Abstract:Flowerlike nanometer scaled tin oxide (nano-SnO2) was synthesized by a novel and green method without annealing. Accordingly, a dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) gas sensor based on a quartz crystal microbalance was fabricated and studied. According to the experimental results, the sensor with the flowerlike nano-SnO2 sensing film working at room temperature exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity as well as a rapid response to DMMP. An environmentally friendly idea to synthesize material in a green way and fabricate sensors to detect harmful or toxic gases was realized.
Ionic liquid-assisted synthesis of In2O3 nanoparticles for ppb-level NO2 sensing at low temperature

Abstract:Highly sensitive detection of nitric dioxide (NO2) has recently attracted much attention due to its harmful to the human health even at a low concentration of 0.1 parts per million (ppm). Herein, In2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared via a facile ionic liquid (IL) assisted solvothermal method with subsequent calcination and then were analyzed through the characterization of X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption techniques. Morphological characterization demonstrated that the resultant compounds were In2O3 NPs with a diameter ranging from 20 to 30 nm. The gas sensor based on the In2O3 NPs prepared with IL exhibited excellent NO2-sensing properties in terms of fast response/recovery speed (26.6/10.0 s), high response (310.0), good repeatability and long-term stability to 10 ppm NO2 gas at low working temperature of 92 °C. The gas-sensing mechanism of In2O3 NPs to NO2 was represented to the surface adsorption control model and the possibilities relating to the improved NO2 sensing performance of the In2O3 NPs synthesized with IL-assisted were also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Herein, a strategy is proposed for the self-assembly hybrid hierarchical structure of a WO3 nanosheets/W18O49 nanowires (HHW) composite via a one-step hydrothermal method. The method requires only H2O and surfactants to regulate the hydrolysis rate of tungsten ions to yield the desired morphology. The self-assembled growth of the hierarchical structures is principally governed by the competition and equilibrium between the surfactant concentration, precipitation coefficient, and hydrolysis rate of tungsten ions. The hybrid hierarchical HHW material exhibits an ultrahigh-sensitive response, up to 1678 upon exposure to 10 ppm of NO2, which demonstrates a significant enhancement over that of conventional hierarchical gas-sensitive nanosheet or nanowire materials. The ultrahigh-sensitive response and excellent selectivity toward NO2 by HHW is considered to derive from the synergistic effect of rapid electron separation and transport by the W18O49 nanowires and the abundance of adsorption sites offered by the WO3 nanosheets. This low-cost and rapid synthesis of self-assembled hybrid hierarchical materials provides an effective strategy for high-performance gas sensors or catalysts.
Facile solvothermal synthesis of ZnO/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites for NO2 detection at low working temperature

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide sensors with high performance have been expected for practical applications in environmental monitoring. Herein, we demonstrate a NO2 gas sensor with enhanced performance based on ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites. The hawthorn shaped ZnO spheres/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites with regular morphology are successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. The NO2 sensing properties are greatly improved by introducing the Ti3C2Tx sheets which significantly reduce the operating temperature and improve the gas sensitivity. The response to 8 ppm NO2 improves to 3.4, and the response and recovery characteristic substantially speeds up to 191 s and 254 s at lower working temperature. The excellent NO2 sensing properties of ZnO/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites are attributed to the high surface area, the modulation of carrier density, the formation of ZnO/Ti3C2Tx heterojunction. Such excellent performance showed the promising application of hawthorn shaped ZnO spheres/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites for NO2 gas sensing.

Abstract:Here we demonstrate a facile synthesis of nanoparticle-assembled mesoporous ZnO sheets by calcination of a novel sheet-like delta-Zn(OH)(2) precursor at low temperature (100 degrees C). The mesoporous ZnO sheets were assembled by ultrasmall ZnO nanoparticles with an average crystal size less than 10 nm, having a high specific surface area of 87.63 m(2) g(-1). The high specific surface area, rich mesopores and oxygen vacancies, and the small crystal size of the ZnO nanoparticles contributed to the good NO2 sensing performance of the sensors. The comparison study indicated that the mesoporous ZnO sheets assembled by the smallest nanoparticles exhibited the highest response to ppm level of NO2 at room temperature (the response to 1 ppm of NO2 was 135%). Moreover, the sensor exhibited high response/recovery rates, full reversibility and good selectivity to NO2. Based on the surface depletion model, the higher response of the mesoporous ZnO sheets assembled by the smaller nanoparticles was attributed to their more significant narrowing of the conduction channel upon exposure to NO2. Abstract:Semiconductor tin oxide (SnO2) is acknowledged to be one of the semiconductor oxides with most potential for utilization as nitrogen dioxide (NO2)-sensor materials. However, the challenge to improve the gas sensitivity still remains, and this limits the full realization of the SnO2 sensor potential. In this paper, enhanced gas sensitivity obtained by the formation of a SnO2/niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) hybrid structure is reported. As the NO2 concentration is lower to 3 ppm, the measured resistance in the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor is still 2.5 times larger than that in a pristine SnO2-based sensor. With an increase in the NO2 concentration, the response time of the SnO2/Nb2O5-based sensor decreases sharply whereas the pristine SnO2-based sensor response time increases. The enhanced performance is attributed to the presence of more oxygen vacancies and a higher specific surface area in the hybrid structure induced by the introduction of Nb2O5. These results provide some general guidelines for the selection of compositions to enhance the sensor performance.
Synthesis of Mesoporous CuOx Using Inverse Micelle Sol–gel Process for NO2 Gas Sensing

