Abstract:Site-selective occupation generated by ion doping into crystal lattices is an effective way to explore new matter and regulate luminescent properties. Herein, equiv. M2+ (Ca, Sr, Ba) is partially replaced each other to formulate multiple doped sites in Li2MSiO4: Eu2+ (LMSO: Eu2+). As the luminescence center, Eu2+ selectively occupies different sites to regulate luminescent color in the visible spectrum ranging from blue to orange, and ultimately functionality improvement. The Huang-Rhys factor is quite small and the resulting phosphors display an ultrahigh thermal stability for optical thermometry. Besides, utilizing synthesized phosphors combined with the InGaN chip generates high-quality full-spectrum white light. Under X-ray irradiation, LMSO: Eu2+ (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) exhibits great X-ray imaging ability, the detection limit of X-ray reaches 0.18, 0.075, and 0.12 mu Gy s(-1). Abstract:A series of SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) (0.005 ≤x≤ 0.05) phosphors were successfully synthesized through a pressureless, facile, and efficient solid state route. The crystal structure, band structure, and their photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. The phosphors exhibit rod shape morphology with a uniform Eu(2+) distribution. Under n-UV excitation the emission spectra shift from 477 to 497 nm with an increase of Eu(2+) concentration. The concentration quenching mechanism of Eu(2+) emission was dominated by the dipole-dipole interaction. The thermal stability is comparable to that of the commercial Ba2SiO4:Eu(2+) phosphor. The phosphor also exhibits high current saturation and high resistance under low voltage electron bombardment. All the results indicate that the SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) phosphors can be considered as candidates for application in both white LEDs and FEDs.

Abstract:Regulation of Eu2+ dopants in different cation sites of solid-state materials is of great significance for designing multicolor phosphors for light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, we report the selective occupation of Eu2+ for multiple cationic sites in KSrScSi2O7, and the tunable photoluminescence from blue to cyan is realized through Eu2+ doping concentration-dependent crystal-site engineering. Eu2+ preferably occupies the K and Sr sites in KSrScSi2O7 at a low doping concentration, resulting in a 440 nm blue emission. As the Eu2+ concentration increases, a new Eu2+ substitution pathway is triggered, that is, Eu2+ enters the Sc site, leading to the red-shifted emission spectra from 440 to 485 nm. The doping mechanism and photoluminescence properties are corroborated by structural analysis, optical spectroscopy study, and density functional theory calculations. The optical properties of the as-fabricated white LEDs are studied, which demonstrates that these phosphors can be applied to full-spectrum phosphor-converted LEDs. This study provides a new design strategy to guide the development of multicolor Eu2+-doped oxide phosphors for lighting applications.

Abstract:Controlled photoluminescence tuning is essential for optimizing and accelerating the application of phosphor materials. Here, we adopt the crystal-site engineering method to tailor the photoluminescence properties in Ba3ScB3O9:Eu2+. Ba3ScB3O9 host contains multiple cationic sites which help to finely regulate Eu2+ site occupancies and thus the emission color. The relationship between Eu2+ emission and the local environments has been analyzed, and we demonstrate that the emission colors of the phosphors can be widely tuned from NIR to yellow by chemically driving the Eu2+ from octahedrally-coordinated Sc3+ sites to nine-fold coordinated Ba2+ sites. Our study will initiate and guide more explorations on discovering new phosphors through crystal-site engineering.

Abstract:A series of CaSrSiO4:xDy3+,yEu3+ white phosphors were successfully synthesized by high-temperature solid-phase reaction technique. The physical phase, optical performance, energy transfer mechanism and thermal stability of the samples were studied. It has been shown that the concentration quenching point of CaSrSiO4:xDy3+ phosphors is x = 0.05 at the excitation of 365 nm. In CaSrSiO4:0.05Dy3+,yEu3+ phosphors, the emission intensity of Dy3+ gradually decreases with the increase of Eu3+ doping concentration. While the emission intensity of Eu3+ first increases and then decreases, the concentration quenching point of Eu3+ is y = 0.08. The analysis of the lifetime decay curves demonstrates the existence of an energy transfer process from Dy3+ to Eu3+ in CaSrSiO4:Dy3+,Eu3+ phosphors. The energy transfer from Dy3+ to Eu3+ is dominated by dipole-dipole interactions, with the highest energy transfer efficiency of 63.1 %. By adjusting the doping concentration of Eu3+, the doping of Eu3+ not only effectively improves the stability of phosphor, but also enables tunable color temperature from cold white light to neutral white light, which is a potentially promising white light emitting material.

