Abstract:Zn-Al2O3 supports were prepared by impregnating commercial gamma-Al2O3 powders with different amounts of Zn(NO3)(2), followed by calcination in air at 500 or 800 degrees C. Rh/Zn-Al2O3 catalysts were then prepared by impregnating Zn-Al2O3 supports with Rh(NO3)(3) followed by calcination in air at 500 degrees C. The catalysts and/or supports were characterized by ICP-OES, XRD, N-2 adsorption, Raman spectroscopy, TEM-EDX, XPS, CO2-TPD, H-2-TPR, and O-2-TPD, and the catalytic performance of supported Rh catalysts in N2O decomposition was tested. It is concluded that the support can be described as ZnO/Al2O3 (ZnO supported on Al2O3) when calcining Zn(NO3)(2)/Al2O3 at 500 degrees C, whereas ZnAl2O4 spinel forms on the Al2O3 surface at 800 degrees C. Rh/Zn-Al2O3 catalysts are much more active than Rh/Al2O3 and Rh/ZnO. The best catalyst (Rh/Zn-Al2O3-800 with 1 wt% Rh and 1 wt% Zn) has the smallest Rh2O3 particle size and can desorb O-2 at lower temperature than other catalysts. Both factors may be important for achieving high activity in N2O decomposition.

Abstract:RhOx/M-P-O (M = Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Co, Zn, La) catalysts were tested in N2O decomposition. RhOx/Ca-P-O showed the highest activity, achieving complete N2O conversion at 300 degrees C. RhOx/La-P-O is the second most active catalyst, achieving almost complete conversion at 375 degrees C. RhOx/Mg-P-O, RhOx/Co-P-O, and RhOx/Al-P-O showed lower activities, whereas RhOx/Fe-P-O and RhOx/Zn-P-O were completely inactive. The high activity of RhOx/Ca-P-O is ascribed to the presence of very small RhOx particles, more basic sites, and the easiness of desorbing O-2 at low temperatures. The inhibiting effects of co-fed O-2 and/ or H2O on the catalytic activity of RhOx/Ca-P-O are reversible. (C) 2015 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. Abstract:The catalytic decomposition of N2O was investigated over a series of Cu-ZSM-11 catalysts with different Si/Al ratios. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, N-2 adsorption, SEM, Al-27 MAS NMR, DRIFTS, XPS, and H-2-TPR. These catalysts were found to be effective for N2O decomposition. The catalytic activity in terms of conversion decreases when the Si/Al ratio increases, due to the decreased amount of active Cu+ species and the weakened reducibility of active sites. A comparison of Cu-ZSM-11 and Cu-ZSM-5 with the same Si/Al ratio demonstrates that Cu-ZSM-11 is apparently more active than Cu-ZSM-5, due to the enhanced reducibility of active Cu+ species and better accessibility of active sites in Cu-ZSM-11. Abstract:Supported rhodium oxide (RhOx) catalysts have emerged as highly promising for effectively catalytic decomposition of N2O, hence contributing to the mitigation of greenhouse gas emission and combating global warming. Supported RhOx catalysts outperform catalysts employing zeolites and composite metal oxides even under challenging conditions involving O2, H2O, and CO2. This study explores the augmentation of Rh/ZrO2 (RhOx supported on monoclinic ZrO2) catalyst efficiency through the addition of palladium (Pd) to yield RhPd/ZrO2. The augmented catalyst demonstrates notable improvements in N2O decomposition under both N2O-only and more realistic conditions (N2O + O2 + H2O + CO2). Various techniques, including high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy, were employed to investigate the structural characteristics of Rh and Pd species on ZrO2. Kinetic studies further delved into the promotional effect, revealing that the introduction of Pd enhanced the catalytic activity of RhOx catalysts by augmenting their thermal reduction capability. This enhancement proved beneficial in facilitating the efficient progression of the rate-determining step for N2O catalytic decomposition, namely the thermal reduction of the catalyst to produce gaseous O2, particularly at low temperatures. These results highlight the potential of Pd-mediated improvements in Rh/ZrO2 catalysts for sustainable and efficient N2O decomposition.

