Abstract:Luminescence property of low-concentration Eu2+-doped SrAlSi4N7:Ce3+ yellow phosphor is reported in this paper. Three optical centers Ce1, Ce2, and Eu2 are observed in the phosphor. Deconvolution of emission spectrum confirms the three centers to be green (530 nm), yellow (580 nm), and red (630 nm), respectively. This property promises considerable improvement of color-rendering property of a white light-emitting diode (wLED). For example, color-rendering index (CRI) of wLED fabricated by combining a blue LED chip and SrAlSi4N7:0.05Ce3+,0.01Eu2+ phosphor reaches 88. A competitive energy transfer process between Ce1-Ce2 and Ce1-Eu2 is confirmed based on Inokuti-Hirayama formula. Ratio of energy transfer rate between Ce1-Ce2 and Ce1-Eu2 (WCe1-Eu2/WCe1-Ce2) is calculated to be 2.0. This result reveals the effect of Eu2+ concentration on quantity of green and red components in SrAlSi4N7:Ce3+,Eu2+ phosphor.
Spectral Properties of Alkaline Earth Composite Silicate Phosphors for White-LED

Abstract:Three series silicate phosphors(A:(SrBa)3SiO5∶0.024Ce3+,0.024Li+;B:Sr2.73M0.2SiO5∶0.07Eu2+(M= Ba,Mg,Ca);C:(SrBa)3SiO5∶xEu2+)were synthesized by solid reaction method.Their excitation and emission spectra were measured.There are two exitation peaks(351 nm and 418 nm,418 nm is stronger) for Ce3+ -activated(Series A) silicate phosphors.With increasing the content of Ba ion,their emission peaks change to longer wavelength.Consequently,we can change its color then at the end adjust the CIE chromaticity and color rendering index of white-LED.Eu2+ -activated(Series B and C) silicate phosphors have broad excitation bands from 350 nm to 450 nm.The emission peaks of Ce3+ -activated silicate phosphors are 540～555 nm and shorter than Eu2+ -activated silicate phosphors,while the emission peaks of Eu2+ -activated silicate phosphors are at 570～583 nm.For the series B(Sr2.73M0.2SiO5∶0.07Eu2+(M= Ba,Mg,Ca)),it's better when M=Ba.At the series C((SrBa)3SiO5∶xEu2+),their emission peaks and FWHM change with no obvious rule.The emission peaks of Ba-doped Sr3SiO5∶Ce3+,Li+ and Sr3SiO5∶Eu2+ shifted to longer wavelength.Both of them can be used for packaging white-LED with NUV,UV and blue LED chip.

Abstract:A series of SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) (0.005 ≤x≤ 0.05) phosphors were successfully synthesized through a pressureless, facile, and efficient solid state route. The crystal structure, band structure, and their photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. The phosphors exhibit rod shape morphology with a uniform Eu(2+) distribution. Under n-UV excitation the emission spectra shift from 477 to 497 nm with an increase of Eu(2+) concentration. The concentration quenching mechanism of Eu(2+) emission was dominated by the dipole-dipole interaction. The thermal stability is comparable to that of the commercial Ba2SiO4:Eu(2+) phosphor. The phosphor also exhibits high current saturation and high resistance under low voltage electron bombardment. All the results indicate that the SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) phosphors can be considered as candidates for application in both white LEDs and FEDs.

Abstract:Sr3SiO5: Ce3+, Li+ phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction. By co-doping Ba2+ into them, the emission band of the phosphors showed a red shifts with a broad emission band peaking at 590nm. The InGaN-based 0.35Ba2+ co-doped Sr3SiO5: 0.018Ce3+, 0.018Li+ LED presented white emitting and color rendering index of 88.

Abstract:Ce3+ doped CaAlSiN3 is a promising broadband orange phosphor that can be applied in white light-emitting diodes (wLEDs) solid state lighting for general illumination. However, its emission color and quantum efficiency are not good enough to achieve high color rendering properties and luminous efficacy of wLEDs. In this work, we proposed to realize the spectral tuning and property enhancement of CaAlSiN3:Ce3+ by bandgap engineering via the cationic substitution of Ca by Sr. The relationship between photoluminescence and local coordination structure as well as electronic structure were revealed. The substitution led to a blue-shift in emission maximum by 13 nm (from 595 to 582 nm) and a highest external quantum efficiency of 55% (enhanced by 10%). This broadband yellow phosphor enabled to produce wLEDs with a color rendering index of 83.3, luminous efficacy of 114.6 l m/W and a color temperature of 4604 K.

