Abstract:Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is expected to be one of the most promising materials for utilizing solar energy. One strategy comprises using Cu2O as a photocathode to obtain hydrogen by the reduction of water. However, the instability of Cu2O in solution hinders its employment to a great extent. Here, we fabricated a multilayer photocathode with the structure of Cu2O/Ga2O3/AZO/TiO2 by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The highest photocurrent density was increased to 6.5 mA cm(-2) in comparison to 4.5 mA cm- 2 for bare Cu2O at 0 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), and the stability was also improved to some extent. The properties of Ga2O3 were affected to a great extent by the oxygen pressure, which thereby changed the photovoltage and stability of the photocathode. Alignment of band energies is introduced to explain this phenomenon. In a sample containing Ga2O3 under a low oxygen pressure, the relatively lower Fermi level and conduction band edge in the Ga2O3 layer formed a region of electron accumulation near the interface, which impaired its performance. In addition, the interfacial chemical state of copper element was investigated by X- ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in combination with Ar ion etching. It was revealed that for both samples Cu+ was reduced to Cu-0 during the fabrication process near the Cu2O/Ga2O3 interface, which is harmful for stability. These factors resulted in the relatively unstable performance of the photocathode. This work reveals the performance of a multilayer photocathode grown by PLD and points out possible ways of improving it.

Abstract:Constructing novel surface microstructures for photocatalytic materials could significantly enhance the photocatalytic hydrogen production rate from water splitting. In this work, novel 2D/3D structured CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 p-n heterojunction photocatalysts for water splitting were successfully prepared by a solvothermal method. The coupling of a 2D CuCo2S4 nanoplate on the surface of 3D flower-like CdIn2S4 microspheres has strengthened the visible light absorption and promoted the charge separation efficiency due to their tight contacting area. The obtained CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 (CSCIS-2) photocatalyst exhibited a hydrogen production rate of 1320 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was fivefold of that for pure CdIn2S4. Additionally, cyclic tests demonstrated improved photoactivity stability of the samples. A series of photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed the effective suppression of charge carrier recombination in CuCo2S4/CdIn2S4 composite catalysts. Finally, a rational photocatalytic mechanism was proposed based on the semiconductor band theory. This work contributes to the enrichment of sulfide-based research and applications in photocatalysis.
Cu2O Photocathodes for Unassisted Solar Water-Splitting Devices Enabled by Noble-Metal Cocatalysts Simultaneously As Hydrogen Evolution Catalysts and Protection Layers

Abstract:Here, we report a Cu2O-based photocathode applied with pulsed-laser-deposited overlayers with the structure of Ga2O3/AZO/TiO2 and 60 nm dense Pt simultaneously as a hydrogen evolution catalyst and protective layer under backside illumination from ITO substrate. And by depositing thin Au nanoparticles on the bottom of Cu2O, we observe the increase of light harvesting and the production of hot electrons from the surface plasmon resonance effect. The modified photocathode presents a photocurrent density of -4 mA cm(-2) at 0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode and a thermodynamically-based energy conversion efficiency of 0.27% in a weak acidic electrolyte. The stability is tremendously improved compared with other structures without the dense Pt layer. This enhancement is attributed to the formation of a p-n junction at the Cu2O and Ga2O3 interface and surface stabilization by TiO2 and Pt. To demonstrate the impact on the practical application of the photocathode, we fabricate the bias-free solar water-splitting tandem device using a transparent BiVO4 photoanode, which exhibits a stabilized peak photocurrent density of 0.1 mA cm(-2) under continuous illumination.