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a highly dangerous gas, mostly emitting emitted from fossil fuels, and a major contributor to air pollution. It has negatively effects affects on the human health as well asand contributes to environmental issues like acid rain. In this study, mesoporous CuOx nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized using a low-temperature inverse micelle sol–gel method. Subsequently, the synthesized NPs were annealed at temperatures of 250, 350, and 450 °C. Advanced characterization of the synthesized samples revealed that upon with increasing the annealing temperature, the sizes of the NPs increased, whileereas their surface areas decreased. The sample annealed at 250°C showed a remarkably higher surface area (161.85 m2/g) compared with the samples annealed at 350 °C (39.88 m2/g) and 450 °C (22.52 m2/g) thanks to finer particle sizes and a mesoporous nature. Resistive gas sensors incorporating these samples were successfully fabricated and tested for sensitivity towards both NO2 (oxidizing gas) and H2S (reducing gas) at 200 °C. The sensor with the mesoporous CuOx NPs annealed at the lowest temperature (250 °C) exhibited an enhanced response to NO2 gas but no response to H2S. The strong response to NO2 gas is considered to be due to the high surface area of the sensing layer which provides plenty of adsorption sites for gas molecules and the oxidizing nature of NO2 gas with high affinity to electrons. These findings highlight the effectiveness of the inverse micelle sol–gel method forin synthesizing mesoporous CuOx NPs for gas sensing, as well as the need for to optimizing optimize the annealing temperature to maximize the sensor response.

Abstract:Very recently, metal–organic framework (MOF)-based derived oxides demonstrated excellent sensing performance to NO2. However, the study on the enhancement of gas-sensing characteristics by near-infrared (NIR) light for MOF-based derived oxides is still limited. In this work, we introduced the synthesis of MOF-derived SnO2 nanosheets by solvothermal and annealing processes. The structural composition and microstructure of SnO2 nanosheets were studied by X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller. The derived SnO2 nanosheet-based gas sensor has an extremely low theoretical detection limit to NO2 (45 ppb), ultrahigh response (1500 to 100 ppm), outstanding stability, and ideal selectivity. Furthermore, NIR illumination shortens the SnO2 sensor’s NO2 adsorption/desorption process. Moreover, we also proposed that NIR-excited photoelectrons were instrumental in optimizing the NO2 gas-sensing performance of SnO2 sensors. Therefore, MOF-based SnO2 sensors are attractive for high response and rapid detection of NO2 at low operating temperatures and are expected to be widely used in the preparation of NIR-enhanced NO2 gas monitoring sensors.

Abstract:It is of great significance to develop gas sensors with fast and high response under low energy consumption for practical monitoring of harmful gases in industrial production and environment. In this work, hydrangea-like CuO material constructed by porous nanosheets with a specific surface area of 42.45 m 2 · g −1 was synthesized by a simple one-step solution method without the addition of surfactant. It has good sensing performance to 10 ppm NO 2 ( S = 133.6) and short response time (4 s) at near room temperature (50 °C), which is significantly superior to most CuO based NO 2 gas sensors reported so far. The good gas sensing properties may be attributed to the synergistic effect of large specific surface area and two-dimensional porous structure. Therefore, hydrangea-like CuO may become a popular sensitive material capable of rapid detection of NO 2, and the synthesis method of this material can also meet large-scale production.

Abstract:To improve the NO2-sensing performance of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-based sensors, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoclusters (NCs) were functionalized by a microwave (MW)-assisted synthesis technique. Gas sensors based on pristine SWCNTs and ZnO NC-SWCNT composites synthesized using different weight ratios (ZnO/SWCNTs = 0.5:1, 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1) were fabricated, and their ability to sense various gases at room temperature (25 °C) was investigated. The results showed that the sensing performance of the ZnO NC-SWCNT composite synthesized with a weight ratio of 1:1 (denoted as Z-SWCNTs) was significantly enhanced with respect to NO2 response and selectivity. This enhanced sensing performance is thought to be a result of both the modulation of the conduction channel at the ZnO NC-SWCNT heterointerfaces and the generation of defects (or holes) by MW irradiation that act as active sites for the target gases. The results obtained in this work provide not only a facile method of cofunctionalizing oxide NCs and defects but also a new methodology for improving the sensing capabilities of SWCNT-based gas sensors.