Abstract:The Sr3Al2O5Cl2:Ce3+,Eu2+ phosphors were prepared by solid state reaction. The obtained phosphors exhibit a strong absorption in the UV-visible region and have two intense emission bands at 444 and 609 nm. The energy transfer from the Ce3+ to Eu2+ ions was observed, and the critical distance has been estimated to be about 24.5 A by spectral overlap method. Furthermore, the developed phosphors can generate lights from yellow-to-white region under the excitation of UV radiation by appropriately tuning the activator content, indicating that they have potential applications as an UV-convertible phosphor for white light emitting diodes.

Abstract:In this paper, facile synthesis of CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ yellow-emitting phosphors under atmospheric pressure at a moderate temperature and their photoluminescent properties are reported. The prepared CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ phosphors exhibit a broad yellow emission band positioned at 580 nm and covering a bandwidth of 150 nm. The thermal stability of CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ phosphors shows obvious superiority than the commercial YAG: Ce3+ phosphor, indicating its promising application prospect in power LEDs. In addition, the enhancement of red-light component for CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ phosphor is demonstrated by co-doping Eu2+ ions. This study offers a facile route to prepare CaAlSiN3: Ce3+ yellow-emitting phosphors, which may be used as a promising candidate for high performance white LEDs.

Abstract:A yellowish‐green emitting phosphor Ba3YAl2O7.5:Eu2+ was synthesized by a solid‐state method. The crystal structure, luminescence, concentration quenching, fluorescence decay, and thermal quenching properties were systematically investigated. Under blue light (440 nm) excitation, Ba3YAl2O7.5:Eu2+ phosphors exhibit a yellowish‐green emission peaking at 550 nm with a full width at half maximum ∼ 69 nm, and The Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of Ba3YAl2O7.5:Eu2+ are (0.4064, 0.5811). Structural analysis and Van Uitert equation along with fluorescence lifetime analysis reveal that Eu2+ ions occupy 6‐coordinated Y and 9‐coordinated Ba sites in Ba3YAl2O7.5, and therefore generate two emission sub‐bands at 582 and 548 nm. In addition, Ba3YAl2O7.5:Eu2+ phosphor remaining 43% photoluminescence emission intensity at 125°C with an activation energy of 0.372 eV. Utilizing the title phosphor (Ba3YAl2O7.5:3%Eu2+), commercial red (Ca,Sr)AlSiN3:Eu2+ (CSAlSi:Eu2+) phosphor, and InGaN‐based blue light emitting diode (LED) chip, a proof‐of‐concept warm white LEDs (WLEDs) with a color rendering index of 80.1, CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.411, 0.381), luminous efficacy of ∼ 22.13 lm/W, and correlated color temperature of ∼ 3288 K is achieved. Thus, Eu2+ activated Ba3YAl2O7.5 phosphors have the potential application in WLEDs pumped by a blue LED chip for solid‐state lighting application.

Abstract:Yellow-orange oxynitride Ca-α-SiAlON: Eu2+ phosphors with the compositions of Ca0.8Si9.2Al2.8O1.2N14.8: xEu2+ (x=0–0.24) were obtained via carbothermal reduction and nitridation method. Crystallographic parameters of the refinement structure with triclinic space group P31c (159) were obtained by XRD refinement as a=b=7.8859(3)Å, c=5.7336(2)Å, V=308.7915(3)Å3, Z=1. The resulting phosphors can absorb light in the range of 300–500nm efficiently and show a single intense broad emission band in the wavelength range of 500–700nm with maximum intensity at 580–601nm. The chromaticity coordinates of the synthesized Ca-α-SiAlON: Eu2+ phosphors can be tailored by simply controlling the activator concentration. All the results show that Ca-α-SiAlON: Eu2+ phosphors can be a candidate for warm white LEDs.

