Abstract:Secularism entered Arab World as a result of the influence of Western culture. The first phase of secularism was from the second half of 19th century to the first half of 20th century. Secularism appeared among the Arab Christians firstly, and then was developed by Arab Christians and Muslims together. The secularization led by Kemal in Turkey, a non-Arab country, had great influence on Arab World, and many Arab countries chose secularization as the development mode. However, the Modern Islamism has been rising since 1970s, and such a trend in Arab World was influenced greatly by Islamic Revolution in Iran, another non-Arab country. As a response to Modern Islamism, secularism, represented by one of the important modern Arab thinkers Fouad Zakariyya, entered its second phase in Arab World.

Abstract:This paper reviews research on the sociology of religion in China since the beginning of the new century. In terms of theoretical research, there are three main themes: first, research focusing on C. K. Yang's sociological study on religion, especially the theories of diffused religion and institutional religion; second, the dialogue with forefront issues such as the application of and controversies related to the rational choice theory of religion in China; and third, indigenous theoretical constructs, including “religious ecology theory” and the theory of the “Sinicization of religion”. In terms of quantitative research, this article reviews progress in the measurement of Chinese religiosity.
New Change of the Islamic Sectarian Disputes in the Middle East

Abstract:The existing differences and disputes between the Sunnis and Shiites do not inevitably lead to inter-sectarian conflicts.The Shiite identity has been strengthened since Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979.Generally speaking,the current sectarian disputes reflect the evolution of the strategic structure in the Middle East.After the Cold War,confrontation between pro-U.S.camp and anti-U.S.camp became the key feature of the strategic structure in the Middle East as a result of the U.S.intention to pursue hegemony in the region.The reality that many Sunni regimes were in the anti-U.S.camp without a leadership hold by Iran made sectarian approach meaningless to analyze the situation in the Middle East.However,the 2003 Iraq War created a rising Iran which began to play a leading role in the new anti-U.S.camp mainly consisting of Shiite countries and forces,and a strong sectarian approach including discourse and way of thinking began to be widely spread and has contributed to isolate Iran,conceal the U.S.intention to pursue hegemony,and protect the Gulf Arab countries.During the fundamental changes in the Middle East since 2011,Egypt is trying to avoid the sectarian discourse and restore relations with Iran,while countries like Saudi Arabia are fuelling the sectarian tensions to confront Iran.A new strategic structure in the Middle East is emerging based on these new trends.

Abstract:In the past 30 years,West Asian countries in the Arab world experienced three major stages of political changes:the oil boom and political instability,attempts at democratic reform,and the Muslim world's response to globalization. Since the 1990s,the democratization and liberalization of West Asian Arab countries has not made significant progress; so far,authoritarian regimes still remain dominant. At the same time,the strength of the Islamic Revival grows rapidly. Along with the extremism and radicalism,it already has and will continue to actively participate in changing and shaping the national,regional,and global political orders. The path of political development in West Asian Arab countries is an important type of the diversity of global social development.

Abstract:This paper discusses the role of government and its multiple aspects in a time of social changes, with the case study of the recovery of Dong-Yue Temple in Beijing. Secularization and De-secularization is a mode of description by sociologists for the decline and revival of religions around the world in more than 50 years. In the 20th century China, the government’s attack on traditional religions is a particular form of the secularization movement. The author points out that secularization forces are also expression of religion in a modern society. In the last 30 years a new religious market has been forming in China. Government’s control of religion has been weakening, but it still represents the values and modes of religious consumption of the ever-growing social classes. Government’s involvement indicates that secularization forces in China have not freed themselves of the forms of existence of traditional religions.

Abstract:In recent years,studies on the impact of internet on civil society in China become a heated field.We review present studies and point out their weaknesses here in a critical and reflective way.First,thanks to NGOs' contribution in 2008 Wenchuan great earthquake,many scholars overestimate the development of civil society in China;second,under western centrism and technological determinism,they simply interpret the internet as a platform for social forces to challenge the state;third,as to the issue of web public sphere,thinness of theoretical resources,inadequate inquiries of group polarization,and simplistic understanding of rationality in online discussion are major drawbacks.At last,to further the research,we propose some approaches:multiply theoretical foundations,shift research perspectives,explore new research methods and select proper methodology consciously and reflectively.

