Abstract:Diesel engines are important for heavy-duty vehicles. However, particulate matter (PM) released from diesel exhaust should be eliminated. Nowadays, catalytic diesel particulate filters (CDPF) are recognized as a promising technology. In this work, a series of monolith Mn1−nKnCo2O4 catalysts were prepared by the simple citric acid method. The as-prepared catalysts displayed good catalytic performance for soot combustion and the Mn0.7K0.3Co2O4 catalyst gave the best catalytic performance among all the prepared samples. The T10 and Tm of Mn0.7K0.3Co2O4-HC catalyst for soot combustion are 310 and 439 °C, respectively. The physical and chemical properties of catalysts were characterized by means of SEM, XPS, H2-TPR, Raman and other techniques. The characterization results indicate that K substitution is favorable for the formation of oxygen vacancies, enhancing the mobility of active oxygen species, and improving the redox properties and so on. In-situ Raman results prove that the strength of Co-O bonds in the catalysts became weak during the reaction at high temperatures. In addition, SEM and ultrasonic test results show that the peeling rate of the coat-layer is less than 5%. The as-prepared catalysts can be taken as one kind of candidate catalyst for promising application in soot combustion because of its facile synthesis, low cost and high catalytic activity.

Abstract:Abstract The soot emitted during the operation of diesel engine exhaust seriously threatens the human health and environment, so treating diesel engine exhaust is critical. At present, the most effective method for eliminating soot particles is post‐treatment technology. Preparation of economically viable and highly active soot combustion catalysts is a pivotal element of post‐treatment technology. In this study, different single‐metal oxide catalysts with fibrous structures and alkali metal‐modified hollow nanotubular Mn‐based oxide catalysts were synthesized using centrifugal spinning method. Activity evaluation results showed that the manganese oxide catalyst has the best catalytic activity among the prepared single‐metal oxide catalysts. Further research on alkali metal modification showed that doping alkali metals is beneficial for improving the oxidation state of manganese and generating a large number of reactive oxygen species. Combined with the structural effect brought by the hollow nanotube structure, the alkali metal‐modified Mn‐based oxide catalysts exhibit superior catalytic performance. Among them, the Cs‐modified Mn‐based oxide catalyst exhibits the best catalytic performance because of its rich active oxygen species, excellent NO oxidation ability, abundant Mn 4+ ions (Mn 4+ /Mn n+ = 64.78%), and good redox ability. The T 10 , T 50 , T 90 , and CO 2 selectivity of the Cs‐modified Mn‐based oxide catalyst were 267°C, 324°C, 360°C, and 97.8%, respectively.

Abstract:soot particles released from diesel engines have resulted in significant environmental pollution and have been widely recognized as an important factor for haze weather conditions. Soot emissions can be effectively mitigated using catalytic purification technologies, which necessitate the development of high-efficiency catalysts. Co3O4 catalysts with flower-, rod-, urchin-, sheet-, and cube-like morphologies were prepared via the hydrothermal method and were analyzed using characterization methods including XRD, SEM, and H2-TPR. Compared to the other synthesized catalysts, the urchin-like (Co3O4-U) catalyst exhibited better redox ability, stronger oxygen adsorption and activation ability, and the ability to convert NO into NO2. Therefore, the Co3O4-U catalyst displayed the best catalytic activity for soot combustion, with T10, T50, and T90 values of 274 °C, 327 °C, and 359 °C, respectively. Moreover, based on the characterization and catalytic performance results, the reaction mechanisms for Co3O4-U catalyst were proposed. The Co3O4-U catalyst possesses advantages such as simple preparation process, economic feasibility, and excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:Removal of soot particles by highly efficient catalysts is a research hotspot, not only because the problem of air pollution, but also because the complexity of the catalytic process that involves gas-solid-solid three-phase reaction. We synthesized single atom Ce and CeO2 nanoparticles simultaneously modified layered Na2Mn3O7 catalysts for soot combustion with unprecedented catalytic performance and high resistance to water and sulfur, using low-cost raw materials and a simple preparation protocol. The synergy between the easily available adsorbed and surface reactive oxygen species and the high yield of NO2 exploitation, leads to the beneficial transition of soot combustion process from “gas-solid-solid” into “gas-gas-solid”, thereby, shifted to low temperatures. Our findings provide a pathway to the development of cheap catalysts based on transition metal oxides, avoiding application of noble metals for successful elimination of diesel exhausts at remarkably low temperatures.

