Abstract:Motivated from increasing demands of non-contact optical temperature sensing, the Yb3+-Er3+ and Eu3+ doped NaY9Si6O26 (NYS) oxide phosphors were designed by high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase purity of the as-prepared samples was checked from XRD patterns. For the upconversion luminescence in NYS:Yb3+,Er3+, the optimal Er3+ doping content was determined to be 1 mol%, and the characteristic emission peaks of Er3+ were observed in the region of 500-700 nm. In Eu3+ activated NYS phosphors, it has been found that the emissions originating in 5D1 and 5D0 levels demonstrate different change tendencies in intensity with Eu3+ doping concentration. By studying the temperature-dependent luminescent spectra, it was indicated that the emissions intensities from different excited states of Er3+ change differently with temperature. Two kinds of fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) strategies were used in NYS:10%Yb3+,1%Er3+, containing thermally-coupled levels and non-thermally-coupled levels. In the NYS:3%Eu3+ phosphor, it was found that the FIR for 577 and 536 nm emissions follows a linear relation with temperature. The high sensitivities in the present phosphors indicate the potential application in optical temperature sensing.
Effects of Er3+ and Yb3+ Concentrations on Upconversion Luminescence and Thermal Sensing Characteristics of Sc2O3:Er3+/Yb3+ Phosphors

Abstract:Sc2O3:Er3+(x mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) (x = 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) and Sc2O3:Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(y mol%) (y = 1, 3, 5) phosphors were synthesized by CO2 laser zone-melting method. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra of Sc2O3:Er3+/Yb3+ fluorescent materials, which were pumped by 980 nm, were measured and analyzed. The results show that the UCL intensity reaches maxima when doped with 0.5 mol% Er3+ and 3 mol% Yb3+, and the increase of Yb3+ concentration leads to reduce the ratio of green UCL to red UCL. The temperature-dependent UCL spectra of Sc2O3:Er3+/Yb3+ fluorescent materials with various Er3+ and Yb3+ concentrations were measured from 290 K to 1023 K, and the thermal sensing characteristics were revealed via the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique. The maximal relative sensitivity (S-R) are almost independent of the Er3+ and Yb3+ concentration, while the maximal absolute sensitivity (S-A) increases with Yb3+ concentration in the whole measurement range. Among the prepared samples, the maxima of S-A and S-R are achieved for the sample of Sc2O3:Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(5 mol%), with the values of 5.34 x 10(-3) K-1 (364.1 K) and 12.5 x 10(-3) K-1 (290 K), respectively. Interestingly, for Sc2O3:Er3+ (0.5 mol%)/Yb3+ (3 mol%), having the highest UCL intensity, its maximum S-A and S-R are 4.90 x 10(-3) K-1 (371.4 K) and 11.2 x 10(-3) K-1 (290 K). The wide temperature sensing range and relatively high sensitivities of the fabricated materials provide excellent potential for temperature sensing.
Up-conversion Luminescence and Thermal Sensing Properties of LuYO3: Er3+/Yb3+ Phosphor

Abstract:A series of LuYO3: Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors with different Yb3+ concentrations were prepared through a melting zone method with CO2 laser. The samples emit bright up-conversion luminescence (UCL) under a 980 nm laser. The UCL intensity and the luminescence color change significantly when Yb3+ concentration changes. Besides, when doped with 3 mol% Yb3+, the UCL intensity is maximal. The thermal sensing properties of LuYO3: Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) were studied using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method from 298 K to 848 K. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.0050 K-1 at 366 K and 0.0167 K-1 at 298 K, respectively. Thus, the LuYO3: Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) fluorescent material is very suitable for thermal sensing because of the wide temperature range and the high sensitivity.

Abstract:Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Ln 3+ (Ln = Ho, Tm, Er) phosphors were synthesized by a hydrothermal method with further calcination. The crystal structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of rare earth ion interaction in the Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Ln 3+ phosphors on the upconversion (UC) luminescence properties and energy transfer process at different doping concentrations were discussed. It is concluded that by doping Ho 3+ , Tm 3+ , and Er 3+ in the Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 host, the phosphors emit orange-yellow, blue and green light, respectively, and the energy transfer from Yb 3+ → Ho 3+ /Er 3+ and Yb 3+ → Tm 3+ is a two and three photon process, respectively. Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser, by changing the Ho 3+ /Tm 3+ ratio in doped Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 , we have realized the transition of phosphors from cold white light to warm white light. The temperature sensitivity of the 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 energy levels of Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Er 3+ in the range of 323–573 K was studied by the FIR technology. The experimental results show that the maximum absolute sensitivity was 0.0081 K −1 at 573 K and the maximum relative sensitivity was 0.01 K −1 at 323 K. Compared with other materials, the Er 3+ doped Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 phosphor is an excellent optical temperature sensing material.