Abstract:Recently, Cu2O has been considered as an attractive material for solar water splitting due to its excellent characteristics such as small bandgap, visible light adsorption, abundance, and nontoxicity. The theoretical solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency (STH) of Cu2O is 18% for water splitting. To date, the value experimentally obtained by previous works has not attained and overcomed above ideal value, because of the lack of Cu2O in photocathode to absorb sunlight efficiently, the short diffusion length of minority cariers, and the Cu2O photocorrosion during water splitting. 3D nanostructures for water splitting and surface modification contribute to resolving these issues. Nanostructures can improve STH owing to high surface-to-volume ratio and short diffusion length for carrier transport compared with bulk materials. In addition, surface modification enables to promote the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pair and to protect the photoelectrode against photocorrosion, and thus resulting in the enhancement of stability in Cu2O photocathode. The present study aimed to improve STH and stability in Cu2O photocathode for water splitting by optimizing morphology of Cu2O nanostructures and surface modification. In order to determine the suitable conditions for water splitting, the relationship between the morphology of the structure and STH was examined. The photocathode with Cu2O nanostructures exhibited maximum photocurrent density of 4.58 mA/cm2 at a potential of 0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and STH of 5.63%. Besides, surface modification was successfully introduced by covering nanostructures with homogeneous and conformal layers formed by atomic layer deposition (ALD).

Extended Light Harvesting with Dual Cu2O‐Based Photocathodes for High Efficiency Water Splitting

Abstract:Cu2O is one of the most promising light absorbing materials for solar energy conversion. Previous studies with Cu2O for water splitting usually deliver high photocurrent or high photovoltage, but not both. Here, a Cu2O/Ga2O3/TiO2/RuOx photocathode that benefits from a high quality thermally oxidized Cu2O layer and good band alignment of the Ga2O3 buffer layer is reported, yielding a photocurrent of 6 mA cm(-2) at 0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), an onset potential of 0.9 V versus RHE, and 3.5 mA cm(-2) at 0.5 V versus RHE. The quantum efficiency spectrum (incident photon to current efficiency, IPCE) reveals a dramatically improved green/red response and a decreased blue response compared with electrodeposited Cu2O films. Light intensity dependence and photocurrent transient studies enable the identification of the limitations in the performance. Due to the complementary IPCE curves of thermally oxidized and electrodeposited Cu2O photocathodes, a dual photocathode is fabricated to maximize the absorption over the entire range of above band gap radiation. Photocurrents of 7 mA cm(-2) at 0 V versus RHE are obtained in the dual photocathodes, with an onset potential of 0.9 V versus RHE and a thermodynamically based energy conversion efficiency of 1.9%.

Abstract:Cu2O has great potential as a photocathode for photoelectrochemical water splitting, and efficient charge separation through interface modulation is the key for potential application. In this work, we develop a facial strategy to maximally reduce the recombination of charge carriers via CuSCN in two directions, that is, E-CuSCN on an FTO substrate from ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) electrolyte as the hole-transport layer and D-CuSCN on the Cu2O layer from diethanolamine (DEA) electrolyte as the hole-storage layer. As a result, the E-CuSCN/Cu2O/D-CuSCN with efficient charge separation shows improved activity with a photocurrent density up to 5 mAcm(-2), which is 7 times higher than that of the pristine Cu2O. This work provides a new method for separating photocharges based on the design of interfacial crystal structure for high-efficiency photocathodes.

Abstract:The development of cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) photocathode for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting confronts charge recombination and photocorrosion. Herein, a facile strategy for wrapping Cu 2 O photocathode with Cu ions intercalated graphene oxide (Cu-GO) was proposed to realize efficient PEC water splitting. The intercalating GO with Cu ions could reduce the bandgap and enhance the carrier mobility of Cu-GO. The as-formed Cu-GO could suppress surface charge recombination and accumulation of the Cu-GO/Cu 2 O photocathode by improving the interfacial charge transfer, which strengthens electron extraction and restrains photocorrosion. The Cu-GO/Cu 2 O photocathode achieved a high photocurrent density of − 7.03 mA cm −2 (at 0 V vs. RHE) under AM 1.5 G illumination and excellent photostability for PEC water splitting. This work provides a simple way to design Cu 2 O-based photocathodes with reliable charge transfer layers for efficient PEC water splitting.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting based on abundant and promising Cu2O photocathode offers new possibilities for energy and climate crisis mitigation. Magnetron sputtering (MS) is a simple, reliable, and commercially proven scalable technique for fabricating Cu2O with excellent electronic properties. However, the small nanograin and cracking nature of the Cu2O nanofilm deposited by MS limited the subsequent heterojunction fabrication indispensable for capable devices. In this work, we have developed a simple surface densification strategy using another facile electrochemical deposition method to address this critical issue. The modified Cu2O-based photocathode presented a photocurrent density of 4 mA/cm2 at H2 evolution potential, which is 10 times higher than the unmodified device and 1.6 times that of the conventional device based on the electrochemical deposition method. Furthermore, we implemented comprehensive photoelectric characterization and energy band simulations to gain insight into the carrier dynamics in Cu2O, revealing the efficient separation of carriers in the modified specimen and the factor that limits the device performance. This paper provides a novel and simple approach to engineer efficient Cu2O photocathodes for PEC H2 generation based on the commercial MS technique.

