Abstract:Co3O4@CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) core/shell nanosheet array on Ni foam was prepared as an integrated battery-type electrode for supercapacitors by growth of CoNi-LDH nanosheets shell on the surface of Co3O4 plates core. The resulting composite material exhibits high specific capacitance (2676.9 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. The improved electrochemical behavior is benefited from the typical mesoporous structure, which shorten the diffusion distance of OH-in the electrolyte and the strong core/shell binding interaction among Co3O4 and CoNi-LDH nanosheet arrays. Additionally, an assembled asymmetric supercapacitor (ASCs) device using as-fabricated Co3O4@CoNi-LDH as positive electrode and activated carbon (AC) as negative electrode also exhibits a high energy density of 61.23 Wh kg(-1) at a high power density of 750 W kg(-1), furthermore, still remains 24.8 Wh kg(-1) even at a higher power density of 7500 W kg(-1). Most importantly, a red light-emitting diode (LED) can be illuminated by two connected ASCs, indicating that assynthesized Co3O4@ CoNi-LDH possesses great potential for practical applications. As a result, this work demonstrates a feasible strategy for the design and fabrication of metal oxides/LDH composites for applications in energy storage systems.

Abstract:Mesoporous NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays on graphene film grown directly on a three-dimensional Ni foam have been fabricated by a facile hydrothermal method, accompanied by annealing under air atmosphere. The BET specific surface area of NiCo2O4@graphene film@Ni foam is as high as 47.65 m(2) g(-1). The porous composites served as a binder-free anode material for lithium-ion batteries display an excellent and stable electrochemical performance with high specific capacities of 1232 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 500 mA g(-1) over 100 cycles and 1493 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 1500 mA g(-1) after 230 cycles with Coulombic efficiency higher than 97%. Moreover, a fairly high rate capacity of 586 mAh g(-1) retained even at a high current density of 8000 mA g(-1). The outstanding electrochemical performance should be attributed to synergetic effect of NiCo2O4 nanoneedle arrays with mesoporous nature and high specific area as well as graphene substrate supporting, which can accommodate the volume variation during the electrochemical reactions and facilitate the ion and electron transmission.

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Hierarchical ultrathin NiCo2O4 nanosheeets grown on uniform hollow carbon microspheres (HC@NiCo2O4) are designed and fabricated by a solvothermal reaction followed with an annealing process. When evaluated as an anode for lithium ion batteries, the as-prepared HC@NiCo2O4 microspheres exhibit excellent electrochemical performance (a high reversible capacity of 1015 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1) and a high capacity of 805 mA h g(-1) even at a high current density of 0.5 A g(-1)). By pairing with the LiCoO2 cathode, the HC@NiCo2O4 anode also manifests excellent performance in full cells. The outstanding electrochemical performance in half and full cells can be attributed to its unique structure, which can not only promote the contact of electrode and electrolyte during the charge and discharge processes, but also shorten the transmission path of electrons and ions. Abstract:To fabricate free-standing electrodes with hierarchical structured redox-type metal oxides has become a wise strategy for the development of high-performance energy storage systems. Two types of NiCo2O4 with needle-like and slice-like morphologies act as the conducting cores and hydrothermally grow on carbon cloth (CC/NiCo2O4-N and CC/NiCo2O4-S). The mesoporous NiO ultrathin nanosheets further are anchored on the surface of the two types of CC/NiCo2O4 to form the novel high-performance electrodes (CC/NiCo2O4-N@0NiO and CC/NiCo2O4-S@NiO). Particularly, the formation mechanism of NiO ultrathin