Simultaneous modulation of multicolor upconversion emission and thermal‐sensing performance of Ba5Zn4Y8O21 phosphors

Abstract:In this study, we report the modulation of the emission color and optical temperature‐sensing properties of Er3+ in Ba5Zn4Y8O21 crystals. Er3+ single‐doped Ba5Zn4Y8O21 phosphors showed green emission under 980 nm excitation. When codoping with Yb3+ ions, the red emission component from the Er3+ ions increased significantly, and the sample emission turned orange. Yb3+–Er3+ codoped Ba5Zn4Y8O21 samples exhibited bright red emission with a maximum IR/IG value of 89.30 when excited with a longer wavelength, 1550 nm. A broad range of emission colors could be modulated by adjusting the dopant concentration. The possible modulation mechanisms and upconversion processes were analyzed based on the luminescence decay curves and power‐dependent emission intensities. Furthermore, the optical temperature‐sensing properties of Ba5Zn4Y8O21:Er3+ and Ba5Zn4Y8O21:Er3+, Yb3+ phosphors with thermal coupled energy levels (TCELs) and nonthermal coupled energy levels (N‐TCELs) of Er3+ ions were investigated using fluorescence intensity ratio technique. Based on the TCELs (2H11/2/4S3/2), the Er3+ single‐doped and Yb3+–Er3+ codoped Ba5Zn4Y8O21 phosphors present the similar optical thermometry behaviors under 980 and 1550 nm excitation. The highest absolute (Sa) and relative sensitivity (Sr) are 3.95 × 10−3 K−1 at 573 K and 1.31% K−1 at 303 K, respectively. Based on N‐TCELs (4F9/2/2H11/2), the temperature‐sensing performance depends on the Yb3+ dopant and excitation wavelength. The highest values for Sa and Sr reached 5.46 K−1 at 303 K and 1.38% K−1 at 573 K for the Ba5Zn4Y8O21:Er3+, Yb3+ phosphor under 1550 nm excitation, respectively. In addition, the present phosphor exhibited high stability and repeatability over a wide temperature range. These results indicate that the multicolor modulation upconversion Ba5Zn4Y8O21‐based phosphor can be considered a potential reusable optical thermometer for noncontact temperature detection.

Abstract:Rare earth doped luminescent materials have unique up-conversion properties and can be applied to optical temperature sensing. In this work, the power-dependent emission intensity from bare core NaYF4:Er/Yb and core-shell structured NaYF4:Er/Yb@NaYF4 phosphors and the temperature sensing properties of NaYF4:Er/Yb@NaYF4 phosphors are investigated. The NaYF4:Er/Yb and NaYF4:Er/Yb@NaYF4 phosphors are prepared through typical co-precipitation method. The enhancement factor of emissions located at 520, 540 and 654 nm reach 1.51, 1.42 and 1.75, respectively, which is originated to the suppression of surface quenching. The enhancement factor decreases slowly with excitation power increasing due to the more sensitivity to laser power of the bare core phosphors. In addition, the green emissions (520 and 540 nm) exhibit distinct temperature-dependent behaviors, including relatively sensing sensitivity and thermal repeatability stability. The maximal relatively sensing sensitivity reaches 1.2 % K−1 at 294 K and The value of thermal repeatability stability reaches 98.4%.

Abstract:The Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped and Er3+ single doped oxyfluoride glasses were prepared by high temperature melting method. The optical properties of the samples were studied. According to differential thermal analysis (DTA) curve, the samples were thermal treated at 552°C, and micro-crystalline were formed after thermal treatment. The near infrared luminescence spectra under 980 nm excitation of the samples were recorded at room temperature. The results showed that the near infrared luminescence intensity increased with increasing Yb3+ concentration. This is because Yb3+ ions absorbed pumped energy of 980 nm through 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 transition, and then the energy was transferred to Er3+ ions by the way of resonance energy transfer and enhanced the 4I15/2 → 4I11/2 transition.

