Abstract:Owing to the great role and application potential of upconversion luminescent materials in the field of temperature sensing, it is very essential to develop new rare-earth materials with excellent upconversion luminescence (UCL) and temperature sensing properties. In this study, an Er 3+ /Yb 3+ /Gd 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 as a UCL material was synthesized. In this system, Er is used as the luminescence centre; Yb is used as the sensitizer, and Gd can effectively adjust the crystal field of the matrix material and improve the UCL performance. In addition, the composition and intrinsic luminescence mechanism of the materials are studied in detail. It can be seen that the UCL intensity was strengthened for Er 3+ /Yb 3+ /Gd 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 compared to Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 . The results show that Gd 3+ can effectively improve the UCL intensity of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -doped YNbO 4 samples. Using fluorescence intensity ratio technology, we obtained the temperature sensing performance of the material, which has the highest sensitivity at 493 K (0.0033 K −1 ). This suggests that the material has great application potential in the fields of UCL and temperature sensing.

Abstract:Motivated from increasing demands of non-contact optical temperature sensing, the Yb3+-Er3+ and Eu3+ doped NaY9Si6O26 (NYS) oxide phosphors were designed by high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase purity of the as-prepared samples was checked from XRD patterns. For the upconversion luminescence in NYS:Yb3+,Er3+, the optimal Er3+ doping content was determined to be 1 mol%, and the characteristic emission peaks of Er3+ were observed in the region of 500-700 nm. In Eu3+ activated NYS phosphors, it has been found that the emissions originating in 5D1 and 5D0 levels demonstrate different change tendencies in intensity with Eu3+ doping concentration. By studying the temperature-dependent luminescent spectra, it was indicated that the emissions intensities from different excited states of Er3+ change differently with temperature. Two kinds of fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) strategies were used in NYS:10%Yb3+,1%Er3+, containing thermally-coupled levels and non-thermally-coupled levels. In the NYS:3%Eu3+ phosphor, it was found that the FIR for 577 and 536 nm emissions follows a linear relation with temperature. The high sensitivities in the present phosphors indicate the potential application in optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:Novel tungsten bronze Ba4Gd0.65-xEr0.02YbXNb10O30 (0 <= x <= 0.1) phosphors were synthesized. Their phase and structure were characterized and analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld structural refinements. Under 980 nm excitation, bright frequency up-conversion (FUC) green and weak red emissions were observed. The concentration of Yb3+ had an important influence on the FUC luminescence properties and a possible UC mechanism was proposed. Temperature sensing properties of the Ba4Gd0.55Er0.02Yb0.1Nb10O30 phosphor in the range from 303 to 573 K were obtained by measuring the temperature dependent fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of the FUC green emissions at 531 and 554 nm originated from two thermally coupled H-2(11/2) and S-4(3/2) emitting energy levels. A temperature-sensing sensitivity of 0.013K(-1) at 573 K was obtained experimentally and the obtained energy difference Delta E was 971 cm(-1), indicating that this material can be utilized as a promising candidate for the future optical temperature sensors of high accuracy and resolution. Abstract:An investigation into the luminescent behavior of YCOB (Yttrium Calcium Oxyborate) doped with Eu 3+ and Dy 3+ ions, synthesized via the combustion method, is presented. The study, employing X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) analyses, confirms the structural integrity and purity of the synthesized nanophosphors. An XRD pattern exhibiting distinct crystalline peaks indicates that the dopant ions were successfully integrated into the YCOB lattice. The photoluminescence (PL) response of YCOB with Eu 3+ and Dy 3+ ions is thoroughly examined, uncovering distinct excitation and emission spectra. In the case of Eu 3+ doping, excitation spectra reveal a significant charge transfer (CT) band at 254 nm, indicative of electron transfer between oxygen and europium ions. This CT transition enhances our understanding of the excitation behavior, with the dominant and Laporte-forbidden 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 transition. Characteristic peaks at 345 nm in the excitation spectra efficiently stimulate YCOB:Dy 3+ when Dy 3+ is used as a dopant. The primary emission peak at 585 nm corresponds to the hypersensitive electric dipole transition 4 F 9/2 – 6 H 13/2 . Concentration quenching phenomena are observed, with a maximum Eu 3+ concentration of 7 wt % attributed to the dipole-quadrupole interaction. Dy 3+ doping, with a maximum concentration of 2 wt % primarily shows multipolar interactions, especially dipole-dipole interactions. The study extends to CIE chromaticity analysis, emphasizing Eu 3+ doping's suitability for white light-emitting diode (WLED) applications and ensuring color stability. Conversely, varying Dy 3+ concentrations do not yield consistent chromaticity coordinates. These findings have significant implications for the development of advanced phosphor materials across diverse applications, offering a roadmap for optimizing their optical performance.