nanosheets is proposed. The two integrated electrodes of CC/NiCo2O4-N@NiO and CC/NiCo2O4-S@NiO exhibit high specific capacitance of 921.9 and 852.9 mF/cm(2) (or 709.1 and 775.1 F/g) at 2 mA/cm(2), respectively and excellent long cycling lifespan (both 100% retention after 10,000 cycles). The assembled asymmetric supercapacitors, CC/NiCo2O4-N@NiO//graphene and CC/NiCo2O4-S@NiO//graphene, can still deliver the high energy density and power density, and possess excellent cycling stability (95.2% and 92.3% retention after 10,000 cycles, respectively). Our work not only provides an attractive strategy and a two-step facile method for construction of hierarchical electrodes based on ultrathin NiO sheets and nanostructured NiCo2O4, but also offers a strategy for high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) has been considered as one of the most promising anodes for advanced rechargeable batteries due to its advantages such as high energy density, earth abundance and environmental friendly. However, its large volume change during the Li-Sn/Na-Sn alloying and de-alloying processes will result in a fast capacity degradation over a long term cycling. To solve this issue, in this work we design and synthesize a novel honeycomb-like composite composing of carbon encapsulated SnO2 nanospheres embedded in carbon film by using dual templates of SiO2 and NaCl. Using these composites as anodes both in lithium ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries, no discernable capacity degradation is observed over hundreds of long term cycles at both low current density (100 mA g(-1)) and high current density (500 mA g(-1)). Such a good cyclic stability and high delivered capacity have been attributed to the high conductivity of the supported carbon film and hollow encapsulated carbon shells, which not only provide enough space to accommodate the volume expansion but also prevent further aggregation of SnO2 nanoparticles upon cycling. By engineering electrodes of accommodating high volume expansion, we demonstrate a prototype to achieve high performance batteries, especially high-power batteries. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A carbon-free, three-dimensional network structured material composed of NiCo2O4 nanowires and Ni foam was synthesized by a facile method. When applied as the air electrode for the lithium–oxygen battery, the unique network structure enables the surface of nanowires highly accessible to the reactants and facilities the electron transport during the charge/discharge processes. A superior electrochemical performance including low charge overpotential and excellent cyclability are obtained. This work suggests the great potential of the carbon-free NiCo2O4@Ni as the air electrodes for lithium–oxygen batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are consequently considered to be an attractive energy storage technology because of the high theoretical energy densities. Here, an effective binder-free cathode with high capacity for Li-O2 batteries, needle-like mesoporous NiCo2O4 nanowire arrays uniformly coated on the flexible carbon textile have been in situ fabricated via a facile hydrothermal process followed by low temperature calcination. Because of the material and structural features, the needle-like NiCo2O4 nanowire arrays (NCONWAs) served as a binder-free cathode exhibits high specific capacity (4221 mAh g(-1)), excellent rate capability, and outstanding cycling stability (200 cycles). This cathode based on nonprecious mesoporous metal oxides nanowire arrays has large open spaces and high surface area, providing numerous catalytically active sites and effective transmission pathways for lithium ion and oxygen, and promises the abundant Li2O2 storage. The fast electron transport by directly anchoring on the substrate ensures fast electrochemical reaction process involved with the every nanowire. Furthermore, a bendable Li-O2 battery assembled by using the flexible NCONWAs as the cathode, can be able to light an LED and shows good rate capability and cyclic stability.