Abstract:Owing to the great role and application potential of upconversion luminescent materials in the field of temperature sensing, it is very essential to develop new rare-earth materials with excellent upconversion luminescence (UCL) and temperature sensing properties. In this study, an Er 3+ /Yb 3+ /Gd 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 as a UCL material was synthesized. In this system, Er is used as the luminescence centre; Yb is used as the sensitizer, and Gd can effectively adjust the crystal field of the matrix material and improve the UCL performance. In addition, the composition and intrinsic luminescence mechanism of the materials are studied in detail. It can be seen that the UCL intensity was strengthened for Er 3+ /Yb 3+ /Gd 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 compared to Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 . The results show that Gd 3+ can effectively improve the UCL intensity of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -doped YNbO 4 samples. Using fluorescence intensity ratio technology, we obtained the temperature sensing performance of the material, which has the highest sensitivity at 493 K (0.0033 K −1 ). This suggests that the material has great application potential in the fields of UCL and temperature sensing.

Abstract:Optical transition and near-infrared upconversion luminescence properties of Er3+ single-doped and Er3+, Yb3+ co-doped YNbO4 phosphors are reported. Based on the framework of Judd-Ofelt theory and modified Judd-Ofelt calculation method, the optical transition properties of Er3+ and Yb3+ ions in YNbO4: Er3+, Yb3+ sample were studied, respectively. The calculated results showed that the absorption cross-section of Er3+ ion at ∼1550 nm is larger than that at ∼980 nm in YNbO4: Er3+ phosphor. And, the absorption cross-section of 2F7/2 → 2F5/2 transition of Yb3+ in YNbO4: 15.0 mol% Er3+, 15.0 mol% Yb3+ sample was calculated to be 138.70 × 10−20 cm2. According to the emission cross section of Er3+ (4I11/2 → 4I15/2) and the absorption cross section of Yb3+ (2F7/2 → 2F5/2), the energy transfer rates from Er3+ to Yb3+ were quantitatively analyzed via the Föster-Dexter model. Furthermore, 1550 nm was selected as the excitation wavelength, the near-infrared upconversion emission spectra of YNbO4: Er3+, Yb3+ samples were measured. It was found that the sample has strong emission at ∼980 nm and the emission intensity was still enhanced with the incorporation of Yb3+.

Abstract:Novel tungsten bronze Ba4Gd0.65-xEr0.02YbXNb10O30 (0 <= x <= 0.1) phosphors were synthesized. Their phase and structure were characterized and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld structural refinements. Under 980 nm excitation, bright frequency up-conversion (FUC) green and weak red emissions were observed. The concentration of Yb3+ had an important influence on the FUC luminescence properties and a possible UC mechanism was proposed. Temperature sensing properties of the Ba4Gd0.55Er0.02Yb0.1Nb10O30 phosphor in the range from 303 to 573 K were obtained by measuring the temperature dependent fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of the FUC green emissions at 531 and 554 nm originated from two thermally coupled H-2(11/2) and S-4(3/2) emitting energy levels. A temperature-sensing sensitivity of 0.013K(-1) at 573 K was obtained experimentally and the obtained energy difference Delta E was 971 cm(-1), indicating that this material can be utilized as a promising candidate for the future optical temperature sensors of high accuracy and resolution. Abstract:In this article, the tunable-color emission properties of Ce3+/Eu3+ in NaY9Si6O26 phosphors were reported. Ce3+ and Eu3+ ions had effectively incorporated the sites of Na+ and Y3+ ions, which were revealed by Rietveld refinements. The site occupation preference of Ce3+ in cationic sites were discussed. The energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu3+ ion under the 312 nm excitation was ascribed to dipole-dipole interaction mechanism based on Dexter's energy transfer theory of multipolar interaction, which makes NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ produce tunable-color emission. Additionally, the temperature dependent emission spectra of the powders were studied. Temperature sensing performances were reflected by the fluorescence intensity ratio based on different temperature dependent variation tendency of Ce3+ and Eu3+ ions. The maximum values of the absolute and relative sensor sensitivities of NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ phosphors were about 0.0328 K−1 and 0.95 % K−1, respectively. Above all, NaY9Si6O26: Ce3+, Eu3+ phosphors show a promising prospect for optical thermometer applications.

