Abstract:Herein we describe the mechanism of crystallization of Al3+ with amorphous TiO2 on a TiO2 film, and found that the resultant Al2TiO5 was able to improve the average efficiency of planar perovskite solar cells ( PSCs) from 15.4 to 17.2%. The electron lifetime in these Al-PSCs was about 3 times longer than that in unmodified PSCs. The O 1s X-ray photoelectron spectrum of the TiO2/CH3NH3PbI3 interface indicated that the oxygen vacancy or defect peak decreased by more than 31% on modifying the interface with Al2TiO5. The stability of the PSCs was improved substantially: Al-PSCs had still 88% of their initial value after 1440 hours, while the efficiency of the reference PSCs decreased to 68% of their initial value.
Charge transfer enhancement of TiO2/perovskite interface in perovskite solar cells

Abstract:In the conventional perovskite solar cells (PSCs) structure, TiO2 is the most commonly used electron transport layer (ETL) as it has good energy-level matching with perovskite layer. However, oxygen vacancy defects will appear when TiO2 is exposed to ultraviolet light for a long time, which would reduce its carrier extraction ability. Here, we report a simple and effective interface engineering method for TiO2 ETL to achieve a highly efficient PSCs. An ultra-thin [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) layer is used to modify the mesoporous TiO2/perovskite layer interface. The PCBM effectively passivates defects on the TiO2 surface, promotes the extraction of electrons, and improves the quality of the perovskite film. Finally, a high efficiency of 16.4% was achieved for the modified device, much higher than 13.5% of the reference devices. After storing for 12 days in an atmosphere with an air humidity of 30 ± 5%, the efficiency of the PSCs maintains more than 60% of its initial level. This strategy is beneficial to enhance the efficiency and working stability of PSCs.

Abstract:There are numerous defect states in the anatase TiO2 nanoparticles, which are most frequently used as the electron transporting layers in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), resulting in severe charge recombination and poor electron extracted efficiency. Herein, we report a simple and practical way to passivate the surface defects of TiO2 by hydrothermal treating with acetic acid and H2SO4. Modified TiO2 with a high percentage of {101} facets and sulfonic acid functional group is proved to be beneficial for the growth and crystallization of FAMA perovskite film. Furthermore, it can facilitate the electron extraction and inhibit the charge recombination at the perovskite-TiO2 interface. A high PCE of 20.27% has been achieved in our modified TiO2-based PSCs, which is 30% higher than that of control devices under the same condition. Simultaneously, the solar cells display negligible hysteresis, improved device reproducibility and stability. This work provides an efficient approach to engineer the electron transport pathway at perovskite-TiO2 interface.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have experienced outstanding advances in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) by employing new electron transport layers (ETLs), interface engineering, optimizing perovskite morphology, and improving charge collection efficiency. In this work, we study the role of a new ultrathin interface layer of titanium nitride (TiN) conformally deposited on a mesoporous TiO2 (mp-TiO2) scaffold using the atomic layer deposition method. Our characterization results revealed that the presence of TiN at the ETL/perovskite interface improves the charge collection as well as reduces the interface recombination. We find that the morphology (grain size) and optical properties of the perovskite film deposited on the optimized mp-TiO2/TiN ETL are improved drastically, leading to devices with a maximum PCE of 19.38% and a high open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 1.148 V with negligible hysteresis and improved environmental (∼40% RH) and thermal (80 °C) stabilities.

Abstract:In article no. 1800167, Xinhua Li, Jianming Dai, Zhengguo Xiao, and co-workers use an ultra-thin Ti as a cathode interlayer, without using any organic or inorganic electron transport layers, to improve the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. Ti forms a bonding layer with nitrogen atoms in metylammonium anions at the perovskite/Ti interface, which passivates surface defects and suppresses surface decomposition of the perovskite film. A power conversion efficiency of 18.1% is achieved. Furthermore, Ti has low diffusivity and prevents the diffusion of the cathode metal atoms into the perovskite layer, resulting in improved device stability.
Ultraviolet-ozone Modification on TiO2 Surface to Promote Both Efficiency and Stability of Low-Temperature Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:As a classical electron transport layer, the high crystallinity TiO2 has been widely used in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), however, its high-temperature preparation process elevates the fabrication cost and limits its application. Here, we report an ultraviolet-ozone assisted strategy to modify low-temperature TiO2 interface for PSCs. In addition to the more appropriate work function and reinforced built-in potential, the lattice strain of perovskite films crystallized on modified TiO2 has also been released in some degree. Ultrafast transient absorption technique is employed to provide a deep insight into the carrier dynamics, revealing that less non-radiative recombination exists in the modified device. Interestingly, transient surface photovoltage results demonstrate that ultraviolet-ozone modification can efficiently suppress the decomposition of perovskite films under light illumination. Taking advantage of these facts, this device exhibits better efficiency and remarkable stability. This demonstrated low-temperature strategy is a promising way for fabricating low-cost, efficient and stable perovskite device.
Efficient Planar Perovskite Solar Cells with Low-Temperature Atomic Layer Deposited TiO2 Electron Transport Layer and Interfacial Modifier