Abstract:Numerous Rh catalysts were evaluated for N2O decomposition for automotive applications. Some Rh-containing spinel materials exhibit excellent fresh activities in the absence of H2O but become inactive after hydrothermal aging or when tested in a wet feed. Rh catalysts supported on zeolites can be very active in a dry feed even after aging but are extremely sensitive to H2O. Rh/CeO2 is an exceptional catalyst for this reaction in the presence of both H2O and O-2. Hydrothermal aging (750 degrees C/20 h) significantly increases its activity. A similar activity enhancement was found by calcining the support before Rh impregnation. XPS results show a surface enrichment of Rh species on the aged Rh/CeO2 catalyst relative to the fresh catalyst. Aberration corrected STEM images reveal that Rh is buried in the bulk on the fresh catalyst and pulled out onto the surface of the support after thermal treatments. All catalysts are inhibited by H2O with the zeolite-based Rh catalysts being the worst. The aged Rh/CeO2 catalyst is less sensitive to H 2 O relative to others. DRIFTS data show that H2O sensitivity is related to catalyst hydrophilicity; a high coverage of OH groups on a catalyst reduces its N2O decomposition activity. H2TPR results show that a Rh/CeO2 catalyst can be readily reduced at < 100 degrees C. On a reduced Rh/CeO2 catalyst, near complete N2O conversion can be obtained with a lean feed at 250 degrees C for a duration equivalent to its oxygen storage capacity. The N2O-DRIFTS experiments over a pre-reduced Rh/CeO2 catalyst show that CO + sites are quickly oxidized to Ce4+ upon contacting N2O at room temperature, resulting N-2 and adsorbed O, with the latter being an efficient oxidizer. Based on these results, a N2O decomposition mechanism is proposed for the Rh/CeO2 catalyst.

Abstract:The size of metal species plays a pivotal role in governing catalytic performance of supported metal catalysts. In this work, a series of Rh encapsulated within silicalite-1 catalysts with different sizes were prepared by one-pot hydrothermal method and employed to catalyze the decomposition of N2O. Detailed structure determinations by HAADF-STEM, XPS and CO-DRIFTS demonstrate that subtle modulation of the encapsulated Rh species were achieved easily from single-atom to nanoclusters and nanoparticles by controlling the loading and reduction conditions of Rh. The turnover frequency (TOF) of N2O decomposition showed a typical volcano-type dependence on Rh size. Kinetic studies revealed that this structure-sensitive catalysis was related to the difference in N2O and O2 adsorption/desorption for various Rh species. Furthermore, a Rh@S-1 catalyst with a proper Rh size (ca. 1.6 nm) was identified as the best-performing catalyst with a maximum TOF (ca. 95 h−1), showing much superior activity than other reported Rh-based catalysts.

Abstract:Cu-Al-O x mixed metal oxides with intended molar ratios of Cu/Al = 85/15, 78/22, 75/25, 60/30, were prepared by thermal decomposition of precursors at 600 °C and tested for the decomposition of nitrous oxide (deN2O). Techniques such as XRD, ICP-MS, N2 physisorption, O2-TPD, H2-TPR, in situ FT-IR and XAFS were used to characterize the obtained materials. Physico-chemical characterization revealed the formation of mixed metal oxides characterized by different specific surface area and thus, different surface oxygen default sites. The O2-TPD results gained for Cu-Al-O x mixed metal oxides conform closely to the catalytic reaction data. In situ FT-IR studies allowed detecting the form of Cu+⋯N2 complexes due to the adsorption of nitrogen, i.e. the product in the reaction between N2O and copper lattice oxygen. On the other hand, mostly nitrate species and NO were detected but those species were attributed to the residue from catalyst synthesis.
N2O decomposition by mesoporous silica supported Rh catalysts