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+)-doped upconversion luminescent (UCL) materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) property are endowed an exciting thermal enhancement performance. Hitherto, selectively thermal enhancement for the multi-narrow-band emissions of phosphor with NTE property is not implemented. Herein, Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor synthesized by the modified sol-gel method is explored in selectively enhanced green emission (Er3+: 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2) due to the formation of Yb-MoO4 dimer at high ambient-temperature. The 54-fold selectively enhancement of green emission is obtained from 298 K to 523 K. In addition, the influences of dopant-concentration and calcination-temperature on UCL properties are analyzed. Accordingly, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) for 2H11/2/2F9/2 and 4S3/2/2F9/2 as well as (2H11/2 + 4S3/2)/2F9/2, the optimal relative sensitivity of temperature sensing in the Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ sample could reach 0.14 K−1 at 298 K. All these indicate that this Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ material is a promising candidate for high-sensitivity optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate micrometer-sized NaYF4 crystals double-doped with Yb3+/Er3+ lanthanide ions, designed for temperature-sensing applications. In contrast to previous studies, which focused predominantly on the high-temperature regime, our investigation spans a comprehensive range of both high and ultralow temperatures. We explore the relationship between temperature and the upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra in both frequency and time domains. Our findings highlight the strong dependence of these spectral characteristics of lanthanide-doped NaYF4 crystals on temperature. Furthermore, we introduce a dual-mode luminescence temperature measurement technique, leveraging the upconversion emission intensity ratio for both green and red emissions. This study also examines the correlation between temperature sensing, energy level disparities, and thermal coupling in Er3+ ions across various temperature scales. Our research contributes to advancing the understanding and application of lanthanide-doped materials, setting a foundation for future innovations in temperature sensing across diverse fields.
Up-Converting Luminescence and Temperature Sensing of Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ Co-Doped NaYF4 Phosphors Operating in Visible and the First Biological Window Range

Abstract:Accurate and reliable non-contact temperature sensors are imperative for industrial production and scientific research. Here, Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors were studied as an optical thermometry material. The typical hydrothermal method was used to synthesize hexagonal Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors and the morphology was approximately rod-like. The up-conversion emissions of the samples were located at 475, 520, 550, 650, 692 and 800 nm. Thermo-responsive emissions from the samples were monitored to evaluate the relative sensing sensitivity. The thermal coupled energy level- and non-thermal coupled energy level-based luminescence intensity ratio thermometry of the sample demonstrated that these two methods can be used to test temperature. Two green emissions (520 and 550 nm), radiated from 2H11/2/4S3/2 levels, were monitored, and the maximum relative sensing sensitivities reached to 0.013 K−1 at 297 K. The emissions located in the first biological window (650, 692 and 800 nm) were monitored and the maximum relative sensing sensitivities reached to 0.027 (R692/650) and 0.028 K−1 (R692/800) at 297 K, respectively. These results indicate that Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped NaYF4 phosphors have potential applications for temperature determination in the visible and the first biological window ranges.

Abstract:Rare earth ions doped luminescent materials are considered as the potential candidates with a wide range of applications because of their unique optical characteristics. In this work, the single-phase Yb3+-Er3+ and Yb3+-Tm3+ co-doped La1.55SiO4.33 (LS) phosphors of hexagonal system were reported for optical thermometer. Three characteristic emissions of Er3+ were observed at 521, 553 and 659 nm in the LS:Yb3+,Er3+ under 980 nm excitation, which are assigned to the 2H11/2→4I15/2, 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4F9/2→4I15/2 transitions, respectively. In the LS:Yb3+,Tm3+ phosphors, one can find two strong emissions at 474 and 790 nm and two weak emissions at 648 and 685 nm. Their upconversion (UC) luminescence mechanisms were studied from the pump-power-dependent spectra. When the samples were measured at various temperatures, the spectral features revealed that different fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) strategies can be used to character their optical temperature-sensing behaviors. The sensor sensitivities by using thermally coupled energy levels (TCELs) and non-TCELs were determined from the temperature-dependent UC emission spectra, which have been improved compared with those of some other reported optical temperature-sensing luminescent materials. The device fabrication indicated that the developed UC phosphors are promising for applications in optical thermometer.