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted increasing attentions for their outstanding efficiency and simple fabrication process. However, the commonly used typical titanium dioxide (TiO2) electron transport layer (ETL) requires a high-temperature treatment to crystallize. In this work, the low-temperature (150 degrees C) atomic layer deposition (ALD) processed TiO2 ETL, and the SnO2/PCBM double interfacial modifier have been adopted to fabricate the high performance PSCs of ITO/ALD-TiO2/SnO2/PC61BM/MA(0.7)FA(0.3)PbI((3-x))Cl((x))/Spiro-OMeTAD/Ag. The measurement results show that the PSCs with ALD-TiO2 ETL obtain the higher champion PCE of 19.45% than that of PSC with solution-TiO2 ETLs (PCE = 18.64%), along with the obviously enhanced FF and V-OC, as well as the better light stability and repeatability. And the transient photocurrent and photovoltage results demonstrate that the performance improvement origins from the enhanced charge transport and suppressed charge recombination. Therefore, the low-temperature ALD-TiO2 ETL with suitable modification is a promising strategy to fabricate efficient PSCs and flexible devices.
Mitigated Front Contact Energy Barrier for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The large work function difference between indium tin oxide (ITO) and electron transporting layers (ETLs) in the n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs) usually causes a front contact energy barrier (Phi FC), which induces significant efficiency losses at the contacts. Here, we address this issue by developing a passivating contact structure with an atomic-layer-deposited aluminium oxide (Al2O3) interlayer between the ITO and ETL, where the positive fixed charges in the Al2O3 layers modulate Phi FC in the PSCs. It is clarified that the mitigated Phi FC modifies the charge carrier density distribution near the ETL/perovskite heterojunctions and therefore effectively reduces interface recombination losses in the device. As a result, the n-i-p champion PSC with Al2O3 shows an efficiency of up to 25.7% (certified efficiency 25.3%) with an improved photovoltage of 30 meV, in contrast to the control device. The deposited homogenous Al2O3 layer enables a 23.7% efficient 1-square-centimeter and a 21.7% efficient 4-square-centimeter n-i-p cell. In the meantime, the Al2O3 layer can block the migration of iodine ions in the perovskite layer into the ITO layers, which greatly improves the operational stability of the PSCs. A passivating contact structure was developed to mitigate the front contact energy barrier and hence reduce interface recombination losses in perovskite solar cells. This device structure achieved champion power conversion efficiencies of 25.7%.
Interfacial Crosslinking for Efficient and Stable Planar TiO2 Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The buried interface between the electron transport layer (ETL) and the perovskite layer plays a crucial role in enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of n-i-p type perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, the interface between the chemical bath deposited (CBD) titanium oxide (TiO2) ETL and the perovskite layer using multi-functional potassium trifluoromethyl sulfonate (SK) is modified. Structural and elemental analyses reveal that the trifluoromethyl sulfonate serves as a crosslinker between the TiO2 and the perovskite layer, thus improving the adhesion of the perovskite to the TiO2 ETL through strong bonding of the ─CF3 and ─SO3 - terminal groups. Furthermore, the multi-functional modifiers reduced interface defects and suppressed carrier recombination in the PSCs. Consequently, devices with a champion PCE of 25.22% and a fill factor (FF) close to 85% is achieved, marking the highest PCE and FF observed for PSCs based on CBD TiO2. The unencapsulated device maintained 81.3% of its initial PCE after operating for 1000 h.

Abstract:In this study, TiO 2 thin film is prepared between the aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) substrate and SnO 2 electron transfer layer by low temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD). Perovskite solar cell (PSC)is fabricated with the device of AZO/TiO 2 /SnO 2 /FA 0.7 MA 0.2 PbCs 0.1 Br 0.67 I 2.33 /Sprio-OMeTAD/Au. Results show that, with the introduction of TiO 2 thin film, the stacked electron transfer layer (TiO 2 /SnO 2 ) exhibits more better transmittance of light and charges extraction ability that lead to increase of the short circuit current density (J sc ).