Abstract:A series of SryCa1−x−yAlSiN3:xEu2+ (x = 0–0.01, y = 0–0.8) phosphors have been successfully prepared by solid state reaction under atmospheric pressure. All the phosphors exhibit orthorhombic crystal structure similar with CaAlSiN3 structure. It is found that the emission bands for all Ca1−xAlSiN3:xEu2+ phosphors are centered at ~650 nm and fluorescence quenching has been observed along with the increase of Eu2+ concentration in host materials. Through substitution of Ca2+ by Sr2+, an expected red emission peak (625 nm) and enhanced luminescent intensity can be achieved. The obtained Sr0.8Ca0.192AlSiN3:0.008Eu2+ phosphor was further used as efficient red component to fabricate white light emitting diodes (LEDs). Under the optimized condition of LED packaging, the white LEDs own the excellent optical properties with luminous efficiency of 90.6 lm/W and an ideal color rendering index (Ra = 82). Furthermore, the color correlated temperature of white LEDs can be simply adjusted through changing the red phosphor concentration and dispensing package saves time.

Abstract:A propylene oxide (PO)-driven fast sol-gel route followed with a post high temperature calcination were utilized to synthesize CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ cationic solid solution phosphors with micro-spherical morphologies and improved internal quantum efficiencies. The polyethylene oxide (PEO) was also employed to induce the phase separation of CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ precursors to get monodispersed spherical morphologies in the sol-gel system. Benefit from uniform copolymerization of each chemical components and pyrolysis of organic matter, Ca, Sr, Al and O were homogenously distributed in the produced CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ cage like microspheres. It helps to efficiently trap incident light and to improve the PL efficiencies. By changing the ratio of Ca/Sr, infinite solid solution polycrystalline phosphors, CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ microspheres with x = 0~1, can be obtained and their PL emission can be gradually tuned from green to white to blue. Micro-spherical SrAl2O4: Eu2+, CaxSr1-xAl2O4: Eu2+ and CaAl2O4: Eu2+ phosphors exhibited internal quantum efficiencies as high as 71.1, 35.3~45.9 and 75.3%, respectively.

Abstract:Y3Al5O12:0.06Ce(3+), xMn(2+) (YAG:0.06Ce, xMn) phosphors have been synthesized and the effect of different charge compensators on the color adjustment has been investigated for the first time. The luminescence properties of Mn2+ singly doped and co-doped with Ce3+ into YAG host have been discussed. It is observed that in singly doped sample, Mn2+ ions not only occupy two kinds of Al3+ sites to generate a yellow and a deep red emission bands, but also occupy Y3+ sites to obtain a green emission band in YAG host. Considering Mn2+ substitution for Al3+, quadrivalence ions including Zr4+, Ge4+ and Si4+ ions are introduced to balance the charge difference. The results show that Si4+ as charge compensator exhibits the best tunable effect on controlling the Mn2+ emissions in YAG:0.06Ce, xMn. In Si4+-Mn2+ co-doped samples, the emission color can be tuned from greenish-yellow to red with increasing the content of Mn2+. Abstract:Ce(3+) and Eu(2+) activated Li(2)SrSiO(4) phosphors were prepared using a high temperature solid-state reaction technique. The VUV-UV-vis photoluminescence (PL) of Ce(3+)-doped phosphors Li(2-x)Sr(1-x)Ce(x)SiO(4) and Eu(2+)-doped phosphors Li(2)Sr(1-x)Eu(x)SiO(4), the low-voltage cathodoluminescence (CL) of Eu(2+)-doped phosphor Li(2)Sr(0.991-x)Eu(0.009)SiO(4) and Ce(3+)-Eu(2+) co-doped phosphors Li(2-x)Sr(0.991-x)Eu(0.009)Ce(x)SiO(4) were measured and discussed in consideration of their potential application in field emission displays (FEDs). The intense emission of phosphors Li(2-x)Sr(0.991-x)Eu(0.009)Ce(x)SiO(4) is tunable in yellow to white color gamut under low-voltage cathode ray excitation.