Abstract:Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Ln 3+ (Ln = Ho, Tm, Er) phosphors were synthesized by a hydrothermal method with further calcination. The crystal structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The effects of rare earth ion interaction in the Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Ln 3+ phosphors on the upconversion (UC) luminescence properties and energy transfer process at different doping concentrations were discussed. It is concluded that by doping Ho 3+ , Tm 3+ , and Er 3+ in the Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 host, the phosphors emit orange-yellow, blue and green light, respectively, and the energy transfer from Yb 3+ → Ho 3+ /Er 3+ and Yb 3+ → Tm 3+ is a two and three photon process, respectively. Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser, by changing the Ho 3+ /Tm 3+ ratio in doped Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 , we have realized the transition of phosphors from cold white light to warm white light. The temperature sensitivity of the 2 H 11/2 and 4 S 3/2 energy levels of Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Er 3+ in the range of 323–573 K was studied by the FIR technology. The experimental results show that the maximum absolute sensitivity was 0.0081 K −1 at 573 K and the maximum relative sensitivity was 0.01 K −1 at 323 K. Compared with other materials, the Er 3+ doped Yb 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 phosphor is an excellent optical temperature sensing material.

Abstract:The temperature dependence of luminescence performance is crucial for most applications of the luminescent materials. Temperature dependent emission spectra of Y2MoO6: 20% Eu3+ phosphor were investigated over a very large temperature range from 20 to 500K, and the experimental result shows that the emission intensity decreases dramatically with the temperature increasing. With the help of the decay curves of the emission, the possible mechanisms for the thermal quenching behavior of the Eu3+ luminescence were discussed. Considering the acute change of the emission intensity with temperature, Eu3+ doped Y2MoO6 could be a promising candidate for temperature sensors.

Abstract:Up-conversion (UC) phosphors with multiple functions are highly desirable for many potentially technological applications which can stimulate the miniaturization and multipurpose of modern devices. In this work, Tm3+- and Yb3+-codoped SrBi4Ti4O15 (SBT:xTm(3+)/Yb3+) nanoparticles have been first synthesized by a convenient EDTA-citrate method. The structures and morphologies of SBT:xTm(3+)/Yb3+ were measured by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared reflectivity spectra and scanning electron microscope. Under 980 nm excitation, SBT:xTm(3+)/Yb3+ exhibited strong near-infrared (NIR) and weak visible emissions. The UC emissions were unveiled to be tightly related to the Tm3+ concentration and the optimum concentration was determined as x = 0.01. The possible UC mechanism was proposed. Importantly, based on thermo-responsive fluorescence intensity ratio approach, the optical thermometric properties were characterized in the temperature range between 313 and 573 K. The maximum sensitivity of SBT:0.01Er(3+)/Yb3+ UCNPs was obtained as 7.5 x 10(-4) K-1. Besides, excellent repeatability and stability were also realized by the thermal-cycling measurement. Furthermore, prominent photo-thermal (PT) effect was also achieved with a temperature coefficient being 0.81 degrees C.mm(2)/mW. Under periodic laser stimulation, the PT effect of the sample displayed regular response, indicating that the PT effect can be expediently controlled by 980 nm laser. These results indicate that SBT:xTm(3+)/Yb3+ UCNPs could be potential candidates for temperature sensors and PT agents.

Abstract:Ho3+/Gd3+ co-doped YbNbO4 phosphors were successfully synthesized by the high-temperature solid-state method. The crystal structure, morphology structure, element distribution, up-conversion luminescence and relative optical temperature sensing properties were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis demonstrated that the doping of Ho3+/Gd3+ ions had no change in crystal structure and microstructure of YbNbO4 phosphors. Under the excitation of 980 nm laser radiation, the green and red UC emissions were achieved by prepared phosphors, corresponding to the transitions of (5F4, 5S2)→5I8, 5F5→5I8 of Ho3+ ions. It is observed that the UC luminescence intensity was significantly enhanced for Ho3+/Gd3+ co-doped YbNbO4 samples compared to the mere Ho3+ doped YbNbO4 sample. Moreover, Ho3+/Gd3+ co-doped YbNbO4 samples' temperature sensitivity ranging from 303 to 663 K was calculated based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method. The maximum sensitivity reached 0.0078 K−1 at 663 K. These results indicate that the YbNbO4:Ho3+/Gd3+ samples are a promising candidate for optical temperature sensing and up-conversion luminescence.