Abstract:In a historical perspective, the great significance of the discussion on social sciences in China consists in the fact that it symbolizes the termination of its shaping stage of imitation, so this inquiry may manifest itself as a turning-point for the social sciences in China. The constructive independence of social sciences requires the elimination of the dualistic antithesis between standardization/scientificization and localization/Chinalization. And it ought to be the knowledge of local-globalization originating from the two-way promotion of the particularization of universalism and the universalization of particularism. Additionally, the independence of social sciences in China must be achieved in the background of globalization, which involves sophisticated interactions of different regions across the world and complex interactions of different fields at home.

Abstract:Secularism, a concept that emerged in the West and spread throughout the world, including Indonesia, has become a subject of debate in relation to religion, especially Islam. This research aims to explore the definition of secularism, its development in various fields, the changes that arise as a result, the interpretation of Qur'anic verses related to secularism, and scholars' perspectives on this matter. Through a qualitative method, this research utilises secondary data sources, such as journal articles and books, to provide a deeper understanding of this topic. The results show that secularism is considered as the separation of human affairs from God's affairs in all aspects of life, including education. Yusuf Qardhawi expressed his concern over the influence of secularism and atheism in the Islamic world, fuelled by colonialism and modernity. In the context of Qur'anic verses, this study found references to secularism in Surah Al-Isra' and Surah Hud. In this context, the contrast between worldly and afterlife orientations, as well as warnings against mere worldly pleasures, take centre stage. As such, this study provides a deep insight into how Islam understands and interprets secularism.

Abstract:This paper comprises three parts. In the first part, it deals with the theoretical significance of the French secularization. In the second part, it illustrates the characteristics of the French secularization, and argues that the French secularization was unnatural and France ranked the most radical country in the process of the secularization. In the third part, by analyzing the contemporary orientation of Catholicism in France after secularization (including the orientations for organization, ideology and culture), it shows that even in France,the completely secularized country, Catholicism still played an significant role in the society. The theory about the secularization combining with modernization should be revised.

Through the theoretical perspective of Max Weber' s "struggle of gods", this paper tries to analyze four controversial cases in the past three years, which include disputes among cultural traditionalists, Buddhists, Christian and non - believers, to reveal the of faith in contemporary China. On that basis, its cultural background, mechanism, pattern and social consequences will be discussed.

Abstract:The complex and quite rich discourse centered on the three “Abrahamic” religions does not suggest the only way in which one can approach the issue of religious “liberty” or understand the relation among religion and the state. China offers an important and distinctive path that is in its own way more difficult to square with the Western focused discourse that has now become a global standard. Thus is it necessary, before exploring the technical legal details about the interaction of religion and the state in China. It is perhaps not too much of an exaggeration to say that “religion” signifies the character of the entire Western Civilization-- from the Council of Nicaea to the Crusades, and unto the 17th century Enlightenment and the rise of capitalism, Judeo-Christian religions have always played dominant role in the evolution (and devolution) of what is known as the “West”. China provides a substantially different “story” and that difference is foundational to China’s approach to the legitimacy of the boundaries for religious regulation. This essay offers a brief glimpse at a complex problem, and suggests the basis for the quite substantial difficulties of communicating between systems.

Abstract::Since the 1970s, the global resurgence of religion, the politicization and internationalization of religion, as well as the raging violent religious extremism, have posed a severe challenge to national sovereignty and international order. The impact of religion on national security has become an inevitable problem facing the world. For more than 60 years since the founding of the PRC, religion has always been an important issue in its national security considerations, while “anti-foreign religious infiltration” and “combating the three forces of terrorism, national separatism and religious extremism” have become the official guidelines of discussions concerning religion and national security. In the context of the global resurgence of religion, changes in China’s religious security situation and the development of non-traditional security studies, research on religion and China’s national security has begun to break through the conventional pattern of “anti-filtration study” and started to become more academic and empirical. This paper has outlined the history and current situation of studies about religion and China’s national security and discussed some basic issues of this research area.

