Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (or Li-air) cells have attracted increasing interest in recent years due to their extremely high theoretical energy density. A reasonable design of the catalytic cathode is essential to realize a high performance of Li-O-2 cells. In this work, a unique core-shell MnO2@NiCo2O4 array cathode with a porous structure has been deposited directly on carbon cloth by a facile hydrothermal route. The array structure facilitates electrode wetting and oxygen gas transportation. The porous structure supplies free space for Li2O2 loading. The MnO2@NiCo2O4 array cathode exhibits a high catalytic effect enabling the conformal growth of Li2O2 with the array structure retained. This growth behavior of Li2O2 makes the decomposition of Li2O2 easy upon charging. Li-O-2 cells with the MnO2@NiCo2O4 cathode can sustain a stable cycling of 168 cycles with a limited capacity of 500 mA h g(-1) at 400 mA g(-1), which is superior to those with the NiCo2O4 cathode.
Radially Oriented Single‐Crystal Primary Nanosheets Enable Ultrahigh Rate and Cycling Properties of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Cathode Material for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Ni-rich Li[NixCoyMn1-x-y]O-2 (x >= 0.8) layered oxides are the most promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high reversible capacity of over 200 mAh g(-1). Unfortunately, the anisotropic properties associated with the alpha-NaFeO2 structured crystal grains result in poor rate capability and insufficient cycle life. To address these issues, a micrometer-sized Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 secondary cathode material consisting of radially aligned single-crystal primary particles is proposed and synthesized. Concomitant with this unique crystallographic texture, all the exposed surfaces are active {010} facets, and 3D Li+ ion diffusion channels penetrate straightforwardly from surface to center, remarkably improving the Li+ diffusion coefficient. Moreover, coordinated charge-discharge volume change upon cycling is achieved by the consistent crystal orientation, significantly alleviating the volume-change-induced intergrain stress. Accordingly, this material delivers superior reversible capacity (203.4 mAh g(-1) at 3.0-4.3 V) and rate capability (152.7 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 1000 mA g(-1)). Further, this structure demonstrates excellent cycling stability without any degradation after 300 cycles. The anisotropic morphology modulation provides a simple, efficient, and scalable way to boost the performance and applicability of Ni-rich layered oxide cathode materials.
Co3O4@delta-MnO2/Pt Core-Shell Arrays as Efficient Catalytic Cathode for Lithium-Oxygen Cells

Abstract:A unique core-shell Co3O4@delta-MnO2/Pt arrays-type cathode on Ni foam has been fabricated by a facile, controlled hydrothermal approach. The array-type structure facilitates the electrode wetting and oxygen gas transport and supplies free volume for Li2O2 loading. The Co3O4@delta-MnO2/Pt cathode exhibits high catalytic effect for ORR and OER, where thin-layered Li2O2 shows conformal growth along the surface of the Co3O4@delta-MnO2/Pt arrays with the array-type structure remained. This growth behavior of Li2O2 renders easy decomposition of Li2O2 upon charge. Li-O-2 cells with Co3O4@delta-MnO2/Pt delivers a high discharge capacity (2 480 mAh.g(-1) at 100 mA.g(-1)) and long cycle life (65 cycles at 200 mA.g(-1) with a limited capacity of 500 mAh.g(-1)), which are better than those with Co3O4 or Co3O4@delta-MnO2 cathodes.

Abstract:This paper describes a facile chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and subsequent radio-frequency (RF)-sputtering approach for the synthesis of CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell nanowire (NW) arrays on Ni foams. The metallic core (i.e., NiSi(x)) with high conductivity acts as a nanostructured current collector. The as-synthesized CoO/NiSi(x) core-shell NW arrays have been applied as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, which deliver high cycle life and enhanced power performance compared to planar CoO electrodes on Ni foams. The high surface-to-volume ratio and improved electronic/ionic conductivity of the nanostructured electrodes may be responsible for the improved performance.