Abstract:It is still a challenge to develop orange-red phosphors with high performance, good thermal stability and high color purity. We successfully designed and synthesized aseries of novel orange-red phosphors Sr3-2 x Al2Si3O12:xEu3+,xLi+ (0.04 ≤ x ≤ 0.18), which can be effectively excited by ultraviolet and bluelight. The fluorescence emission spectra of phosphors Sr3-2 x Al2Si3O12:xEu3+,xLi+ are composed of several peaks at 500–750 nm, which belong to the electronic transition of 5D0→7FJ (J = 0,1,2,3,4) of Eu3+. Phosphor Sr2.8Al2Si3O12:0.1Eu3+,0.1Li+ has excellent thermal stability, when the temperature is as high as 418 K, the fluorescence emission intensity remains 77.81%, and the activation energy Ea = 0.2665 eV. The color coordinates of phosphors Sr3-2 x Al2Si3O12:xEu3+,xLi+ are all located in the orange-red region (0.58,0.40), and the color purity is as high as 97.52%. These results show that phosphor Sr2.8Al2Si3O12:0.1Eu3+,0.1Li+ is a potential orange-red phosphor which can be effectively excited by ultraviolet light and blue light to obtain white light.

Abstract:The luminescence of Li2SrSiO4: 0.01Eu, xCe (x=0.0025, 0.005, 0.0075, and 0.01) is studied as a potential ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) phosphor that is capable of converting the ultraviolet emission of a UV-LED into white light with good luminosity. There are broad blue and yellow emissions peaked at 413 and 575nm, respectively. The two emissions come from d–f transitions of Ce3+ and Eu2+, respectively. The emission intensity of Li2SrSiO4: 0.01Eu, xCe reaches its maximum at x=0.0075. The energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu2+ is demonstrated to be the type of electric dipole–dipole interaction with considerable spectral overlap and nonradiative transition is calculated to dominate. The Commission International de I’Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates of Ce3+/Eu2+ substituted compounds is also discussed.
Color Tunable Composite Phosphor Ceramics Based on SrAlSiN3:Eu2+/Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ for High-Power and High-Color-Rendering-Index White LEDs/LDs Lighting

Abstract:Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor ceramics were fabricated by vacuum sintering. On this basis, a bi-layer composite phosphor was prepared by low-temperature sintering to cover the phosphor ceramics with a layer of SrAlSiN3:Eu2+-phosphor-in-glass (PiG). The optical, thermal, and colorimetric properties of LuAG:Ce3+ phosphor ceramics, SrAlSiN3:Eu2+ phosphors and SrAlSiN3:Eu2+-PiG were studied individually. Combining the bi-layer composite phosphors with the blue LED chip, it is found that the spectrum can be adjusted by varying the doping concentration of SrAlSiN3:Eu2+-PiG and the thickness of Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ phosphor ceramics. The maximal color rendering index value of the white LED is 86, and the R9 is 61. Under the excitation of a laser diode, the maximum phosphor conversion efficacy of the bi-layer composite phosphors is 120 lm/W, the Ra is 83, and the correlated color temperature is 4534 K. These results show that the bi-layer composite phosphor ceramic is a candidate material to achieve high color rendering index for high brightness lighting.

A single Eu2+-activated high-color-rendering oxychloride white-light phosphor for white-light-emitting diodes

Abstract:Single-phased, high-color-rendering index (CRI) white-light phosphors are emerging as potential phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) and as an alternative to blends of tricolor phosphors. However, it is a challenge to create a high CRI white light from a single-doped activator. Here, we present a high CRI (Ra = 91) white-light phosphor, Sr5(PO4)3-x(BO3)xCl:Eu2+, composed of Sr5(PO4)3Cl as the beginning member and Sr5(BO3)3Cl as the end member. This work utilized the solid-solution method, and tunable Eu2+ emission was achieved. Color-tunable Eu2+ emissions in response to structural variation were observed in Sr5(PO4)3-x(BO3)xCl solid solutions. This was further confirmed using X-ray Rietveld refinement, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and in the photoluminescence spectra. The color-tunable emissions included the white light that originated from the combination of the blue emission of Sr5(PO4)3Cl:Eu2+ and an induced Eu2+ yellow emission at approximately 550 nm in the solid solution. Importantly, the white-light phosphors showed a greater R9 = 90.2 under excitation at 365 nm. This result has rarely been reported in the literature and is greater than that of (R9 = 14.3) commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+-based WLEDs. These findings demonstrate the great potential of Sr5(PO4)3-x(BO3)xCl:0.04Eu2+ as a white-light phosphor for near-UV phosphor-converted WLEDs. These results also provide a shortcut for developing a high CRI white-light phosphor from a single Eu2+-doped compound.
Structure and Luminescence Properties of Sr-rich Phase (ca,sr)alsin3:Eu2+ Orange Phosphors