Abstract:Optical thermometry based on the fluorescence intensity ratio technology between the thermally coupled energy levels of Er3+ has become a research hotspot, but it is often limited by excitation conditions, which reduces its universality and reliability. In this work, Nd3+/Yb3+/Er3+ triply-doped LaNbO4 phosphor with excellent up-conversion (UC) luminescence characteristic and reliable temperature sensing sensitivity has been prepared by solid-state reaction method. Intense green and weak red UC emissions were gained under 808 nm and 980 nm excitations. The temperature dependent UC luminescence property and temperature sensing behavior of the sample has been investigated. The results demonstrated that the intensity ratio of the two green emissions was insensitive to the excitation wavelength and pumping power of the lasers, and the maximum absolute sensitivity was derived to be 0.91 % K−1 at 481 K. This work provides a new material with reliable and high temperature sensing sensitivity for optical thermometers.

Abstract:A series of LuYO3: Er3+/Yb3+ phosphors with different Yb3+ concentrations were prepared through a melting zone method with CO2 laser. The samples emit bright up-conversion luminescence (UCL) under a 980 nm laser. The UCL intensity and the luminescence color change significantly when Yb3+ concentration changes. Besides, when doped with 3 mol% Yb3+, the UCL intensity is maximal. The thermal sensing properties of LuYO3: Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) were studied using the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) method from 298 K to 848 K. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are 0.0050 K-1 at 366 K and 0.0167 K-1 at 298 K, respectively. Thus, the LuYO3: Er3+(0.5 mol%)/Yb3+(3 mol%) fluorescent material is very suitable for thermal sensing because of the wide temperature range and the high sensitivity.

Abstract:The color-tunable upconversion (UC) emission and optical temperature sensing based on non-thermal coupled levels (NTCL) were observed from the Yb3+/Ho3+ codoped Lu3NbO7 phosphors synthesized by the solid-state method. The phosphors are capable of generating color tunable UC luminescence from green (yellow) to yellow (green) with the increase of the Yb3+ (Ho3+) concentration. The tunable emission is due to the different energy back transfer processes from Ho3+ to Yb3+. The temperature sensing performances are investigated in the temperature range of 293-573 K based on NTCL by using fluorescence intensity ratio technology. The maximum absolute sensitivities are 0.37%K-1, 0.94%K-1, 0.27%K-1 at 298 K, which are based on three pairs NTCL of (F-5(4)/S-5(2)-> I-5(8))/(F-5(5)-> I-5(8)), (F-5(5)-> I-5(8))/(F-5(4)/S-5(2)-> I-5(7)) and (F-5(4)/S-5(2)-> I-5(8))/(F-5(4)/S-5(2)-> I-5(7)) of Ho3+, respectively. The above results suggest that the as-prepared Lu3NbO7:Yb3+/Ho3+ phosphors have great potential for the application prospects of upconverter, color tunable device and optical temperature sensor.
A Potential Temperature Sensing Material: Studies of Structure and Temperature-Sensitive Photoluminescent Properties of Nb5+, Sm3+ Doped YTaO4

Abstract:Non-contact luminescence temperature measurement technology shows a broad application prospect in medical, high-temperature environment and other fields, which has attracted people's attention for its high-precision, real-time response and so on. In this work, Nb5+, Sm3+ single-doped and co-doped YTaO4 phosphor was designed. YTaO4 with M-type and M'-type structures can be obtained by adjusting the synthesis conditions. The structure and composition of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photoluminescent properties of NbO43- group and Sm3+ ions in M-type and M'-type YTaO4 matrix were studied. Due to the different thermal responses of Nb5+ and Sm3+ ions, the fluorescence intensity ratio between them can be used as temperature detecting signal. In the range of 77-500 K, the maximum relative sensitivity of the YTaO4: Nb5+, Sm3+ reaches 1.15 %K-1 at 450 K, indicating that the Nb5+ and Sm3+ co-doped M-type YTaO4 phosphors can be used as optical temperature sensor. This research may provide guidance for the design of other rare earth doped luminescent materials for temperature detection.