Abstract:The commercial application of lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries has been seriously hindered by their large overpotential and inferior cycling performance caused by the insoluble and insulated traits of the discharge product, Li2O2. Herein, hierarchical hollow NiCo-LDH/MnO2 hybrid nanostructures derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are successfully constructed as cathodes for Li–O2 batteries to fundamentally improve the decomposition kinetics of Li2O2. The hollow NiCo-LDH/MnO2 nanostructures assembled by hollow NiCo-LDH and MnO2 nanosheets possess a highly special surface area, abundant open active sites, and a fast diffusion path for Li+ and oxygen species. As expected, accelerated sluggish oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction kinetics and reduced charge/discharge overpotentials can be obtained. The toroidal Li2O2 assembled by nanoflakes formed on the surface of the cathode can be conducive to form a low-impedance Li2O2/cathode contact interface to achieve the reversible formation and decomposition of Li2O2. The Li–O2 battery based on the NiCo-LDH/MnO2 cathode shows a high charge/discharge specific capacity of 13,380 mA h g–1 at 100 mA g–1 and a continuous cycling stability for 162 cycles at a fixed capacity of 500 mAh g–1 as well as a low overpotential of 0.63 V. Abstract:Tailored synthesis of advanced core/shell composite electrodes is the key for construction of high-performance power sources. In this work, we report a facile combined strategy for fabrication of 3D porous NiO/nitrogen-doped carbon (NiO/N-C) core/shell nanosheets arrays by chemical bath deposition plus electro-deposition methods. Thin N-C shell is uniformly coated on the preformed NiO nanosheets forming composite arrays. As a binder-free anode material for lithium ion batteries, the resultant NiO/N-C core/shell naoosheets arrays electrode exhibits enhanced electrochemical performances with better cycle capability and improved rate performance. The N-doped composite core/shell architecture plays positive roles in the enhancement of electrochemical performance due to lower charge-transfer resistance, and better strain accommodation during the discharge/charge cycling. Our research may offer an attractive way for the construction of high-performance metal oxides electrodes for energy storage.
Nio@Mno2 Core-Shell Composite Microtube Arrays for High-Performance Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Tubular array structures are very attractive for electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems due to their unique physicochemical properties. Herein, a NiO microtube array is fabricated via a facile oxalic acid corrosion method followed by heat treatment. A NiO@MnO2 core-shell composite microtube array is further achieved by the anodic electrodeposition using the NiO microtube array as substrate. When applied as self-supported electrode for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the NiO@MnO2 core-shell composite microtube array electrode shows excellent lithium storage properties. The electrode delivers a reversible capacity of 510 mA h g(-1) at a high rate of 5.1 A g(-1), showing its good rate capability. In particular, a reversible capacity of 1573 mA h g(-1) is observed after 500 cycles at a current density of 0.53 A g(-1), demonstrating the superior cycling performance of the electrode. The electrodeposited MnO2 layer as a protective shell prevents the NiO microtubes from deformation during electrochemical cycling, responsible for the superior cycle stability of the NiO@MnO2 core-shell composite microtube array electrode. The prominent lithium storage performance of the composite microtube array electrode can be attributed to its unique structure characteristics.