Abstract:A series of Sr-rich phase nitride phosphors, Eu 2+ doped Ca 1-x Sr x AlSiN 3 , were synthesized by the solid state method under atmospheric pressure condition. It was found that Sr can substitute Ca in the CaAlSiN 3 lattice with the maximum solubility when x≤0.95. Under the excitation of 450 nm, the photoluminescence spectra of Ca 1-x Sr x AlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ phosphors presents a blue-shift from 594 nm to 574 nm with increasing x value. The results indicate that Ca 1-x Sr x AlSiN 3 :Eu 0.001 phosphor can be a promising orange phosphor which could replace silicate orange phosphor for white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:In this research, Ce3+ and Tb3+ doped alkaline-earth silicate Sr2MgSi2O7 phosphors have been synthesized by solid-state reaction. The results show that the Sr2−xMgSi2O7:xCe3+ phosphors exhibit a violet–blue emission with excitation at 348 nm, whereas the Sr2−yMgSi2O7:yTb3+ phosphor show a green emission with excitation at 243 nm. In addition, the structure of Sr2MgSi2O7 host has been analyzed by Crystalmaker program. Staggered arrangements of [SiO4] and [MgO4] units in the Sr2MgSi2O7 system underlie possible chemical tuning and phase segregation, providing a potential candidate of tunable luminescence. A red shift of wave length is clarified by crystal field theory and Van Uitert expression. The FESEM image of Sr1.99MgSi2O7:0.01Ce3+ phosphors reveal that it has a proper particle size for application in WLEDs. With different Tb3+ doping concentration, the CIE chromaticity coordinates Sr2MgSi2O7:Tb3+ phosphors still remain a steady position. These results indicate that Sr2−xMgSi2O7:xCe3+, Sr2−yMgSi2O7:yTb3+ phosphors are promising phosphors for WLEDs.
A Cerium Doped Scandate Broad Orange-Red Emission Phosphor and its Energy Transfer-Dependent Concentration and Thermal Quenching Character

Abstract:A series of BaSr2Sc4O9 and Ce3+-doped BaSr2Sc4O9 phosphors were synthesized via the high temperature solid state reaction. Crystal structure information on BaSr2Sc4O9 is first refined using the Rietveld method based on the XRD data, and it is assigned to the trigonal system with the R3 space-group. The photoluminescence properties were investigated in detail, including the emission and excitation spectra, site occupation, decay lifetime, thermal quenching, and quantum efficiency. There are three Ba2+/Sr2+ sites and four Sc3+ sites in this structure. The Ce3+ ions in the 6-fold coordinated Sr2+/Ba2+ sites show a near-ultraviolet-blue emission with a peak at around 407 nm under ultraviolet excitation. The Ce3+ ions in Sc3+ sites exhibit a bright broad orange-red emission with the peak at around 615 nm under near-ultraviolet and blue excitation. The energy transfer process between the different sites is demonstrated based on the spectral analysis, theoretical calculation, and decay lifetime variation. Under excitation of 345 nm, the energy transfer phenomenon and distribution of activator ions lead to the invalidation of part of the Ce3+ ions, and then it causes a higher concentration quenching point. The participation of the energy transfer in the thermal quenching phenomenon causes the abnormal intensity variation, which is ascribed to the energy compensation by the increasing energy transfer efficiency at high temperature. The internal quantum efficiency is 45% under the 420 nm excitation wavelength. An excellent white light emitting diode lamp is obtained by fabricating BaSr2Sc4O9:Ce3+ with BAM:Eu2+, β-sialon:Eu2+, and a 395 nm GaN chip; its CIE coordinate ( x, y), CCT, and Ra are (0.3708, 3463), 4023 K, and 84. These results reveal the correlation between energy transfer and luminescent property and provide a practical foundation to comprehend and adjust the photoluminescence performance.