Abstract:The commercial application of lithium–oxygen (Li–O2) batteries has been seriously hindered by their large overpotential and inferior cycling performance caused by the insoluble and insulated traits of the discharge product, Li2O2. Herein, hierarchical hollow NiCo-LDH/MnO2 hybrid nanostructures derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are successfully constructed as cathodes for Li–O2 batteries to fundamentally improve the decomposition kinetics of Li2O2. The hollow NiCo-LDH/MnO2 nanostructures assembled by hollow NiCo-LDH and MnO2 nanosheets possess a highly special surface area, abundant open active sites, and a fast diffusion path for Li+ and oxygen species. As expected, accelerated sluggish oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction kinetics and reduced charge/discharge overpotentials can be obtained. The toroidal Li2O2 assembled by nanoflakes formed on the surface of the cathode can be conducive to form a low-impedance Li2O2/cathode contact interface to achieve the reversible formation and decomposition of Li2O2. The Li–O2 battery based on the NiCo-LDH/MnO2 cathode shows a high charge/discharge specific capacity of 13,380 mA h g–1 at 100 mA g–1 and a continuous cycling stability for 162 cycles at a fixed capacity of 500 mAh g–1 as well as a low overpotential of 0.63 V. Synthesis of a Nanowire Self-Assembled Hierarchical ZnCo2O4shell/Ni Current Collector Core As Binder-Free Anodes for High-Performance Li-ion Batteries

Abstract:In this paper, ZnCo2O4 nanowires have been grown and self-assembled as hierarchical structures on a 3D conductive Ni foam substrate. Both leaf-like ZnCo2O4 and dandelion-like ZnCo2O4 assemblies were synthesized through a hydrothermal process followed by a post-annealing treatment. It is shown that leaf-like assemblies are directly grown on the substrate while dandelion-like assemblies are adsorbed on the surface of the structures. A possible formation mechanism of ZnCo2O4 hierarchical structures was proposed. It is shown that these nanowires are porous structures which provide much increased specific surface area. Further work was conducted by taking these Ni foam supported ZnCo2O4 structures as binder-free electrodes for Li-ion batteries. Remarkably, the leaf-like ZnCo2O4/Ni foam electrode exhibits greatly improved electrochemical performance with high capacity and excellent cycling stability. A high reversible capacity of 1050 mA h g(-1) at the rate of 100 mA g(-1) was obtained after 60 cycles. Meanwhile, the electrode showed a high rate of 416 mA g(-1) with a high capacity of 850 mA h g(-1) even after 50 cycles. Our work demonstrates that this unique nanowire self-assembled ZnCo2O4 hierarchical structure is promising for high-performance electrochemical energy applications.
Engineering Hierarchical Co@N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes/α-Ni(OH)2 Heterostructures on Carbon Cloth Enabling High-Performance Aqueous Nickel-Zinc Batteries

Abstract:Searching for high-performance Ni-based cathodes plays an important role in developing better aqueous nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries. For this purpose, herein, we demonstrate the design and synthesis of ultrathin α-Ni(OH)2 nanosheets branched onto metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived 3D cross-linked N-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulated with tiny Co nanoparticles (denoted as Co@NCNTs/α-Ni(OH)2), which are directly supported on a flexible carbon cloth (CC). An aqueous Ni-Zn battery employing the hierarchical CC/Co@NCNTs/α-Ni(OH)2 as the binder-free cathode and a commercial Zn plate as the anode is fabricated, which displays an ultrahigh capacity (316 mAh g-1) and energy density (540.4 Wh kg-1) at 1 A g-1 as well as excellent rate capability (238 mAh g-1 at 10 A g-1) and superior cycling performance (about 84% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 10 A g-1). The impressive electrochemical performance might benefit from the rich active sites, rapid electron transfer, cushy electrolyte access, rapid ion transport, and robust structural stability. In addition, the quasi-solid-state CC/Co@NCNTs/α-Ni(OH)2//Zn batteries are also successfully assembled with polymer electrolyte, indicating the great potential for portable and wearable electronics. This work might provide important guidance for constructing carbon-based hybrid materials directly supported on conductive substrates as high-performance electrodes for energy-related devices.
A Three-Dimensional Hierarchical Fe2o3@Nio Core/Shell Nanorod Array on Carbon Cloth: A New Class of Anode for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A Fe2O3@NiO core/shell nanorodarray on carbon cloth was prepared with the aid of hydrothermal synthesis combined with subsequent chemical bath deposition. The resultant array structure is composed of Fe2O3 nanorods as the core and interconnected ultrathin NiO nanoflakes as the shell. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the heterostructured array electrode delivers a high discharge capacity of 1047.2 mA h g(-1) after 50 cycles at 200 mA g(-1), and 783.3 mA h g(-1) at a high current density of 2000 mA g(-1). The excellent electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique 3D core/shell nanorod array architecture and a rational combination of two electrochemical active materials. Our growth approach offers a simple and effective technique for the design and synthesis of a transition metal oxide hierarchical array that is promising for high-performance electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:We propose a new design of a binder/carbon-free air electrode with tips-bundled Pt/Co3O4 nanowires grown directly on Ni foam substrate. In this design, the side reactions related to binder/carbon are excluded. The presence of Pt not only promotes the formation of the tips-bundled structure of Co3O4 nanowires but also directs the uniform deposition of a fluffy, thin Li2O2 layer only on the periphery of Pt/Co3O4 nanowires. This crystallization habit of Li2O2 makes it easy to decompose upon recharge with reduced side reactions. As a result, Li-O-2 batteries with this cathode show low polarization.