Abstract:Manganese monoxide (MnO) is a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries, but it often shows poor electrochemical performance due to some inevitable drawbacks including intrinsic low electrical conductivity, poor stability, and severe polarization. In this work, a 1D core-shell MnO@S, N co-doped carbon material (MnO@SNC) was obtained by pyrolysis of MnO2@PPy precursor at 600 degrees C in N-2 atmosphere. When evaluated as an anode for lithium ion batteries, the unique structure and composition advantages endow the as-formed material with excellent lithium storage performance in terms of high specific capacity (955.5 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 500 mA g(-1)), long-term cycling stability (up to 500 cycles), and superior rate capability (458.7 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 2 A g(-1)). The outstanding electrochemical performance could be attributed to the unique 1D core-shell structure, abundant graphited carbon and MnO nanorods.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen batteries with extra-high energy density attracted increasing attention. However, their development is limited by sluggish oxygen redox kinetics, resulting in large overpotential and low cyclic life. Herein, N-NiCoO2/CoO array on conductive carbon cloth (noted as NNCO/CC) is designed by a hydrothermal and nitriding method as an ORR/OER bifunctional catalyst for LOBs cathode to alleviate the problem. The introduction of N promotes electron redistribution on bimetal sites, which can enhance the affinity of intermediate (O*, LiO2*, Li2O2*) and induce deposition/decomposition of flake-like amorphous Li2O2. Based on NNCO/CC cathode, Li-O2 cells exhibit a low overpotential of 0.35 V and improved cycling capability over 500 cycles at 0.05 mA cm-2. The cycle stability could be maintained over 225 cycles with a limited capacity of 0.2 mAh cm-2. DFT calculations further disclose that NNCO/CC shows a synergistic role in the ORR and OER reactions. N-NiCoO2 has a more vital adsorption ability towards key intermediates (LiO2*) in the ORR process, and N-CoO has a slight reaction energy barrier in the OER process. The method of regulating the electronic structure of bimetallic oxides to promote synergy in the redox reactions opens up new paths for the functional cathode design of Li-O2 cells.

Abstract:Li–O2 batteries recently have attracted intensive research interest because of the rather high energy density. The electrochemical performance of Li–O2 batteries, however, is largely limited by the insulating and reactive Li2O2, which necessitates a renovation on the design of catalytic cathodes. In this work, we propose a unique MnO2/carbon submicron tube (MnO2/CST) array-type catalytic cathode capable of controlling Li2O2 growth spatially and structurally. The high catalytic activity of ultrathin MnO2 nanosheets enables conformal growth of thin-layered Li2O2 on the MnO2 sheets, which relieves or defers electrode deactivation upon discharge and renders easy catalytic decomposition of Li2O2 upon charge. In situ transmission electron microscopy characterization confirms the presence of Li2O2 on discharged MnO2/CST and reveals the phase transition and morphology changes upon charge. The array-type architecture of the catalytic cathode facilitates barrier-free transportation of oxygen gas and Li ions. The absence of polymer binder and the reduced carbon exposure to Li2O2 (or LiO2) exclude or minimize the parasitic reactions related to binder and carbon. As a result, Li–O2 cells with MnO2/CST catalytic cathode exhibit superior cycling stability and low polarization. At 800mAg–1, the cell can sustain a stable cycling of over 300 cycles at a limited capacity of 1000 mAh g–1.
In-situ encapsulation of core-shell structured Co@Co3O4@CNOs as anode for lithium-ion batteries with high rate performance

Abstract:Core-shell structured material consisting of Co@Co3O4 core encapsulated in carbon nano-onions (CNOs) shell using 1-hexyl-3-methyl imidazolium dilyanamide ([HMIm]N(CN)2) as carbon source were synthesized by high-temperature carbonization and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) oxidation. In the process of high-temperature carbonization, cobalt ions were in-situ reduced to metallic cobalt, producing core-shell structured Co@CNOs. Subsequently, Co@Co3O4@CNOs was obtained using H2O2 oxidation, in which parts of the metallic cobalt were in-situ oxidized to Co3O4, and simultaneously the carbon material was not lost. The structural characterizations indicating that the Co@Co3O4@CNOs was composed of three crystalline phases, with a higher degree of graphitization and a larger specific surface area. When applied to lithium-ion batteries anode, Co@Co3O4@CNOs showed superior reversible capacity (865 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 0.5C) and rate performance (403 mAh g−1 after 1500 cycles at 10C). Its superior electrochemical performance was attributed to CNOs, nitrogen doping, rich mesopores, and the synergistic effect between Co3O4 and conductive metallic cobalt, uniformly dispersed Co@Co3O4 not only have excellent structural stability but also have improved electrical conductivity and ion transfer.

