Abstract:Since the 1950s, “Babylonian mathematics” has often served to open expositions of the general history of mathematics. Since it is written in a language and a script which only specialists understand, it has always been dealt with differently by the “insiders”, the Assyriologists who approached the texts where it manifests itself as philologists and historians of Mesopotamian culture, and by “outsiders”, historians of mathematics who had to rely on second-hand understanding of the material (actually, of as much of this material as they wanted to take into account), but who saw it as a constituent of the history of mathematics. The article deals with how these different approaches have looked in various periods: pre-decipherment speculations; the early period of deciphering, 1847–1929; the “golden decade”, 1929–1938, where workers with double competence (primarily Neugebauer and Thureau-Dangin ) attacked the corpus and demonstrated the Babylonians to have possessed unexpectedly sophisticated mathematical knowledge; and the ensuing four decades, where some mopping-up without change of perspective was all that was done by a handful of Assyriologists and Assyriologically competent historians of mathematics, while most Assyriologists lost interest completely, and historians of mathematics believed to possess the definitive truth about the topic in Neugebauer ’s popularizations.

Abstract:The "new math" curriculum, one version of which was developed in the 1950s and 1960s by the School Mathematics Study Group under the auspices of the National Science Foundation, occasioned a great deal of controversy among mathematicians. Well before its rejection by parents and teachers, some mathematicians were vocal critics, decrying the new curriculum because of the way it described the practice and history of the discipline. The nature of mathematics, despite the field's triumphs in helping to win World War II and its midcentury promotion as the key to a modern technological society, was surprisingly contested in this period. Supporters of the School Mathematics Study Group, like its director, Edward Begle, emphasized the importance of portraying mathematics as a system of abstract structures, while opponents like Morris Kline argued that math was essentially a tool for understanding the natural world. The debate about the curriculum--and the role of mathematicians in its design--was also a debate about the underlying identity of the subject itself.

Abstract:The paper starts by looking at how ‘practical’ and ‘theoretical’ mathematics and their relation have been understood from the Greeks to Christian Wolff and by historians of mathematics from Montucla to recent days. Drawing on earlier work of mine, and on the giants on whose shoulders I (try to) stand, I then suggest a categorization of the mathematical knowledge types a historian has to deal with: the ‘sub-scientific’ type, carried by practitioners taught in an apprenticeship network; the ‘scholasticized’ type, taught supposedly for practice but in a ‘scribal’ school by masters whose own genuine practice is that of teaching; and the ‘scientific’ or theory-oriented type. In the end, the utility of this categorization is tried out on two specific cases.

Abstract:Did science, as we know it, have to be? The article explores a possible response in the negative, organized around a specific contingency: that of Greek mathematics or, even more specifically, that of the mathematics of the generation of Archimedes. The argument is that (1) Greek mathematics, seen against a cross-cultural comparison, is an anomaly, (2) the scientific revolution, as it in fact unfolded, was directly shaped by the anomaly of Greek mathematics, and (3) it is not clear that, absent Greek mathematics, an equivalent scientific revolution would have taken place. The argument is developed in some detail concerning the history of ancient Greek science, but more is said on the inevitably philosophical questions of counterfactuals in history and on the specific question of the contingency of science.

Abstract:Historian Herbert Mehrtens sought to portray the history of turn-of-the-century mathematics as a struggle of modern vs countermodern, led respectively by David Hilbert and Felix Klein. Some of Mehrtens' conclusions have been picked up by both historians (Jeremy Gray) and mathematicians (Frank Quinn). We argue that Klein and Hilbert, both at Goettingen, were not adversaries but rather modernist allies in a bid to broaden the scope of mathematics beyond a narrow focus on arithmetized analysis as practiced by the Berlin school. Klein's Goettingen lecture and other texts shed light on Klein's modernism. Hilbert's views on intuition are closer to Klein's views than Mehrtens is willing to allow. Klein and Hilbert were equally interested in the axiomatisation of physics. Among Klein's credits is helping launch the career of Abraham Fraenkel, and advancing the careers of Sophus Lie, Emmy Noether, and Ernst Zermelo, all four surely of impeccable modernist credentials. Mehrtens' unsourced claim that Hilbert was interested in production rather than meaning appears to stem from Mehrtens' marxist leanings. Mehrtens' claim that [the future SS-Brigadefuehrer] "Theodor Vahlen ... cited Klein's racist distinctions within mathematics, and sharpened them into open antisemitism" fabricates a spurious continuity between the two figures mentioned and is thus an odious misrepresentation of Klein's position. Abstract:Plato, so the story goes, held mathematics in high esteem, and those philosopher-kings that ought to rule his republic should have a thorough foundation in mathematics. This may well be true – but an observation made by Aristotle suggests that the mathematics which Plato intends is not the one based on theorems and proofs which we normally identify with “Greek mathematics”. Most other ancient writers who speak of mathematics as a road toward Wisdom also appear to be blissfully ignorant of the mathematics of Euclid, Archimedes, Apollonios, etc. – though not necessarily of their names. The aim of the paper is to identify the kinds of mathematics which were available as external sources for this current (on the whole leaving out of consideration Liberal-Arts mathematics as not properly external). A number of borrowings can be traced to various practitioners' traditions – but always as bits borrowed out of context.