Abstract:A hierarchically Fe2O3@Co3O4 nanowire array is prepared by the aid of hydrothermal synthesis and sacrificial hydrolysis method. The obtained nanowire array shows hierarchical porosity and large surface area. The resulted Fe2O3@Co3O4 nanowire array is evaluated as an anode material for Li ion batteries, which exhibits high capacity and good cycle stability (1005.1 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles at a current density of 200 mA g(-1)) and an excellent rate performance, mainly owing to the unique hierarchical nanowire architecture and an elegant synergistic effect of two electrochemically active materials. Abstract:Hierarchical tubular structures constructed by ultrathin carbon-coated SnO(2) nanoplates are rationally designed and synthesized. This interesting structure simultaneously integrates the structural and compositional design rationales for high-energy anode materials based on low-dimensional ultrathin nanoplates, a hollow tubular structure, and a carbon nanocoating. High areal specific capacity of Ni3V2O8/carbon cloth hierarchical structures as flexible anodes for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:Due to the low density of nanostructured materials, it is still a big challenge to realize high volumetric performance instead of high specific gravimetric capacity with many state-of-the-art electrodes for compact electrochemical energy storage. Moreover, developing high-performance flexible and binder-free electrode materials is also crucial for their future applications in diverse fields, such as portable electronics and wearable devices. In this work, we designed and synthesized a Ni3V2O8/carbon cloth (CC) hierarchical structure as a flexible anode for sodium-ion batteries. Morphology-controllable growth of different Ni3V2O8/CC hierarchical structures is achieved by optimizing the synthesis parameters (e.g. the growth temperatures). The high mass loading (4 mg cm(-2)), ultra-high areal specific capacity (2.6 mA h cm(-2) at a current density of 500 mA g(-1)), no addition of binders or other additives and good flexibility facilitate their application in sodium-ion batteries.
Three-dimension Hierarchical Flower-Like Ni1.5Co1.5O4 Nanostructures Composed of Two-Dimension Ultrathin Nanosheets As an Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Uniform three-dimension hierarchical flower-like Ni1.5Co1.5O4 nanostructures were synthesized on a large scale by a simple, low-temperature hydrothermal method without any template, catalyst and surfactant, followed by a calcinating process. The obtained Ni1.5Co1.5O4 products were composed of two-dimension ultrathin nanosheets with random attachment. Nitrogen sorption isotherm shows that this structure possesses a high specific surface area of 118.8m2g−1 with an average pore diameter of 16.67nm. When tested as an anode material, the as-prepared Ni1.5Co1.5O4 nanostructures exhibit an initial discharge capacity of 1461.5mAhg−1. After 30 cycles at the current density of 100mAg−1, the discharge capacity still keeps 980.8mAhg−1. The obtained three-dimension hierarchical flower-like Ni1.5Co1.5O4 nanostructures show a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:A carbon-free, three-dimensional network structured material composed of (Co, Mn)3O4 nanowires and Ni foam was synthesized. Without the addition of any binder or conductive additives, it could be employed as the air electrode for lithium-oxygen batteries and delivers a specific capacity of 3605 mA h g(electrode)(-1) at a current density of 0.05 mA cm(-2). Fifty cycles of continuous discharge and charge have been obtained with a cut-off capacity of 500 mA h g(electrode)(-1). The high reversibility and large capacity of the batteries is largely attributed to the unique features of the as-prepared (Co, Mn)3O4@Ni electrode, which enables the surface of nanowires to become highly accessible to the reactants and provides more void volume for the deposition of discharge products. This work suggests that there is great potential in employing the carbon-free (Co, Mn)3O4@Ni as air electrodes for lithium-oxygen batteries.