Abstract:The developments of the Western urban were driven by a dynamic dual impetus system. Owing to lack of participation, community building pushed forward by the government faced a dilemma in China. Officials should draw lessons and experiences from the evolvements of impetus system in the Western urban community development.To enlarge participation in the urban is of vital importance and feasibility to Chinese urban community building. As a result, the civil communities will be conducted and lead to civil society, paving the way to both developments and democratization in this country.
Secularism and Corruption: A Quantitative Analysis Based on Cross-Country Dataset

Abstract:This article focuses on the relationship between political secularism and corruption problems. After a quantitative analysis using the method of OLS regression and factor analysis based on the World Values Survey Dataset,we find that countries with higher secularism have a significant correlation with lower levels of corruption. We also make a theoretical development on interpreting this data analysis outcome: a) Secularism helps curb corruption via constructing rigid bureaucratic systems in historical secularization processes; b) Secularism is the ideological foundation of citizen imagination and identification in building the modern state,especially the democratic modern state.
The Secularization and Cultural Understanding of Sacred Space: an Analysis of Historical Urban Form and Culture Characteristics in China

Abstract:Sacred space is a special type of cultural space and is an important aspect of historical urban form in both Eastern and Western cultures. These spaces often have a dual interpretation of space and social structure, which includes the evolution of town planning and the changes in social structure that convey a steadfast and non-reducible cultural significance. There are interesting differences between the East and West, and this paper aims to reveal these differences. The paper uses historical towns within the Five Sacred Mountains of China, represented by Dengfeng City, as a case study. This town is closely linked to the birth and development of Chinese civilization. The paper employs cultural memory theory, sacred space theory, and social space theory to study the transformation from the highest political space of ancient dynasties to the secular urban landscape of socialist system from two dimensions of townscape and social culture. Finally, the paper compares the characteristics of sacred space in the East and West, interprets the relationship between it and urban form and cultural value judgement, summarizes the general role of sacred space in shaping urban form and transmitting local cultural identity.

Abstract:The title of this book conveys its ambitious goal. The term “religious question” is adopted to refer to the uneasy dynamics between religion and modernity in Chinese societies. It raises broad and large questions: How do religion and modern political–social framework of Chinese societies mutually adapt ever since the 1890s? Carrying this large question, Vincent Goossaert and David Palmer look at the transformation of the religious landscape from 1898 to 2008 and propose five religious questions. The first question is “how to scale back religion's domination of culture and society in order to free the human mind and carry forward the march of modernization” (401). This question was initiated at the late Qing period when the traditional Chinese religion system was challenged by elite Confucian anticlericalism and modernizing intellectuals. Later, the endeavors of constructing a modern nation-state brought about a series of antisuperstition movements and the institutionalization of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism following the normative model of Christianity.

Abstract:The study of the interaction between the religious and political spheres, as shaped and transformed throughout ages and cultures, goes far beyond historiography. It is at its core a problem that any philosophy of history has to meet with. It leads one to reflect on how societies have given an ever-evolving meaning to their collective existence. This article is based on the works of the French philosopher Marcel Gauchet (born 1946), notably on Le desenchantement du monde (1985, English translation: The Disenchantment of the World, 1999). It also critically reinterprets his thought by formalizing the articulation between the political and religious components of the social bond (lien social) in Chinese history. By doing so, it offers alternative schemes of historical understanding, suggesting that China may actually have experienced and engineered a decoupling of the political and religious dimensions not so different in nature from the historical process that took place in the West. Such perspective helps one to see in a new light the challenges presently met by the global community as it tries to articulate its current stage of development and its ultimate purpose.