Abstract:Ni-rich layered oxides LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (denoted as NCM, x + y + z = 1, x ≥ 0.8) are prevailing cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high practical capacity and moderate cost. However, the inferior structural stability and rapid capacity fading stemming from the intergranular cracks induced by anisotropic volume changes in the deeply delithiated state significantly hamper the large-scale application of Ni-rich cathodes. In order to overcome these intractable issues, binary-compositional core-shell structure Ni-rich cathodes composed of LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM622) shell and LiNi 0.9 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 O 2 (NCM9055) core are proposed. In this unique core-shell structure, the low Ni fractional NCM622 shell with radially oriented primary particles could reduce the surface side reaction with electrolyte and alleviate internal stress, thereby effectively inhibiting the intergranular crack formation. Specifically, 40 wt% NCM622 coating NCM9055 cathode exhibits a high reversible discharge capacity of 160.5 mA/h/g with a remarkable capacity retention of 85.0% after 200 cycles at 0.5 °C, which is far superior to the pristine NCM9055 cathode with a low reversible capacity of 123.2 mA/h/g and inferior capacity retention of 62.9%. This work provides a new insight into the rational design of Ni-rich cathodes with high structural stability and long cycling lifespan.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are consequently considered to be an attractive energy storage technology because of the high theoretical energy densities. Here, an effective binder-free cathode with high capacity for Li-O2 batteries, needle-like mesoporous NiCo2O4 nanowire arrays uniformly coated on the flexible carbon textile have been in situ fabricated via a facile hydrothermal process followed by low temperature calcination. Because of the material and structural features, the needle-like NiCo2O4 nanowire arrays (NCONWAs) served as a binder-free cathode exhibits high specific capacity (4221 mAh g(-1)), excellent rate capability, and outstanding cycling stability (200 cycles). This cathode based on nonprecious mesoporous metal oxides nanowire arrays has large open spaces and high surface area, providing numerous catalytically active sites and effective transmission pathways for lithium ion and oxygen, and promises the abundant Li2O2 storage. The fast electron transport by directly anchoring on the substrate ensures fast electrochemical reaction process involved with the every nanowire. Furthermore, a bendable Li-O2 battery assembled by using the flexible NCONWAs as the cathode, can be able to light an LED and shows good rate capability and cyclic stability.

Abstract:Manganese oxides are promising high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) yet suffer from short cycle life and poor rate capability. Herein, we demonstrate a facile in situ interfacial synthesis of core-shell heterostructures comprising nitrogen-enriched porous carbon (pN-C) nanocoating and manganese oxide (MnOx) nanotubes. When MnOx/pN-C serves as an anode material for LIBs, the pN-C coating plays multiple roles in substantially improving the lithium storage performance. In combination with the nanosized structure and nanotubular architecture, the MnOx/pN-C nanocomposites exhibit an impressive reversible capacity of 1068 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1), a high-rate delivery of 361 mAh g(-1) at 8 A g(-1), and a stable cycling retention up to 300 cycles. The surface pN-C coating strategy can be extended to design and fabricate various metal oxide nanostructures for high-performance LIBs.

Abstract:A highly efficient oxygen electrode is indispensable for achieving high-performance aprotic lithium-O-2 batteries. Herein, it is demonstrated that strongly coupled carbon nanosheets/molybdenum carbide (alpha-MoC1-x) nanocluster hierarchical hybrid hollow spheres (denoted as MoC1-x/HSC) can work well as cathode for boosting the performance of lithium-O-2 batteries. The important feature of MoC1-x/HSC is that the alpha-MoC1-x nanoclusters, uniformly incorporated into carbon nanosheets, can not only effectively prevent the nanoclusters from agglomeration, but also help enhance the interaction between the nanoclusters and the conductive substrate during the charge and discharge process. As a consequence, the MoC1-x/HSC shows significantly improved electrocatalytic performance in an aprotic Li-O-2 battery with greatly reduced charge and discharge overpotentials and long cycle stability. The ex situ scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies reveal that the mechanism for the high-performance Li-O-2 battery using MoC1-x/HSC as cathode is that the incorporated molybdenum carbide nanoclusters can make oxygen reduction on their surfaces easy, and finally form amorphous film-like Li-deficient Li2O2 with the ability to decompose at a low potential. To the best of knowledge, the MoC1-x/HSC of this paper is among the best cathode materials for lithium-O-2 batteries reported to date.