Abstract:We compare several approaches to the history of mathematics recently proposed by Blasjo, Fraser--Schroter, Fried, and others. We argue that tools from both mathematics and history are essential for a meaningful history of the discipline. In an extension of the Unguru-Weil controversy over the concept of geometric algebra, Michael Fried presents a case against both Andre Weil the "privileged observer" and Pierre de Fermat the "mathematical conqueror." We analyze Fried's version of Unguru's alleged polarity between a historian's and a mathematician's history. We identify some axioms of Friedian historiographic ideology, and propose a thought experiment to gauge its pertinence. Unguru and his disciples Corry, Fried, and Rowe have described Freudenthal, van der Waerden, and Weil as Platonists but provided no evidence; we provide evidence to the contrary. We analyze how the various historiographic approaches play themselves out in the study of the pioneers of mathematical analysis including Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, and Cauchy.

Abstract:Spengler’s work is typically represented as speculative philosophy of history. There is good reason, however, to consider much of his thought as preoccupied with existential and phenomenological questions about the nature and ends of human existence, rather than with history per se. In this paper, Spengler’s work is considered in comparison with Heidegger’s history of Being and analysis of technological modernity. It is argued that Spengler’s considerable proximity to much of Heidegger’s thought compels us to reconsider the nature and scope of Spengler’s philosophical project.

Abstract:An introductory section discusses the utility of the algorithm concept in the historiographic analysis of non-recent mathematics, in particular the sense that can be given to claims that a particular mathematical culture was of algorithmic type. It concludes that the adequacy of this epithet when applied to a mathematical culture does not depend on whether texts used in teaching are built up around paradigmatic examples but on whether the production of rules or algorithms was regarded as a central activity for those whom we would count as "mathematicians" (that is, producers of mathematical knowledge). Three medieval examples of attitudes to algorithms follow. First, Jordanus de Nemore's De numeris datis is shown to develop a method to combine algorithms and deductivity, in an alternative to algebra. Second, Barthelemy de Romans' graphic schemes for organizing the complex algorithms used to solve the sophisticated variants of the problem of the "unknown heritage" are discussed. Third is considered Nicholas Chuquet's dismissal of these schemes and algorithms, in favour of the algebraic tool.
Modernist Literature and Modernist Mathematics I: Mathematics and Composition, with Mallarmé, Heisenberg, and Derrida

Abstract:This chapter addresses the relationships between modernist literature and modernist mathematics, as each grounded in the double movement from ontology to technology, specifically the technology of composition, and toward the self-determination of itself as a field. Emerging from this double movement, modernist thinking is defined by the irreducible unthinkable, the irreducible multiple, and irreducible randomness or chance. Three cases, I argue, powerfully exemplify this situation: Stéphane Mallarmé (1842–1898) at the onset of literary modernism, Kurt Gödel (1906–1978) at the height of mathematical modernism in the 1930s, and Werner Heisenberg (1901–1976), who pioneered the use of mathematical composition in physics, in the 1920s. I discuss Gödel and Mallarmé in the companion article in this volume, and here focus on Mallarmé and Heisenberg, considered via Jacques Derrida’s ideas.

Abstract:In relation to a thesis put forward by Marx Wartofsky, we seek to show that a historiography of mathematics requires an analysis of the ontology of the part of mathematics under scrutiny. Following Ian Hacking, we point out that in the history of mathematics the amount of contingency is larger than is usually thought. As a case study, we analyze the historians' approach to interpreting James Gregory's expression ultimate terms in his paper attempting to prove the irrationality of pi. Here Gregory referred to the last or ultimate terms of a series. More broadly, we analyze the following questions: which modern framework is more appropriate for interpreting the procedures at work in texts from the early history of infinitesimal analysis? as well as the related question: what is a logical theory that is close to something early modern mathematicians could have used when studying infinite series and quadrature problems? We argue that what has been routinely viewed from the viewpoint of classical analysis as an example of an "unrigorous" practice, in fact finds close procedural proxies in modern infinitesimal theories. We analyze a mix of social and religious reasons that had led to the suppression of both the religious order of Gregory's teacher degli Angeli, and Gregory's books at Venice, in the late 1660s.