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+)-doped upconversion luminescent (UCL) materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) property are endowed an exciting thermal enhancement performance. Hitherto, selectively thermal enhancement for the multi-narrow-band emissions of phosphor with NTE property is not implemented. Herein, Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor synthesized by the modified sol-gel method is explored in selectively enhanced green emission (Er3+: 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2) due to the formation of Yb-MoO4 dimer at high ambient-temperature. The 54-fold selectively enhancement of green emission is obtained from 298 K to 523 K. In addition, the influences of dopant-concentration and calcination-temperature on UCL properties are analyzed. Accordingly, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) for 2H11/2/2F9/2 and 4S3/2/2F9/2 as well as (2H11/2 + 4S3/2)/2F9/2, the optimal relative sensitivity of temperature sensing in the Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ sample could reach 0.14 K−1 at 298 K. All these indicate that this Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ material is a promising candidate for high-sensitivity optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:This work reports on the luminescence properties of the Eu3+-doped high-temperature form of Bi2MoO6 by a solid-state reaction technique at high temperature. Various characterization methods including x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopic, Fourier transform infrared, and fluorescence spectroscopy measurements were utilized in order to investigate the phase purity and surface morphology as well as photoluminescence properties for as-prepared phosphors. The spectroscopic characteristics including excitation and emission spectrum, concentration quenching phenomenon, decay curves, and chromaticity coordinates are discussed in detail. The nature of the luminescence behavior of Eu3+ was understood in term of the Judd–Ofelt theory, and the luminescent quantum efficiency of 5D0 → 7F2 transition of Eu3+ was estimated. The as-prepared phosphors can be effectively excited with a 465-nm blue light, and exhibit a reddish-orange emission belonging to the prevailing 5D0 → 7F2 transition of Eu3+ with a decay time of milliseconds. This indicates that the Bi2MoO6:Eu3+ phosphors could have potential application in white light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs) based on blue LED chips.

Up-conversion luminescence and optical temperature sensing of Er3+, Yb3+ co-doped Gd2O3 phosphors with different F-/Ln3+

Abstract:In this work, the Er3+, Yb3+co-doped Gd2O3 phosphors have been prepared through a facile hydrothermal method. The optimum doping concentration of the Er3+, Yb3+ co-doped Gd2O3 phosphors are studied in detail. By studying the samples calcined at different temperatures, the process of grain forming self-assembled structure was revealed. The up-conversion luminescence intensity of the phosphors can be regulated by the ratio of NH4F and lanthanoid nitrate (F-/Ln3+) in the synthesis process. The enhancement of red and green emission intensities can reach 8.0 times, 6.7 times respectively than the sample with F-/Ln3+ = 0.5. In addition, the florescence intensity ratio based on thermally coupled energy levels by the Stark sublevels is also investigated. The maximal absolute sensitivity of optical temperature sensing reaches 1.27% K−1 at 574 K, which is 1.51 times higher than that based on traditional thermally coupled energy levels by Stark levels. Therefore, the results show that this is a useful method to improve the absolute sensitivity of optical temperature sensing and the Er3+, Yb3+ co-doped Gd2O3 phosphors have application potential in high sensitivity optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:A novel Eu2+-Eu3+ co-activated ratiometric thermo-sensitive phosphor was developed and synthesized by solid-state reaction. The valence state of Eu, photoluminescence and thermo-sensitive performance of the phosphor prepared either in ambient air or carbothermally were investigated and discussed. The phosphor shows high sensitivity (S a = 0.0173 K–1, S r = 0.461%/K) and superior signal discriminability (Δν = ∼10380 cm−1). The thermo-sensitive performance is subject to the dual effects of different thermo-responses by Eu2+ versus Eu3+ combined with energy transfer from Eu2+ to Eu3+, so that the sensitivity of the phosphor in the temperature range presents a non-monotonic trend. The development of the BaAl2B2O7:Eu2+,Eu3+ phosphor is not only expected to be relevant for application in the field of temperature sensing, but also of reference significance for improving the sensitivity by means of energy transfer between co-activator ions over a wider temperature range of Eu2+-Eu3+ co-activated ratiometric thermo-sensitive phosphors. 1.

Abstract:Non-contact remote optical thermometers as a significant technique have been extensively developed. However, it is still a challenge to design new Bismuth-doped phosphor materials with tunable spectra for high-sensitive optical temperature sensors. Herein, a novel YxLu1-xNbO4:Bi3+ (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) phosphor is constructed by the isomorphic end components LuNbO4 and YNbO4. Owing to the modification of crystal field strength around Bi3+ ions, the emission positions controllably shifted from 475 to 462 nm with the increase of Y3+ ions concentrations. Besides, systematic luminescence modifying from blue to red across the white light region could be achieved via the design of Bi3+→Eu3+ energy transfer (ET). Intriguingly, an anti-thermal-quenching behavior of Eu3+ ion originating from the ET is found in Y0.8Lu0.2NbO4:Bi3+, Eu3+ (YLNO:Bi3+, Eu3+) phosphors, while Bi3+ ion presents a great emission intensity loss with only retaining 46.8% at 383 K. Based on the disparate thermal responses, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of Eu3+ to Bi3+ demonstrates excellent thermometry properties from 303 to 503 K. The maximum absolute sensitivity (Sa) and relative sensitivity (Sr) reach 0.318 K−1 (@328 K) and 1.62%K−1 (@393 K). In addition, the thermochromic performance of the resultant phosphors could be applied to qualitatively estimate the surrounding temperature. The spectral adjustability and high-sensitive of the developed phosphors highlight their multiplicity of applications in non-contact temperature measurement and white LED.