Abstract:With the continuous industrialization, as one of the most common air pollutants found in fossil fuels and automobile exhausts, nitride oxide (NO2) monitor is very essential for ensuring good air quality and our body health. 2D materials attract more attention for its special surface and electron structures. MoS2 shows small gas sensing response for its less surface dangling bonds. Here, we introduce a facile method to modify MoS2 with SnO2 as a NO2 receptor via mechanical composite. The MoS2 nanoflowers prepared with a hydrothermal method depicted a high surface/volume ratio and the SnO2 fabricated using a solvothermal method. Mixing ratio and annealing temperature was systematic researched for screening optimal parameters for gas sensor fabrication. The response was enhanced 1.5 time after modification with fast response and recovery time. The p-n heterostructure also provide good selectivity towards NO2 for gas sensing. This work provides a facile alternative for fast and stable response NO2 gas sensor at room temperature.

Abstract:In this work, fabrication of Cu2O@Cu1.75S core‐shell octahedrons was achieved through a facile water bath stirring process. Compared with pure Cu2O, the composite showed enhanced sensing performance for NO2. The response value of Cu2O@Cu1.75S to 5 ppm NO2 at 40 °C is seven times that of Cu2O to 5 ppm NO2 at 75 °C. Moreover, Cu2O@Cu1.75S has the ability to detect 100 ppb NO2 and has good NO2 sensing selectivity and long‐term stability. This study shows that Cu2O@Cu1.75S hybrid is a type of outstanding NO2 gas sensing material on account of its low working temperature and high sensing sensitivity.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors are pivotal in upholding environmental integrity and human health, necessitating heightened sensitivity and exceptional selectivity. Despite the prevalent use of metal oxide semiconductors (MOSs) for NO2 detection, extant solutions exhibit shortcomings in meeting practical application criteria, specifically in response, selectivity, and operational temperatures. Here, we successfully employed a facile microwave-solvothermal method to synthesize a mesoporous CeO2/CNCs nanocomposite. This methodology entails the rapid and comprehensive dispersion of CeO2 nanoparticles onto helical carbon nanocoils (CNCs), resulting in augmented electronic conductivity and an abundance of active sites within the composite. Consequently, the gas-sensing sensitivity of the nanocomposite at room temperature experienced a notable enhancement. Moreover, the presence of cerium oxide and the conversion of Ce3+ and Ce4+ ions facilitated the generation of oxygen vacancies in the composites, thereby further amplifying the sensing performance. Experimental outcomes demonstrate that the nanocomposite exhibited an approximate 9-fold increase in response to 50 ppm NO2 in comparison to pure CNCs at room temperature. Additionally, the CeO2/CNCs sensor displayed remarkable selectivity towards NO2 when exposed to gases such as NH3, CO, SO2, CO2, and C2H5OH. This straightforward microwave-solvothermal method presents an appealing strategy for the research and development of intelligent sensors based on CNCs nanomaterials.

Abstract:In this work, the hierarchical WO3 hollow microspheres were synthesized through a facile one-step solvothermal method followed by the subsequent thermal treatment. The crystal structure, morphology and microstructure were characterized by various techniques. The sensors fabricated with this WO3 hollow microspheres exhibited ultrahigh response of 380 toward 5 ppm NO under 150 degrees C, and it also showed high selectivity, reliable repeatability and quick response/recovery characteristics. The excellent NO gas sensing properties is mainly owing to the hierarchical hollow microspheres structure with high specific surface area and effective gas diffusion ability.

Abstract:The MoS2/ZnO nanostructures with MoS2 thickness of ∼100 nm showed a maximum response of 31.2% to 50 ppm NO2 at the optimist temperature. The synthesized MoS2/ZnONWs nanostructures also exhibited excellent sensitivity, recovery, repeatability, selectivity and with relatively low working temperatures, with a low detection concentration of 200 ppb.
Pompon-like Ni doped ZnO mesoporous microspheres for conductometric NO 2 sensing properties at room temperature

Abstract:Rapid detection of NO 2 at room temperature plays a significant role in industrial production and daily life. Herein, the hierarchical pompon-like Ni doped ZnO (Ni-ZnO) mesoporous microspheres composed of abundant porous nanosheets were prepared by a facile solvothermal method. For Ni-ZnO composites based sensors, Ni doping not only reduced their working temperature but also enhanced their sensitivity. The test results suggested that the Ni-ZnO-0.03 based sensor showed outstanding gas-sensing properties toward 20 ppm NO 2 at 25 °C, such as high response (264), speedy response-recovery time (35, 93 s), excellent selectivity and long-term stability. Moreover, the sensor also possessed a low theoretical detection limit of 9 ppb toward NO 2 at 25 °C. The superior NO 2 sensing properties of Ni-ZnO nanostructure composites could owe to the hierarchical and mesoporous structure, high specific surface area as well as increased oxygen vacancies.