Abstract:All-inorganic CsPbI3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are the focus of the photovoltaic field due to their great thermal stability and potential in tandem devices. However, the common titanium dioxide (TiO2) electron transport layer (ETL) is manufactured at high temperature and is challenging to regulate the thickness. Here, we propose a unique strategy to fabricate thin TiO2 at low temperatures using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and a low-concentration Titanium tetrachloride/isopropanol (TiCl4/IPA) solution method. The ultra-thin compact ALD-TiO2 (A-TiO2) is employed to minimize the leakage channels and suppress the recombination rate at the tips of rough fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates. Subsequently, the solution-TiO2 (S–TiO2) regulates the work function to improve the energy level alignment. The A-TiO2/S–TiO2 composite facilitates carrier charge extraction and transport at the interface between ETL and perovskite layer. As a result, the device-based A-TiO2/S–TiO2 ETL delivers a champion efficiency of 19.6% and outstanding stability under continuous illumination in ambient air. This study demonstrates a simple and cost-effective method for fabricating CsPbI3 PSC and promoting their potential for commercialization.

Abstract:The study of charge transfer in thin film solar cells made of several layers is of high importance since they may lose their energy via the recombination process at the interfaces, specifically at the interface of the electron transport layer (ETL) and perovskite. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is mostly used as an ETL in perovskite solar cells due to its many advantages. However, TiO2 has some disadvantages, such as low electron mobility compared to the perovskite layer and electron trap states on its top at the interface. These effects cause the accumulation of carriers at the ETL/perovskite interface then the non-radiative recombination will be enhanced, which is considered as one of the significant losses in the Perovskite Solar Cells (PSCs). In this work, a new technique is taken for more optimal ETL doping. We fabricated the ETL layers with graded doping of platinum quantum dots (Pt QDs), in which Pt QDs concentration is high at the ETL/Perovskite interface and zero at the FTO/ETL interface. This strategy not only suppresses the recombination at the ETL/perovskite interface and subsequently enhances the device efficiency from 12.92 to 14.36% but also improves the stability of the PSCs.

Abstract:Titanium oxide (TiO2) is commonly used as an electron transport layer (ETL) of regular-structure perovskite solar cells (PSCs); however, it suffers from inherent drawbacks such as low electron mobility and a high density of trap states. Modifying the surface chemistry of TiO2 has proved facile and efficient in enhancing key electron-transport properties, thereby improving device performance. In this review, we summarize recent progress on the surface modification of TiO2 in planar PSCs. The functions of different modifiers in improving device performance are elucidated, revealing the influence of modifier chemical and electronic structure on the properties of TiO2. This offers new opportunities to exploit novel materials for modifying TiO2 toward high-efficiency PSCs.
Two birds with one stone: SmCl3 modified TiO2/perovskite interface to enhance the performance of carbon-based perovskite solar cell

Abstract:Carbon-based organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (C-PSCs) are low-cost photovoltaic cells. However, the carrier recombination caused by interface defects and the mismatched interface energy level limits the further improvement of the efficiency of C-PSCs. In this work, SmCl 3 was introduced as a "double-sided" modifier to achieve interfacial modification. After modified, Cl − passivated the oxygen vacancy defects on the TiO 2 surface. Meanwhile, Sm 3+ was diffused into the perovskite interface in the form of a concentration gradient, which balanced the non-coordinated Pb 2+ and improved the energy level arrangement. Due to good interfacial contact, the reduced interfacial non-radiative recombination, and rapid charge extraction and transport, the optimized C-PSCs efficiency was increased from 11.03 to 13.4%. In addition, the unencapsulated champion PSC remained stable for long-term stability after the sustained attack for 800 h at room temperature of 20% RH. This work proposed a straightforward interface modification strategy to improve the efficiency of C-PSCs.

Abstract:The film quality of the electron transport layer (ETL) plays an important role in improving the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In order to reduce the effect of rough fluorine-doped SnO2 (FTO)substrate on the film quality of the TiO2 ETL, multiple cycles of spin-coating were employed to realize optimized TiO2 film and improve the performance of PSCs with rough FTO. The results show that TiO2 ETL was optimized most effectively using two spin-coating cycles, obtaining the best performance of PSCs with rough FTO. The carbon electrode-based PSCs were then demonstrated. Our work discusses the feasibility of low-quality rough FTO for the fabrication of PSCs and photodetectors to reduce costs.