Abstract:With the increasing stringency of environmental protection regulations, reducing the severe pollution caused by soot particles from diesel vehicle exhaust has become a widespread concern. Catalytic purification technology is currently an efficient method for eliminating soot particles, which needs to develop high-activity catalysts. This work uses a two-step hydrothermal method to synthesize MnOx/CeO2 nanosphere catalysts, which have synergistic effects between manganese and cerium, and have high reactive oxygen species. Among them, the MnCe-1:4 catalyst represents the optimal catalytic activity, and the values of T10, T50, and T90 are 289, 340, and 373 °C, respectively. On account of their simple synthetic procedure and low cost, the prepared MnOx/CeO2 nanosphere catalysts have good prospects for practical applications.

Abstract:The control of soot emission from diesel vehicles is of extraordinary importance to the environment, and catalytic removal of soot is a highly effective and clean method. Here, we report a novel, non-noble metal catalyst for application in the catalytic combustion of soot with superb activity and resistance to H2O and SO2. MnOx oxide was prepared via a hydrothermal method, and then, Cs and Co were loaded on MnOx by impregnation. The 5%Cs/1%Co/MnOx catalyst displayed excellent catalytic activity with values of T10 (332 °C), T50 (371 °C), and T90 (415 °C) under loose contact. The as-prepared catalysts were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), O2 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). The results suggest that, after the introduction of Cs and Co into the MnOx oxide, more NO2 molecules take part in soot oxidation, exhibiting higher NO2 utilization efficiency; this is due to the synergistic effects of multiple components (Cs, Co, and Mn) promoting the generation of more surface-active oxygen and then accelerating the reaction between NO2 and soot. Abstract:The performance of catalysts used in after-treatment systems is the key factor for the removal of diesel soot, which is an important component of atmospheric fine particle emissions. Herein, three-dimensionally ordered macroporous-mesoporous TixSi1-xO2 (3DOM-m TixSi1-xO2) and its supported MnOx catalysts doped with different alkali/alkaline-earth metals (AMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 (A: Li, Na, K, Ru, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba)) were prepared by mesoporous template (P123)-assisted colloidal crystal template (CCT) and incipient wetness impregnation methods, respectively. Physicochemical characterizations of the catalysts were performed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, O2 temperature-programmed desorption, NO temperature-programmed oxidation, and Raman spectroscopy techniques; then, we evaluated their catalytic performances for the removal of diesel soot particles. The results show that the 3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 supports exhibited a well-defined 3DOM-m nanostructure, and AMnOx nanoparticles with 10-50 nm were evenly dispersed on the inner walls of the uniform macropores. In addition, the as-prepared catalysts exhibited good catalytic performance for soot combustion. Among the prepared catalysts, CsMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 had the highest catalytic activity for soot combustion, with T10, T50, and T90 (the temperatures corresponding to soot conversion rates of 10%, 50%, and 90%) values of 285, 355, and 393°C, respectively. The high catalytic activity of the CsMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 catalysts was attributed to their excellent low-temperature reducibility and homogeneous macroporous-mesoporous structure, as well as to the synergistic effects between Cs and Mn species and between CsMnOx and the Ti0.7Si0.3O2 support.