Abstract:Here, a series of Y2W3O12:Yb3+/RE3+(RE=Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors are prepared by solid state reaction. The upconversion and downshift luminescence properties of them are investigated under 980 nm excitation. The bright blue light fromTm3+ ion, green and red lights of Ho3+(Er3+) ions are observed. The near-infrared (NIR-I,~850 nm) of Tm3+, NIR-II(Er3+:~1550 nm;Tm3+:~1783 nm) and NIR-III(Ho3+:~2050 nm) are acquired. In particular, the dramatic thermal enhancement phenomenon of visible and NIR is obtained from Y2W3O12:Yb3+/RE3+(RE=Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors. Among them, the green light intensity of Er3+ ions is increased 26.77 times from 303 to 573 K. The NIR-II emission band(~1783 nm) intensity of Tm3+ ions at 533 K reaches 168.7 times in comparison with that at 313 K. The possible thermal enhancement mechanism is illustrated based on the negative thermal expansion (NTE) and Frenkel defect of Y2W3O12 host. At last, the optical temperature sensing performances of Y2W3O12:Yb3+/RE3+(RE=Er/Ho/Tm) samples are investigated according to luminescence intensity dependence relationship on temperature, respectively. The maximum value of SR reaches 4.24% K-1 at 353 K for Y2W3O12:Yb3+/Ho3+ phosphor. The results indicate that the Y2W3O12:Yb3+/RE3+ (RE=Er/Ho/Tm) phosphors possess anti-thermal quenching properties and are suitable for developing optical temperature sensor.

Abstract:Optical thermometry based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technology between the thermally coupled energy levels of Er3+ has become a research hotspot, but it is often limited by excitation conditions, which reduces its universality and reliability. In this work, Nd3+/Yb3+/Er3+ triply-doped LaNbO4 phosphor with excellent up-conversion (UC) luminescence characteristic and reliable temperature sensing sensitivity has been prepared by solid-state reaction method. Intense green and weak red UC emissions were gained under 808 nm and 980 nm excitations. The temperature dependent UC luminescence property and temperature sensing behavior of the sample has been investigated. The results demonstrated that the intensity ratio of the two green emissions was insensitive to the excitation wavelength and pumping power of the lasers, and the maximum absolute sensitivity was derived to be 0.91 % K−1 at 481 K. This work provides a new material with reliable and high temperature sensing sensitivity for optical thermometers.

Abstract:It is crucial to explore the intrinsic mechanisms that influence thermometric sensitivity. This study investigates the optical performance of materials with the same crystal structure but different phonon energies. Ln2O2S:Er3+/Yb3+ (Ln = La/Gd/Y) phosphors with similar morphology and particle sizes were prepared to systematically study the influence of different phonon energy matrices on optical properties. The intrinsic mechanism was elucidated through the matching degree between the energy gap and phonon energy, Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory, and quantum dielectric theory. It was ultimately concluded that the combination of high phonon energy with a large Ω2 and a small Ω6 is beneficial for enhancing the sensitivity of temperature sensing materials.

Abstract:In this work, NaYF4: 2 mol % Er3+, 20 mol % Yb3+ phosphors with cubic and hexagonal phases were prepared by co-precipitation method with different reaction temperature. The multi-photon up-conversion processes and optical temperature sensing properties are discussed. The emission spectra of hexagonal phase show higher emission intensity and lower red-to-green ratio (R/G), which are attributed to the decrease of local symmetric. And the number of photons (n), participated in the up-conversion processes, declines as the phase changes from cubic to hexagonal. This can be originated to the exhaustion of electrons on ground state level: 4I15/2 in hexagonal phase. And the fitting n of green emissions decline more obviously than red emission with temperature increasing. The temperature dependent FIR is fitted and the fitted function implies that the energy gap ∆E increases as the phase changes to hexagonal. And the max relative sensitivity reaches 0.012 K−1 at 300 K. Thus, NaYF4: 2 mol % Er3+, 20 mol % Yb3+ phosphors with hexagonal phase have higher S R and can be promising in FIR-based temperature sensing.