Abstract:CuBi 2 O 4 is identified as a promising photocathode in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting systems. However, the PEC performance of CuBi 2 O 4 is far from expected due to the limited separation and transport efficiency of photogenerated carriers. To address the above issues, a cost-effective ternary Cu:NiO X /CuBi 2 O 4 /CuO composite photocathode was designed. Firstly, a thin Cu:NiO X film was inserted between CuBi 2 O 4 and FTO conducting substrate as a hole-selective layer, which promotes the transmission of photogenerated holes to the FTO substrate effectively. Furthermore, the modification of CuO film on the CuBi 2 O 4 electrode not only increases the absorption of sunlight and generates more photogenerated carriers, but also constitutes a heterojunction with CuBi 2 O 4 , creating a built-in electric field, which facilitates the separation of electrons and holes, and accelerates the electrons transfer to electrode–electrolyte interface. The fabricated Cu:NiO X /CuBi 2 O 4 /CuO composite photocathode exhibits a surprisingly high photocurrent density of − 1.51 mA·cm −2 at 0.4 V versus RHE, which is 2.6 times that of the pristine CuBi 2 O 4 photocathode. The improved PEC performance is attributed to the synergy effect of the Cu:NiO X hole-selective layer and the CuBi 2 O 4 /CuO heterojunction. Moreover, the combination with the BiVO 4 /CoS, an unbiased overall water splitting was achieved, which has a photocurrent of 0.193 mA·cm −2 .

Abstract:In this study, the CuBi2O4 films were prepared by a facile drop-casting method for visible-light-driven water splitting, while the effect of film thickness and annealing temperature on the actual photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance were investigated. The annealing temperature was optimized as 550 degrees C. With increasing the layer number, the PEC performance was firstly increased and then decreased, reaching a maximum photocurrent density of 1.1 mA/cm2 at a layer number of 3 under a bias of 0 V vs. reverse hydrogen electrode (RHE). Besides, both the electrochemical impedance and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were collected to reveal the mechanism underlying the performance changes. It was found that the enhanced PEC performance was attributed to high specific surface area and broad spectral response of CuBi2O4 photocathodes. Moreover, a tandem PEC cell was constructed by combining CuBi2O4 with a ZnIn2S4 photoanode for unbiased solar water splitting. The photocurrent density at the joint point was 0.13 mA/cm2, corresponding to an unbiased solar water splitting efficiency of 0.056%. This work shows that CuBi2O4 has a good potential as a photocathode for solar-driven overall water splitting.

Abstract:Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is a highly efficient p-type semiconductor, which has an appropriate band gap and favorable energy band positions, making it ideal to be considered as a photocathode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, the theoretical efficiency of Cu2O is still unachievable in practical situations due to the low separation rate of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. In this work, the surface of the Cu2O film was directly converted to CuO by thermal oxidation to form a Cu2O/CuO heterojunction with fewer defects at the interface. The PEC tests suggest that the Cu2O/CuO photocathode exhibits a photocurrent density of − 1.99 mA/cm2 at 0 V vs. RHE benefit by the heterojunction with a good interface for efficient charge separation and transfer, which is 3.3 times higher than Cu2O (− 0.6 mA/cm2). Furthermore, the performance of Cu2O/CuO can be greatly enhanced by depositing a Pt co-catalyst layer. The photocurrent density of Cu2O/CuO/Pt composites was 4.6 times higher than pristine Cu2O. More exciting, the stability of Cu2O with the CuO and Pt co-catalyst only presents a decline of 20% under illumination for 3600 s. This work points to the effective means of thermal oxidation that can form a heterojunction with relatively fewer interface defects and provides a strategy for the performance improvement of Cu2O photocathode in PEC water reduction.