Abstract:Soot particles are recognized as one of the main sources of air pollution; therefore, it is an urgent need to eliminate them from the air effectively. Catalytic combustion is a promising strategy for soot abatement, yet the development of highly efficient catalysts is still an important challenge for practical applications. In this study, novel hierarchical porous K-OMS-2/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 catalysts, in which the Ti0.7Si0.3O2 supports contain ordered macropores and mesopores and the K-OMS-2 active phase contains micropores, were purposefully designed and successfully prepared using a simple method. The macropores and mesopores in the as-prepared catalysts were formed by PMMA and P123 as templates, and the micropores were brought about by K-OMS-2, a specific crystal form of cryptomelane. The K-OMS-2/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 catalysts exhibit high catalytic activity for soot combustion, along with high stability and good resistance to sulfur and water. Among the synthesized catalysts, K-OMS-2/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2-450 shows the highest catalytic activity with T10, T50, and T90 values of 288, 333, and 364 °C, respectively. This catalyst also exhibits good stability after five catalytic cycles with T10, T50, and T90 values in the range of 290 ± 4, 335 ± 4, and 368 ± 4 °C, respectively. The excellent catalytic performance in soot combustion associated with high NO oxidation activity is attributed to the hierarchical pore effect, a synergistic effect between K and Mn, as well as to doping with Ti. Molecular density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamic modeling indicated that both Langmuir–Hinshelwood and Eley–Rideal mechanisms may operate in the NO to NO2 oxidation on the K-OSM-2 surface, yet the former is energetically slightly more preferred. Abstract:Diesel engine exhaust comprises nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and soot particles, which cause serious air pollution. However, owing to the contradictory nature of NO x reduction and soot oxidation, a trade-off exists in the simultaneous removal of NO x and soot. Consequently, catalytic technology has become a hot research topic. This study prepared MO δ /Fe-Beta (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu) catalysts through incipient wetness impregnation using Fe-Beta as the support and explored the catalytic performance of the above catalysts. The results exhibited the good performance of the prepared catalysts. The introduction of Mn resulted in a lower peak temperature of soot combustion for the catalyst, and slightly decreased deNO x performance of Fe-Beta. The soot combustion temperature was as low as 422 °C, and the temperature window for 80% NO conversion was 164–423 °C. The interaction between MnO δ and zeolite can regulate the acid sites and produce sufficient active oxygen species for the catalyst. The catalytic activity of the MnO δ /Fe-Beta catalyst is due to its strong redox property, appropriate number of acid sites and sufficient number of active oxygen species. In addition, the catalyst had good stability and water and sulfur resistance, therefore it had great potential for future application in simultaneous removal of NO x and soot from diesel engine exhaust. A Comparative Study on Ce–Pr and Ce–Mn Mixed Oxide Catalysts Toward Soot Catalytic Combustion

Abstract:CePr and CeMn mixed oxide catalysts were synthesized by inserting Pr and Mn atoms into CeO2. Catalytic performance on soot combustion was investigated, and several characterizations were carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, H-2 temperature-programmed reduction, and X-ray diffraction. Results show that a cubic fluorite structure solid solution can be formed with Pr and Mn doped into CeO2 lattice. Three oxygen species, namely, lattice oxygen O-I (O2-), defect oxygen species O-II (O-2(-), O-2(2-), and O-), and hydroxyl-like groups and adsorbed molecular water O-III, exist in the solid solution structure. In general, the defect oxygen species O-II is responsible for soot combustion. CePr exhibits fast oxidation rate because of the presence of open oxygen migration channel (O-I <-> O-II <-> O-III), and reactive oxygen species O-II can continue to be replenished. CeMn possesses a large amount of surface active oxygen, which results in excellent low-temperature catalytic activity.

Abstract:A series of manganese-based oxide catalysts were synthesized by the hydrothermal method. By adjusting the doping amounts of W and Cu in the system to study the catalytic performance of transition metal-doped manganese oxides on soot combustion. They were deeply studied through various characterizations and theoretical calculations. The results show that W and Cu doping modifications can significantly improve the activity of manganese-based oxides in soot oxidation. W-Cu 0.1 /MnO x prepared by co-modification of W and Cu at 395 °C can convert 90% of soot into CO 2 . The multiple characterization results show that by adjusting the doping amount of copper and tungsten, the nano-flower-like morphology can be obtained and the crystal plane can be reconstructed, which is helpful to increase the specific surface area, Mn 3+ content, and oxygen vacancy content. The theoretical calculation results show that the oxygen vacancy on the surface of the catalyst shows the ability to activate O 2 and H 2 O, and they show non-competitive adsorption. In addition, W-Cu 0.1 /MnO x has a good application prospect in the catalytic oxidation of soot because of its excellent catalytic stability. This work provides a reference for the design and preparation of non-noble metal-based catalysts for the elimination of soot particles from diesel engine exhaust.

Abstract:γ-MnO2, SmMnO3, and γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 catalysts were prepared by facile methods, wherein the SmMnO3 (SMO) perovskite was synthesized through one-step calcination and the γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 was formed by an in situ growth of γ-MnO2 on the surface of SMO. These materials ware characterized by XRD, SEM-mapping, N2-adsorption, XPS and H2-TPR to investigate their textural properties. Compared with that of SMO and γ-MnO2, the γ-MnO2/SMO shows better performance for catalytic oxidation of aromatic VOCs in wet air (10 vol.%), which may be attributed to its higher surface molar ratio of lattice oxygen to adsorbed oxygen (Olatt/Oads) and better low-temperature reducibility. Besides, for γ-MnO2/SMO catalyst, a successive oxidation route and the inner principle of BETX (benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and o-xylene) oxidation were also revealed via various tests and a comprehension of dynamics investigation. Meanwhile, the experiments under simulated realistic exhaust conditions displayed that the γ-MnO2/SmMnO3 is also a good catalyst with high stability for aromatic VOCs oxidation, and fulfilled endurability to high humidity (20 vol.%).

