Abstract:Recently, with the increasing integration of wind power into power systems through power electronic converters, new types of subsynchronous resonance/oscillation (SSR/SSO) occurred frequently. The most noteworthy feature of them is the participation of the control system of wind generators. It has been demonstrated that the converter control had a decisive impact on the forming of SSR during the accidents that happened at wind farms in Guyuan and Hami system, China. Some SSR/SSO events even appeared in the system that has no series compensation on the transmission lines. Obviously, the mechanism and characteristics of these new phenomena are different from the terms of SSR and SSO previously proposed by IEEE. Theoretical research in this area is still on its initial stage. To enrich the theoretical framework of SSR/SSO study and facilitate the communication in this area, it is necessary to amend the existing classification of SSR/SSO phenomena. In this paper, the evolution and classification of SSR/SSO are reviewed at first. Then, we analysed several real SSR/SSO incidents caused by the interactions between wind generators and AC grid. Their characteristics are investigated with electromagnetic models. Next, we proposed a new way of classification based on the dominant source of oscillatory mode and the way generators interact with the grid. Finally, we discussed the co-existence and interaction of different types of SSR/SSO.