Abstract:Abstract In the field of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) is one of the most promising photocathode materials, but its performance is restricted by poor carrier separation ability and low photovoltage. In order to overcome these limitations, a new kind of Cu 2 O‐ZnO blended heterojunction photocathode is designed and prepared by novel one‐step thermal oxidation method. ZnO granules are uniformly distributed in Cu 2 O film matrix, forming a granular structure, which enhances the band bending of Cu 2 O in the electrolyte and improves the photovoltage. In addition, the formed ladder type band alignment of Cu 2 O‐ZnO facilitates the spatial separation of photoexcited carriers. Different from the conventional layered heterojunction, the granular structured heterojunction proposed in this work extends the built‐in electric field region and further promotes the transmission of photoexcited carriers from the photoelectrode to the electrolyte. At 0 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), the photocurrent density of Cu 2 O‐ZnO film is as high as −8.7 mA cm −2 , which is over 6 times that of bare Cu 2 O (−1.3 mA cm −2 ). The onset potential positively shifts from 0.57 V vs RHE to 0.78 V vs RHE. This work provides an effective strategy for improving the PEC performance from the perspective of band alignment and material structure.

Abstract:Recently, cuprous oxide (Cu2O) based photocathodes have gained research attention for hydrogen (H2) production through photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting reactions due to marginally lower synthesis cost and low energy intensity fabrication processes. Unique properties of Cu2O, such as tunable bandgap, appropriate band edge potentials with water redox levels and non-toxic nature makes it beneficial for PEC applications. Cuprite is mainly studied under visible light to facilitate enhanced H2 gas production upon illumination. However, notoriously photocorrosion degrades the PEC performance and restricts the photoactivity of Cu2O. Moreover, because of the redox potentials lies within the band gap of Cu2O; self-photocorrosion or self-oxidation upon illumination is unavoidable. Improvement in the Cu2O photocathodes was achieved by finding elegant solutions such as forming thin heterojunction layers by atomic layer deposition (ALD) as well other methods, co-catalyst deposition, tuning crystal facets and surface modifications with different synthetic methods. In this review, we discuss the improvements in Cu2O photocathodes achieved over the years for enhanced H2 production with recently studied photocathodes.

Abstract:Cu2O has emerged as a promising material for sustainable hydrogen production through photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, while inefficient charge separation remains one of the main challenges hindering its development. In this work, we demonstrate a new architecture of InAlN/Cu2O heterojunction photocathode by combining n‐type InAlN and p‐type Cu2O to improve the charge separation efficiency, thus enhancing PEC water splitting performance. The Pt/InAlN/Cu2O photoelectrode exhibits a photocurrent density of 2.54 mA/cm2 at 0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (VRHE), which is 3.21 times higher than that of Cu2O (0.79 mA/cm2 at VRHE). The enhanced PEC performance is explained by the larger built‐in potential Vbi of 1.43 V formed at the InAlN/Cu2O p‐n junction than that in the single Cu2O photocathode (Vbi < 0.77 V), which improves the separation of the photogenerated carriers and thus relieves the bottlenecks of charge transfer kinetics at the electrode bulk and electrode/electrolyte interface. Abstract:Expanding the optical response range and improving the photogenerated carrier separation rate are critical to increasing the efficiency of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this paper, a ZnO/Cu2O/Co-Pi heterojunction was successfully fabricated for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. As a narrow band semiconductor, Cu2O can extend the absorption range of solar spectra. Co-Pi plays the role of a hole-trapping cocatalyst to accelerate the water oxidation reaction at the electrode and electrolyte interfaces. This complex ZnO/Cu2O/Co-Pi photoanode moves the origin potential in a negative direction, and displays an improved photocurrent density of 1.58 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is 1.08 times that of a ZnO/Cu2O heterojunction and 2.03 times that of pure ZnO. The efficient PEC performances of the ZnO/Cu2O/Co-Pi photoanode are caused by the broader light absorption and higher photogenerated carrier separation rate. This study proved that the simultaneous reaction of the heterojunction and cocatalyst has great prospects for application in efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting photoelectrode systems.