Abstract:Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) SiO2 was synthesized by a colloidal crystal template (CCT) method, and 3DOM SiO2-supported transition metal oxides catalysts were prepared by a facile incipient-wetness impregnation method. The as-prepared catalysts show well-defined three-dimensionally ordered macroporous structures. The transition metal oxides formed different sizes of nanoparticles and loaded onto 3DOM SiO2. The as-prepared catalysts show high catalytic activities for soot combustion. Among the studied catalysts, the 3DOM MnOx/SiO2 catalyst (molar ratio of Mn to Si is 1:4) shows the highest catalytic activity among the studied catalysts, e.g. T10, T50 and T90 are 297, 355 and 393 °C, respectively, and SmCO2 is 95.5%. The catalytic performances of 3DOM SiO2-supported transition metal oxide catalysts are mainly controlled by three factors: the macroporous effects of the 3DOM structure, the redox properties of transition metal oxides and the sizes of transition metal oxide NPs. 3DOM SiO2-supported transition metal oxide catalysts are promising for practical applications in soot combustion owing to high activity and low cost.

Abstract:The mullite SmMn2O5 (SMO) was modified with silver for soot oxidation by two methods, i.e. sol-gel (Ag/SMO-sg) and impregnation (Ag/SMO-im). The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), H2-O2 titration, H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO temperature-programmed reduction (CO-TPR), soot temperature-programmed reduction (soot-TPR), O2 temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD), cycled H2 temperature-programmed reduction (cycled H2-TPR), NO temperature-programmed oxidation (NO-TPO) and soot temperature-programmed oxidation (soot-TPO). Metallic silver nanoparticles were observed in the mullite matrix for both the catalysts. For Ag/SMO-sg, the possible incorporation of silver into the mullite crystal cell and strong electronic interaction between the highly dispersed metal and the support increase the Mn4+/Mn3+ ratio and create more structural defects in the mullite, resulting in boosted NO oxidation and thereby NO2-assisted soot combustion. The introduction of Ag can promote the generation/regeneration of active oxygen, which accelerates the ignition of soot in O2 at low temperatures. Therefore, the sol-gel-synthesized Ag/SmMn2O5 is highly promising for application in diesel particulate filters.

Abstract:A hierarchically porous zeolite beta has been designed via a facile combined surfactant-assisted hydrothermal treatment and subsequent alkali etching approach. High contents of the Cu and Mn species were then highly dispersed into the as-synthesized hierarchically porous zeolite beta. The prepared composite catalyst exhibits highly active, stable and recyclable catalytic performances for soot oxidation, and extraordinarily low T50 (260 °C) and T90 (300 °C) values can be achieved in the presence of NO. A synergetic catalytic effect between valence-varied active species Cun+ and Mnn+ has been proposed, which features the promoted generations of highly active oxygen species O−/O2− and active intermediate NO2. In addition, the obtained catalyst shows an excellent water resistance performance in soot oxidation due to the hydrophobic crystalline zeolite framework and the interaction between soot and water vapor.

