Abstract:The successful synthesis of rare earth doped nano/microcrystals with the desired morphology, uniform monodispersity, and intense infrared emission is of fundamental significance, and would facilitate their application in infrared emission-related miniaturization and integration in optoelectronics. However, simultaneously controlling the morphology and enhancing the infrared emission through simple and effective methods has not been well explored. In this study, via Ca2+ doping with an optimized concentration of 25 mol% in the hydrothermal solution, irregular NaGdF4:Yb/ Er submicrocrystals converted into highly uniform submicrorods. Meanwhile, an obvious enhancement of visible upconversion (UC) and near-infrared (NIR) downconversion ( DC) emission were obtained, probably due to the improved morphology and lowering the local crystal field symmetry around the rare earth ions induced by Ca2+ doping. Furthermore, Ce3+ ions with an optimized concentration of 2 mol% were codoped to intentionally tailor the branching ratio through efficient energy transfer from Er3+ to Ce3+. As a result, the similar to 1530 nm emission intensity of the NaGdF4: 25Ca/2Ce/20Yb/2Er submicrorods increased by about 6.4 times in comparison with the NaGdF4:20Yb/2Er counterpart.

Abstract:Multicolour colloidal PEI/NaGdF4:Ce3+, Ln(3+) (Ln = Tb, Eu, Sm or Dy) nanocrystals were synthesized using a simple one-pot hydrothermal procedure. The nanocrystals consist of well crystallized hexagonal phase and have an elongated spherical shape, with diameters between 25 and 45 nm. Under single-wavelength excitation at 254 nm in the ultraviolet (UV) region, the nanocrystals doped with different lanthanide ions show intense visible (VIS) emissions of different colours. The characteristic luminescence property of the nanocrystals can be attributed to strong absorption of the UV irradiation by the Ce3+, followed by energy transfer to (via Gd3+ sublattice) and emission from the luminescent centres.

Abstract:In this work, hexagonal crown-capped beta-NaYF4:Ce3+/Gd3+/Dy3+ microrods with remarkably uniform morphology and size have been successfully synthesized for the first time via a facile hydrothermal route. The phase and morphology evolution of beta-NaYF4 crystals are carefully tracked during hydrothermal growth by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and transmission electron diffraction (TEM), respectively. The possible growth mechanism of hexagonal crown-capped NaYF4 microrods has been proposed. Furthermore, the luminescence properties of beta-NaYF4:Ce3+/Gd3+/Dy3+ are systemically investigated by the photoluminescence excitation spectra, emission spectra and decay curves. Impressively, upon the allowed Ce3+ 4f-5d electronic transition excitation, the efficient energy transfer from sensitizer (Ce3+) to activator (Dy3+) occurs via energy migration process Ce3+ -> (Gd3+)(n) -> Dy3+, in which Gd3+ ions act as bridge centers to induce intense yellow luminescence from Dy3+ activators. Abstract:Trivalent lanthanide ion (Ln3+) doped UC materials can emit visible light under near-infrared (NIR) excitation due to anti-stokes shift and have received wide attention. In this paper, we presented a new strategy to synthesize the uniform and smooth microstructures (rodlike and tubular) based on hexagonal phase NaYF4 microcrystals. Moreover, we systematically discussed the method of enhancing the upconversion (UC) luminescence intensity via co-doping the ions with different valences (Li+ and Lu3+) in order to tailor the environment around lanthanide ions. The UC intensities in the two microstructures were significantly improved. The results suggested the great application potential of tubes and rods of β-NaYF4 microcrystals in anti-counterfeiting, laser media, photonic crystals, and waveguides.

Abstract:Octahedral [CaY]F-2 crystals with an average particle size of 1 mu m were synthesized via a mild one-step hydrothermal route without employing any surfactants. Various morphologies, including cubes, truncated cubes, truncated octahedrons, and spheres, were achieved via manipulating the amount of EDTA used, and a possible growth mechanism was proposed based on the surface energies of different crystal planes and the influence of the surfactant. XRD, SEM, EDS, TEM, HRTEM, and PL analysis were used to characterize the products. The effects of the morphologies and Li+ doping concentrations on the luminescence intensities of the [CaY]F-2:Ce3+/Tb3+ phosphors were explored, and the strongest luminescence intensity is obtained when the sample is cubic with (100) crystal faces and the doping concentration of Li+ is 0.25 mol%. Additionally, multicolor emission (blue -> aquamarine blue -> green) was obtained from [CaY]F-2:Ce3+/Tb3+ phosphors via adjusting the doping concentration of Tb3+, which resulted from the Ce3+ -> Tb3+ energy transfer behavior; the energy transfer here happened through a dipole-dipole mechanism. This work may result in the as-synthesized phosphors having great application potential in many optoelectronic device fields, such as in displays and multicolor lighting.

