toward SO2. Furthermore, Hg-0 breakthrough, desorption, and HCl pretreated experiments were conducted to investigate the catalytic mechanisms of Hg-0 oxidation. The results indicated that Ag had an absorbency role on HCl and Hg-0, and Mo and chemical adsorption oxygen had a catalytic effect on HCl. The performances of mercury removal over the catalysts were tested in simulated flue gas with 80–100μgm−3 Hg0, 8% O2, 10ppm HCl, 8% H2O, 800ppm SO2 and balanced with N2. Results indicated that about 95% of the Hg0 could be removed by hydrogen chloride over the CeO2–WO3/TiO2 catalysts in the presence of O2, and the HgO that formed was effectively converted to mercury chloride when hydrogen chloride was added to the system. The Hg0 removal efficiency was found to be slightly but significantly affected by H2O and SO2 addition. Water vapor slightly inhibited the Hg0 removal efficiency, due to the competitive adsorption. By contrast, SO2 promoted the oxidation reactions, resulting in higher Hg0 removal efficiencies. The Hg-TPD and SO2-TPD results indicated that less negative effect of Hg adsorption with/without water vapor and less adsorption mass of SO2 might be responsible for the tolerance of the catalysts to H2O and SO2. From the characterization results, the BET surface areas had no significant influence on the catalytic performance. The XRD pattern indicated that cubic CeO2 crystallite was the crystalline form on the surface. The XPS and H2-TPR results suggested that Ce4+ oxide was the main form of Ce on the catalysts surfaces, which was beneficial for the Hg0 removal reactions.
Elemental Mercury Oxidation over Manganese-Based Perovskite-Type Catalyst at Low Temperature

Abstract:La1-xSrxMnO3 (LSx, x = 0/0.2/0.4/0.6) perovskite-type oxides catalysts were synthesized for elemental mercury (Hg-0) oxidation in simulated coal-fired flue gas at low temperature. LS0.4 exhibited superior catalytic behavior for Hg-0 oxidation at 100-200 degrees C. The superior performance was mainly due to the surface adsorbed oxygen species in the catalysts. Effects of different components in the flue gas including HCI, O-3, SO2, H2O, NO and NH3 on Hg-0 oxidation efficiencies were studied. The results suggested that HCI significantly enhanced Hg-0 oxidation efficiency in the presence of O-2 and 10 ppmv HCI was sufficient for enhancing the oxidation process. As the catalyst had strong oxygen storage capacity, the Hg-0 oxidation activity was less dependent on O-2 concentration. As a result, the catalyst could be applied in the power plants burning low-chlorine coals. SO2, H2O and NH3 had inhibitory effect on Hg-0 oxidation, while NO enhanced it. SO2 could deactivate the catalyst and the deactivation was irreversible. In terms of mechanism, Hg-0 oxidation with LSx could be explained by the suprafacial process (Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism) whereby reactive species from adsorbed flue gas components reacted with adsorbed Hg-0. The catalyst also had potential for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 at low temperature, and the simultaneous removal of NO and Hg-0 over LS0.4 was investigated. The NO and Hg-0 conversion were higher than 50% and 85% when the space velocity was 40,000 h(-1), respectively. The results indicated that the catalyst might be used to remove NO and Hg-0 simultaneously after the cold-side electrostatic precipitators in flue gas with low concentration of ash. The catalytic mechanism of vanadium-based catalysts about Hg0-oxidation and De-PCCD/Fs is intensivly analyzed.
