Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:The three-dimensional flowerlike TiO2 microstructure was successfully deposited on the surface of activated carbon fibers (ACFs) pre-coated with TiO2 seed layer via a hydrothermal process. The flowerlike structure was constructed by rutile-phased TiO2 rods and the formation mechanism of anchoring TiO2 onto ACF to form the TiO2/ACF composite was also discussed. The TiO2/ACF exhibited a relatively higher photocatalytic activity than the nanometer rutile TiO2 in the degradation of methyl orange, presumably due to a red shift, restraint of the photogenerated hole and electron recombination and high light-harvesting efficiency. In addition, the TiO2/ACF is favorable to reuse by emptying off the supernatant solution.

Abstract:Different surface morphologies of TiO2 thin films were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method on Ti substrates through changing reaction time. The microstructure, composition, optical properties and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 thin films were systematically investigated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. As the reaction time increases, anatase structure and brookite structure of TiO2 films respectively increases and decreases, corresponding to surface morphology changes from irregular structure to regular geometrical shape structure. These structural changes are accompanied by significant variations of optical properties and photocatalytic properties including a widening of the band gap from 2.86 to 3.19 eV, photocatalytic degradation efficiency from 92.5 to 98.1% and photocatalytic degradation rate from 0.032 to 0.048 min(-1). Among all samples, TiO2-1 shows the best photocatalytic properties. Compositional analysis indicates that TiO2 surface layer contains Ti and O elements, the ratio of Ti:O is 1:2.28 which is close to the atom ratio of TiO2. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Hierarchical flower-like H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O assembled with radial nanowires was fabricated via a template-free solution-based reaction, and was converted to TiO2 with distinct phases and morphologies by the subsequent acid-treating or annealing. The HCl treatment achieved the controllable conversion from titanate nanowires to rutile nanorods by varying the temperature and acidity. When compared with the as-synthesized titanate nanowires and the thoroughly transformed rutile nanorods, their mixtures were found to exhibit the best dye adsorption ability towards rhodamine B and methylene blue in water. The H2Ti5O11 center dot 3H(2)O nanowires decomposed in sequence to anatase and rutile after a subsequent calcination in air, via an intermediate phase of H2Ti4O9 center dot H2O. The hierarchical structure could be retained up to 800 degrees C. When utilized as photocatalysts to degrade rhodamine B in water, the 550 degrees C-calcinated powder, with mixed phases of anatase, rutile, and srilankite, demonstrated the highest photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Two new Ni-doped titanium-oxo clusters of the formula [Ni 2 Ti 4 ( μ 3 -O) 2 ( μ 2 -O) 2 (BA) 12 (CH 3 CN)(H 2 O)]∙CH 3 CN ( Ti 4 Ni 2 BA 12 ; BA = benzoate) and [Ni 2 Ti 4 ( μ 3 -O) 2 ( μ 2 -O) 2 (O 2 C t Bu) 6 (MA) 4 (OQ) 2 ] ( Ti 4 Ni 2 OQ 2 ; MA = methylacrylate, HOQ = 8-hydroxyquinoline) were synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses show that the two clusters have similar Ti 4 Ni 2 cluster core consisting of a {Ti 4 ( μ 3 -O) 2 ( μ 2 -O) 2 } ring connected with two Ni atoms. The clusters were functionalized with benzoate and 8-quinolinolate ligands, respectively. Compared to benzoate ligand, the coordination of 8-quinolinolate to the cluster core in Ti 4 Ni 2 OQ 2 leads to enhanced visible-light absorption due to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer transition. In the photocatalytic tests, Ti 4 Ni 2 OQ 2 exhibits remarkably promoted catalytic performance for visible-light-driven photocatalytic oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene.

Au Cluster Anchored on TiO 2 /ti 3 C 2 Hybrid Composites for Efficient Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction

Abstract:The size of metal nanoparticles is a key factor to enhance the photocatalytic activity of photocatalysts.However,the mechanism of this factor to the improvement of photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance is still unclear.Here,Au cluster/TiO2/Ti3C2 and Au nanoparticle/TiO2/Ti3C2 were successfully prepared by deposition-precipitation method.The experimental results show that the photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance of Au cluster/TiO2/Ti3C2 with quantum size effect is stronger than that of Au nanoparticle/TiO2/Ti3C2 with surface plasmon resonance.The enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity is assigned to the establishment of an overlapping orbital between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital(LUMO)of the Au cluster and the anti-bonding orbital of CO2,which greatly promotes the acti-vation efficiency of CO2.The existence of Au cluster and the mechanism of photocatalytic CO2 reduction perfor-mance were certified by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy(HAADF-STEM)and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(ISFTIR).This work may open new opportunities for the establishment of stable and active metal nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on Ti-oxo clusters (Ti-MOFs) represent a naturally self-assembled superlattice of TiO2 nanoparticles separated by designable organic linkers as antenna chromophores, epitomizing a promising platform for solar energy conversion. However, despite the vast, diverse, and well-developed Ti-cluster chemistry, only a scarce number of Ti-MOFs have been documented. The synthetic conditions of most Ti-based clusters are incompatible with those required for MOF crystallization, which has severely limited the development of Ti-MOFs. This challenge has been met herein by the discovery of the [Ti8Zr2O12(COO)16] cluster as a nearly ideal building unit for photoactive MOFs. A family of isoreticular photoactive MOFs were assembled, and their orbital alignments were fine-tuned by rational functionalization of organic linkers under computational guidance. These MOFs demonstrate high porosity, excellent chemical stability, tunable photoresponse, and good activity toward photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions. The discovery of the [Ti8Zr2O12(COO)16] cluster and the facile construction of photoactive MOFs from this cluster shall pave the way for the development of future Ti-MOF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Exploring inorganic flower-like nanosheets is of increasing interest not only for fundamental research, but also for development of devices due to their good chemical stability, versatility, and high surface-to-volume ratio. In this work, flower-like TiO 2 nanosheets (FTN) are successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. Notably, a series of single-factor experiments are carried out to drive multiple functional components in order to integrate into a single flower-like nanostructure perfectly. In addition, these experimental results further reveal that alcohol/glycerol molar ratio acts in a vital role for preparing optimal flower-like morphology and structure of TiO 2 . Furthermore, the photodegradation pathways and mechanism of Levofloxacin (LVOF) by FTN are shown according to photodegradation intermediates of LVOF, trapping experiments, and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) sensitizing effect. Therefore, the present work not only demonstrates the controlled synthesis of flower-like TiO 2 nanosheets, but also provides a guide for constructing other inorganic flower-like nanosheets or TiO 2 -based photocatalysts with optimal morphology, structure and photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Hollow TiO2 nanocages with rubik-like structure were synthesized via a combined hydrolysis/hydrothermal method. Firstly, highly uniform Cu2O nanocubes covered by TiO2 layer were prepared by hydrothermal hydrolysis of (NH4)2TiF6 following by reducing copper-citrate complex with ascorbic acid. The Cu2O core templates could be easily removed in dilute HCl solution to form a hollow rubik-like structure. The obtained TiO2 nanocages show promising efficiency in the photocatalytic degradation of phenol pollutions.
Hierarchical TiO2 Nanoflakes and Nanoparticles Hybrid Structure for Improved Photocatalytic Activity

Abstract:Three-dimensional TiO2 microspheres with different hierarchical nanostructures were synthesized by the synergistic strategies of ultrafast electrochemical spark discharge spallation process followed by thermal treatment. The morphology, crystal structure, surface area, and photocatalytic activity of the hierarchical nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, surface area analysis, and UV-vis spectroscopy respectively. The nanostructure of hierarchical microspheres undergoes three evolution steps, which includes the change from nanosheets into hybrid nanoflakes/nanoparticles and finally to nanoparticles as calcination temperature increases, in line with the predicable trend of increase in crystallinity and decrease in specific surface area. Compared to other forms of calcined TiO2 samples (nanosheets and na.noparticles), the hybrid TiO2 nanoflake/nanoparticle hierarchical porous structure exhibits a higher photocatalytic activity for the degradation of organic compounds (methyl orange and bisphenol A). This is attributed to their larger specific surface area (similar to 116 m(2)/g), more abundant porosity, and good crystallinity. On the basis of this hybrid structure, a visible light sensitive Ag/TiO2 microsphere photocatalyst is designed which shows faster degradation rate under the visible light illumination (>420 nm). The porous microspheric photocatalyst does not lose its activities after recycled use, showing great potential for practical application in environmental cleanup.

Abstract:Pure rutile phase crystalline TiO2 powder with novel 3D dandelion-like structure was synthesized by using a facile hydrothermal method with TiCl3 as the main starting material. In such a 3D structure, the nanometer-scale construction elements aggregate together and form a micrometer-scale artificial unit. The typical 3D dandelion structure has an average diameter of 1.5–2μm and is packed radially by nanorods with [001] preference growth direction. Each individual nanorod is hundreds of nanometers in length, and tens of nanometers in diameter. The obtained 3D dandelion-like TiO2 powder has a high photocatalytic activity, which is equivalent to that of the commercial available P25 titania powder. Mechanisms of the formation of the dandelion-like structure were also discussed. A different oxidation process of Ti(III) to Ti(IV) during hydrothermal was suggested.