Abstract:Elimination of soot particles from diesel exhaust remains one of the most pressing environmental issues. During the NOx-assisted soot catalytic oxidation process, it is proposed that the enhanced adsorption of NOx species (including NO and NO2) on the catalyst plays an important role in soot combustion. In this work, the 3DOM mullite catalysts with distinct NOx adsorption properties were designed, and the effect of NOx adsorption intensity on soot combustion behavior was investigated. It is proven that the soot combustion activity of 3DOM SmMn2O5 (SMO) catalyst was greatly improved when the adsorption of NOx on the catalyst was strengthened by the modification of K2Mn4O8 (KMO). Among all the as-prepared catalysts, the 5% KMO-SMO catalyst stands out with the best performance with the T-10, T-50, T-90 and S-CO2 of 299 degrees C, 336 degrees C, 383 degrees C and 99%, which represents one of the best catalysts for soot combustion application. Besides, our reaction mechanism analysis illustrates the importance of balancing the NOx adsorption and NO oxidation on modified SMO catalyst for NOx-assisted soot combustion reaction. Abstract:A series of flower-like CuxMnyCez mixed oxides catalysts for soot removal were prepared via a facile co-precipitation approach followed by calcination. The structural and surface properties of these catalysts were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, N-2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, oxygen temperature-programmed desorption and NO temperature-programmed oxidation. Superior soot oxidation performance was obtained over these ternary mixed oxides catalysts and the corresponding mechanism was explored. In particular, the Cu1Mn1Ce1 catalyst showed a remarkable improvement in soot oxidation activity in both NO + O-2 and O-2 atmospheres. The reusability and durability of these catalysts were assessed, and these materials showed high soot oxidation activity after the hydrothermal stability test.
One-Step Synthesis of Nanostructured Cu–Mn/TiO 2 via Flame Spray Pyrolysis: Application to Catalytic Combustion of CO and CH 4

Abstract:Catalytic combustion has been widely applied to remove the trace combustible pollutants. However, the earth-abundant and high-performance nanocatalysts are still the main research focus on promoting catalytic efficiency. Herein, the Cu and Mn mixed oxides supported on TiO2 nanoparticles with various Cu and Mn molar contents synthesized via the flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) technique are utilized in the catalytic oxidation of lean CO and CH4. Initially, the Cu–Mn/TiO2 nanocatalysts are composed of spherical structures with a diameter of about 20 nm, whose specific surface area is between 60 and 90 m2/g. The Cu element is more evenly distributed on the TiO2 surface than the Mn element, owing to the distinctly different ion radii. Both the copper and manganese cations could incorporate into the TiO2 lattice, which generates oxygen vacancies and enhances the diffusion of oxygen ions, causing the transformation of the antanse to rutile phase. When the molar content of the Cu–Mn increases to less than 30 mol %, the temperature of its reduction peak keeps decreasing due to the hydrogen spillover effect. Moreover, the catalytic performances of the Cu–Mn/TiO2 with 12 mol % loading (12CMT) are all optimal during the low-temperature and the high-temperature stages, which are superior to the FSP-made copper manganese or copper titanium oxides. This is attributed to the small crystal particles, highly dispersed active components of CuOx and MnOx, and the higher ratios of Cu1+/Cu and Mn4+–Oads Lewis acid–base pairs. In addition, the strong interaction between Cu–Mn components and rutile phase support can tremendously promote the activity of catalytic combustion. Under the simulated flue gas, the catalytic properties of 12CMT decreases in comparison with those of CO and CH4 mixed gas due to the introduction of CO2. Ultimately, the Cu–Mn/TiO2 samples exhibit the outstanding water resistance, thanks to the hydrophobization of the catalyst surface.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Increasing the contact efficiency and improving the intrinsic activity are two effective strategies to obtain efficient catalysts for soot combustion. Herein, the electrospinning method is used to synthesize fiber-like Ce-Mn oxide with a strong synergistic effect. The slow combustion of PVP in precursors and highly soluble manganese acetate in spinning solution facilitates the formation of fibrous Ce-Mn oxides. The fluid simulation clearly indicates that the slender and uniform fibers provide more interwoven macropores to capture soot particles than the cubes and spheres do. Accordingly, electrospun Ce-Mn oxide exhibits better catalytic activity than reference catalysts, including Ce-Mn oxides by co-precipitation and sol-gel methods. The characterizations suggest that Mn3+ substitution into fluorite-type CeO2 enhances the reducibility through the acceleration of Mn-Ce electron transfer, improves the lattice oxygen mobility by weakening the Ce-O bonds, and induces oxygen vacancies for the activation of O2. The theoretical calculation reveals that the release of lattice oxygen becomes easy because of a low formation energy of oxygen vacancy, while the high reduction potential is beneficial for the activation of O2 on Ce3+-Ov (oxygen vacancies). Due to above Ce-Mn synergy, the CeMnOx-ES shows more active oxygen species and higher oxygen storage capacity than CeO2-ES and MnOx-ES. The theoretical calculation and experimental results suggest that the adsorbed O2 is more active than lattice oxygen and the catalytic oxidation mainly follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism. This study indicates that electrospinning is a novel method to obtain efficient Ce-Mn oxide.