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N(2)O), a greenhouse gas produced by nitric acid and adipic acid plants, damages the ozone layer and causes many environmental problems. The potential of MCM-41, SBA-15-Conventional (SBA-15-C), SBA-15-Spherical (SBA-15-S) and KIT-6 supported Rh catalysts has been explored at specific conditions for N(2)O decomposition in order to investigate the characteristics of new catalyst supports (SBA-15-S, KIT-6) for this application. A Rh metal loading of 1 wt% was impregnated to synthesize mesoporous silica supported Rh catalysts. The catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N(2) adsorption/desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and CO-chemisorption techniques. Of all the catalysts, Rh/SBA-15-S not only showed the highest activity, but also the best strength against ageing impact, O(2) inhibiting effect and long-term stability. The higher metal dispersion due to the smaller Rh particle size and a greater formation of Rh(+1) than Rh(0) or Rh(+3) on SBA-15-S compared to the other supports, favoured a higher N(2)O decomposition. The larger pore size of SBA-15-S in Rh/SBA-15-S might favour a better Rh access, diffusion and dispersion and lead to higher activity. The higher long-term stability of Rh/SBA-15-S, with preserved support characteristics, than the other supports indicates its significance.

Abstract:Hexagonal CePO4 nanorods were prepared by a precipitation method and hexagonal CePO4 nanowires were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis at 150 °C. Rh (NO3)3 was then used as a precursor for the impregnation of Rh2O3 onto these CePO4 materials. The Rh2O3 supported on the CePO4 nanowires was much more active for the catalytic decomposition of N2O than the Rh2O3 supported on CePO4 nanorods. The stability of both catalysts as a function of time on stream was studied and the influence of the co-feed (CO2, O2, H2O or O2/H2O) on the N2O decomposition was also investigated. The samples were characterized by N2 adsorption-desorption, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron microscopy, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, oxygen temperature-programmed desorption, and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption in order to correlate the physicochemical and catalytic properties.

Abstract:A series of Fe-ZSM-11 catalysts were prepared by different methods and tested in N2O decomposition. First, Fe-ZSM-11 catalysts with different Si/Al ratios (15, 25, 36) were prepared by wet ion exchange. The Fe content and catalytic activity were highest for the catalyst with Si/AI ratio 15. Additional Fe-ZSM-11 catalysts with higher Fe contents were prepared by semicontinuous ion exchange or by using alkaline-treated ZSM-11 as the precursor for wet ion exchange. While the catalyst prepared by semicontinuous ion exchange showed low activity, the catalyst prepared using alkaline-treated ZSM-11 turned out to be the most active in this study. Relevant characterization was conducted using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, inductively coupled plasma, N-2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetization tests, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Our data indicate that small FeOx nanopartides and large iron oxide particles are the predominant Fe species, and small FeOx nanoparticles with low nuclearity are the active Fe species. Abstract:ZSM-5 nanosheets were prepared using [C18H37-N+(CH3)2-C6H12-N+(CH3)2-C6H13]Br2 as a template and then ion-exchanged with Cu cations. The catalytic performance of the obtained Cu-ZSM-5 nanosheets in N2O decomposition was investigated and compared with that of conventional Cu-ZSM-5. Higher activity as well as better stability was observed for Cu-ZSM-5 nanosheets although the Cu contents of the catalysts were identical. Relevant characterization was conducted using XRF, ICP, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, SEM, TEM, CO-IR, H2-TPR and O2-TPD. The data show that the better catalytic performance of Cu-ZSM-5 nanosheets is probably due to better accessibility of active sites, better reducibility of active Cu+ species, and the weakened interaction between oxygen and Cu+ sites.
Hydroxyapatite-supported Rhodium Catalysts for N2O Decomposition