Abstract:This text summarizes and expands the content of a general audience talk given in 2018 at the University of Mainz. Motivated by recent developments in dependent type theory and infinity category theory, it presents a history of ideas around the concepts of truth, proof, equality, and equivalence as well as their relation to human thought. We describe a few selected ideas of Platon, Aristoteles, Leibniz, Kant, Frege and others and then pass to the results of Gödel and Tarski about incompleteness, undecidability and truth in deductive systems and their semantic models. The main focus of this text, however, is the development of dependent type theory through the work of Per Martin--Löf and recent developments in homotopy type theory, i.e., the univalent foundations program of Vladimir Voevodsky and others. These theories allow the notion of identity types, which gives new possibilities for handling equality, symmetry, equivalence and isomorphisms in a conceptual way. Martin--Löf type theories have semantic models in (infinity,1)-categories, which are related to simplicial localizations of Quillen model categories. The interaction of type theory with infinity category theory is a new paradigm for a structural view on mathematics which is superior to set theory. It also supports the recent emerging trend for computer assisted proofs in mathematics and verification of algorithms and software in computer science.

Abstract:The research on the interpretation of mathematics as part of the sciences of mind, introduced as 'Geisteswissenschaften' in the German philosophy, reflects the relationship between mathematics and arts, including architecture. This study focuses on the early works of the philosopher Max Bense where he described the contours of an intellectual history of mathematics related to philosophy. He pointed out strong relationships between mathematics and all areas of human creation abilities. In particular, his investigations on the relationship between arts, including architecture, and mathematics in important historical phases reveal that the mathematics of an age is reflected aesthetically in the artistic styles or theories of art. His thesis posits that a high point in mathematics corresponds to a high point in art. Later on, Bense developed an aesthetic theory on the basis of mathematics, semiotics and information theory.

Abstract:This chapter is an attempt to show how mathematical thought has changed in the last two centuries. In fact, with the discovery of the so-called non-Euclidean Geometries, mathematical thinking changed profoundly. With the negation of the postulate for “antonomasia,” that is the uniqueness of the parallel for Euclid, and the construction of a geometric theory equally valid on the logical and coherence plane, called non-Euclidean geometry, the meaning of the word “postulate” or “axiom” changes radically. The axioms of a theory do not necessarily have to be dictated by real evidence. On this basis the constructions of arithmetic and geometry are built. The axiomatic-deductive method becomes the mathematical method. It will also highlight the constant link between mathematics and the reality that surrounds us, which tends to make itself explicit through an artificial, abstract language and with clear and certain grammatical rules. Finally, you will notice the connection with the existing technology, that is the new electronic and digital technology.

Abstract:Through a broad structural analysis and a close reading of Old Babylonian mathematica] "procedure texts" dealing mainly with problems of the second degree it is shown that Old Babylonian "algebra" was neither a "rhetorical algebra" dealing with numbers and arithmetical relations between numbers nor built on a set of fixed algorithmic procedures. Instead, the texts must be read as "naive" prescriptions for geometric analysis—naive in the sense that the results are seen by immediate intuition to be correct, but the question of correctness never raised—dealing with measured or measurable but unknown line segments, and making use of a set of operations and techniques different in structure from that of arithmetical algebra. The investigation involves a thorough discussion and re-interpretation of the technical terminology of Old Babylonian mathematics, elucidates many terms and procedures which have up to now been enigmatic, and makes many features stand out which had not been noticed before. The second-last chapter discusses the metamathematical problem, whether and to which extent we are then entitled to speak of an Old Babylonian algebra ; it also takes up the over-all implications of the investigation for the understanding of Old Babylonian patterns of thought. It is argued that these are not mythopoeic in the sense of H. and H. A. Frankfort, nor savage or cold in a Lévi-Straussian sense, nor however as abstract and modern as current interpretations of the mathematical texts would have them to be. The last chapter investigates briefly the further development of Babylonian "algebra" through the Seleucid era, demonstrating a clear arithmetization of the patterns of mathematical thought, the possible role of Babylonian geometrical analysis as inspiration for early Greek geometry, and the legacy of Babylonian "algebraic" thought to Medieval Islamic algebra.

Abstract:The paper investigates the notions of number, extensive quantity, algebraic quantity, similarity, and probability as introduced in Wolff’s mathematical writings, and evaluates the coherence of these definitions with Wolff’s presentation of the mathematical method. Wolff’s original epistemology is based on the belief that the discussion on the foundation of mathematics and on the history of mathematical ideas is essential not only to pure mathematics but also to its application and teaching. Mathematics is integrated into a larger body of knowledge and subordinated to philosophy, which explains the impurity of definitions and proofs and why certain notions, such as that of similarity and probability, cannot be understood without reference to ontology and logic. Wolff’s investigation of probable propositions allowed for a unique demonstrative methodology applied to philosophical, mathematical, and historical knowledge, because he described probable reasoning as an insufficient knowledge of the requisites for the truth of the premises. This explains the importance assigned to the right order of concepts and the inferential role of definitions. The paper shows the internal coherence between Wolff’s choice of mathematical definitions and his overall epistemology, and underlines the heritage of Descartes, of Barrow’s edition of Euclid’s Elements and of Aristotle’s notion of contiguity rather than the influence exerted by Leibniz’s mathematics or by Newton’s fluxional conception of geometrical quantities.