Abstract:A series of single-phased emission-tunable SrCaAl2SiO7:Dy3+, Tm3+ phosphors were successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction process. By controling the energy transfer, the emission colors could be tuned from blue to yellow, including the white light region. It was discovered that the energy is transferred from Tm3+ to Cy3+ by luminescence spectra and decay curves. The resonance-type energy transfer from Tm3+ to Dy3+ was demonstrated to be via the dipole-dipole mechanism. By changing the doping concentration of Dy3+ and Tm3+ in SrCaAl2SiO7, the sample with corresponding color coordinates close to the white color chromaticity coordinates (x=0.33, y=0.33) could be realized. A study on the luminescence of different crystallographic sites for Sr2SiO4 : Eu2 + phosphors

Abstract:Sr2SiO4:xEu2+ samples were prepared using a solid-state reaction method. Eu2+ activators are located at two different crystallographic sites, namely high energy site and low energy site. The emission band of Sr2-xSiO4:xEu2+ is a super-position of two distinct emission peaks at 480 nm and 530 nm. The luminescence properties of the two different crystallographic Sr2+ sites are influenced by Eu2+ concentration and excitation wavelength. It is found that the concentration quenching phenomenon is observed at two sites, with the increase of doping concentration. With the decrease of the excitation light energy, the emission intensity ratio of low energy site to high energy site is increasing. It shows that different sites have an obvious selective absorption. The process parameters are also investigated in this paper.

Abstract:The union of chemical compositions substitution and spectral controlling is of importance for the discovery of new materials or the implementation of properties optimization. In this work, we employed an effective strategy to regulate crystal structures by chemical unit co-substitution. We applied this strategy to Eu 3+ -doped Sr 2 (Al 1−x Mg x )(Al 1−x Si 1+x )O 7 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solution phosphor, which was successfully synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction. The crystal structure remained the same group, P-42 1 m , with controlling chemical compositions. The excitation peaks shifted between 263 and 270 nm and emission peaks shifted between 612 and 614 nm with a decreasing Stocks shift in overall tendency. The shift trend was clarified by Crystal Field Theory. The energy band structure and density of states of Sr 2 Al 2 SiO 7 and Sr 2 MgSi 2 O 7 were calculated by Density Functional Theory using the generalized gradient approximation. The band gap was also analyzed by diffuse reflectance spectrum as a contrast. The morphology was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, the photoluminescence color of phosphors could be tuned from yellow to orange.

Abstract:Rare earth ions' site occupation is significant for studying luminescence properties by changing the host composition. The (Ba1-xSrx)(9)Lu2Si6O24:Eu2+ (x=0-0.4) tunable-color phosphors were synthesized via a high temperature solid-state reaction. With the Sr2+ ions concentration increase, the luminescent color could be tuned from blue to green. This phenomenon is discussed in detail through the ions occupation in the host lattice. More importantly, the temperature-dependent luminescence of (Ba1-xSrx)(9)Lu2Si6O24:Eu2+ phosphors was investigated and exhibited excellent thermal stability. Furthermore, white LED device has been fabricated using (Ba1-xSrx)(9)Lu2Si6O24:Eu2+ phosphor mixed with commercial red phosphor Sr2Si5N8:Eu3+ combined with a 370nm UV-chip. This device showed correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5125K and high color render index (CRI) of 91. This phosphor will be a promising candidate as a tunable-color phosphor for UV-based white LEDs.

Abstract:A color-tunable phosphor Li2SrSiO4:Eu2+,Eu3+,Ce3+ (LSSO:Eu2+,Eu3+,Ce3+) was synthesized by solid state reaction in reducing atmosphere followed by a controlled heating in air at different temperatures. Due to the different sensitivities to oxidation of the Eu2+ and Ce3+ ions, the emission centers Eu2+/Eu3+/Ce3+ can coexist in the Li2SrSiO4 host and enable a tunable coloration of the “blue-yellow-red” photoemission. By controling the energy transfer between the different activators, a single phase white phosphor was obtained.

Abstract:Currently, nitridation of phosphors provides an enormous inspiration for phosphor designing. In this paper, a nitridation process by means of substituting Al3+O2− with Si4+N3− in initial Sr3Al2O5Cl2:Eu2+ system is implemented. The phase purity is confirmed by X‐ray diffraction. The corresponding photoluminescence properties are recorded and analyzed by the excitation and emission spectra. Interestingly, new blue emission bands emerge in the range of 400–500 nm and the intensity increases with the increasing of substitution concentration. It is verified that the new emission band is derived from the residence of Eu2+ ions in the interstitial sites. The crystal structure refinement, transmission electron microscopy, and solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are exploited to analyze the color‐tunable luminescence mechanisms induced by the structural variation. Moreover, the thermal stability is characterized by the temperature‐dependent spectra. Attributed to the enhancement of lattice rigidity, the serious thermal quenching behavior is improved. Finally, the electroluminescence performance is measured for the fabricated white light‐emitting diodes (LEDs). By combining 370 nm ultraviolet LED chips, CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ and Sr3Al2O5Cl2:Eu2+ phosphors, an ideal warm‐white emitting LED is successfully fabricated with the color rendering index = 92, color temperature = 3476 K, and color coordinate x = 0.37, y = 0.34.