Abstract:Hierarchical tubular micro-nano structured AgCl/Ag/TiO2 hybrids were successfully prepared via impregnation-hydrolyzation-calcination method combining with photo-reduction method. And the fluff of chinar tree (denoted as FCT) was employed as template; TiCl4 and AgNO3 were used as titanium and chlorine source, and Ag source, respectively. The characterization results showed that the as-prepared AgCl/Ag/TiO2 hybrid possessed hierarchical tube structure and the template of FCT was crucial in inducing and assembling the unique structure of AgCl/Ag/TiO2. The dosage of AgNO3 also had significant influence on the morphology and structure of the resultant sample. The catalytic activity of AgCl/Ag/TiO2 was affected by the mass ratio of AgCl, Ag and TiO2 in hybrids. At the appropriate mass ratio of AgCl, Ag and TiO2, the resultant sample could degrade 96% tetracycline hydrochloride (TH, 10 mg L−1) after visible light irradiation 3 h. It also exhibited well stable photocatalytic activity under visible light after four cycles. The favorable activity and stability should be due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects of Ag substance and the intimate connection among Ag, AgCl and TiO2 in AgCl/Ag/TiO2. It could broaden the range of light absorption and accelerate the charge migration. The results of the trapping experiments indicated that the •O2− radicals are the vital active species of oxidation during the photocatalytic degradation process.

Abstract:The controlled synthesis of titanium-oxo clusters (TOCs) completely stabilized by organic dye ligands with high stability and superior light absorption remains a significant challenge. In this study, we report the syntheses of three atomically precise catechol (Cat)-functionalized TOCs, [Ti2(Cat)2(OEgO)2(OEgOH)2] (Ti2), [Ti8O5(Cat)9(iPrO)4(iPrOH)2] (Ti8), and [Ti16O8(OH)8(Cat)20]·H2O·PhMe (Ti16), using a solvent-induced strategy (HOEgOH = ethylene glycol; iPrOH = isopropanol; PhMe = toluene). Interestingly, the TiO core of Ti16 is almost entirely enveloped by catechol ligands, making it the first all-catechol-protected high-nuclearity TOC. In contrast, Ti2 and Ti8 have four weakly coordinated ethylene glycol ligands and six weakly coordinated iPrOH ligands, respectively, in addition to the catechol ligands. Ti16 is visually evident in its distinctively black appearance, which belongs to black TOCs (B-TOCs) and exhibits an ultralow optical band gap. Furthermore, Ti16 displays exceptional stability in various mediums/environments, including exposure to air, solvents, and both acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions due to its comprehensive protection by catechol ligands and rich intra-cluster supramolecular interactions. Ti16 has superior photoelectric response qualities and photothermal conversion capabilities compared to Ti2 and Ti8 due to its ultralow optical band gap and remarkable stability. This discovery not only represents a huge step forward in the creation of all-catecholate-protected B-TOCs with ultralow optical band gap and outstanding stability, but it also gives key valuable mechanistic insights into their photothermal/electric applications.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Large-scale flower-like TiO 2 nanostructures with diameter about 300 nm were synthesized via a simple solution route at a near room temperature. The samples characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results show that the flower-like nanostructures are composed of nanorods which with diameter about 10-20 nm and the lengths about 80-150 nm. The performance of flower-like TiO 2 nanostructures as the photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was investigated. The high surface area flower-like TiO 2 nanostructures are also very attractive in the fields of environmental pollutants removal.

Abstract:A template-free process for the synthesis of nanocrystalline TiO2 hierarchical microstructures by reactive Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) is here presented. By a proper choice of deposition parameters a fine control over the morphology of TiO2 microstructures is demonstrated, going from classical compact/columnar films to a dense forest of distinct hierarchical assemblies of ultrafine nanoparticles (<10 nm), up to a more disordered, aerogel-type structure. Correspondingly, film density varies with respect to bulk TiO2 anatase, with a degree of porosity going from 48% to over 90%. These structures are stable with respect to heat treatment at 400 centigrade degrees, which results in crystalline ordering but not in morphological changes down to the nanoscale. Both as deposited and annealed films exhibit very promising photocatalytic properties, even superior to standard Degussa P25 powder, as demonstrated by the degradation of stearic acid as a model molecule. The observed kinetics are correlated to the peculiar morphology of the PLD grown material. We show that the 3D multi-scale hierarchical morphology enhances reaction kinetics and creates an ideal environment for mass transport and photon absorption, maximizing the surface area-to-volume ratio while at the same time providing readily accessible porosity through the large inter-tree spaces that act as distributing channels. The reported strategy provides a versatile technique to fabricate high aspect ratio 3D titania microstuctures through a hierarchical assembly of ultrafine nanoparticles. Beyond photocatalytic and catalytic applications, this kind of material could be of interest for those applications where high surface-to-volume and efficient mass transport are required at the same time.
