Abstract:China is facing intense pressure and severe challenge in carbon reduction. CO_2 capture and storage (CCS) technology is considered to be an effective and feasible way for the reduction of greenhouse gas emission. Among the emerging technologies, CO_2 capture by ionic liquids (ILs) has gained extensive attention. Ionic liquids are considered to be promising alternatives for chemical solvents. Despite the extensive research on CO_2 by ILs, almost all the previous studies focused on the absorption of pure CO_2 or CO_2 with high concentration, which is far away from real flue gas condition. Although the concentration of SO_2 in real flue gas is relatively low, ILs also show large absorption capacity for SO_2. To the best of our knowledge, simultaneous absorption of CO_2 and SO_2 in ILs has not been well understood. In this work the simultaneous absorption experiments and the theoretical calculations were conducted to investigate the absorption behavior of CO_2 and SO_2 in flue gas by ionic liquids. Moreover, the interplay of CO_2 and SO_2 in ionic liquids and their interaction mechanisms were well studied through the theoretical calculations. Results showed that during the simultaneous absorption process, SO_2 occupies some of the sorption active sites leading to lower CO_2 absorption capacity. The occurrence of SO_2 in flue gas was an obstacle for CO_2 separation by ionic liquids. There is a competition relationship between CO_2 and SO_2, and ionic liquids showed stronger affinity toward SO_2 than CO_2.