Boosting Carrier Separation and Transport in CuGaO2 Photocathodes by Coupled Effects of Surface Polarization and Facet-Junction

Abstract:This study investigates the synergistic enhancement of carrier separation and transport in CuGaO2 photocathodes, achieved through the coupled effects of surface polarization and facet -junction engineering. Delafossite CuGaO2 microspheres, which exhibit a flower-like micro -nano hierarchical structure, are synthesized facilely through a one -pot hydrothermal process. These microspheres self -assemble from CuGaO2 nanosheets, driven by electrostatic forces among crystal facets. Morphology and size are systematically modulated by pH values, solvent composition, and reaction temperature. The CuGaO2 nanosheets, serving as fundamental building blocks, manifest notable surface polarization effects that facilitate the efficient transport of photo -generated carriers. The facet -junction formed between intersecting CuGaO2 nanosheets facilitates the collection of photo -generated electrons and holes on both sides of the interface, leading to spatial separation. Consequently, the CuGaO2 microspheres synergistically combine nanoscale surface polarization and microscale facet -junction effects, promoting the effective separation and rapid transport of electron -hole pairs generated under visible -light irradiation. The resulting simple bare photocathode, constructed using CuGaO2 microspheres, demonstrates a photocurrent density of 32 mu A/cm2 at zero -bias, with a peak incident photon -to -current efficiency of 12.72 % at a 450 nm wavelength. Further optimization of the CuGaO2 photocathode yields a better photocurrent density of 138 mu A/cm2 at 0.33 VRHE. These results underscore the significance of integrating nanoscale surface polarization effects with microscale facet -junction effects to achieve efficient separation and rapid transport of photogenerated carriers in photoelectrochemical cells.

Abstract:As one of the most efficient photocathodes, Cu2O has attracted substantial attention because of its theoretically high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency. However, its applications in photoelectrochemical (PEC) fields are severely restricted by the poor stability derived from serious photocorrosion. In this work, high-quality phenylethynyl copper (Ph-C(sic)C-Cu) are successfully self-assembled on the surface of Cu2O photocathode by a novel photothermal method to improve its photostability. With the protection of the Ph-C(sic)C-Cu layer, 85% of the initial photocurrent density can be remained, while only 28% of initial photocurrent density is left on bare Cu2O photocathode prepared on a copper foam (CF) substrate. The significantly improved photostability of Cu2O photocathode by the Ph-C(sic)C-Cu protective layer is attributed to its strong hydrophobicity, which can efficiently inhibit the corrosion of Cu2O by the aqueous electrolyte solution due to its special crystal structure. Based on the obtained Ph-C(sic)C-Cu/Cu2O photocathode, a two-photoelectrode cell with excellent stability (>5 h) has also been successfully constructed for water splitting without the need of an electric bias.

Abstract:The flexible self‐supported Cu0.5Co0.5‐ZFC‐150 photo‐electrochemical catalyst exhibits enhanced performance for overall water splitting and photoreduction of CO2, which may be due to its optimized phase interfaces, abundant active sites, optional oxygen vacancy, and adjusted Gibbs free energy. Herein, the obtained Cu0.5Co0.5‐ZIF@Fe2O3@CC‐150 heterojunction (termed as Cu1‐xCox‐ZFC‐150) showed high hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) activities with low overpotential small Tafel slope. When employed to be the bifunctional anode and cathode, they only needed a cell voltage of 1.62 V. The composite also exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance on CO2 evolution into CO and CH4. The enhanced OER kinetics and Z‐scheme charge transfer model for photocatalytic property have been discussed based on the experiments and density functional theory (DFT) analysis. The optimized phase interfaces, abundant active sites, optional oxygen vacancy, and adjusted Gibbs free energy were beneficial for the fast electron/ion transport enhancing the water splitting performance.