Abstract:Several hydroxyapatite (HAP) supports were prepared by precipitation under different pH values (8.5, 9.5, or 10.5), and rhodium was loaded onto the supports by impregnation followed by calcination at 500°C. The pH value during the precipitation was found to play an important role in determining the catalytic activity of the resulting catalysts in N2O decomposition. The Rh/HAP catalyst prepared under optimal conditions (pH 10.5) showed superior catalytic activity than Rh/Al2O3, Rh/TiO2, and Rh/SiO2, due to the rich basic sites of the HAP support and the dispersion of ultra small rhodium particles on HAP. A pretreatment of Rh/HAP in 4% H2 at 400°C can further improve the activity owing to the partial reduction of the rhodium species. The catalysts/supports were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO2 temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a significant greenhouse gas and its emissions from fluidized bed combustion systems can be controlled using catalytic conversion and decomposition. The catalytic decomposition of N2O was studied in a quartz fixed-bed reactor at 450-700 degrees C. The low-cost catalyst was prepared from fly ash and iron oxides, and was characterized in terms of the BET specific surface area and XRD. This study showed that both the Fe content on the catalyst surface and the calcination temperature during the preparation of the catalyst should be optimized in order to significantly improve the catalyst performance when used for N2O decomposition. The influences of O-2, H2O, CO2 and SO2 on the N2O decomposition were investigated at the most reactive temperature. Experimental results showed that O-2 had a small negative effect on the catalytic activity, while CO2 had no obvious effect on the N2O decomposition. The N2O conversion was still high even when H2O was present. However, the N2O conversion dropped sharply when H2O and O-2 were both present. The catalytic activity was reduced by SO2 because of its reaction with the catalyst. The difference between the N2O conversion with H2O present and with both H2O and O-2 present was analyzed in order to determine the N2O decomposition mechanism. Two mechanisms for the N2O catalytic decomposition mechanism have been considered, of which the one with formation of oxygen atoms at two sites with migration and recombination shows better agreement with our experimental results. Abstract:Zeolitic-imidazolate framework precursors (ZIF-67) were synthesized in an inorganic solution with triethylamine as a deprotonating agent for N2O decomposition, and the catalytic activities of the pyrolysis products under different conditions were investigated. Among them, the Co/CoOx@carbon catalyst pyrolyzed at 650 degrees C in a N-2 atmosphere (Co-650N) exhibited excellent low-temperature catalytic activity and stability, achieving 50% decomposition efficiency at 305 degrees C and similar to 100% at 400 degrees C, which benefitted from its large specific surface area, great reduction performance, abundant cobalt active sites, and surface oxygen species. Further, utilizing temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and in situ diffused reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results, it was found that N2O molecules preferentially combined with oxygen species bound to cobalt sites. The absorbed N2O was decomposed into N-2 and oxygen species, and the latter was subsequently transferred to carbon frameworks. Interestingly, the amorphous graphitic carbon frameworks played an important role in transferring/storing active oxygen and regenerating cobalt sites. Moreover, Co-650N exhibited better resistance to SO2, and the efficiency could be recovered via heating and finally stabilized at 100%. Finally, the mechanisms of N2O decomposition and sulfur poisoning-reactivation on Co/CoOx@carbon catalysts were proposed for the first time.

Abstract:The catalytic N2O decomposition was investigated over a series of NiCe mixed oxides. Characterizations of XRD, N2-adsorption, SEM, XPS, and H2-TPR were applied to correlate their properties with the corresponding catalytic performance. The catalyst Ni90Ce10 prepared by citrate acid method exhibited the highest catalytic activity among the mixed oxides, which could completely decompose N2O at 400 °C in the presence of oxygen. The introduction of CeO2 could prevent the agglomeration of NiO and preserve high surface area. A strong interaction between NiO and CeO2 was observed in the mixed oxides; the interaction enhanced oxygen mobility and resisted the inhibition of O2.

Abstract:A series of Cd-doped NiO catalysts were prepared and tested in the N2O catalytic decomposition reaction. In comparison with NiO, it was found that the Cd0.04Ni catalyst showed higher N2O decomposition activity in the temperature range of 300-450 degrees C with or without O2, and lower activation energy (77.8 kJ mol- 1). The incorporation of Cd into the NiO lattice was verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Raman spectra. This led to the distortion of the original NiO structure and weakened the Ni-O bond. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that compared with NiO and CdO, Cd0.04Ni possessed higher Ni2+ and Cd(n+1)+ contents, which might have been induced by the electron transfer behavior between CdO and NiO. A possible mechanism for active site regeneration and O2 desorption over Cd0.04Ni was proposed. The Cd0.04Ni catalyst also exhibited good resistance to NO and O2.