Abstract:Rational control over the uniform morphology and size of hexagonal NaYF4 has been achieved via a facile hydrothermal route. The evolution of particle morphology from peg-top-like to hexagonal microprisms with protruding centers and the long tubelike morphology with concave wedge and finally to solely microrods been demonstrated by increasing the F−/Ln3+ molar ratio, all other parameters being equal. Rationally controlling the shape of hexagonal NaYF4 is of great importance due to their strongly shape-dependent optical properties. Moreover, the systematic study on the photoluminescence of 20%Yb3+, 1%Er3+-doped β-NaYF4 with different shapes shows that the upconversion (UC) properties of these products are strongly dependent on the combined roles of morphologies, crystallinity, and particle sizes. In particular, the microrods evince a better PL signal as compared with others.

Abstract:Hexagonal phase NaGdF4 microrods have been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as the structure-directing agent. The additive amounts of NaF and NaNO3 as well as the reaction time have great effect on the morphology evolution of the products. A possible growth mechanism was proposed for the formation of β-NaGdF4 microrods. Under the excitation of 980nm near-infrared laser, bright green upconversion (UC) emissions can be readily achieved from NaGdF4:10%Yb3+,1%Er3+ microrods. In addition, the NaGdF4 microrods exhibit excellent paramagnetic features with the magnetization value of 5.02emu/g (18kOe) at room temperature. Both the UC luminescent and magnetic properties are closely related to the size of as-prepared products. These multifunctional β-NaGdF4 microrods would have potential applications in the fields such as solid-state lasers, lighting, displays, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and so on.

Abstract:NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals with different structures and sizes have been synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Structures and sizes of the NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals are carefully investigated by changing the Gd3+ ion concentrations and reaction temperatures. It is found that the change of Gd3+ doping concentration and reaction temperature not only induces the phase transition but also causes the size difference. The introduction of Gd3+ ions can promote the phase change from cubic to hexagonal structures, which exhibit the different morphologies (nanoparticle vs nanorods). However, by increasing the reaction temperature slightly, the hexagonal structures can be formed with very low or even without any Gd3+ ions. It is shown that the enhanced up-conversion emission can be achieved by well controlling the Gd3+ ion concentrations at the certain reaction temperature to get the pure nanorods structures with suitable sizes.

Abstract:Hexagonal NaYF4∶ Yb/Er microcrystals were prepared by a facile trisodium citrate-assisted hydrothermal method. The microparticles were characterized by TEM,X-ray diffraction(XRD),and luminescent spectra. Intense green upconversion luminescence was observed under 980 nm excitation. By introducing Ca2+ dopants into the grain lattices,the upconversion luminescence intensity of NaYF4∶ Yb/Er microcrystal was improved significantly. The enhancement is proposed to originate from a modification of the crystal structure and an improvement in the crystallinity of NaYF4∶ Yb/Er microcrystals.

Abstract:β-phase NaGdF4 nanocrystals doped with Er3+ and Yb3+ possessing diverse morphologies were synthesized from the thermolysis of trifluoroacetate precursors in 1-octadecene and oleic acid by modifying the hot-injection strategy. Modulation of the injection temperature during the hot-injection step was an effective approach to control the size and shape of the prepared nanocrystals and allowed for the direct synthesis of nanorods. Here, we report for the first time the fabrication of monodispersed uniform nanorods through a one-step thermolysis approach. Abstract:Different concentrations of Mg2+-doped hexagonal phase NaGdF4: Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized by a modified solvothermal method. Successful codoping of Mg2+ ions in upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) was supported by XRD, SEM, EDS, and PL analyses. The effects of Mg2+ doping on the morphology and the intensity of the upconversion (UC) emission were discussed in detail. It turned out that with the concentration of Mg2+ increasing, the morphology of the nanoparticles turn to change gradually and the UC emission was increasing gradually as well. Notably the UC fluorescence intensities of Er3+ were gradually improved owing to the codoped Mg2+ and then achieved a maximum level as the concentration of Mg2+ ions was 60 mol% from the amendment of the crystal structure of beta-NaGdF4: Yb3+, Er3+ nanoparticles. Moreover, the UC luminescence properties of the rare-earth (Yb3+, Er3+) ions codoped NaGdF4 nanocrystals were investigated in detail under 980-nm excitation.