Abstract:Here, we demonstrate an effective low-temperature approach to fabricate a uniform and pinhole-free compact TiO2 layer for enhancing photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells. TiCl4 was used to modify TiO2 for efficient charge generation and significantly reduced recombination loss. We found that a TiO2 layer with an appropriate TiCl4 treatment possesses a smooth surface with full coverage of the conductive electrode. Further studies on charge carrier dynamics confirmed that the TiCl4 treatment improves the contact of the TiO2/perovskite interface, facilitating charge extraction and suppressing charge recombination. On the basis of the treatment, we improved the open circuit voltage from 1.01 V of the reference cell to 1.08 V, and achieved a power conversion efficiency of 16.4%.
Dual Interfacial Modification Engineering with 2D MXene Quantum Dots and Copper Sulphide Nanocrystals Enabled High‐Performance Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) strongly depends on the electron transport layer (ETL), perovskite absorber, hole transport layer (HTL), and their interfaces. Herein, the first approach to utilize ultrathin 2D titanium‐carbide MXenes (Ti3C2Tx quantum dots, TQD) by engineering the perovskite/TiO2 ETL interface and perovskite absorber and introducing Cu1.8S nanocrystals to perfect the Spiro‐OMeTAD HTL is represented. A significant hysteresis‐free power conversion efficiency improvement from 18.31% to 21.64% of PSCs is achieved after modifications with the enhanced short‐circuit current density, open‐circuit voltages, and fill factor. Various advanced characterizations, including femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, elucidate that the TQD/Cu1.8S significantly contribute to the improved crystalline quality of the perovskite film with its large grain size and improved electron/holes extraction efficiencies at perovskite/ETL and perovskite/HTL interfaces. Furthermore, the long‐time ambient and light stability of PSCs are largely boosted through the TQD and/or Cu1.8S nanocrystals doping, originating from the better crystallization of perovskite, suppressing the film aggregation and crystallization of HTL, and inhibiting the ultraviolet‐induced photocatalysis of the ETL. The findings highlight the TQD and Cu1.8S can act as a superfast electrons and holes tunnel for the optoelectronic devices.

In Situ Surface Fluorination of TiO 2 Nanocrystals Reinforces Interface Binding of Perovskite Layer for Highly Efficient Solar Cells with Dramatically Enhanced Ultraviolet‐Light Stability

Abstract:Low‐temperature solution‐processed TiO2 nanocrystals (LT‐TiO2) have been extensively applied as electron transport layer (ETL) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the low electron mobility, high density of electronic trap states, and considerable photocatalytic activity of TiO2 result in undesirable charge recombination at the ETL/perovskite interface and notorious instability of PSCs under ultraviolet (UV) light. Herein, LT‐TiO2 nanocrystals are in situ fluorinated via a simple nonhydrolytic method, affording formation of Ti─F bonds, and consequently increase electron mobility, decrease density of electronic trap states, and inhibit photocatalytic activity. Upon applying fluorinated TiO2 nanocrystals (F‐TiO2) as ETL, regular‐structure planar heterojunction PSC (PHJ‐PSC) achieves a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.68%, which is among the highest PCEs for PHJ‐PSCs based on LT‐TiO2 ETLs. Flexible PHJ‐PSC devices based on F‐TiO2 ETL exhibit the best PCE of 18.26%, which is the highest value for TiO2‐based flexible devices. The bonded F atoms on the surface of TiO2 promote the formation of Pb─F bonds and hydrogen bonds between F− and FA/MA organic cations, reinforcing interface binding of perovskite layer with TiO2 ETL. This contributes to effective passivation of the surface trap states of perovskite film, resulting in enhancements of device efficiency and stability especially under UV light.

Abstract:Abstract Atomic layer deposition (ALD) growth of conformal thin SnO x films on perovskite absorbers offers a promising method to improve carrier‐selective contacts, enable sputter processing, and prevent humidity ingress toward high‐performance tandem perovskite solar cells. However, the interaction between perovskite materials and reactive ALD precursor limits the process parameters of ALD‐SnO x film and requires an additional fullerene layer. Here, it demonstrates that reducing the water dose to deposit SnO x can reduce the degradation effect upon the perovskite underlayer while increasing the water dose to promote the oxidization can improve the electrical properties. Accordingly, a SnO x buffer layer with a gradient composition structure is designed, in which the compositionally varying are achieved by gradually increasing the oxygen source during the vapor deposition from the bottom to the top layer. In addition, the gradient SnO x structure with favorable energy funnels significantly enhances carrier extraction, further minimizing its dependence on the fullerene layer. Its broad applicability for different perovskite compositions and various textured morphology is demonstrated. Notably, the design boosts the efficiencies of perovskite/silicon tandem cells (1.0 cm 2 ) on industrially textured Czochralski (CZ) silicon to a certified efficiency of 28.0%.