Abstract:Currently, controllable luminescence tuning and the generation of single component white emission are viable strategies to modify and optimize the luminescence performances of phosphors, which offer appealing prospects for the w-LED lighting industry. In this paper, we designed two-dimensional (2D) tunable color coordinates on the CIE diagram in the Eu2+,Mn2+ doped (Ca,Sr)(9x)Sc(PO4)(7) system by a combination of crystal field regulation and the energy transfer method. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement were utilized to analyze the phase composition and structural variation of the studied phosphors. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photoluminescence spectra were exploited to analyze the generation of nanosegregation. The effects of the schedule of cation substitutions and energy transfer on the photoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. The corresponding luminescence mechanisms of the red-shifted emission with Sr2+ Ca2+ substitution and Eu2+ Mn2+ energy transfer were deeply discussed and proposed. In addition, the temperature-dependent thermal quenching behavior and the electroluminescence (EL) performance of the fabricated w-LED devices were also investigated to characterize the prepared Ca9(1-0.03-x-y)Sr9xSc(PO4)(7):0.27Eu(2+),9yMn(2+). Finally, a representative w-LED device composed of a 369 nm UV chip and Ca9(1-0.03-0.02-0.5)Sr4.5Sc(PO4)(7):0.27Eu(2+),0.18Mn(2+) could present excellent EL performance with the parameters CRI = 88, CCT = 3122 K and color coordinate (0.45, 0.44), which could well meet the commercial standard of warm white light. Therefore, our results suggest that this two-step luminescence tuning method is feasible to be applied in other phosphor systems for obtaining efficient white emitting phosphors.

Abstract:Multi-color single-phase white emission Sr3B2SiO8:Tm3+/Dy3+/Eu3+ fluorescent powders were prepared by solid-state fritting method. The fluorescence performance of Tm3+, Dy3+ and Eu3+ ions single-activated Sr3B2SiO8 phosphors were investigated and they exhibit desirable behaviors in their characteristic emissions. Meanwhile, the energy required for migration from Tm3+ to Dy3+ and from Dy3+ to Eu3+ in co-doped fluorescent substance was determined by the aids of steady-state and transient-state photoluminescence spectra/ decay measurements. The energy transmission process from Tm3+ to Dy3+ and Dy3+ to Eu3+ has been explored to be a dipole-quadrupole interaction and a dipole-dipole interaction of the resonant type, respectively. More significantly, by tuning the molarity ratio of doping Dy3+/Eu3+ ions, multicolor emission from yellow to red shall be achieved in Sr3B2SiO8:Dy3+, Eu3+ phosphors for its potential adhibitions in solid-state lighting applications. The Sr3B2SiO8:Tm3+, Dy3+ samples can implement white light emission by the appropriate changeable doping molar quantity of Tm3+ and Dy3+, applying potentially in white LEDs. The energy migrations between co-doped rare earth ions play a decisive role in these processes.

Abstract:Eu2+ and Ce3+/Li+ singly doped and Eu2+/Ce3+/Li+-codoped Ca1.65Sr0.35SiO4 phosphors have been synthesized by a solidstate reaction method. The crystal structure was determined by Rietveld refinement to verify the formation of the alpha L-Ca2SiO4 phase with the Sr addition into Ca2SiO4, and the preferred crystallographic positions of the Eu2+ and Ce3+/Li+ ions in Ca1.65Sr0.35SiO4 were analyzed based on a comparison of the unit-cell volumes and the designed chemical compositions of undoped isostructural compounds Ca(2,)Sr SiO4 (x = 0.25, 0.35, 0.45, 0.55 and 0.65). Ce3+/Li+ singly activated Ca1.65Sr0.35SiO4 phosphors exhibit strong absorption in the range of 250-450 nm and a blue emission peak centered at about 465 nm. When Eu2+ ions are codoped, the emission colors of Ca1.65Sr0.35SiO4:Ce3+,Li+,Eu2+ phosphors under the irradiation of 365 nm can be finely tuned from blue to green through the energy transfer from Ce-3 to Eu-2. The involved energy-transfer process between Ce3+ and Eu2+ and the corresponding mechanism are discussed in detail. The reported Ca1.65Sr0.35SiO4:Ce3+,Li,Eu2+ phosphor might be a candidate for color-tunable blue-green components in the fabrication of near-ultraviolet-pumped white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs).