Abstract:Cubic nanocrystal and hexagonal micro-rods NaYF4, with predictable size, shape and phase, have been successfully synthesized through hydrothermal reaction. The growth mechanism and the effect of mass transfer on the morphology of hexagonal micro-prism are both discussed in detail. The increase of tri-doping lanthanide ion concentration decreased the size of crystal particle, which was explained by the Arrhenius rate equation together combined with the Gibbs-Thomson relationship. Furthermore, the dopants did not only affect the sizes of tri-doped NaYF4 micro-rods, but also impacted upon fluorescence intensity. The fluorescence of tri-doped NaYF4: Nd3+/Yb3+/Er3+ system, excited by an 800 nm femtolaser, was intensified with the increase of doped lanthanide ions concentration. Nevertheless owing to the fluorescence quenching, the other two systems (NaYF4: Nd3+/Ho3+/Er3+ and NaYF4: Nd3+/Tm3+/Er3+) did not show the same phenomenon.

Abstract:Cerium and europium codoped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG:Ce,Eu) nano phosphors were prepared by sol-gel method. We systematically explored the structure, composition, morphology and photoluminescence (PL) properties by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, high resolution transmission electron microscope, energy dispersive spectrometer, photoluminescence emission and excitation spectra techniques, and focused on clarifying the change of local structure surrounding Ce3+ ions by utilizing advanced quantitative Al-27 magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results show that the lattice constant slightly increases as the Ce3+ and Eu3+ ions incorporate, and the geometric distortion of local structure surrounding Ce3+ activator introduced by the incorporated Eu3+ coactivator causes the variation of crystal field, which results in red shift of Ce3+ PL emitting in YAG:Ce,Eu nanophosphor. Furthermore, the YAG:Ce,Eu nanophosphors could exhibit several sharp and narrow D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J = 1 similar to 4) emissions of Eu3+ ion besides the classic broad 5d(1) -> 4 integral(F-2(5/2), F-2(7/2)) emissions of Ce3+ ion under near ultraviolet (UV) excitation.

Abstract:In this study, Cr3+ and Mg2+ co-doped beta-NaYF4:Yb3+Er3+ (NYFYE) microcrystals were synthesized for the first time by the facile hydrothermal method. CP3+ and Mg2+ co-doping was confirmed to influence the structure, morphology and UCL property of NYFYE microcrystals. The growth mechanism of NYFYE microcrystals doped with different Cr3+ and Mg2+ was discussed in detail. With 16 mol% Cr3+ and 4 mol% Mg2+ co-doping into NYFYE, the UC emissions were enhanced to 7 times (green) and 4 times (red) higher than those of the undoped counterpart, and the mechanism was explored by considering the different roles of Cr3+ and Mg2+, the surface quenching and concentration quenching effects. This finding suggests the co-doping of two different impurity ions may be a better approach than corresponding single impurity ion doping for morphology control and UCL intensity enhancement, which is instructive for high performance UC crystals design.

Abstract:The morphology, size and phase control of luminescent fluoride nanocrystals through doping has become a new research hotspot due to their improved properties. In this work, Yb(3+) ions, as one of the most efficient sensitizers for various lanthanide activators, were doped in NaGd(Y)F(4) nanocrystals. The results show that no obvious influence was observed for Yb(3+)-doped NaYF(4) nanocrystals, while the influence of Yb(3+) doping on NaGdF(4) nanocrystals was remarkable. The NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals were synthesized by a hydrothermal route and had a morphology of rice-like nanorods. By controlling the synthesis parameters, the average size and slenderness of the nanocrystals increased gradually with addition of Yb(3+) ions. In contrast, the NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals maintained a hexagonal phase, which is more beneficial for application as a luminescent host, until the content of Yb(3+) ions reached x = 0.9. The growth and transformation mechanism of NaGd(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals was proposed to be a result of the competition between ion diffusion and an Oswald ripening process. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra confirm the efficient up-conversion and near-infrared (NIR) two-model luminescence properties of Er(3+) (Tm(3+)) activated NaGd(Y)(1-x)Yb(x)F(4) nanocrystals. Simulated analysis results indicate that a colloidal solution of mixed luminescent nanocrystals is expected to find application as the activated medium of three dimensional displays and a broadband optical amplifier.

Abstract:A series of β-NaYF4 microrods doped with Yb 3+/Er3+ have been successfully synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method. The fluoride microcrystals have been characterized by XRD, SEM, and the photoluminescence spectra method. The upconversion spectra show that the output light color have been tuned from green to red under near infrared excitation at 977 nm when replacing Y3+ ions with a different amount of Yb3+ in NaYF4:Yb/Er microcrystals. The effect of the intrinsic structural feature of fluoride compounds and four external factors, namely the concentration of Yb3+, the concentration of Er3+, the particle size and the use of an organic additive (EDTA), on the ultimate output light color of samples are investigated detailedly. The results show that the output light color is more sensitive to the concentration of Yb3+ than that of Er3+. When elevated the concentration of dopants (Er3+ or Yb3+) in the NaYF4 host lattice, the cross-relaxation process derived from Er 3+ promoted the red emission and quenched the green emission. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