Abstract:The design of Ni-rich core and Mn-rich shell is of great significance for improving the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion battery cathode materials at high voltage. The core-shell structure LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (CS-NCM811) cathode materials is prepared through co-precipitation method. XRD shows that the cathode materials have α-NaFeO2 layered structure and SEM images show that the material has a good morphology. The elemental compositions in Ni, Co, and Mn of both the core and shell of the CS-NCM811 particles are analyzed by EDS. The electrochemical performance results show that the CS-NCM811 provides better cycling stability than the homogeneous. The capacity retention rate of CS-NCM811 at 3 C is significantly higher than that of homogeneous materials at 4.6 V. The change in morphology after 100 cycles proves that the core-shell structure can inhibit the side reaction and reduce polarization. In addition, the CS-NCM811 has better thermal stability with high exothermic temperature and low heat.

Abstract:Recently, transition metal oxides have attracted great attention as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacities. However, their poor electrical conductivity, unstable cycling performance and unclear additional capacity are still great challenges. Herein, CoxMnyNizO (x:y:z = 8 : 0.92 : 0.71) nanosheets corresponding to the cubic CoO phase directly formed on a Cu foil (CMN-CH) were fabricated and directly tested as binder-free anode electrodes for lithium-ion batteries. The unique preparation of the electrode without a binder effectively accelerated the transfer of Li(+)ions and electrons. Additionally, much more active sites were exposed to the electrolyte in the absence of additives (binder and conductive carbon). Metal vacancies and oxygen vacancies could be clearly observed in the crystal lattices, which were induced by doping Mn and Ni atoms in the CoO crystal lattices. The prepared CMN-CH electrode demonstrated superior capacities of 1501 mA h g(-1) at 5 A g(-1) after 1500 cycles and 823 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1) after 1500 cycles, which are far beyond the theoretical capacity of CoO (716 mA h g(-1)) and surpass that of most CoO-based composites with carbon materials reported in the literature. The reversible conversion between Co(2+)and Co3+ during the cycling process contributed greatly to the reversible capacity. Based on the obtained excellent electrochemical capacities, the prepared CMN-CH has great potential to be used as an anode electrode for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Single-crystalline nickel-rich cobalt-poor layered oxides are promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high safety and competitive cost. However, the severe cation disorder and lithium/oxygen (Li/O) loss during the high-temperature calcination process result in slow Li-ion diffusion and inferior O stability. Herein, a LiNi0.85Co0.05Mn0.10O2 (NCM85) single-crystalline cathode was prepared at relatively lower lithiation temperatures by barium/aluminum (Ba/Al) co-doping. The increase in the c-axis caused by Ba doping with a larger ion radius and the reduction in Li/Ni disorder can enhance the Li-ion diffusion kinetics, while the strong Ba-O and Al-O bonds considerably boost the lattice O stability to alleviate O escape during the charging process. The optimized cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 206.5 mA h g-1 at 0.1C and 115.6 mA h g-1 at 5C. Impressively, 87.5% of initial capacity is still maintained after 500 cycles at 1C in a pouch-type full cell. This finding provides a viable and flexible method to resolve the kinetics and stability issues of other layered oxide cathodes. Ba/Al co-doping effectively lower the calcination temperature, greatly reduces Li/Ni mixing and expands the c-axis parameter, and stabilizes the lattice oxygen, resulting in enhanced Li-diffusion kinetics and excellent cycle life.