Pd@Pt Core-Shell Nanocrystal-Decorated ZnO Nanosheets for ppt-Level NO2 Detection

Abstract:Bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) have obtained significant attention due to their unique advantages of the intrinsic properties of individual metals and synergistic enhancements resulting from the electronic coupling between two constituent metals. In this work, Pd@Pt core-shell NCs were prepared through a facile one-pot solution-phase method, which had excellent dispersion and uniform size. Concurrently, ZnO nanosheets were prepared via a hydrothermal method. To explore their potential in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensing applications, sensitive materials based on ZnO nanosheets with varying mass percentages of Pd@Pt NCs were generated through an impregnation process. The sensor based on 0.3 wt % Pd@Pt-ZnO exhibited remarkable performance, demonstrating a substantial response (Rg/Ra = 60.3) to 50 ppb of NO2 at a low operating temperature of 80 °C. Notably, this sensor reached an outstanding low detection limit of 300 ppt. The enhancement in gas sensing capabilities can be attributed to the sensitization and synergistic effects imparted by the exceptional catalytic activity of Pd@Pt NCs, which significantly promoted the reaction. This research introduces a novel approach for the utilization of core-shell structured bimetallic nanocrystals as modifiers in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) materials for NO2 detection.

Abstract:A facile solvothermal method has been employed to fabricate ZnCo zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF) nanoparticles intercalated graphene nanosheet (ZnCo-ZIF/GN), in which ZnCo-ZIF nanoparticles are uniformly distributed. The optimized ZnCo-ZIF/GN-120 sensor has a highly sensitive response of 54.61 for 100 ppm of NO2, and the detection limit reaches 10 ppb at room temperature (rt, 22 °C; relative humidity, 30%). The ZnCo-ZIF/GN-120 sensor is shown to have good selectivity, excellent stability, and repeatability for NO2 detection. Fabrication of Large-Area Au Nanoparticle Decorated ZnO@ZIF-8 Core-Shell Heterostructure Nanorods for Ppb-Level NO2 Gas Sensing at Room Temperature

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks based heterostructures have gained wide attention recently for various applications. Specifically metal oxide and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanocomposites have been synthesized for gas sensing with reasonable performance. In this work, large-area Au nanoparticle (NP) decorated ZnO@ZIF-8 core-shell heterostructure nanorods (NRs) are synthesized for ppb-level UV-activated NO2 sensing at room temperature. Large-area ZnO NRs are first grown and ZIF-8 shells are subsequently formed on ZnO with the result of various types of ZnO@ZIF-8 NRs. The ZnO@3ZIF-8 NRs have the highest response and Au NPs are finally decorated on the NR surfaces. The ZnO@3ZIF-8/Au sensor shows high responses of 260% and 34700% toward 0.05 and 3.75 ppm NO2 gas, respectively. An excellent linear sensitivity of 95.1 ppm-1 has been achieved and the estimated lowest detection limit is 0.3 ppb. It is noteworthy that the linear dynamic range is extended by at least 8 times after ZIF-8 addition and the sensitivity is enhanced by 12 times after Au NP decoration. The sensor is also highly NO2 selective against other gases including NO, NH3, SO2, CO, CH3OH, CH2O, C2H5OH, and C3H6O. The excellent performance of the ZnO@3ZIF-8/Au sensor shows good potential for environmental NO2 sensing.

Abstract:Recently, In2O3 nanowires (NWs) have been extensively explored for high performance electronics and optoelectronics; meanwhile, it is still challenging to synthesize single-crystalline In2O3 NWs at low temperature using complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology compatible catalysts. In this study, single-crystalline As-doped In2O3 NWs are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), using InAs as the In source and Cu2O nanocubes with uniform morphology as the CMOS compatible catalyst seeds. The growth temperature is optimized to be ∼600 °C, far lower than the melting point (827 °C) of the Cu3As seeds inferring the vapor–solid–solid (VSS) growth mechanism. The obtained NWs have a narrow diameter distribution of 72 ± 18 nm along the entire NW length and a preferential growth direction of ⟨100⟩ attributable to the epitaxy relationship with the Cu3As ⟨110⟩ plane. NO2 gas sensing measurements show the diameter dependent response, attributable to the increased surface to volume ratio of small diameter NWs. All of these have shown that the outstanding potency of such NWs is based on Cu2O nanocubes for diverse technological applications.
